  • Radiant barrier systems(RES) constructed with low emissivity materials bounded by an open air space can be used to reduce the net radiation transfer between two surfaces. To analyze the heat transfer characteristics of the radiant barrier systems which consist of a single-glass and radiation barriers, a simple theoretical model based on energy balances was suggested. And the model was validated by means of the experimental results. Using a guarded hot box, the temperatures of layers in selected RES and energy use for each cases were measured. The results show that the model well explained the heat transfer characteristics of those RES. Also, the heat transfer coefficient correlations considering natural and forced convection heat transfer ware suggested. It is found that the heat transfer efficiency of a RBS with aluminium surface improved up to 66.6% over that of a single glazing system.

  • A numerical study was made of heat transfer in locally-forced turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a backward-facing step. The local forcing was given to the flow by means of sinusoidally oscillating jet from a separation line. A Rhee and Sung version of the unsteady $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$-f(sub)u model and the diffusivity tensor heat transfer model were employed. The Reynolds number was fixed at Re(sub)H=33,000 and the forcing frequency was varied in the range 0$\leq$fH/U(sub)$\infty$$\leq$2. The condition of constant heat flux was imposed at the bottom wall. The predicted results were compared and validated with the experimental data of Chun and Sung and Vogel and Eaton. The enhancement of heat transfer in turbulent separated and reattaching flow by local forcing was evaluated and analyzed.

  • As a mass flow controller is widely used in many manufacturing processes for controlling a mass flow rate of gas with accuracy of 1%, several investigators have tried to describe the heat transfer phenomena in a sensor tube of an MFC. They suggested a few analytic solutions and numerical models based on simple assumptions, which are physically unrealistic. In the present work, the heat transfer phenomena in the sensor tube of the MFC are studied by using both experimental and numerical methods. The numerical model is introduced to estimate the temperature profile in the sensor tube as well as in the gas stream. In the numerical model, the conjugate heat transfer problem comprising the tube wall and the gas stream is analyzed to fully understand the heat transfer interaction between the sensor tube and the fluid stream using a single domain approach. This numerical model is further verified by experimental investigation. In order to describe the transport of heat energy in both the flow region and the sensor tube, the Nusselt number at the interface between the tube wall and the gas stream as well as heatlines is presented from the numerical solution.

  • This study has analyzed the convective heat transfer on the deck exposed to the high-temperature impingement exhausting from a VTOL vehicle. The heat flow of the impingement on the deck is modeled by the convection heat transfer. The convective heat flux generated by the hot impinging jet is investigated by using both convective heat transfer formulation and conjugate heat transfer formulation. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) code was used to compute the heat flux distribution. The RANS equation and the k-e turbulence model were used to analyze the thermal flow of the impinging jet. The heat flux distribution near the stagnation zone obtained by the conjugate heat transfer analysis shows more reasonable than the convective heat transfer analysis.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of an internal heat exchanger for $CO_2$ refrigeration cycle are numerically investigated. The numerical model is verified using the published experimental results for the concentric tube type internal heat exchanger. The Hardy-Cross Method gives very good agreement between the calculation and experimental results on the heat transfer rates and exit temperatures. Also, appropriate combination of heat transfer correlations is found. The operating parameters of the heat exchanger are calculated at transcritical region of $CO_2.$ The heat transfer rate of the counter flow type heat exchanger shows the $32\%$ greater than that of the parallel flow type heat exchanger. The increase of heat exchanger length enhances the heat transfer rate. The thermodynamic characteristics and heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in the internal heat exchanger are estimated.

  • The characteristics of unsteady heat transfer and boundary layer flow in the SSME turbine rotor passage are investigated with LRN $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The unsteady flow and heat transfer in a rotor blade passage as a result of wake/blade interaction is modeled by the inviscid/boundary-layer flow approach. The relevant governing equations are discretized to a system of finite different equations by means of a BTBCS implicit method. These equations have been solved numerically, for the velocity and temperature fields using TDMA method. Heat flux on the blade surface and flow parameters in the rotor passage are calculated with wake interaction. Numerical results show that velocity, pressure, turbulent kinetic energy and heat flux on the blade surface are varied periodically by wake passing.

  • In recent years, air-conditioning units designed with higher efficiency and more compactness are required due to emphasis on energy efficiency in home electrical appliances. This trend in the air-conditioning industries has accelerated the development of improved heat exchanger with a better performance in heat transfer aspects. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the shape and configuration of fins affecting on the performance of the conventional fin-and-tube type heat exchanger equipped in a commercial air conditioners. The geometry similtude method was employed to measure the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. Experimental results show that this method is very useful to analyze the heat transfer characteristics of the fin-and-tube type heat exchanger. It is also found that the slit fin has better performance than the conventional fin type in the air conditioners. The present results indicate that heat transfer from the fin si influenced by the parameters such as the forming area of the slit fin, the type of interrupted surfaces like a louver or slit, slit patterns and slit raised direction, and it also affects the overall heat exchanger performance.

  • Numerical analyses have been carried out to analyze the three-dimensional turbulent heat transfer by impingement jet on a concave surface with variation of geometric configurations. Three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-stokes equations have been calculated using the shear stress transport turbulent model. The numerical results for heat transfer rate were validated in comparison with the experimental data. The distance between jet nozzles and angle of inclined jet nozzle were selected as the geometric variables. Area-averaged Nusselt numbers on concave surface are evaluated to find the characteristics of heat transfer with the two geometric variables. The heat transfer increases as the distance between jet nozzles increases, and the inclined impinging jets show much better heat transfer performance than the vertical impinging jet.

  • As a method to develop an enhanced heat transfer fluid, the fine particles of a phase-change material were mixed with a conventional heat transfer fluid. Paraffin, which can be obtained easily in domestic market, was used for the phase-change material and water was used as a carrier fluid. Fine liquid particles of paraffin were formed in water as an emulsion by using an emulsifier, and they were cooled rapidly to become solid particle, resulting in paraffin slurry. The average diameter of produced solid particles was inversely proportional to the amount of the added emulsifier, which was theoretically proved. The produced paraffin slurry was tested thermally in heat transfer test section having a constant-heat-flux boundary condition. The test section was made of a circular stainless-steel pipe, which was directly heated by the power supply having a maximum of 50 Volts-500 Amperes. DSC(Differential scanning calorimeter) tests showed that two kinds of phase change were involved in the melting of paraffin, and it was explained in two different ways. A five- region-melting model was developed by extending the conventional three-region-melting model, and was used to obtain the local bulk mean temperatures of paraffin slurry in the heating test section. The local heat transfer coefficient showed a maximum where the bulk mean temperature of the paraffin slurry reached at the melting temperature of paraffin.

  • Nuclear thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes have been developed to comprehensively model nuclear reactor systems to evaluate the safety of a nuclear reactor system. For analyzing complex systems with finite computational resources, system codes usually solve simplified fluid equations for coarsely discretized control volumes with one-dimensional assumptions and replace source terms in the governing equations with constitutive relations. Wall boiling heat transfer models are regarded as essential models in nuclear safety evaluation among many constitutive relations. The wall boiling heat transfer models of two widely used nuclear system codes, RELAP5 and TRACE, are analyzed in this study. It is first described how wall heat transfer models are composed in the two codes. By utilizing the same method described in Part 1 paper, heat fluxes from the two codes are compared under the same thermal-hydraulic conditions. The significant factors for the differences are identified as well as at which conditions the non-negligible difference occurs. Steady-state simulations with both codes are also conducted to confirm how the difference in wall heat transfer models impacts the simulation results.
