Because of increasing concerns regarding global warming and the longevity of oil and gas reserves, the importance of nuclear energy as a major source of sustainable energy is gaining recognition worldwide. To make nuclear energy truly sustainable, it is necessary to ensure not only the sustainability of the fuel supply but also the sustained availability of waste repositories, especially those for high-level radioactive waste (HLW). From this perspective, the effort to maximize the waste loading density in a given repository is important for easing repository capacity problems. In most cases, the loading of a repository is controlled by the decay heat of the emplaced waste. In this paper, a comparison of the decay heat characteristics of HLW is made among the various fuel cycle options. It is suggested that, for a future fast breeder reactor (FBR) cycle, the removal and burning of minor actinides (MA) would significantly reduce the heat load in waste and would allow for a reduction of repository size by half.
In recent years, increasing concerns of environmental issues of global warming and limitations of conventional energy resources have resulted in extensive researches into energy harvesting from unused energy. Thermoelectric generation (TEG) is a promising technology for waste heat to power, and various kinds of applications are possible if a waste heat source meets the requirements of TEG operation. In terms of commercialization, economic feasibility is important for an emerging technology like TEG. In this study, economic analysis was conducted for the application of TEG on various sources of waste heat.

The use of nuclear reactors is a large studied possible solution for thermochemical water splitting cycles. Nevertheless, there are several problems that have to be solved. One of them is to increase the efficiency of the cycles. Hence, in this paper, a thermal energy optimization of a Sulfur-Iodine nuclear hydrogen production cycle was performed by means a heuristic method with the aim of minimizing the energy targets of the heat exchanger network at different minimum temperature differences. With this method, four different heat exchanger networks are proposed. A reduction of the energy requirements for cooling ranges between 58.9-59.8% and 52.6-53.3% heating, compared to the reference design with no heat exchanger network. With this reduction, the thermal efficiency of the cycle increased in about 10% in average compared to the reference efficiency. This improves the use of thermal energy of the cycle.
Recently, the heat exchangers are requiring higher performance and reliability since they are being used under the operating condition of high temperature and pressure. To satisfy these requirements, we need special materials and bonding technology. This study presents a manufacturing technology for high temperature and high pressure micro channel heat exchanger using Inconel 617. The bonding performance for diffusion bonded heat exchanger was examined and analyzed. The analysis were conducted by measuring thermal and mechanical properties such as thermal diffusivity and tensile strength, and parametric studies about bonding temperature and pressing force were also carried out. The results provided insight for bonding evaluation and the bonding condition of $1200^{\circ}C$, and 50 tons was found to be suitable for this heat exchanger. From the results, we were able to establish the base technology for the manufacturing of Inconel 617 heat exchanger through the application of the diffusion bonding.
This study was undertaken to evaluate the allowable welding heat input range for high strength steels manufactured by various processes and to compare the weldability of TMCP steel for high heat input welding with that of conventional Ti-added normalized steel. The allowable welding heat input ranges for conventional 50kg/$mm^2$ steel to guarantee D or E grade of ship structural steel were below 150 and 80kJ/cm respectively. Such a limit in welding heat input was closely related with the formation of undesirable microstructures, such as grain boundary ferrite and ferrite side plate in the coarse grain HAZ. In case of 60 and 80kg/$mm^2$ quenched and tempered steels, for securing toughness in weldments over toughness requirements for base metal, each welding heat input had to be restricted below 60 and 40kJ/cm, that was mainly due to coarsened polygonal ferrite in weld metal and lower temperature transformation products in coarse grain HAZ. The TMCP steel could be appropriate as a grade E ship hull steel up to 200kJ/cm, but the Ti-added normalized steel could be applied only below 130kJ/cm under the same rule. This difference was partly owing to whether uniform and fine intragranular ferrite microstructure was well developed in HAZ or not.
The Korean fenestration energy consumption efficiency rating system only considers thermal performance of the heat transfer coefficient (U-value) and airtightness excluding optical characteristics of the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). This study analyzed annual heating and cooling energy requirements on the middle floor of apartment by optical and thermal performance of windows to evaluate the suitability of the rating system. One hundred and twenty-eight windows were analyzed using THERM and WINDOW 7.4, and energy simulation for a reference model of an apartment house facing south was performed using TRNSYS 17. The results showed that window performance was the main factor in the heating and cooling load. The heating load of the reference model was 539 kWh to 2,022 kW, and the cooling load was 376 kWh to 1,443 kWh. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of the heating and cooling loads driven from the SHGC were 0.7437 and 0.9869, which are more compatible than those from the U-value, 0.0558 and 0.4781. Therefore, it is not reasonable to evaluate the energy performance of windows using only the U-value, and the Korean fenestration energy consumption efficiency rating system requires a new evaluation standard, including SHGC.
The Free-Piston Stirling engine (FPSE) is of interest for many research in aerospace due to its advantages of long operating life, higher efficiency, and zero maintenance. In this study, a 1-kW FPSE was proposed by analyzing the requirements of Space Reactor Power Systems (SRPS), of which performance was evaluated by developing a code through the Simple Analysis Method. The results of SAM showed that the critical parameters of FPSE could satisfy the designed requirements. The heater of the FPSE was designed with the copper rectangular fins to enhance heat transfer, and the parametric study of the heater was performed with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software STAR-CCM+. The Performance Evaluation Criteria (PEC) was used to evaluate the heat transfer enhancement of the fins in the heater. The numerical results of the CFD program showed that pressure drop and Nusselt number ratio had a linear growth with the height of fins, and PEC number decreased as the height of fins increased, and the optimum height of the fin was set as 4 mm according to the minimum heat exchange surface area. This paper can provide theoretical supports for the design and numerical analysis of an FPSE for SRPSs.
A detailed literature review is presented for the applications of the heat pump technologies on the electric vehicles Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. Due to legal regulations, automotive manufacturers have to produce more efficient and low carbon emission vehicles. Electric vehicles can be provided these requirements but the battery technologies and energy managements systems are still developing considering battery life and vehicle range. On the other hand, energy consumption for HVAC units has an important role on the energy management of these vehicles. Moreover, the energy requirement of HVAC processes for different environmental conditions are significantly affect the total energy consumption of these vehicles. For the heating process, the coolant of internal combustion (IC) engine can be utilized but in electric vehicles, we have not got any adequate waste heat source for this process. The heat pump technology is one of the alternative choices for the industry due to having high coefficient of performance (COP), but these systems have some disadvantages which can be improved with the other technologies. In this study, a literature review is performed considering alternative refrigerants, performance characteristics of different heat pump systems for electric vehicles and thermal management systems of electric vehicles.
In order to realize a three-dimensional shape on CAD, the machining process has been widely used because it offers practical advantages such as precision and versatility. However, the traditional machining process needs a large amount of time in cutting a product and the remained material causes trouble such as inconvenience due to cleaning process. This paper introduces a new rapid manufacturing process called Rapid Heat Ablation process (RHA) using the rotary hot tool to overcome limitations of traditional machining process. The rotary hot tool to satisfy requirements of RHA process is designed and produced. In order to examine relationships between kerfwidth and process parameters such as heat input, speed of tool and speed of revolution, experiments were carried out. In addition, relationship between the kerfwidth and the effective heat input was obtained. Based on the experimental results, double-curved shape was ablated to show the validity of proposed process. In the procedure, the rough cut and fine cut were performed according to the conditions of process parameters without tool change process. The practicality and effectiveness of the proposed process have been verified through ablation of three-dimensional shape.
The purpose of this study is to develop a Half Nozzle Repair(HNR) process to prevent the leakage from welds on small bore piping in Reactor Coolant System. The Codes & Standards of tempered bead and design requirements of J-Groove welds are reviewed. Automatic machine GTAW welding and machining equipments are developed to perform HNR process. Single pass welding and overlay welding equipments are conducted in order to obtain the optimal temper bead welding process parameters with Alloy 52M filler wire. Coarse grain heat affected zone(CGHAZ) is formed by rapid cooling rate in heat affected zone after welding. Accordingly, a proper temper bead technique is required to reduce CGHAZ in 1-Layer of welds by 2- and 3-Layers. Mock-up tests show that the developed HNR process is possible to meet ASME Code & Standard requirements without any defect.
