  • The memory of the Korean War is about the time period when people lived toughly during evacuation, due to being exposed to the natural climate such as intense cold or heat without any protection, leaving their comfortable home and living in temporary built shelters which were barely enough to avoid the wind. 'Death is concealed and only the figures of evacuation for survival were expressed, just as how the government ordered. Since the experience of the battlefield is personal and fragmentary, that is broken into pieces, it does not have compatibility. As war is a distorted experience that cannot be placed in a big picture, it is not possible to take a view of the war's big picture. Having this individualized experience as a common collective memory is an issue and it is the will that people tries to pursue. The reason why the evacuees from north to south, and as well as from the south to further south were all able to be adopted as the theme of artworks due to the military action that emptied the occupied territories of the North Korean Army under the forced removal command. In such situations, the natural state of the 'snow' was like a symbol of the 1.4 Recession. The group of people who were thrown into the intense cold displaced the war damage of loosing their base livelihood, and symbolized the obedient citizens who faithfully follow their government's command. The figure of advocating anti-communism is projected as a figure of a refugee during cold winter-time and it contains ones past which he or she obeyed its own country's commands. Evacuation, especially the evacuation during the winter is a visual device that can confirm these kinds of country's command. The consequences were same for the artists as well. Therefore, the situation being communal could be found due to the individual experiences during war are ideological. The image of the refuge shown in the picture played the role of strengthening the consciousness of defecting to South Korea into the meaning of the 'Finding Freedom.' I would like to express that the reason of them leave their home during the harsh winter is in order to avoid the oppression of the Communist Party. The evacuation that people went through was not to 'Finding Freedom', but 'To Survive'. Later, this evacuation has been imprinted as a behavior of choosing free Republic of Korea, which was an ideological issue. Anti-communism was the rule of survival in South Korea society, and people have the tendency to remember what they want to remember. As it is not the people who possesses an incident, but the memory that possesses ones, people cover their memory with disguised plots in order to forget the violence and to live a different prologue. They share the incident of violence as a hurtful memory. The tragedy of the Korean War was the result of Ideology and being in between the powerful nations' rights, but the violence during the war has been depicted as a natural disaster, which was the evacuation in heavy snow.

  • To determine the compatibilities of soft liming materials with denture cleansers by measuring the flexibility and elasticity and investigating the surface changes, 4 self-curing acrylic resin soft lining materials and 1 heat-curing silicone soft lining material were evaluated. 3mm thick x 20mm diameter discs of soft lining materials were individually bonded to a hard acrylic resin base as per manufacturers’instructions. Using an Instron universal testing machine, a static stress of $2kg/cm^2$ was applied for 30secs., the strain in compression was measured, giving an indication of the material’s flexibility. Elastic recovery was measured at 10secs. After removal of stress. Surface changes were investigated with Stereomicroscope. Then the specimens were immersed in 4alkaline peroxide denture cleansers and water as control group, tests were carried out at 1 day, 2 days, 7 days, 14 days and 30 days. The results were as follows : 1. Alkaline peroxide denture cleansers caused considerable porosity on the surface of selfcuring acrylic resin soft lining materials, and the most affected by the cleansers were Viscogel, Coe-Soft, Coe-Comfort, Lynal, in that order. 2. There was significant difference in flexibility between each soft lining material except for Coe-Comfort and Visco-gel, and every soft lining material was significant difference in elasticity. Especially Molloplast-B and Lynal were less flexible and more elastic than other soft lining materials(p<0.05). 3. The denture cleansers increased the flexibility and elasticity of the soft lining materials compared with control group(p<0.05), and Denalan, Polident, Kleenite, Efferdent affected the soft lining materials in that order. 4. There was significant difference in flexibility between each denture cleanser except for Denalan and Polident(p<0.05). Though Denalan and Polident, Denalan and Kleenite did not show significant difference in elasticity, other denture cleansers showed significant difference among each other(p<0.05). 5. Clinically Coe-Comfort, Coe-Soft and Visco-gel were incompatible with alkaline peroxide denture cleansers, and Lynal would be used within only 2 weeks. But Molloplast-B was compatible with alkaline peroxide denture cleansers.

  • This study was performed to identify the microorganisms from air conditioners and to investigate hygiene management on air conditioners. Eight species of bacteria were isolated and identified from twenty samples of coolers in air conditioners; Pantoea sp., Bacillus circulans, Bacillus pumilus, Corynebacterium, Flavimonas oryzihabitans, Ochrobacterum anthropi, Micrococcus sp., and non fermented bacilli (NFB). One thousand and three hundreds twenty-two persons who used air conditioners in their houses were investigated about the state of hygiene management in their air conditioners. One thousand and one hundred thirty eight persons (86%) of the total investigated persons ventilated their air conditioners and 1,128 persons (85%) of them cleaned their air conditioners. However, 864 persons (66%) of them did not clean filters and 1,089 persons (82%) did not clean the heat exchangers, both of which air conditioners could be easily contaminated by microorganisms. From these results, we could conclude that the contaminants, bacteria as mentioned the above, in air conditioners could cause human disease such as respiratory infections if the number of bacteria increase in air conditioners. Thus, the removal of contaminants and the improved hygiene of the air conditioners can prevent human diseases caused by the released bacteria during the use of air conditioners.

  • Murine encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) has been used as a surrogate for hepatitis A virus (HAV) for the validation of virus removal and/or inactivation during the manufacturing process of biopharmaceuticals. Recently international regulation for the validation of HAV safety has been reinforced because of the reported cases of HAV transmission to hemophiliac patients who had received ntihemophilic factors prepared from human plasma. The purpose of the present study was to compare the resistance of HAV and EMCV to various viral inactivation processes and then to standardize the HAV validation method. HAV was more resistant than EMCV to pasteurization (60oC heat treatment for 10 hr), low pH incubation (pH 3.9 at 25oC for 14 days), 0.1 M NaOH treatment, and lyophilization. EMCV was completely inactivated to undetectable levels within 2 hr of pasteurization, however, HAV was completely inactivated to undetectable levels after 5 hr treatment. EMCV was completely inactivated to undetectable levels within 15 min of 0.1 M NaOH treatment, however, residual infectivity of HAV still remained even after 120 min of treatment. The log reduction factors achieved during low pH incubation were 1.63 for HAV and 3.84 for EMCV. Also the log reduction factors achieved during a lyophilization process of antihemophilic factor VIII were 1.21 for HAV and 4.57 for EMCV. These results indicate that HAV rather than EMCV should be used for the virus validation study and the validation results obtained using EMCV should be precisely reviewed.

  • Engineering phase of dairy housing systems has close connection with the milk produc- tivity of dairy cattle, the quality of milk, extension of dairy production systems, labor- saving in management of dairy cattle and the like. Moreover, the rate of investment of dairy housing facilities is of relatively high level, However, there has been almost no research effort for the improvement of engineering aspects of dairy housing systems in Korea. The purpose of this study is to find out general engineering problems and to recomm- end the improvement in dairy housing systems in Korea. Field survey by means of questionaire, direct measurements, taking pictures and sketching was conducted to get necessary information for the study. Kyung-ki Do region was firstly chosen for sampling area since it has included more than half of the number of dairy farms of the whole country. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In overall dairy farm layout, the dwellings of workers were ignored in the light of sanitary environment 2. The layout of stalls in a dairy barn belongs mostly to the type of double-row face-out, which is compatible with the emphasis of manure disposal activities. 3. While the width and length of stalls were sufficiently close to the standard dimension, the width of mangers was much less than the standard dimension. 4. The width and depth of manure gutters and the width of working alleys were much. less than the standard dimension. 5. The mooring equipment was mostly in the classes of chain or rope. The watering equipment was not facilitated independantly except the one cese of using watercup. 6. The bucket milkers with one or two bucket milkers with the capacity of two cattles. each were used as milking equipment in most dairy farms. 7. There were only few milk rooms independently spaced from other space, in which the arrangement of milking equipment was much less than the standard condition. 8. The lounging ground area was averaged to be sufficient for the activity of dairy herd. 9. Silos for silage used during winter consisted of mostly bunker silos, trench silos and underground vertical silos. Ordinary vertical silos were considered for the farmers to be inconvenient for the labor saving. 10. From the view point of heat conservation and moisture removal within the dairy barns, windows were not flexible for the easy ventilation and ceiling part was not adequate for temperatur maintenance. 11. Waste treatment and disposal systems were not provided with most dairy farms, therefore the livestock waste pollution problems would be serious in the near future.

  • The proposed $CO_2$ storage technology in the present study is a one-step sequestration process that stabilizes $CO_2$ in a reactor with Serpentine. The advantage of this technology is associated with its high stability of final product so that the entire system is recognized as permanent environment-friendly $CO_2$ removal method. Since the sequestration reaction mechanisms are generally understood that carbonation reaction proceeds with very slow rate, so that pretreatment method to increases reaction rate of $CO_2$ carbonation reaction should be developed. To increase the reactivity of Serpentine with $CO_2$, two different methods of pretreatment are carried out in the present investigation. One is heat-treatment, the other is chemical pretreatment. In this study, only chemical pretreatment is considered leaching method of magnesium from Serpentine using sulfuric acid at the various reaction temperatures, times, and acid concentrations. Experimental results illustrated that pretreatment by sulfuric acid increases surface area of serpentine from $11.1209m^2/g$ to $98.7903m^2/g$ and extracts magnesium compounds. Single variable experiment demonstrated the enhancements of magnesium extraction with increased reaction temperature and time. Amount of magnesium extraction is obtained by using the data of ICP-AES as maximum extraction condition of magnesium is 2 M acid solution, $75^{\circ}C$ and 1hr. After performing chemical pretreatment, carbonation yield increased from 23.24% to 46.30% of weight.

  • Chlorinated aromatic compounds are one of the largest groups of environmental pollutants as a result of world-wide distribution by using them as herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, solvents, hydraulic and heat transfer fluids, plasticizers, and intermediates for chemical synthesis. Because of their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation, the compounds contaminated ubiquitously in the biosphere has attracted public concerns in terms of serious influences to wild lives and a human being, such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and disturbance in endocrine systems. The biological recalcitrance of the compounds is caused by the number, type, and position of the chlorine substituents as well as by their aromatic structures. In general, the carbon-halogen bonds increase the recalcitrance by increasing electronegativity of the substituent, so that the dechlorination of the compounds is focused as an important mechanism for biodegradation of chlorinated aromatics, along with the cleavage of aromatic rings. The removal of the chlorine substituents has been known as a key step for degradation of chlorinated aromatic compounds under aerobic condition. This can occur as an initial step via oxygenolytic, reductive, and hydrolytic mechanisms. The studies on the biochemistry and genetics about microbial dechlorination give us the potential informations for microbial degradation of xenobiotics contaminated in natural microcosms. Such investigations might provide biotechnological approaches to solve the environmental contamination, such as designing effective bioremediation systems using genetically engineered microorganisms.

  • In this study, two kinds of activated carbon fibers were prepared from PAN-based stabilized fibers by physical activation with steam. The variations in specific surface area, amount of iodine adsorption and pore size distribution of the activated carbon fibers after the activation process were discussed. The activated carbon fibers were prepared by two different methods, namely a 1- and 2-step method. For the 2-step method, carbonization of fibers in $N_2$ atmosphere was carried out to make carbon fibers and then activated by steam. In normal two step steam activation, BET surface area of about $1019m^2/g$ was obtained in the study. In the 1-step steam activation process, the carbonization and activation were simultaneously carried out. In the one step steam activation, BET surface area of $1635m^2/g$ was obtained after heat-treatment at $990^{\circ}C$. However, nitrogen adsorption isotherms for oxidized PAN based activated carbon fibers that were prepared by both methods were type I in the Brunauer-Deming-Deming-Teller (BDDT) classification even though they have different BET surface areas, amounts of iodine adsorption and pore size distributions.

  • Objectives : Fagopyrum esculentum(FE) has been used for removal of inflammation of internal organs and treatment of sore and ulcer by heat toxin in Korean herbal medicines. In this study, To investigated the protective effect of FE on allergic response, we determined whether FE inhibits allergic response. Methods : The effect of FE was analyzed by ELISA, RT-PCR and Western blot in RBL-2H3 cells. We investigated cell viability, ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase, as a marker of degranulation, cytokne, and intracellular ROS and MAPK and NF-${\kappa}B$ signaling. Results : We found that FE suppressed ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase release, the production of IL-4 and TNF-${\alpha}$ and intracellular ROS level in RBL-2H3 by the anti-DNP IgE plus DNP-HSA stimulation. FE also significantly inhibited cytokine mRNA expressions, such as IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-2, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-13, TNF-${\alpha}$ and GM-CSF in RBL-2H3. In addition, PF suppressed the phospholyation of ERK1/2, JNK1/2, p38 and $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ and NF-${\kappa}B$ signal transduction pathway. Conclusions : Our results indicate that FE protects against allergic response and exerts an anti-inflammatory effect through the inhibition of degranulation and production of cytokines and ROS via the suppression MAPK and NF-${\kappa}B$ of signal transduction. Abbrevations : FE, Fagopyrum esculentum; RBL-2H3, rat basophilic leukemia cell line; ROS, reactive oxygen species; MAPK, Mitogen-activated protein kinase; $NF{\kappa}B$, nuclear factor ${\kappa}B$; $TNF{\alpha}$, Tumor necrosis factor alpha; GM-CSF, Granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor; ERK, extracellular-signal-regulated kinase; JNK, c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase; p38, p38 MAP kinase; $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$, inhibitory-kappa B alpha.

  • Submarine gas fields have focused because of the increasing fuel cost, the environmental regulations, and the safety & NIMBY problems. LNG-FPSO which is available for acid gas removal, recovery of the condensate & LPG and Liquefaction in topside process is one of high technology offshore structures. On the other hands, it is necessary to verify the pre-treatment efficiency by the ship motion and to apply to the design for LNG-FPSO. This study is to develop the pre-treatment technology for LNG-FPSO as taking account to the process efficiency by ship motion effects and the area optimization. Based on the simulation results, it founds that hybrid process shows the low circulate rate, the low heat duty and the small size of column dimensions compared to typical amine process. It will be verified the process efficiency in the various conditions by sea states as performing the 6-DOF motion test and CFD simulation.
