  • The hydration of $C_3A$ and $C_3A-CaSO_4$.$2H_2O$ was investigated with varying concentration (0.1-1.0%) of sodium gluconate solution. gluconate solution. Sodium gluconate accelerates cation dissolution from $C_3A$ for the first several minutes but depresses the rate of heat evolution in the course of $C_3A$ hydration. The hydration of $C_3A$ in the presence of sodium gluconate was modified such that the formation of the intermediate hydrate C4AH$\chi$ crystal was much reduced and most of the product became amorphous. The retardation of $C_3A-CaSO_4$.$2H_2O$ hydration in the presence of sodium gluconate was controlled by the competitive adsorption between gluconate anion and $SO_4^{-2}$ onto $C_3A$ surface.

  • In the course of cement hydration it was found that the addition of polyvinyl alcohol(contracted as PVA. here after) only in the cement paste could more influence on the set-retardation the depression of heat evol-ution rate than that of montmorillonit only or PVA-montmorillonie intercalation complex (PMIC) due to the effective adsorption of PVA on cement particles. The improved mechanical strength by addition of montmorillonite and PMIC was observed remarkably up to 0.05wt% due to the decrease of macro-pores caused by lowed viscosity or the acceleration of hydration reaction.

  • A new bacteriocin, named lacticin 10790, was purified from Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris KFCC 10790 by sequential adsorption, immobilized metal-affinity, cation-exchange, and $C_{18}$ reverse-phase chromatographies. The molecular mass of the bacteriocin was estimated to be between 3,000 and 3,500 Da. Lacticin 10790 showed a broad antimicrobial spectrum against many gram-positive bacteria. The bacteriocin was stable to heat and in the pH range between 2 and 6. Lacticin 10790 was destroyed by digestion with proteases and exhibited a bactericidal mode of action. An amino acid composition analysis of purified lacticin 10790 revealed a high concentration of hydrophobic amino acids. The N terminus of the bacteriocin was found to be blocked, upon analysis by Edman degradation. The results suggest that lacticin 10790 is a class I bacteriocin.

  • Activated carbons (ACs) are widely used in adsorption for the removal of gaseous and aqueous pollutants[1,2]. The microbicidal property of ACs is also very important, in order to decrease the risk of water and air contamination with microorganisms. For this purpose, ACs have impregnated with silver or with metallic oxides[2]. However, in the case of Ag supported ACs prepared by impregnation, there are some problem, such as, heat-treatment, highly decrease in specific surface area and pore volume by deposited Ag, and rapidly elution of Ag at the initial stage of usage[3]. • The cone calorimeter as defined by ISO 5660, ASTM 1354, and NFPA 264A is used to assess the reaction to fire of almost any material that must be evaluated in the fire science field. Typical combustion gas analyses include oxygen, CO and CO2. Oxygen consumption is used to determine rate of heat release. Analysis of combustion gases other than oxygen, CO and CO2 has been attempted using filters to remove the solid smoke particles before analysis. This method has generated unreliable results due to the adsorption of many gas components on the active carbon . particles deposited on the filters. A technique using fourier Transform Infrared (FTIB) analysis without filtration will be disclosed and a discussion will be presented of the analytical results of toxic gases produced from various flame retarded polymeric materials. Use of such data in lethal toxic potency determinations is also reviewed.

  • In recent years, it has been urgently required to develop and study a product that adsorbs and reduces lardon gas due to the risk of lardon gas in Korea. Therefore, this study develops a board for adsorbing lardon gas into the inside and outside of the room. The thermal conductivity was measured in order to carry out an adiabatic test for satisfying the following conditions. Experimental level and factors were substituted with silica gel. In addition, silica gel was used by dry mixing and prewetting, and 10, 20, and 30% of cement was substituted for each. As a result of the test, the thermal conductivity decreased to 0.45 W/mK with increasing the amount of replacement, and reached a similar level when compared with diatomite.

  • Mesoporous $TiO_2$ microspheres were prepared by spray pyrolysis for photocatalysis. Post modification of $TiO_2$ by heat treatment was performed to optimize its photocatalytic performance. First, spherical $TiO_2$ particles with mesoporous structure were synthesized at pyrolysis temperatures of 500, 600, and $700^{\circ}C$. After characterization by XRD, SEM, and $N_2$ adsorption, a sample prepared at $500^{\circ}C$ was found to possess desirable properties for photocatalytic performance through post-modification. In methylene blue degradation, mesoporous $TiO_2$ microspheres synthesized at $500^{\circ}C$ outperformed other microspheres. Furthermore, samples obtained by spray pyrolysis at $500^{\circ}C$ were calcined at various temperatures as a post-modification process. The sample calcined at $350^{\circ}C$ showed improved photocatalytic activity due to optimal anatase crystallinity and surface area.

  • Both $Al_2O_3$ and AlN nanopowders with diameters from ${\mu}m$ to mm were bead-milled and surface-modified by stabilizing agent. The size of bead-milled nanoparticles compared with the primary powder was effectively decreased and was dependent on milling time and bead size. The results of dispersion stability analysis indicated that chemical bonding between nanoparticles and surfactant is more effective than chemical adsorption to prepare the stable transformer oils containing nanoparticles. In this study, the thermal conductivity of the transformer oils containing nanoparticles was measured by transient hot-wire and laser flash methods.

  • Microporous glasses were prepared from the 50 $SiO_2-44$ $B_2O_3-6$ $Na_2O$(wt%) parent glass by the phase eparation technique and were characterized by SEM, BET, and Gas Adsorption methods to investigate the possiblity of their use as salt-rejection membranes for reverse osmosis. The conditions of the phase separation for the possible glass membranes were optimized for the given parent glass. The temperature and duration of heat-treatment were desired to be lower(853K) and shorter (1/2~1 hr) respectively. The specific surface areas of porous glasses prepared in this study were about 80~120$m^2$/g and their pore size distribution had a unimodal shape(peak pore radius less than 15$\AA$) It was suggested that the porous glass obtained in this work could be effective for salt-rejection in point of pore size distributions but the way to increase its surface area for the high flux must be studied.
