Extinction characteristics of hydrogen-air diffusion flames at various pressures are investigated numerically by adopting counterflow flame configuration as a model flamelet. Especially, effect of radiative heat loss on flame extinction is emphasized. Only gas-phase radiation is considered here and it is assumed that $H_2O$ is the only radiating species. Radiation term depends on flame thickness, temperature, $H_2O$ concentration, and pressure. From the calculated flame structures at various pressures, flame thickness decreases with pressure, but its gradient decreases at high pressure. Flame temperature and mole fraction of $H_2O$ increase slightly with pressure. Accordingly, as pressure increases, radiative heat loss becomes dominant. When radiative heat loss is considered, radiation-induced extinction is observed at low strain rate in addition to transport-induced extinction. As pressure increases, flammable region, where flame is sustained, shifts to the high-temperature region and then, shrunk to the point on the coordinate plane of flame temperature and strain rate. The present numerical results show that radiative heat loss can reduce the operating range of a combustor significantly.
Numerical study is conducted to predict effects of radiative heat loss and fuel composition in synthetic gas diffusion flame diluted with $CO_2$. The existing reaction models in synthetic gas flames diluted with $CO_2$ are evaluated. Numerical simulations with and without gas radiation, based on an optical thin model, are also performed to concrete impacts on effects of radiative heat loss in flame characteristics. Importantly contributing reaction steps to heat release rate are compared for synthetic gas flames with and without $CO_2$ dilution. It is also addressed that the composition of synthetic gas mixtures and their radiative heat losses through the addition of $CO_2$ modify the reaction pathways of oxidation diluted with $CO_2$.
This study was performed to evaluate the burning characteristics of wood-based materials and the effect of surface treatment of fire retardant using cone calorimeter. Four types of wood-based materials, such as Plywood, Oriented Strand Board (OSB), Particle Board (PB) and Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), were tested at a constant heat flux of $50kW/m^2$ to investigate the time to ignition, mass loss rate, heat release rate, effective heat of combustion, etc. In addition, each type of wood-based material was tested at the same heat flux after fire retardant treatment on the surface to evaluate the effect of this treatment on the burning characteristics. The surface treatment of fire retardant, by the amount of $110g/m^2$, delayed the time to ignition almost twice. However, it was indicated that heat release rate, mass loss rate, and effective heat of combustion were not significantly affected by fire retardants treatment for all types of wood-based materials.
Both 1-D and 2-D analytic methods are used for a rectangular fin optimization. Optimum heat loss is taken as 98% of the maximum heat loss. Temperature profile using 2-D analytic method and relative error of temperature along the fin length between 1-D and 2-D analytic methods are presented. Increasing rate of the optimum heat loss with the variation of Biot number and decreasing rate of that with the variation of the fin base length are listed. Optimum fin tip length using 2-D analytic method and relative error of that between 1-D and 2-D analytic methods are presented as a function of Biot numbers ratio.
Laminar lifted propane coflow-jet flames diluted with nitrogen were experimentally investigated to determine heat-loss-related self-excitation regimes in the flame stability map and elucidate the individual flame characteristics. There exists a critical lift-off height over which flame-stabilizing effect becomes minor, thereby causing a normal heat-loss-induced self-excitation with O(0.01 Hz). Air-coflowing can suppress the normal heat-loss-induced self-excitation through increase of a Peclet number; meanwhile it can enhance the normal heat-lossinduced self-excitation through reducing fuel concentration gradient and thereby decreasing the reaction rate of trailing diffusion flame. Below the critical lift-off height. the effect of flame stabilization is superior, leading to a coflow-modulated heat-loss-induced self-excitation with O(0.001 Hz). Over the critical lift-off height, the effect of reducing fuel concentration gradient is pronounced, so that the normal heat-loss-induced self-excitation is restored. A newly found prompt self-excitation, observed prior to a heat-loss-induced flame blowout, is discussed. Heat-loss-related self-excitations, obtained laminar lifted propane coflow-jet flames diluted with nitrogen, were characterized by the functional dependency of Strouhal number on related parameters. The critical lift-off height was also reasonably characterized by Peclet number and fuel mole fraction.

A modified asymmetric rectangular fin is analysed using the two-dimensional separation of variables method. This modified rectangular fin is made by attaching the wing on the top side of a rectangular fin. Heat loss from each side of this modified rectangular fin is calculated. The relative increasing ratio of heat loss between a modified rectangular fin and a rectangular fin is presented as a function of dimensionless fin volume, wing height and the location of the wing. Especially, to show the remarkable effect of the wing on the heat loss, the relative increasing ratios of heat loss between two different volume increasing methods are listed.
A cylindrical constant volume combustion bomb is used to investigate the combustion characteristics and to analyze the heat quantity of homogeneous charge methane-air mixture under various initial pressures, excess air ratios and ignition times. As the overall pressure increase, the values of maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release have been increased. But it is not very meaningful to compare with some values such as maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release for different overall pressure due to the different heat energy of supplied fuel. So the each value is needed to be compared with normalized value, which is divided by the entered fuel energy. To analyze the heat quantity, some definitions including the CHR ratio, the UHC ratio and the HL ratio are needed and are calculated. As the overall pressure increase, the CHR ratios and the UHC ratios have been decreased, while the HL ratios have been increased. The CHR ratio of 300 ms has the higher value than that of 10000ms, and the HL ratios of 300 ms have a lower value.
