  • This study deals with performance characteristics of heat pipe combined with a solid-liquid phase change material(PCM). The outer diameter of the heat pipe was 9.5 mm and the total length was 600 mm, where the evaporator, the adiabatic section and the condenser lengths were equally 200 mm. A paraffin wax having a melting point of 58.5$^{\circ}C$ was used as PCM. The paraffin container was attached to the adiabatic section of the heat pipe. The paraffin container had outer diameter of 18 mm, wall thickness of 1.2 mm and the total length of 100 mm. The heat pipe was tested with tilt angle of horizontal degree and favorite angle 10 degree, with evaporator lower position to provide stable operation of the heat pipe. Input thermal load was varied from 40 W, with increment of 40 W, to above 100 W until the maximum temperature of the heat pipe wall reached 200$^{\circ}C$. Test results of the PCM heat pipe were presented in comparison with conventional heat pipe of the same basic dimensions. The performance was analyzed in terms of temperature distribution, thermal resistance and heat transport capability.

  • In this study, the transient temperature distribution of welded zone was analyzed by Finite Element Method for the optimal design of weldment. This study was carried out for the steel plate 8mm thick, 100mm wide, 100mm long that butt weld. The weld was made with a heat input of 2,250 joule/cm(arc current : 180 amperes ; arc voltage :25 volts ; and arc travel steed : 0.28 cm/sec). In the analysis of temperature, cooling in the welded zone by the conduction between materal was almost completed at 600 sec when a unique temperature field was formed. after this, the material was gradually cooled by the heat transfer to the circumference. In the early phase the temperature in base metal zone is little changed. but after the rise in temperature the whole area is cooled gradually.

  • The discharge properties of super high-pressure mercury lamp are due to resistance heating for energy input, and results in temperature increase. The cooling equilibrium state is reached by the heat conduction, convection and radiation. In order to predict the fluid flow and heat transfer in and around the mercury lamp accurately, its visualization is of utmost importance. Such visualization is carried out by CFD program in this study. We focus on Anode shape to calculate four cases, namely AA, AB, AC and AD separately, and compare the temperature distribution and velocity vector in each case to predict cooling capacity and fluid flow properties. It can be concluded that the shape of anode plays an important role that affects the fluid flow and heat transfer in a mercury lamp.

  • We propose a heat jet approach for a two-dimensional square lattice with nearest neighbouring harmonic interaction. First, we design a two-way matching boundary condition that linearly relates the displacement and velocity at atoms near the boundary, and a suitable input in terms of given incoming wave modes. Then a phonon representation for finite temperature lattice motion is adopted. The proposed approach is simple and compact. Numerical tests validate the effectiveness of the boundary condition in reflection suppression for outgoing waves. It maintains target temperature for the lattice, with expected kinetic energy distribution and heat flux. Moreover, its linear nature facilitates reliable finite temperature atomic simulations with a correct description for non-thermal motions.

  • A heat transfer model for a pulse combustion water heater is developed, and an associated computer simulation is conducted to determine the temperature distribution as well as heat transfer rate. Parametric studies are performed to examine the effects of the operating and design variables on the thermal performance and heat transfer rate. They are found to be influenced mainly by energy input rate, the amount of excess air, the volume of combustion chamber, and the diameter of flue tube.

  • A welding structures is generally composed of dissimilar steel materials in order to reduce weight cost, and has a gap to fill the welding agent. Also, heat flow analysis should be fulfilled for structure existing of gap to figure out residual stress which is generated after welding. Since mechanical properties of welding structure composed of dissimilar steel is more fragile than mechanical properties of welding structure consisted of same material, heat flow analysis verifying this should be fulfilled as well. Therefore, on this research, heat flow analysis about dissimilar steel weldment consisted of gap existing AISI304 and AISI630 is practiced so that it could be a basic data of research about mechanical properties of gap existing dissimilar steel welding part which is going to be studied later on. During heat flow analysis, heat input model which based on Gaussian profile and using volume heat flux was newly consisted and applied. In addition, for verifying of analysis on this research, gap existing dissimilar steel weldment which had gap of 0.25mm and was welded using Nd-YAG. The welding profile and temperature distribution for weldment during welding was compared to the result which was gotten through heat flow analysis. Both of those results corresponded each other.

  • Thermoforming is one of the most versatile and economical processes available for shaping polymer products, but obtaining a uniform thickness of the final product using this method is difficult. Heater power adjustment is very important because the thickness distribution depends strongly on the distribution of the sheet temperature. In this paper, the steady-state optimum distribution of heater power is first ascertained by a numerical optimization to obtain a uniform sheet temperature. The time-dependent optimal heater input is then determined to decrease the temperature difference through the direction of the thickness using the response surface method and the D-optimal method. The optimal results show that the time-dependent optimum heater power distribution gives an acceptable uniform sheet temperature in the forming temperature range by the end of the heating process.

  • Recently, the efficiency of power transformer is improved as well as the size is becoming smaller. So, it is very important that temperature characteristics of the transformer should be estimated and predicted precisely. This paper deals with the temperature distribution of power transformer by simplified 2-D hybrid mesh model. The temperature distribution of model transformer was obtained by CFD algorithm considering natural convection. Heat sources are calculated first by magnetic field analysis based on F.E.M. and are usedas the input data for thermal field problem based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) algorithm. The calculated temperature distribution of the simplified 2-D power transformer model shows good results in accuracy as well as in computing time.

  • Temperature distriburion in a hollow chlinder has been analyzed mathematically. Unsteady condition considered assumed a constant heat flux input from the inside. The results are compared with experimental results of surface temperature rise of a gun barrel during continuous firing. Their agreements are acceptable. Effects of various dimensionless parameters on the surface temperature rise are discussed. For small Biot numbers, the external survface temperature approaches more rapidly to the steady temperature. Temperature difference between internal and external surfaces becomes greater for small Biot number. Steady solution assumed that the gas temperature inside the cylinder varies periodically. Relative amplitude and phase angles between the gas temperature and the internal or external surface temperature are obtained. Phase angles become smaller for large radiancy of gas temperature variation, small external Biot number, or large internal biot number. Relative amplitudes become samller as radiancy of gas temperature variation and internal Biot number become smaller. or external Biot number becomes larger. The solution obtained in this paper can be applied to gun barrels, heat pipes used in heat excangers, and reciprocation engines.

  • The thermal performance characteristics of gas-loaded heat pipe(GLHP) were investigated by using transient diffuse-front model. Numerical evaluation of the GLHP is made with water as a working fluid and Nitrogen as control gas in the stainless steel tube. The transient vapor temperature and wall temperature were obtained. It is found that the temperature profiles and gas mole fraction distribution have been mainly influence by the diffusion between working fluid and noncondensable control gas in the condenser of GLHP. It is also found that he large power input make the diffusion region smaller.
