Shell-and-tube type heat exchangers are generally classified with fixed tube-sheet and floating tube-sheet heat exchangers. In this paper, we employed the fixed tube-sheet heat exchangers. We theoretically investigated the safety evaluation of our shell-tube heat exchanger by axial, bending and equivalent stress of fin tubes, tube plates, channels and shell. Design pressure ranges were chosen pressure($0.6{\sim}2\;MPa$) on tube side and 200 %(3 MPa) of Maximum pressure on shell side for safety evaluation of heat exchangers. This research will be useful for fabrication of heat exchangers to prevent against damage hazard of heat exchangers in operation.
This experimental study measured and analyzed the heat transfer and pressure drop performance of brazed plate heat exchangers. Heat exchangers with different plate numbers of 10, 20, 30, and 40 were used for measurement, and their plate pattern was identical. The experiment was performed with distilled water, by changing the hot-side flow rate, with the cold-side flow rate fixed. The experimental results were compared with the calculated values by correlations based on gasketed plate heat exchangers, and showed that the heat transfer performance and pressure drop of brazed plated heat exchangers were higher than those of gasketed plate heat exchangers. From the variation of the friction factor, it could be inferred that in the flow channels of brazed plate heat exchangers, turbulent flow occurred at Reynolds numbers higher than 500. A new correlation to predict the Nusselt number was developed, and its absolute average deviation was 2.62%, compared with the values from the experimental data.
Application of geothermal energy in buildings has been gaining popularity as it provides the benefits of both heating and cooling a building. Among the various types of geothermal energy systems, ground-coupled heat pump system is the most commonly applied one in South Korea. A ground heat exchanger plays an important role as a heat source in winter and a heat sink in summer. For the stable operation of a ground-coupled heat pump system, a ground heat exchanger should be sized so that it provides sufficient heating and cooling energy. Heating and cooling energies generated in ground heat exchangers mainly depend on the temperature difference between the heating medium in ground heat exchangers and the surrounding ground. In addition, the performance of ground heat exchangers influences the change in ground temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to consider this interrelation between the change in the ground temperature and the performance of ground heat exchanger for an accurate estimation of its performance. However, previous thermal analysis models for ground heat exchangers are not competent enough to allow a complete understanding of this interrelation. Therefore, this study proposes a three-dimensional equivalent, transient ground heat exchanger analysis model. First, a previous thermal analysis model for ground heat exchangers, including an analytical model, a g-function, and a numerical model are analyzed. Next, to overcome the limitations of the previous models, a three-dimensional equivalent, transient ground heat exchanger model is proposed. Finally, this study validated the proposed model with the measurement data of the thermal response test, sandbox test, and TRNSYS DST model. All validation results showed a good agreement. These findings helped us to investigate the thermal performance of ground heat exchangers more accurately than the analytical models, and faster than the numerical models. Furthermore, the proposed model contributes to the design of ground heat exchangers by considering the different operation conditions of buildings.
The heat transfer performance and energy transport ability are relatively high due to higher specific heat. Therefore, it can be used in fields such as heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration and heat exchangers. In this study, liquid-cooling heat exchangers were designed and tested by varying geometry and operating conditions. In addition, liquid-cooling heat exchangers were tested to provide performance data for MPCM slurry. The liquid-cooling heat exchangers had twelve rectangular channels with flow paths of 1, 2, 4 and 12. Silicon rubber heaters were used to control the heat load to the heat exchanger. Heat input ranged from 293 to 800 W, and inlet temperatures of working fluid varied from 15S to $27^{\circ}C$. The standard deviation of surface temperature was strongly affected by the coolant of MPCM Slurry, All MPCM-cooling heat exchangers showed higher cooling performance than the water-cooling heat exchanger except one path channel heat exchanger.
In this work energy and entransy characteristics of heat exchangers are analyzed for 12 different flow arrangements of heat exchangers. The dimensionless parameters are number of entransy dissipation (Ng), number of entransy dissipation-based thermal resistance (Nr), and entransy dissipation-based effectiveness of heat-exchanger (εg). The dimensionless parameters are expressed analytically in terms of the effectiveness of heat exchanger (ε), heat capacity ratio (c), and number of transfer unit (N) for optimal performance of heat exchangers. Results showed that the dimensionless parameters based on the entransy dissipation can be useful concepts for optimal design of heat exchangers.
As operating time of heat exchangers progresses, fouling generated by water-borne deposits increases and thermal performance decreases. The fouling is known to interfere with normal flow characteristics and reduce thermal efficiencies of heat exchangers. The heat exchangers of nuclear power plants have been analyzed in terms of the heat flux and heat transfer coefficient at test conditions based on the ASME OM-S/G-Part 2 as a means of heat exchanger management. It is hard to estimate the heat performance trend and to establish the future management plan. This paper describes the fouling evaluation method which can evaluate the thermal performance for heat exchangers and estimate the future fouling variations and the plugging margin evaluation method which can reflect the current fouling level developed in this study. To develop the fouling and plugging margin evaluation methods for heat exchangers, fouling factor was introduced based on the ASME O&M codes and TEMA standards. For the purpose of verifying the two evaluation methods, the fouling and plugging margin evaluations were performed for a component cooling heat exchanger in a nuclear power plant.
The objective of this study Is to investigate the heat transfer performance of plate discrete fin-and-tube heat exchangers with large fin pitch. In this study, twenty-two heat exchangers were tested with a variation of fin pitch, number of tube row, longitudinal tube pitch and fin alignment. Discrete fin type exchangers improved heat transfer performance more than 10% compared to tile continuous fin type heat exchangers. The air-side heat transfer coefficient decreased with a reduction of the fin pitch and an increase of the number of tube row, The staggered fin alignment improved heat transfer performance more than 6% compared to the inline fin alignment. The effect of longitudinal tube pitch was insignificant on the j-factor and experiments found opposite effects on the j-factor with respect to fin alignment. Heat transfer correlations were developed from the measured data for flat plate discrete fin-and-tube heat exchangers with large fin pitch. The correlations yielded good predictions of the measured data with mean deviations of 1,4% and 0.3% for tire inline and staggered tube alignment, respectively.
Slim telecommunication cabinet cooler, equipped with parallel flow heat exchangers and operating with R-22, is developed. The performance is compared with imported one, equipped with fin-tube heat exchangers and operating with R-134a. Test results show that the newly-developed cooler increases the cooling capacity by 6% and EER by 33%. The refrigerant charge for the developed cooler is 500g compared with 1250g for the imported one. The adoption of parallel flow heat exchanger appears to have reduced the refrigerant charge. In addition, it is shown that the reduced air flow rates through parallel heat exchangers as compared with those through fin-tube heat exchangers are beneficial to the reduction of the equipment noise.
The capacity optimization of the heat exchanger of the TEM dehumidifier was performed through numerical analysis. If the ratio of the size of heat exchangers on the cold and hot surfaces of the TEM is not appropriate, the larger the size of the heat exchanger results the lower performance and efficiency. Optimizing the ratio of heat exchangers on the cold surface of TEM can improve the performance and the efficiency compared to when the ratio is 50%. The optimal proportion of cold surface heat exchangers is inversely proportional to the sum of the size of the heat exchangers on the cold and hot surfaces. When the optimum ratio of cold surface heat exchanger was applied, the larger the sum of size of the two heat exchangers results the greater the improvement of the performance and efficiency, compared to when the ratio of cold surface heat exchangers is 50%.

There are a variety of heat exchangers used in automobiles, such as shell and tube heat exchangers, double tube heat exchangers, and plate heat exchangers. Most of them are water-cooled to prevent engine overheating. There have been reports of corrosion damage to these heat exchangers due to continuous wetting caused by external temperature differences, road pollutants, and snow removal. In addition, galvanic corrosion, which occurs when two dissimilar materials come into contact, has been identified as a major cause. In this study, corrosion characteristics and galvanic corrosion behavior of Al alloy (AA3003, AA4045 and AA7072) used in automobile heat exchangers were analyzed. Effective clad materials for heat exchanger tubes and fins were also evaluated. It was found that AA7072 should be applied as the cladding material for fin AA3003 and that AA4045 was suitable as a cladding material for tube AA3003 because this clad materials application was the most effective clad design to delay the occurrence of pinhole in the tube. Main factors influencing galvanic corrosion dissolution were found to be galvanic corrosion potential difference and galvanic corrosion current density.
