In this study, a highly efficient shell-and-tube heat exchanger with plate fins is considered to improve thermal performance of the conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger. This type of shell-and-tube heat exchanger with plate fins of various shape is simulated three-dimensionally using a commercial thermal-fluid analysis code. CFX4.4. The effect of the shape of the plate fin on heat transfer characteristics is also investigated by the simulation. Plate fins of four different shapes. plane, plane-slit. wave. and wave-slit fins, are considered. The flow fields, pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in the heat exchanger are calculated. It is proved that the shell-and-tube heat exchanger with plate fins is superior to the conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger without plate fins in terms of heat transfer. The shape of the plate fin is important in the performance of a heat exchanger such as heat transfer and pressure drop.

In the present study, we used a loop thermosyphon heat exchanger consisting of condensers with internal fins and external plate fins which are 480 mm wide, 68 mm long, and 1,000 mm high. The heat transfer pipes in the heat exchanger were 15 mm in diameter and 1,000 mm in length, and 98 heat transfer pipes were installed in the heat exchanger. According to the experimental results, as the spaces between the internal discontinuous pins decreased, the frequency of pressure drops increased and changes in temperature at the outlet of the condenser were shown to be a little smaller. Therefore, we can see that as the spaces between internal discontinuous pins decreased, the heat transfer performance increased. For the loop heat pipe heat exchanger consisting of a condenser with internal and plate fins, as the temperature of the air flowing into the condenser increased, the condensation heat transfer rate also increased, and as the condenser refrigerant inflow temperature increased, the condensation heat transfer rate increased as well.

This study is discussed about the heat transfer coefficient and the fin efficiency of the heat exchanger having plate fins. A new definition for the fin efficiency of the heat exchanger is proposed. More than one hundred cases were tested numerically for the plate fins having uniform and non-uniform heat transfer coefficient. The previous models for the fin efficiency and the pure heat transfer coefficient were applicable to the heat exchanger only when the NTU is very small. It was found that the fin efficiency of the heat exchanger was nearly the same as the normalized fin temperature. The present model could estimate the pure heat transfer coefficient within a few percent in the present test range of 0<NTU<2.5.

The present experimental study investigates the impact of porous fins on the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in plate-fin heat exchangers. Systematic experiments have been carried out in a simplified model of a plate-porous fin heat exchanger at a controlled test environment. Comparison of performance between the porous fins and the conventional louvered fins has been made. The experimental results indicate that friction and heat transfer rate are significantly affected by permeability as well as porosity of the porous fin. The porous fins used in the present study show a similar air-side performance to the louvered fin. The correlations of friction and modified j-factor are also given for the design of the plate-porous fin heat exchanger.

The present study examined the effects of various guide fin structures and boundary parameters on the thermal performance of heat exchangers used in heat recovery thermoelectric generators. The heat transfer rate and pressure drop of the heat exchangers without fins, with circular fins, with triangular fins, and with combined circular and triangular fins were simulated numerically using ANSYS 19.1 commercial code to confirm the effect of the guide fin structures. The heat transfer rate of the heat exchanger with combined fins was 27.0%, 5.2%, and 1.5% higher than those without fins, with circular fins, and with triangular fins, respectively. The pressure drop characteristic of the heat exchanger with the combined fins was 28.3% higher than that without fins but 9.2% and 10.5% lower than those with circular fins and with triangular fins, respectively. The heat exchanger with combined fins as the optimal model showed the highest heat transfer rate of 5664.9 W and pressure drop of 1454.02 Pa for highest hot gas temperature, maximum flow rates of hot gas and coolant, and lowest coolant temperature.

In this study, high performance waste heat recovery heat exchanger was developed using the bayonet tube with spiral serrated fins. Especially, heat exchanger of the bayonet tube type was operated well because of double water passes mechanism and characteristics. A cooling water Passes down inner tubes to thimble-form tubes, then flows back up as it boils. The heat exchanger of bayonet tube type was composed of steel tube with 7channels$(I.D_1\;14mm.\;I.D_2\;31.6mm)$ and spiral serrated fins. The performance tests were conducted under the following conditions A cooling water flow rate was 273kg/h and engine l·pm was varied from 750rpm to 3500 rpm. From the experimental result. waste heat recovery was 9.21kW when engine rpm was 3500. and pressure drop was $15\~260mmHg/m^3$ The effectiveness of heat exchanger was about /$0.7\~0.9$. The performance of heat exchanger was evaluated by using the $\varepsilon-NTU$ method. In the study the NTU of the heat exchanger was $1.57\~2.33$.

The air and refrigerant side heat transfer performances are key parameters to improve heat transfer efficiency of the heat exchanger including the fan performance. Design of the fins, treatment of the tube inside, tube diameter and tube array effect heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is used as a condenser at cooling mode and used as an evaporator at heating mode in the heat pump system. The heat pump system uses R410A as the refrigerant. The heat exchangers are consisted with 7 mm diameter tubes with slit-type fins. The study was conducted with variation of arrangement of the refrigerant path and air flow rate and refrigerant pressure drop and heat transfer rate were measured with a code tester. The capacity of the 3 path heat exchanger is more efficient than 2 or 4 path heat exchangers in heating or cooling modes.

This paper employs numerical tools to obtain an optimal thermal design of a heat exchanger with plain-fins. This heat exchanger is located at the condensing section of a crevice-type heat pipe. The plain-fins in the heat exchanger are radically mounted to two tubes in the condensing section. To obtain the optimal design parameters, a computational fluid dynamics technique is introduced and applied to different placement configurations in a system module. Owing to its effects on the heat pipe performance, the temperature difference between the tube surfaces and ambient air is investigated in detail. A greater heat dissipation rate occurs when the plain-fin offsets change from 2 to 3 mm. When this temperature difference is ${\Delta}T=70^{\circ}C$, the upper part of the plain-fins undergoes an accumulation of heat. At below $70^{\circ}C$, the dissipation of heat is accepted. A rectangular plain-fin geometry with varying widths and heights does not have a significant impact on the heat dissipation through-out the overall system. In addition, the temperature distributions between different plain-fin pitches show an equal profile even with different fin pitches.

Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in compact heat exchanger with flat tubes and continuous plate fins having a symmetric and non-symm etric staggered arrangements. Simulation results such as air velocity and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer coefficients are compared with previous experimental results. In order to investigate the flow and heat transfer features by periodic boundary conditions, the three blocks were used. Predicted heat transfer coefficients between the three blocks are similar while there are relatively differences, compared with the experimental data. From the calculated results a correlation for Colburn j factor in the compact heat exchanger system is suggested. The predicted results in this study can be applied to the optimal design of air conditioning system.

Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in a compact heat exchanger with circular tubes and continuous plate fins. Simulation results such as air velocity and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer coefficients are compared with previous experimental correlations. Three models of standard and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$, and Reynolds stress are applied for turbulence model applicability. Predicted heat transfer coefficient from the models of standard and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ are very close to those of the heat transfer correlations while there are relatively large difference, more than 17 percentage in the result from the Reynolds stress model. From the calculated results a correlation for Colburn j factor in the compact heat exchanger system is suggested.
