Comparative Performance Analysis of Ammonia-Water Rankine Cycle and Kalina Cycle for Recovery of Low-Temperature Heat Source (저온 열원 발전을 위한 암모니아-물 랭킨 사이클과 칼리나 사이클의 성능특성의 비교 해석)

  • This paper presents a comparative analysis of thermodynamic performance of ammonia-water Rankine cycles with and without regeneration and Kalina cycle for recovery of low-temperature heat source. Special attention is paid to the effect of system parameters such as ammonia mass fraction and turbine inlet pressure on the characteristics of the system. Results show that maximum net power can be obtained in the regenerative Rankine cycle for high turbine inlet pressures. However, Kalina cycle shows better net power and thermal efficiency for low turbine inlet pressures, and the optimum ammonia mass fractions of Kalina cycle are lower than Rankine cycles.

  • Since the energy demand for refrigeration and air-conditioning has greatly increased all over the world, thermally activated refrigeration cycle has attracted much attention. This study carries out a performance analysis of a vapor compression cycle (VCC) driven by organic Rankine cycle (ORC) utilizing low-temperature heat source in the form of sensible heat. The ORC is assumed to produce minimum net work which is required to drive the VCC without generating an excess electricity. Effects of important system parameters such as turbine inlet pressure, condensing temperature, and evaporating temperature on the system variables such as mass flow ratio, net work production, and coefficient of performance (COP) are thoroughly investigated. The effect of choice of working fluid on COP is also considered. Results show that net work production and COP increase with increasing turbine inlet pressure or decreasing condensing temperature. Out of the five kinds of organic fluids considered $C_4H_{10}$ gives a relatively high COP in the range of low turbine inlet pressure.

  • The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and the Kalina cycle system (KCS) are being considered as the most feasible and promising ways to recover the low-grade finite heat sources. This paper presents a comparative exergetical performance analysis for ORC and Kalina cycle using ammonia-water mixture as the working fluid for the recovery of low-grade heat. Effects of the system parameters such as working fluid selection, turbine inlet pressure, and mass fraction of ammonia on the exergetical performance are parametrically investigated. KCS gives lower lower exergy destruction ratio at evaporator and higher second-law efficiency than ORC. The maximum exergy efficiency of ORC is higher than KCS.

  • In this research, we describe the methodology and the quantification about GHG reduction effects, expected by optimization of operation mode according to establishing additional heat storage system of Bundang Combined Cycle Power Plant. As an intermediate form of General Combined Cycle Power Plant and Heat supply only district heating plant, Bundang Combined Cycle Power Plant(and Ilsan, Anyang, Bucheon) is possible to satisfy demand for the electrical load and thermal load capacity at the same time through changes to the operation mode itself. Therefore, through the operating transition of high-efficiency mode that the condenser cooling water is recovered and supplied to district heat and cooling, establishing additional heat storage system have flexible supply ability at the power and heat market. In this research, We calculated using the operating performance for the last three years(2008~2010) and efficiency of each mode-specific values. As a result, GHG reduction effects were calculated as $97.95kg_{-}CO_2/Gcal$ per heat energy 1 Gcal supplied at the heat storage system and we expected emmision reduction effect about $13,500Ton_{-}CO_2/yr$.

Experimental Research on an Organic Rankine Cycle Using Engine Exhaust Gas (엔진 배기열 이용 유기랭킨사이클에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, an organic Rankine cycle(ORC) for gas engine waste heat recovery for industry has been constructed and a performance analysis test has been carried out. Shell & tube style heat exchanger has been equipped on an engine exhaust manifold in order to absorb heat of engine exhaust gas into the working fluid(refrigerant R134a). Under 60 kW of engine power output, about 63 kW of engine exhaust gas heat was discharged and the proportion of heat recovered was 68~73% while 43~46 kW of heat was absorbed into working fluid. Consequently rated power output of ORC was 4.6 kW while the ratio of rated power output to engine exhaust gas heat was 7.3%.

  • A experimental study of a high efficiency transport refrigeration system for sliced-raw fish transportation is presented in this paper. The refrigeration system, that is powered by the car engine, is equipped with heat storage for reverse cycle-hot gas defrost; the stored heat is used during defrost cycle of the system. The heat storage has size $400(L){\times}350(W){\times}250(H)\;mm$ and made of fin-tube heat exchanger. System performance and container operating conditions are experimentally investigated and analyzed under cooling and defrosting conditions with heat storage materials. The water is faster about 30% than paraffin in cooling-down time of heat storage materials with load and unload.

Experimental exergy assessment of ground source heat pump system

  • The principal intention of this experimental work is to confer upon the exergy study of GSHP associated with horizontal earth heat exchanger for space heating. The exergy analysis recognizes the assessment of the tendency of various energy flows and quantifies the extensive impression of inefficiencies in the system and its components. Consequently, this study intends to provide the enlightenment for well interpretation of exergy concept for GSHP. This GSHP system is composed of heat pump cycle, earth heat exchanger cycle and fan coil cycle. All the required data were measured and recorded when the experimental set up run at steady state and average of the measured data were used for exergy investigation purpose. In this study the rate at which exergy destructed at all the subsystems and system has been estimated using the analytical expression. The overall rational exergetic efficiency of the GSHP system was evaluated for estimating its effectiveness. Hence, we draw the exergy flow diagram by using the various calculated results. The result shows that in the whole system the maximum exergy destruction rate component was compressor and minimum exergy flow component was earth heat exchanger. Consequently, compressor and earth heat exchanger need to be pay more attention.

  • The drying model has been used to obtain the fundamental information required to design the heat pump dryer with the simple thermodynamic model. In the model, the input conditions are crucial to obtain the acceptable results. The model includes one-stage heat pump cycle, simple drying process using the drying efficiency. The drying efficiency is defined with the conditions of inlet and outlet in the dryer. The experiment has been carried out in the pilot dryer with one-stage heat pump cycle. Refrigerant 134a is used in the heat pump cycle. In the dryer, some of drying air flows through the heat pump system and the rest of air bypasses the heat pump system and circulates through the drying chamber. Some operating conditions from the pilot dryer are used as input conditions of the model and the results are compared with experimental results for the validation.

  • A Beta-type Stirling engine is developed and tested on the operation stability and cycle performance. The flow rate for cooling water ranges from 300 to 1500 ml/min, while the temperature of heat source changes from 300 to $500^{\circ}C$. The internal pressure, working temperatures, and operation speed are measured and the engine performance is estimated from them. In the experiment, the rise in the temperature of heat source reduces internal pressure but increases operation speed, and overall, enhances the power output. The faster coolant flow rate contributes to the high temperature limit for stable operation, the cycle efficiency due to the alleviated thermal expansion of power piston, and the heat input to the engine, respectively. The experimental Stirling engine showed the maximum power output of 12.1 W and the cycle efficiency of 3.0 % when the cooling flow is 900 ml/min and the heat source temperature is $500^{\circ}C$.

  • This article reviews absorption cooling R&D in Europe from the viewpoint of fundamentals, cycle development and applications. The review contains information on R&D, predominantly of public projects in the field of sorption cooling. We report on research which is performed in Europe with some stress on Germany. There is progress in fundamentals, thermodynamic cycle design, and also applications. In the fundamentals part the discussion about thermodynamics, working pairs, and heat and mass transfer is reflected. Today's discussion on thermodynamic cycles is not very strong. Main focus is on special solid sorption cycles, compression­sorption hybrids, and open cycles, In the applications part the chilling business is the main issue. Some interest is given to the improvement of efficiency on and the adaptation to low temperature waste heat use, but the stress is on the use of solar energy as heat source. The area of heat pumping for heating purposes is less prominent but not at all negligible. Finally, industrial heat pumping involves the reverse cycle (heat transformer, heat pump type Ⅱ) also, but there is no significant activity.
