The present study investigated experimentally and numerically the enhancement of absorption performance due to the waviness of falling film in the vertical absorber tube. The momentum, energy and mass diffusion equations were utilized to find out temperature and concentration profiles at both the interfaces of liquid solution and refrigerant vapor and the wall. Flow visualization was performed to find out the wetting characteristics of the falling film. The maximum heat transfer coefficient was obtained for the wavy flow using spring as an insert device through both numerical and experimental studies. Based on the numerical and experimental results, the maximum absorption rate was found for the wavy-flow using spring as the insert device. The differences between experimental and analytical results ranged from $5.0\;to\;25\%\;when\;Re_j>100$.

In general, an absorption chiller or heat pump is operated under the constant cooling water flow rate condition even though the system works with a partial load. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of the cooling water flow rates and the temperature of cooling water on the system performance to find the energy saving methode for the partial load operation of the double effect $H_2O$/LiBr absorption chiller. It is found that the performance of the system is sensitive to the temperature of cooling water than the cooling water flow rate, so the decrease of the performance due to reducing the cooling water flow rate can be overcome with the reduction of the cooling water temperature by 1$^{\circ}C$. The flow rate of the cooling water flow rate ranges from 50% to 100% of the flow rate at normal conditions with a partial load. It is also found that the operation cost of the cooling water pump and the cooling tower can be reduced by 23%.

The objective of this paper is to study the effects of the cooling air mass flow rate and the heat input variation by the simulation and the experiment. An air-cooled $NH_3/H_2O$ absorption chiller is tested in the present study. The nominal cooling capacity of the single effect machine is 17.6 kW (5.0 USRT). The overall conductance (UA) of each component, the cooling capacity, coefficient of performance and each state point are measured with the variation of the cooling air mass flow rate and the heat input. It is found that the COP and cooling capacity increase and then decreases with increasing the heat input. It is also found that the COP and the cooling capacity increase and keep constant with increasing the cooling air mass flow rate. The maximum COP is estimated as 0.51 and the optimum cooling air mass flow rate is $217\;m^3/min$ from the present experiment.
The objectives of this paper are to measure the heat transfer and pressure drop of the plate heat exchangers for absorption system applications. Three types of plate heat exchangers with different chevron angles are tested in the present experiment. Heat transfer and pressure drop performance of plate heat exchangers are measured in various operating conditions, and compared each other. The results show that the heat transfer rate of high theta ($120^{\circ}$) and mixed theta plate heat exchanger increases about 118% and 98% at the solution flow rate 350 kg/h compared to that of low theta ($60^{\circ}$), respectively. The effectiveness of high theta was evaluated about $0.70{\sim}0.83$ in this experimental range.
Characteristics of hydrodynamics and heat absorption by gas in a directly-irradiated fluidized bed particle receiver (50 mm-ID X 150 mm high) of SiC particles have been determined. Solid holdups of SiC particles show almost constant values with increasing gas velocity. Fine SiC particles (SiC II; dp=52 ㎛, ρs=2992 kg/㎥) showed low values of relative standard deviation of pressure drop across bed but high solids holdups in the freeboard region compared to coarse SiC particles (SiC I; dp=123 ㎛, ρs=3015 kg/㎥). The SiC II exhibited higher values of temperature difference normalized by irradiance due to the effect of additional solar heat absorption and heat transfer to the gas by the particles entrained in the freeboard region in addition to the efficient thermal diffusion of the solar heat received at bed surface. Heat absorption rate and efficiency increased with increasing the gas velocity and fluidization number. The SiC II showed maximum heat absorption rate of 17.8 W and thermal efficiency of 14.8%, which are about 33% higher than those of SiC I within the experimental gas velocity range.
Heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of welded plate heat exchanger are studied to apply it for the solution heat exchanger of 210RT absorption system. This study quantifies the effect of mass flow rate and strong solution concentration on the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in the plate heat exchanger. The concentration of weak solution is fixed at 55% and the strong solution varies 55%, 57%, and 59% in mass. The results show that the overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop increase linearly with increasing Reynolds number. It is also found that the heat transfer coefficient of hot side increases with increasing the concentration of strong solution while the strong solution concentration has no effect on heat transfer coefficient of cold side.

Numerical analysis was carried out to examine the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of plate heat exchangers for absorption application using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) technique. A commercial CFD software package, FLUENT was used to predict the characteristics of heat transfer, pressure drop and flow distribution within plate heat exchangers. In this paper, a welded plate heat exchanger with the plate of chevron embossing type was numerically analyzed by controlling mass flow rate, solution concentration, and inlet temperatures. The working fluid is $H_2O$/LiBr solution with the LiBr concentration of 50-60% in mass. The numerical simulation shows reasonably good agreement with the experimental results. Also, the numerical results show that plate of the chevron shape gives better results than plate of the elliptical shape from the view points of heat transfer and pressure drop. These results provide a guideline to apply the welded PHE for the solution heat exchanger of absorption systems.

The absorption process of water vapor in a liquid film is an important process in LiBr-Water absorption system. The composition of the gas phase, in which a non-absorbable gas is combined with the absorbate, influences the transport characteristics. In the present work, the absorption processes of water vapor into aqueous solutions of lithium bromide in the presence of non-absorbable gas are investigated. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and gas are formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. It is found that the mass transfer resistance in gas phase increases with the concentration of non-absorbable gas. However the primary resistance to mass transfer is in the liquid phase. As the concentration of non-absorbable gas in the absorbate increases, the interfacial temperature and concentration of absorbate in solution decrease, which results in the reduction of absorption rate. The reduction of mass transfer rate is found to be significant for the addition of a small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor, especially at the outlet of tube where the non-absorbable gas accumulates. At higher non-absorbable gas concentration, the decrease of absorption rate seems to be linear to the concentration of non-absorbable gas.

The objective of this paper is to study the effects of the input gas flow rate and the ambient temperature variation on the absorption cycle performance. An air-cooled NH$_3$-$H_2O$ absorption chiller is tested in the present study. The nominal cooling capacity of the single effect maching is 17.6 ㎾ (5.0 USRT). The cooling capacity, coefficient of performance, burner efficiency, and each state point are measured with the variations of the heat input and the ambient temperature. It is found that the COP and cooling capacity increase with increasing the generator exit temperature up to a certain temperature and then decrease. It is also found that the COP and the cooling capacity decrease with increasing the ambient temperature. The maximum COP of 0.51 is obtained from the present experiment.
The objectives of this paper are to examine the effect of nano-particles on the pool type absorption heat transfer enhancement and to find the optimal conditions to design a highly effective compact absorber for $NH_3/H_2O$ absorption system. The effect of $Al_2O_3$ and CNT particles on the absorption performance is studied experimentally. The experimental ranges of the key parameters are 20% of $NH_3$ concentration, $0{\sim}0.08%$ (volume fraction) of CNT particles, and $0{\sim}0.06%$ (volume fraction) of $Al_2O_3$ nano-particles. For the $NH_3/H_2O$ nanofluids, the heat transfer rate and absorption rate with 0.02 vol% $Al_2O_3$ nano-particles were found to be 28.9% and 17.8% higher than those without nano-particles, respectively. It is recommended that the concentration of 0.02 vol% of $Al_2O_3$ nano-particles be the best candidate for $NH_3/H_2O$ absorption performance enhancement.
