Geothermal-energy has been getting popular as a natural energy source for green buildings these days. As a result Geothermal Source Heat Pump System (GSHPs) was being recognized effective alternative systems to conventional heating and cooling systems owing to their higher energy utilization efficiency. But GSHPs has not been popularized thereby the large amount of initial cost of the system and insufficiency of studies for economic estimation. Therefore GSHPs are being developed to make up for the weak points that are the large amount of initial cost of the system and much annual electricity consumption. In this paper, economic estimation was conducted by payback period method and it shows that the pay back period of Heat Storage Type GSHPs was calculated 6.8 years compared with the absorption Chiller-Heater system and 8.2 years compared with the Ice storage-Boiler system. Heat Storage Type GSHPs also has the lower annual source energy consumption than the conventional heating and cooling systems because of using nighttime electricity.

The shape and array of ice capsules are very important factors in ice thermal storage system because the heat transfer rate of the system strongly depends upon them. In this paper, a new type of ice capsule composed of bar and ring module is proposed to increase the efficiency of the ice thermal storage system. To investigate the heat transfer rate of the proposed ice capsule, numerical analysis of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is performed to compare the proposed bar and ring system with the conventional ice capsules. It is shown that the ice capsule composed of bar and ring has a higher heat transfer rate and a low outlet temperature than the conventional ice capsules for various packing ratios and entrance velocities. Furthermore, it is found that the optimal entrance velocity exists between 0.005 m/s and 0.007 m/s from the present numerical analysis.
Solar energy has attracted wide attention as a promising renewable energy source. The goal of this paper is to estimate the dynamic performance of solar flat plate collector system according to the weather conditions and the capacity of heat storage tank. This study provides a detailed description of the modeling methods and materials of the system. The effects of the daily clearness index and the volume of the heat storage tank on the hourly and daily performances of the system are numerically investigated. Special attention is focused on the important system variables including the solar insolation on the collector surface, useful energy, heat loss at the collector, and collector efficiency.
Performance of the raw water-source heat pump system with a thermal storage tank has been analyzed in winter season. The raw water is transferred through the multi-regional water supply system from Han river. Raw water is large temperature difference resource compared with groundwater. Although the raw water temperature drops to $0.6^{\circ}C$ due to the heavy snowfall and the severe cold in late January and early February, 2010, the system has been normally operated without any trouble this winter. The unit COP and system COP considered all pump power consumption were estimated based on the second-by-second data of the all sensors. The monthly averaged unit COP and system COP are 3.37 and 2.76 respectively with $1.4^{\circ}C$ of raw water in January, 3.55 and 2.89 with $1.6^{\circ}C$ raw water in February, 3.82 and 3.15 with $5.4^{\circ}C$ raw water in March. The performance of the system are increased with raw water temperature, and the COPs are higher than the water-to-air heat pump system using relatively high temperature raw water from Daecheong reservoir because the water-to-water system was operated on the full load condition and was stopped when the thermal storage tank was full of the high temperature water.
Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) system can be very cost-effective and renewable energy sources, depending on site-specific parameters and load characteristics. In order to develop an ATES system which has certain hydrogeological characteristics, understanding of the thermo hydraulic processes of an aquifer is necessary for a proper design of an aquifer heat storage system under given conditions. The thermo hydraulic transfer for heat storage is simulated using FEFLOW according to two sets of pumping and waste water reinjection scenarios of heat pump operation in a two layered confined aquifer. In the first set of model, the movement of the thermal front and groundwater level are simulated by changing the locations of injection and pumping well in seasonal cycle. However, in the second set of model the simulation is performed in the state of fixing the locations of pumping and injection well. After 365 days simulation period, the temperature distribution is dominated by injected water temperature and the distance from injection well. The small temperature change is appears on the surface compared to other slices of depth because the first layer has very low porosity and the transfer of thermal energy are sensitive at the porosity of each layer. The groundwater levels and temperature changes in injection and pumping wells are monitored to validate the effectiveness of the used heat pump operation method and the thermal interference between wells is analyzed.
Each country in the world currently concentrates on shifting into clean energy, which can be alternative energy, for global environment protection and solution to the problem of fossil fuel depletion. The Korean government is predicted to develop renewable energy, such as solar power, ground power, and offshore wind power, and to increase their supply ratios by ending the use of coals and nuclear power plants. This study conducted experiments on thermal storage performance of Trombe wall thermal storage materials using solar power and simulations in order to offer baseline data for the development of a hybrid air circulation system for heating that can maximize efficiency by simultaneously using solar and geothermal power. The study results are as follows: (1) In all the specimens with 3m, 5m, and 7m in the length of thermal storage pipe, $5.7^{\circ}C$, $7.8^{\circ}C$, and $10.5^{\circ}C$ rose, respectively, as the thermal storage effect of the specimens attaching insulation film and black tape to the general funnel. They were most excellent in terms of thermal storage effect. (2) As a result of thermal performance evaluation on the II type specimens, II-3 ($7.8^{\circ}C$ rise) > II-4 ($5.3^{\circ}C$ rise) > II-1 ($3.9^{\circ}C$ rise) > II-2 ($2.3^{\circ}C$ rise) was revealed, and thus II-3 (insulation film + black tape) was most effective as shown in the I type. (3) This study analyzed air current and temperature distribution inside of the greenhouse by linking actually measured values and simulation interpretation results through the interpretation of CFD (computational fluid dynamics). As a result, the parts absorbing heat and discharging heat around the thermal storage pipe could be visibly classified, and temperature distribution inside of the greenhouse around the thermal storage pipe could be figured out.
This study suggested fanless thermal design using CAE technique for the information storage system under the serious thermal problem. At first, main heat flow was controlled by CAE based fanless heat sink design not to influence sensitive optical pick-up sensor. Then, vent parametric studies found a thermal solution about highly concentrated case top heat due to fanless. These CAE results were verified by experimental methods. As a consequence of newly designed thermal path, thermal specification of optical pick-up sensor was satisfied and fanless thermal design for the information storage system was achieved.
A refrigerant-subcooling refrigeration system consisted of a typical single vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, a subcooler, and an ice storage tank. The degree of subcooling at the exit of the condenser can be increased by the heat exchange between the subcooler and the ice storage tank. The cold heat in the ice storage tank was stored by using the refrigeration cycle during night time and then used to absorb the heat from the subcooler during daytime. The performance of the refrigerant-subcooling refrigeration system was measured by varying the degree of subcooling. In addition, the performance characteristics of the present system were compared with those of a conventional refrigeration system. The mass flow rate of the present system was higher than that of the conventional system due to the increase in the degree of subcooling. Generally, the refrigerant-subcooling system showed superior performance to the conventional refrigeration system.
The purpose of this study was to show how tomaintain high efficiency and to use reasonably when being applied the cold-heat storage systems to the showcase. An experimental study was performed to manufacture the showcase system in a laboratory. Comparing the result at general operation condition with that of the new condition using ice storage system, this study showed the effects of the refrigerant sub-cooling, and with using inverter. Using ice storage system, the ice making process was operated during midnight being not needed the cooling of the showcase through the continuous running of the condenser unit. And then, the refrigerant was sub-cooled using the stored cold-heat after being discharged from the air cooling condenser during the day time. Through the experiments, the load transfer rate for the showcase using inverter and ice storage was estimated about 30.0%. And showed that the total power consumption of the showcase with inverter could be reduced about 37% than that of the showcase without inverter.
This paper investigates coupled thermal, mechanical and hydraulic phenomena in deep rock mass especially for underground heat storage system. Firstly, concepts of underground heat storage were presented and coupling phenomena in this area were illustrated. In order to understand the basic mechanism of thermal, hydraulic and deformation behavior in rock cavern disturbed by thermal gradient about 10$0^{\circ}C$, various numerical experiments were conducted using several codes. The study involves the behavior of fractured rock mass including rock joint. In spite of the limitation of codes modelling fully coupled effects, these codes could be applied in analysis of underground heat storage. The heat loss in rock mass, which is a major factor in heat storage, is insignificant in all results.
