  • While heat island has been recognized as an unique environmental nuisance in cities, the phenomenon tends to be regarded as an inevitable side effect on urbanization. Recently the nature of the heat island has been disclosed and efforts for the remedy have been discussed in many ways. Some pioneering actions have been taken to mitigate the strength of the heat island's intensity in several countries. After studies for the heat island and speculations on current pilot policies of 3 different countries has been done, mitigation policies for heat island has been suggested as followings. 1. Preservation of natural topography is essential because latent energy consumption(evapotranspiration) from the site is the single most important factor to mitigate the energy surplus caused by urban heat island. 2. Because current national zoning ordinance or building law can not effectively control the site specific local environment, heat island policy should be established or employed at local level. 3. Incentives for the mitigation should be adopted on the process of implementation because environment is public concern. 4. Wind can easily dissipate energy surplus which is the major driving force for heat island. Therefore local wind, the direction and intensity should be sustained and sometimes facilitated fully through policies.

  • Population growth and rapid urbanization has been converting large amounts of rural vegetation into urbanized areas. This human induced change has increased temperature in urban areas in comparison to adjacent rural regions. Various studies regarding to urban heat island have been conducted in different disciplines in order to analyze the environmental issue. Especially, different types of thermal infrared remote sensing data are applied to urban heat island research. This article reviews research focusing on thermal infrared remote sensing for urban heat island and urban planning studies. Seven studies of analyses for the relationships between urban heat island and other dependent indicators in urban planning discipline are reviewed. Despite of different types of thermal infrared remote sensing data, units of analysis, land use and land cover, and other dependent variable, each study results in meaningful outputs which can be implemented in urban planning strategies. As the application of thermal infrared remote sensing data is critical to measure urban heat island, it is important to understand its advantages and disadvantages for better analyses of urban heat island based on this review. Despite of its limitations - spatial resolution, overpass time, and revisiting cycle, it is meaningful to conduct future research on urban heat island with thermal infrared remote sensing data as well as its application to urban planning disciplines. Based on the results from this review, future research with remotely sensed data of urban heat island and urban planning could be modified and better results and mitigation strategies could be developed.

  • Green roofs can reduce surface water runoff, provide a habitat for wildlife moderate the urban heat island effect, improve building insulation and energy efficiency, improve the air quality, create aesthetic and amenity value, and preserve the roof's waterproofing. Green roofs are mainly divided into three types : intensive, simple-intensive, and extensive. Especially, extensive roof environment is a harsh one for plant growth; limited water availability, wide temperature fluctuations, high exposure to wind and solar radiation create highly stressed environment. This study, aimed at extensive green roof, was carried out on the rooftop of the library at Seoul Women's Univ. from October to November, 2012 and from March to August, 2013. To suggest the most effective vegetation model for biodiversity and heat island mitigation, surface temperatures were monitored by each vegetation model. We found that herbaceous plants of Aster sphathulifolius, Aceriphyllum rossii and Belamcanda chinensis, shrub of Syringa patula 'Miss Kim', Thymus quinquecostatus var. japonica, Sedum species can mixing each other. Among them, the vegetation models including Sedum takesimense, Aster sphathulifolius, Thymus quinquecostatus var. japonica was more effective on the surface temperature mitigation, because the species have the tolerance and high ratio of covering, and also in water. Especially, in the treatment of bark mulching, they helped to increase the temperature of vegetation models. In the case of summer, temperature mitigation of vegetation models were no significant difference among vegetation types. Compared to surface temperature of June, July and August were apparent impact of temperature mitigation, it shows that temperature mitigation are strongly influenced by substrate water content.

  • The overall aim of this study is to mitigate urban environmental problems. In particular, to reduce the effects of urban heat island phenomenon which is one of the urban planning perspective. This study focused on the analysis of the relationship between the urban heat island effect and the thermal and wind properties. To do this analysis, water space was virtually made at Yeol_Mae village Apt. Because it is very difficult to set up water space for the existing apartment complexes due to realistic constraints. This study, therefore has a strong sort of guidelines to create water space for newly formed city. It was based on the concept of virtual city through an in-depth analysis on reduction of urban heat island effects for the existing apartment along with creation of water space. To analysis site, Envi-Met Model developed by Michael Bruse was used. The results are as follows. The temperature went from 298.9K to 297.82K and The wind speed went from 1.42m/s to 1.43m/s. The results are slight in this study because creation of water space is planned to a small area of an apartment complex. But if the water space would be applied to a whole city, the mitigation effect of urban heat island would be bigger.

  • Taegu is notorious as hot and dry summer among Korea cities. One of the most important goals of the open space planning is to ameliorate urban climate of the city. The objective of this research is to evaluate the thermal mitigation effect of the cool islands in Taegu metropolitan city. Cool islands of this paper includes parks and rivers surrounded by or adjacent to urbanized areas. Based on the analysis of the thermal band of Landsat TM at May 17, 1997, the thermal mitigation effect of open spaces in the city could be summarized as follows ; Kumho river showed the largest mitigation effect in terms of the width of mitigation zone and temperature difference. Evaporation from wide water surface and evapo-transpiration from riparian grass land could bring into results. Significant mitigation effect of parks covered with forest can be observed. The temperature range of such parks were between 19.05$^{\circ}C$ and 19.44$^{\circ}C$ However, the thermal mitigation effect of Dalsung park and Apsan park was insignificant. The small size and high percentage of hard paving of the former and the relative low density of the residential areas adjacent to the latter could be the main reason. In conclusion, the thermal mitigation effect in urban ope spaces could be detectedby the employment of thermal band data of Landsat TM and GIS buffering technique.

  • As urbanization has been expanded in Korea, open spaces, such as urban parks and public sites, have been utilized for other uses, and then this bring out environmental changes for the worse. It is expected that these changes become more serious problems due to overpopulation, increasing individualism, and development of transportation. This research base on the consideration of connecting between decreasing urban green spaces and distributed green sites so as to build the substantial plan for the Green Network construction for urban heat island mitigation in Dalseo district, Daegu Metropolitan City. The result were as follow; 1) Connecting existing natural sites to the remained parks green zone made an Ideal form of Green-Network system. 2) Some school sites were selected for usable open spaces in order to build Green-Network system, and the plan connecting together with exist natural sites was suggested. 3) Moreover, the scheme of planting on the road spaces for connecting green spaces was proposed. 4) The devices of planting on the urban riverside for enhancing the role of urban stream to form green network was conceived.

  • Application examples of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the planning stage of high-rise buildings are introduced. First, we introduce examples of applications in the environmental field. The pedestrian wind environment was one of the earliest practical examples of CFD. CFD was also employed to validate the heat island mitigation measures proposed as part of the new construction plan. Second, application examples of wind-force evaluations are introduced. Prediction examples are presented for the peak wind pressure around a complex-shaped building and the wind force evaluation for a base-isolated building. The results prove that the results of the proper execution of CFD are equivalent to those of the wind tunnel experiment. As examples of CFD applications of other issues related to high-rise building planning, we introduce snow accretion on outer walls and high-temperature exhaust from emergency generators. Finally, the future prospects for the use of CFD are discussed.

  • Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect has been widely studied as a global concern of the 21st century. Heat generation from urban built-up structures and anthropogenic heat sources are the main factors to create UHIs. Unfortunately, both factors are expanding rapidly in Lahore and accelerating UHI effects. The effects of UHI are expanding with the expansion of impermeable surfaces towards urban green areas. Therefore, this study was arranged to analyze the role of urban cooling intensity in reducing urban heat island effects. For this purpose, 15 parks were selected to analyze their effects on the land surface temperature (LST) of Lahore. The study obtained two images of Landsat-8 based on seasons: the first of June-2018 for summer and the second of November-2018 for winter. The LST of the study area was calculated using the radiative transfer equation (RTE) method. The results show that the theme parks have the largest cooling effect while the linear parks have the lowest. The mean park LST and PCI of the samples are also positively correlated with the fractional vegetation cover (FVC) and normalized difference water index (NDWI). So, it is concluded that urban parks play a positive role in reducing and mitigating LST and UHI effects. Therefore, it is suggested that the increase of vegetation cover should be used to develop impervious surfaces and sustainable landscape planning.

  • Today's cities require deeper understanding of the thermal environment and PM10 as their management becomes more critical. Based on these circumstances, this study investigated the Granger causality between the thermal environment and PM10 of the 25 districts of Seoul, the most populous and urbanized city in Korea. The results of the Granger causality test on the thermal environment and PM10 were classified into 12 types. Except for type 12, the temperature and urban island heat intensity of the other 11 types operated as a Granger-cause to each other in both directions. Temperature operates as a Granger-cause of urban island heat intensity in type 12. The PM10 level and urban pollution island intensity operated as a Granger-cause to each other in all districts. For types 1 and 2, thermal environment operated as a Granger-cause to PM10 in one direction, and type 3-type 12 confirmed that thermal environment and PM10 operated as a Granger-cause in both directions. Findings reveal the intricate causalities between thermal environment and PM10 at the district level and suggest mitigation strategies that are more location based.

  • Since it is important to understand the bio-climatic change in Seoul for ecological city planning in the future, this paper gives an overview on bio-climate analysis of urban environments at Seoul. We analyzed its characteristics in recent years using the observations of 24 of Automatic Weather Station (AWS) by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). In urbanization, Seoul metropolitan area is densely populated and is concentrated with high buildings. This urban activity changes land covering, which modifies the local circulation of radiation, heat and moisture, precipitation and creating a specific climate. Urban climate is evidently manifested in the phenomena of the increase of the air temperature, called urban heat Island and in addition urban sqall line of heavy rain. Since a city has its different land cover and street structure, these form their own climate character such as climate comfort zone. The thermal fold in urban area such as the heat island is produced by the change of land use and the air pollution that provide the bio-climate change of urban eco-system. The urban wind flow is the most important climate element on dispersion of air pollution, thermal effects and heavy shower. Numerical modeling indicates that the bio-climatic transition of wind wake in urban area and the dispersion of the air pollution by the simulations of the wind variation depend on the urban land cover change. The winds are separately simulated on small and micro-scale at Seoul with two kinds of kinetic model, Witrak and MUKLIMO.
