The evaluation of reheat cracking susceptibility in CrMoV turbine rotor steel was performed using thermally simulated heat affected zones. The examinations were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurement and a Charpy type notch opening three point bend test. It was found that reheat cracking susceptibility increased as the peak temperature increased. This effect was due to the combined effects of the carbide dissolution and unrestricted grain growth at 1350.deg. C peak temperature. Reheat cracking susceptibility was estimated based on microhardness measurement and prior austenite grain size. It was established that for this particular material, reheat cracking in coarse grained heat affected zone can be eliminated if the microhardness is below about 360DPH and the grain size is below about 30.mu.m. It is evident that reheat cracking susceptibility can be eliminated or reduced by carefully controlling the welding parameters such that a refined structure is produced in the coarse grained heat affected zone.
T-type and H-type section steels were generally used in shipbuilding and offshore plants and were produced by welding technology. These section steels were produced by handwork, and the supplying amounts can't satisfy the demand amounts of the fabrication companies. In case of fillet welding, there are some gaps in weld-joint region due to no groove preparation processing and it can occur crack initiation in the welded region. It is important to evaluate the microstructural and mechanical properties of welded zone to solve these problems. To satisfy the demand amounts of T-bar parts, automatic welding technology was introduced and several conditions as a function of welding speeds were carried out to improve the manufacturing speed. Heat-affected zone may be affected by variation of heat input and cooling rate through automatic welding speed and welding speed is necessary to be optimized. In this study, fusion zone and heat-affected zone were investigated by microstructural and mechanical analysis and were evaluated whether the welded parts were sound or not.
Electrochemical characteristics of welded stainless steels containing Ti have been studied by using the electrochemical techniques in 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$+0.01 M KSCN solutions at $25^{\circ}C$. Stainless steels with 12 mm thick-ness containing $0.2{\~}0.9 wt\%$ Ti were fabricated with vacuum melting and following rolling process. The stainless steels were solutionized for 1hr at $1050^{\circ}C$ and welded by MIG method. Samples were individually prepared with welded zone, heat affected zone, and matrix for intergranular corrosion and pitting test. Optical microscope, XRD and SEM are used for analysing microstructure, surface and corrosion morphology of the stainless steels. The welded zone of the stainless steel with lower Ti content have shown dendrite structure mixed with $\gamma$ and $\delta$ phase. The Cr-carbides were precipitated at twin and grain boundary in heat affected zone of the steel and also the matrix had the typical solutionized structure. The result of electrochemical measurements showed that the corrosion potential of welded stainless steel were Increased with higher Ti content. On the other hand, reactivation($I_r$), passivation and active current($I_a$) density were decreased with higher Ti content. In the case of lower Ti content, the corrosion attack of welded stainless steel was remarkably occurred along intergranular boundary and ${\gamma}/{\delta}$ phase boundary in heat affected zone.
This paper presents the characteristics of mechanical properties within the heat affected zones(HAZs) of dissimilar metal weld joint between SA508 Gr.1a and F3l6 stainless steel(SS) with Alloy 82/182 filler metal. Tensile tests were performed using small-size specimens taken from the heat affected regions close to both fusion lines of weld, and the micro-structures were examined using optical microscope(OM) and transmission microscope(TEM). The results showed that significant gradients of the yield stress(YS), ultimate tensile stress(UTS), and elongations were observed within the HAZ of SA508 Gr.1a. This was attributed to the different microstructures within the HAZ developed during the welding process. In the HAZ of F316 SS, however, the welding effect dominated the YS and elongation rather than UTS. TEM micrographs demonstrated these characteristics of the HAZ of F316 SS was associated with a dislocation-induced strain hardening.
The hydrogen attack characteristics of 3Cr-1Mo-V steel as simulated weld heat affected state were studied in this paper. The hydrogen attack susceptibility was evaluated by the ratios of Charpy impact absorbed energy at 0℃($vE_{0HA}$/$vE_{0}$) and reduction of area by tensile test ($RA_{HA}$/RA) before and after exposure to hydrogen at 600℃ under 450kgf/㎠ for 300hr. The values of $vE_{0HA}$/$vE_{0}$ and $RA_{HA}$/RA were aggravated as the peak temperature of the simulated heat affected zone(HAZ) raised. These results were due to the increase of the possession of bubbles along the grain boundaries, which were resulted in the reduction of grain boundary area to be precipitated carbides due to grain coarsening and the carbon dissolved in the martensite-austenite constituent near by the prior austenite grain boundary. The possession ratio of methane bubbles formed along prior austenite grain boundaries were increased with raising the peak temperature. (Received February 22, 2000)
The hydrogen attack characteristics of 3Cr-1Mo-V steel as simulated weld heat affected state were studied in this paper. The hydrogen attack susceptibility was evaluated by the ratios of Charpy impact absorbed energy at 0℃({TEX}$vE_{0} {HA}_/vE_{0}${/TEX}) and reduction of area by tensile test({TEX}$RA_{HA}/RA${/TEX}) before and after exposure to hydrogen at 600℃ under 450kgf/㎠ for 300hr. The values of {TEX}$vE_{0} {HA}_/vE_{0}${/TEX} and {TEX}$RA_{HA}/RA${/TEX} were aggravated as the peak temperature of the simulated heat affected zone(HAZ) raised.
A lot of work is carried out concerning to acicular ferrite formation in the weld metal of high strength and low-alloy steel. Those results are suggesting that oxides that contain titanium elements provides nucleation site of intragranular ferrite, referred as acicular ferrite. Thus, when intragranular ferrite is expected to form in heat-affected zone, oxide containing titanium element should be formed in the steel. However, normal steel is deoxidized by using aluminum element (Al-killed steel) with little oxygen content. It means almost oxygen is deoxidized with aluminum elements. In the present work, in order to form the acicular ferrite in the heat affected zone, with the same concept in the case of weld metal, the steel deoxidized with titanium element (titanium killed-steel) is prepared and the acicular ferrite formation is observed in detail by using laser-conforcal microscopy technique. The confocal technique makes it possible that the morphological change along the phase transformation from austenite to ferrite is in-situ tracked. Thus, the inclusion that stimulated the ferrite nucleation could be directly selected from the observed images, in the HAZ of the Ti-killed steel. The chemical composition of the selected inclusion is analyzed and the nucleation potential is discussed by changing the nucleation site with boron element. The potency for the ferrite nucleation is summarized and the existence of effective and ineffective manganese sulfide for nucleation is made clear.
Even welds that have passed non-destructive testing in the case of brittle crack arrest steel materials will actually have very fine weld defects. Based on studies showing that these defects adversely affect the structure if subjected to a certain period of load, the following conclusions were obtained by conducting CTOD tests on welding joints of high-strength BCA materials, structures comprising the upper decks of a large container vessel. First of all, the fatigue pre-cracking in the weld metal and heat affected areas was tested and the behavior was identified. Both parts of the welding joint are allowable range for the class regulations. In addition, CTOD results showed that the CTOD value in the heat affected area was more than 0.5 times higher than in the weld metal area.
This paper is mainly Intended to show an effect of foundation depth on heat of hydration in mass concrete. From the analysis, it was found that the foundation depth which is not affected by the heat conduction is more than 5 m. But this study shows that, an optimum foundation depth for the FEM analysis for heat of hydration in mass concrete is approximately 1 m from this study. And in order to study tile significance of various parameters, a sensitivity analysis of heat transfer in mass concrete is performed and the amount of heat liberated at complete hydration of unit weight of cement and the reaction velocity of hydration are the most sensitive parameters factors of other various parameters.
