The effect of ginseng components on the potassium depleted cardiomyopathic rat heart was investigated. In the perfused heart experiment using Langendorff apparatus, the deterioration rate of contriactile force of potassium depleted rat heart (low potassium diet group) was faster than that of normal rat heart and ginseng components showed the ability to slow the deterioration rate of potassium depleted hearts. Both sialic acid contents in carcolemmal ghost and sialyltransferase activity of 40,000 * g subcellular fraction prepared from cardiac ventricular tissue of low potassium diet group were significantly decreased compared to those of normal group. The decrease of the sialic acid content and sialyltransferase activity in sarcolemma of low potassium diet group was inhibited when ginseng was concomitantly administered. Calcium uptake of sarcoplasmic reticulum prepared from low potassium diet group was significantly greaterthan that of normal group. Ginseng extract or total saponin showed the tendency to inhibit the increase of cacium uptake.

The effects of $a_1$-adrenoceptor stimulation on intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ ([C $a^{2+}$]$_{i}$ ) transient, contraction, and L-type $Ca^{2＋}$ current ( $I_{Ca,L}$) were studied in single cells isolated from ventricles of guinea pig hearts. Phenylephrine, $\alpha$$_1$-adrenergic agonist, (5$\times$10$^{-5}$ ~10$^{-4}$ M) produced a biphasic pattern of inotropism： transient negative response (decrease in contraction by 23.9$\pm$2.5% of control) followed by a sustained positive response (increase in contraction by 60.0$\pm$3.4%, mean $\pm$ SD, n=12).(omitted)ted)

This study was conducted to evaluated the nature of the variety Tongil(Suweon 213-1) in resistance to the striped rice borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker, comparing with those of Rexoro(susceptible check) and TKM-6(resistant check) selected at IRRI. 1. The striped rice borer moths much more preferred the variety Tongil for oviposition than the varieties Rexoro and TKM-6. The variety Tongil and more egg masses and number of eggs than the varieties Rexoro and TKM-6, while TKM-6 having more egg masses and more number of eggs than Rexoro. This reaction was consistent throughout the test regardless of the number of tillers per hill. 2. In laboratory, preference of larvae for feeding was studied with 5cm of stem pieces of the varieties. The results showed, in contrast to the case of ovipositional preference, that the striped rice borer larvae least preferred the stems of Tongil among the test varieties, while larvae much more preferred the stems of Rexoro than those of TKM-6. 3. The larval weights at 20 days later infested on the 40 day-old plants were the lowest on Tongil among the test varieties. On the variety Rexoro the larvae had heavier body weights(43.0mg), higher pupation(64.9%) and higher adult emergence(83.3%) than those on Tongil(larval weights 30.3mg, pupation 60%, adult emergence 60.7%) and TKM-6(larval weights 35.7mg, pupation 56.3%, adult emergence 51.9%). The pupal weights, however, were not consistent among the test varieties and/or sexes in comparison with the larval weights, pupation and adult emergence above mentioned. 4. Field experiments indicated that the incidence of dead hearts at 70 days after transplanting was relatively higher on the variety Tongil(11.1%) than those on Rexoro(8.9%) and TKM-6(8.4%), and the incidence of white heads at harvest was, in contrast to the dead hearts, lower on Tongil(9.8%) than those on Rexoro(27.4%) and TKM-6(13.9%). At harvest lower larval survival observed on Tongil (49 larvae/40 hills) than those on the susceptible variety Rexoro(104 larvae/40 hills) and on the resistant variety TKM-6(70 larvae/40 hills). The average larval weights collected from three test varieties at harvest were 80.5mg from Tongil, 83.7mg from TKM-6 and 99.6mg from Rexoro. 5. Increased nitrogen fertilizer application to the variety Tongil, the striped rice borer damage was increased. Also, preference of larvae for feeding significantly increased with the increase of nitrogen fertilizer application. 6. Any specific association between the plant characters and striped rice borer resistance could not be found. The variety Tongil even having large number of tillers, short plant height, large stem, broad leaf, etc, had still high preference of moths for oviposition, low preference of larvae for feeding, low damage, and relatively high antibiosis. 7. Resistance of the variety Tongil to the striped rice borers seemed to be associated with the low feeding preference and the relatively high antibiosis, not associated directly with the ovipositional preference.

Maltol(2-methyl-3-hydroxy-r-pyrone), a component known to be present in Korean Ginseng root showed an antioxidant action but its potency as an antioxidant was low; about 1150th that of other antioxidants such as p-phenylenediamine , BHA and BHT. However, maltol was able to protect the oxidation adamants in biological systems such as adriamycin-induced membrane damage in isolated cardiomyocytes, parquet-induced toxicities in isolated hepatocytes and repercussion injury in isolated hearts. The antioxidant action of maltol was also shown to be effective in vivo. The antioxidant action of this compound was probably due to the removal of hydroxyl radicals. In view of the roles of oxygen radical in various pathological processes, Korean Ginseng root, which contains several antioxidants including maltol, is expected to have beneficial efforts on the oxygen radical-involved processes. 생후 30일 된 형성부전성 좌심증후군 환자에 대하여 무명 동맥과 관상동맥의 국소 순환 하에 완전순환 정지 없이 심박동을 유지한 상태에서 Norwood수술을 시행하였다. 환자는 4개월 후 이차 수술전까지 특별한 문제없이 성장하였고 이차 수술 후 폰탄 수술을 기다리고 있다. 상행 대동맥 근위부 직경이 5 mm 이상 정도로 캐뉼라 삽관이 가능한 경우 완전 순환 정지 없이 Norwood 술식이 가능하며 이를 통하여 좋은 결과를 얻었기에 보고하는 바이다.

The clinical, investigative, and surgical experiences were reviewed in four patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries who presented to the National Medical Center between August 1983 and August 1985. This condition is very rare congenital anomaly defined as the combination of atrioventricular discordance and transposition of the great arteries. Examples of primitive [single] ventricle inverted [that is, left sided in situs solitus] with outflow chamber were excluded in this paper. According to the sequential arrangement of the hearts there were two cases of [S,L,L] and two cases of [I,D,D]. The surgical approach should be focused on minimizing the risk of heart block and increasing the degree of relief of pulmonary outflow tract obstruction [POTO]. We experienced complete heart block in two cases of [S,L,L] and significant residual POTO in one case of [S,L,L] and one case of [I,D,D] postoperatively. There were one hospital mortality caused by complete heart block and residual POTO and two delayed mortalities caused by congestive heart failure and sepsis respectively.

Maltol(2-methyl-3-hydroxy-r-pyrone), a component known to be present in Korean Ginseng root showed an antioxidant action but its potency as an antioxidant was low: about 1150th that of other antioxidants such as pphenylenediamine, BHA and BHT. However, maltol was able to protect the oxidation damages in biological systems such as adriamycin-induced membrane damage in isolated cardiomyocytes, paraquat-induced toxicities in isolated hepatocytes and reperfusion injury in isolated hearts. The antioxidant action of maltol was also shown to be effective in vivo. The antioxidant action of this compound was probably due to the removal of hydroxyl radicals. In view of the roles of oxygen radical in various pathological proceises, Korean Ginseng root which contains several antioxidants including maltol is expected to have beneficial effects on the oxygen radical-involved processes.

The history of architectural acoustics is a part of history of human being getting together for both politics and entertainments, is also a part of the history of nobility pursuing hearing enjoyments, is still a part history of scientists deeply understanding the concept of "just for people", and as well as is a part history ceaselessly driven by the musicians to find their real hearts through music. The history of architectural acoustics explains not only the acoustic knowledge developments in architectural design, but also the unity on contradictory of both the science and the arts, both the technology and the culture, both the sense and sense organ. The history of architectural acoustics prints the interactions between the mankind and the nature, between the mankind and themselves, between the mankind and their souls, in which course people understand their feelings more deeply and deeply. This paper discusses the brief history of architectural acoustic in China from the ancient drama stages to grand theaters in 20 century, even up to nowadays, including some most important buildings and events as well.

This study regarded irregular life styles such as nigh-shifts as contrary to the norm advised in the rules of Yang-saeng to analyze the problems brought about in relation to the concept of 'Yin-deficiency syndrome'. Yin-deficiency survey was given to sales workers on a big shopping mall in Seoul to compare the measurements of daytime workers to those of nigh-shift workers. The measurement of complaining symptoms related to Yin-deficiency of daytime workers and night-shift workers were compared, In comparison of the daytime workers and the night-shift workers, night-shift workers showed higher measurements than the daytime workers in the item of irritable fever on the five Hearts, flushing of the zygomatic region in the afternoon, tidal fever, dizziness, insomnia, yellow and scanty urination, and constipation. Especially tidal fever, insomnia, and constipation showed statistically significant difference. The total of ten items consisting of Yin-deficiency-related symptoms showed statistically significant high score in night-shift workers than the daytime workers. 'Factors for deficiency-type Heat' consisting of irritable fever on the five Hearts, flushing of the zygomatic region in the afternoon, tidal fever, and dried mouth and throat showed statistically significant high score in night-shift workers than the daytime workers. 'Accompanying factors' consisting of night sweats, emaciation, dizziness, insomnia, yellowish and scanty urination, and constipation also showed statistically and significantly high score in night-shift workers than the daytime workers. From the above results that night-shift workers show high degree of Yin-deficiency than daytime workers, and those overworking irregularly also show high degree of Yin-deficiency than those who work for adequate amount of time regularly implies that sitting up at night for work and sleeping at daytime, excessive work, and irregular life styles all function as high-risk factor for Yin-deficiency.

Background: Adhesion of leukocytes to myocardium or vascular endothelium has been known as an importation initial step in the ischemia-reperfusion injury which may affect the cardiac function. Therefore, leukocyte-depleted reperfusion may inhibit ischemia-reperfusion induced functional and ultrastructural deterioration. In this study, we quantified the time-dependent expression of the vascular cell adhesion molecule-1(VCMA-1) on piglet myocardium and demonstrated its relation to functional recovery using isolated piglet heart perfusion model. Material and Method: Neonatal(1 to 3 day old) piglet heart was harvested with 4$^{\circ}C$ University of Wisconsin solution (UWS) and presrved in the same solution for 12 hours. Ex vivo model of an isolated working neonatal piglet heart perfusion consisting of membrane oxygenator and roller-pump was used (Fig. 1). Hearts were grouped into leukocyte-non-depleted (group A, n=8) and leukocyte-depleted group(group B, n=8). In group B, hearts were reperfused with leukocyte-depleted blood using a leukocyte filter (Sepacell R, Asahi Medical, Japan). Segments of right atrium were taken before and after 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours of reperfusion for the evaluation of expression of VCAM-1. The intensity of immunohistochyemical satining of the VCAM-1 on the myocardium were graded semiquantitatively (0 to 4). For the evaluation of myocardial stroke work indices were calculated as well at the same time-points. Result: Mean expressins of VCAM-1 on the myocardium at 0, 1, 2, 3, adn 4 hours of reperfusion were 0.63, 1.44, 1.64, 2.65, and 3.34 in group A, while 0.56, 1.40, 1.50, 1.88 and 2.14 in group B (Fig. 3). Mean stroke work indices at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours after reperfusion were 1.35$\times$104, 1.32$\times$104, 1.14$\times$104, 0.81$\times$104, 0.68$\times$104 erg/gm in group A, while 1.40$\times$104, 1.43$\times$104, 1.43$\times$104, 1.28$\times$104, and 1.12$\times$104 erg/em in group B(Fig. 4). Conclusion : In this study, we demonstrated that leukocyte-depletion attenuated the expression of VCAM-1 during reperfusion and the time-dependent functional deterioration of the myocardium was well correlated with the degree of VCAM-1 expression.
