  • Two human cases of Heterophyes heterophyes nocens infection were proved by identifying adult worms after treatment with bithionol or praziquantel in 1983 in Korea. They are 37 (Case 1) and 24-year old (Case 2) males whose resi¬dence or native village is a southern coastal area in Kohiing-gun, Chollanam-do. The Case 1 had the gastrointestinal symptoms such as epigastric pain and indigestion, and the Case 2 heart problems such as arrhythmia and ventricular premature beat in EKG and digestive symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. After the treatments, 35 and 67 specimens of H. hetero¬phyes nocens respectively were collected from the diarrheal stools through stereomicroscopy. The Case 1 was concommitantly infected with Clonorchis sinensis and the Case 2 with 3 other kinds of heterophyid flukes and with Diphyllo¬bothrium latum. The cases said to have eaten raw brackish water fish such as mullets (Mugil cephalus), perches (Lateolabrax japonicus) and gobies (Acanthogobius flavimanus) which are the intermediate hosts of H. heterophyes nocens in Korea.

  • BOLD T2*-weighted MR images reflects cortical blood flow and oxygenation alterations. fMRI study relies on the detection of localized changes in BOLD signal intensity. Since fMRI measures the very small modulations in BOLD signal intensity that occur during changes in brain activity, it is also very sensitive to small signal intensity variations caused by physiologic noise during the scan. Due to the complexity of movement of various organs associated with heart beat, it is important to reduce cardiac related noise rather than other physiological noise which could be required with relatively simple method. Therefore, a number of methods have been developed for the estimation and reduction of cardiac noise in fMRI study. But, each method has limitation. In this study, we proposed a new estimation method for brain activities influenced by blood pulsation effect using regression analysis with blood pulsation signal and the correspond slice of fMRI. We could find out that the right anterior cingulate cortex and right olfactory cortex and left olfactory cortex were largely influenced by blood pulsation effect for new method. These observed areas are mostly on the structure of anterior cerebral artery in the brain. That is convinced with that our method would be valid and our new method is easier to apply in practice and reduce computational burden than the retrospective method.

  • In this paper, we have implemented a ubiquitous healthcare system that can measure and check human's health in anytime and anywhere. The implemented prototype are composed of both front-end and back-end. The front-end have several groups: environment sensor group such as temperature, humidity, photo, voice sensor, health sensor group such as blood pressure, heart beat, electrocardiogram, spo2 sensor, gateway for wired/wireless communication, and RFID reader to identify personal. The back-end has a serial forwarder to propagate measurment results, monitor program, and medical information server The implemented sensor node constructs a sensor network using the Zigbee protocol and is ported the tinyOS. The data gathering base node is linux-based terminal that can transfer a sensed medial data through wireless LAN. And, the medical information server stores the processed medical data and can promptly notify the urgent status to the connected medical team. Through our experiments, we've confirmed the possibility of ubiquitous healthcare system based on sensor network using the Zigbee.

  • Diaphragmatic hernias, whether congenital or acquired (traumatic), are rarely observed in the horse. Acquired diaphragmatic hernias typically occur secondary to trauma or an increase in intraabdominal pressure due to falling, heavy exercise, or parturition. Diaphragmatic herniorrhaphy is difficult to perform in adult horses and the horses with symptomatic diaphragmatic hernias usually die. A 10- year old, 340 kg, Jeju horse (crossbred) broodmare with sudden onset of gait disorder and a moderate emaciation was examined. Findings on physical examination included conjunctivitis, dehydration, shallow breathing, dyspnea, weaken heart beat, lack of auscultatable sounds from the gastrointestinal tract, and anorexia. Rectal temperature was $38.4^{\circ}C$ and respiratory rates were moderately increased. There were slight signs of acute colic. The broodmare died one day after non-specific treatment of fluids, nutriment, antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The cause of death was strangulation of the small intestine through a diaphragmatic hernia. The rent was about 2 cm in diameter and located in the central right part of diaphragm. Around 60 cm of small intestine was protruded into thoracic cavity through the rent. The cause of the hernia could not be ascertained. The broodmare had been pastured with many other horses, and the groom had not noticed any aggressive behavior among them. It was, however, speculated that trauma by stallion's attack may have been the cause of the diaphragmatic hernia, because the new horse may be the object of behaviors ranging from mild threats to seriously aggressive kicking, squealing, rearing, and biting.

  • Acepromazine maleate(sedaject) was injected to 3 and 5 thoroughbred racehorses at 0.2mg/kg/bw, intramurculary(IM) and 0.1mg/kg/bw, intravenously(IV) respectively, and investigated the changes of clinical signs and blood pictures In before and after injection. Sedation was induced within 15 minutes after injection at the two groups and general sedation with towering of the upper eyelids and penile protrusion lasted about 7~9 hours and 9~11 hours at IV group and IM group following injection respectively. Heart beat and respiratory rates were induced within 15 minutes and then slowly returned to preinjection levels at 3 and 7 hours in the two group following injection respectively. Body temperature was decreased within IS minutes and the effect was Peaked after 30 minutes and 3 hours in IV group and IM group respectively, and then slowly returned to preinjection levels. RBC parameters, Hb and PCV were decreased about 30% at 1~5 hours and then returned to preinjection values at 13~24 hours in two groups Total WBC number were decreased slightly within 30 minutes and then returned to preinjection level at 13~24 hours in IV group but being still decreased 24 hours after dosing in IM group serum glucose level, SGOT and ALP activity were not changed significantly. Generally the set of sedation and awakening signs were faster in IV group than in IM group and RBC parameters and total WBC were depressed markedly in IM group than in IV group.

  • Analyzing the characteristics of blood flow in the blood vessels is very important to diagnose the circulatory diseases. In order to investigate the hemodynamic characteristics in vivo, the measurements of blood flows inside the extraembryonic arterial and venous blood vessels of chicken embryos were carried out using an in vivo micro-PIV technique. The circulatory diseases are closely related with the formation of abnormal hemodynamic shear stress regions, thereby it is important to get blood velocity and vessel's morphological information according to the vessel configuration and the flow conditions. In this study, the flow images of RBCs in blood vessels were obtained using a high-speed CMOS camera with a spatial resolution of approximately 14.6${\mu}$m${\times}$14.6${\mu}$m in the whole circulation network of blood vessels. The blood flows in the veins and arteries show steady laminar and unsteady pulsatile flow characteristics, respectively. The mean blood flows merged (in veins) and bifurcated (in arteries) smoothly into the main blood vessel and branches, respectively, without any flow separation or secondary flow which accompanying large variation of shear stress. Vorticity was high in the inner regions for both types of vessels, where the radius of curvature varied greatly. The instantaneous flows in the arterial blood vessels showed noticeable pulsatility due to the heart beat, and the main features of the velocity waveforms, including pulsatile shape, retrograde flow, mean velocity, maximum velocity and pulsatile frequency, were significantly dependent on the pulsatile condition which dominates the arterial blood flow. In near future, these in vivo experimental results of blood flow measured in various extraembryonic blood vessels would be very useful to understand the hemodynamic characteristics of human blood flows and various blood flow researches for clinically useful hemodynamic discoveries as well.

  • In order to study the effects of Guibitanggamibang on blood pressure and hyperlipidemia, experimental study were performed on hypertension in normal and SHR rats, and on hyperlipidemia induced by Triton WR-1339 in normal rats. Also the level of total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, phospholipid and transaminase(GOT, GPT) were measured. The results are summarized as follows: 1. After Guibitanggamibang was given to normal rats, the results showed that inhibitory effects on blood pressure and heart beat were not statistically significant. 2. After Guibitanggamibang was given to SHR rats, the results showed that inhibitory effects on blood pressure were statistically significant. 3. In the model of hyperlipidemia induced by 2% cholesterol food, Guibitanggarrubang had significantly-decreasing effects on total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-choleste rol, Transaminase(GOT, GPT) level in serum. 4. In the model of hyperlipidemia induced by Triton WR-1339, Guibitanggamibang had significantly-decreasing effects on total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, phospholipid, Transaminase(GOT, GPT) level in serum. 5. In the model of hyperlipidemia induced by Triton WR-1339, Guibitanggamibang had no significant effects on HDL-cholesterol level in serum. These results show that Guibitanggamibang(歸脾湯加味方) has significant inhibitory effects on blood pressure and hyperlipidemia and that it could be clinically applied for hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

  • This paper investigates a low cost dual modular redundancy system based on heartbeat which can be applied to traffic control signal system. Failure of the traffic control signal system can cause traffic confusion and traffic accidents. Therefore safety and reliability of traffic control should be secured using fault tolerance technology. To do this, we configured a redundant board using the open source hardware and the heartbeat technique of Linux HA. The function of the traffic signal control system was verified and the fault recovery time was measured using fault injection test. As a result of the test, the fault recovery time was confirmed to be less than 9 seconds on average, confirming that the reliability target time is satisfied. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that it can be applied to fields requiring high reliability systems such as aviation, space, and nuclear power embedded systems.

  • In this study. respiratory efforts were monitored by the change of pulse transit time (PTT) which is related with the arterial pressure PTT is the time interval between the peak of R wave in ECG and the maximal slope point of photoplethysmogram(PPG). Biosignals, ECG and finger photoplethysmogram(PPG), were converted to digital data, and PTT was evaluated in personal computer with every heart beat. Results were presented as a graph using spline interpolation. The software was implemented in C$\^$++/ as a window-based application program. PTT was periodically changed according to airflow in resting respiration. In the resting respiration, PTT was changed according to the respiratory cycle. The amplitude of PTT fluctuation was increased by deep respiration, and increased by partial airway obstruction. These results suggest that PTT is responsible to respiratory effort which could be evaluated by the pattern of PTT change. And it is expected that PTT could be applied in the monitoring of respiratory effort by noninvasive methods, and is very useful method for the evaluation of respiratory distress.
