  • This study identities various types of subjective perception of hearing-impaired persons on sign language interpretation using Q-methodology in an attempt to explore ways for developing more useful sign language interpretation services for them. For this purpose, 35 statements are extracted based on literatures and in-depth interviews and Q-classification is conducted for 20 interviewees. The results identify a common perception on the provision of sign language interpreter to frequently used institutions of hearing-impaired persons. They also derive three distinguished types of perception: seeking specialization of sign language interpretation, seeking traditional sign language interpretation services and seeking expansion and improvement of sign language interpretation services. Based on the results, the study suggests residence of sign language interpreters in public facilities, improvements of qualification system and education and training courses, specialization by field and improvement of the practice of sign language interpretation services, provision of customized services to the elderly and use of sign language interpreters reflecting the needs of the users.

  • In public facilities, the hearing impaired people do not receive voice notifications, so they use dedicated applications for the facility as a means of obtaining information. However, there is the inconvenience of using dedicated applications for each facility. In this paper, we propose a subscription service for the hearing impaired people. The proposed method uses the MQTT protocol to design the notification service, and subscribes to the notification service by scanning the QR code through the application. The hearing-impaired people who subscribes to the notification service receives a message when the notification information is posted.

  • One of the important parts on multimedia era is acoustic ones. With increased demand of smallest multimedia products such as personal digital assistant (PDA) and mobile phones, it is necessary to develop acoustic devices which have higher performance and smaller size. Acoustic parts with various function for hearing impaired persons. This paper introduces a bone conduction vibrator (BCV) for hearing impaired persons to use portable acoustic device without additional devices. For vibration analysis of the BCV, electromagnetic, mechanical and their coupling effects are considered for the analysis. This paper shows that the development of design and analysis technique by finite element method (FEM) of BCV.

  • Many persons, both children and adults, suffer from impaired hearing. The handicaps that arise from this are economic, educational and above all, social. These persons need help, both medical and educational. In order to plan facilities for the medical treat ment, the rehabilitation, and the special education required by those with impaired hearing, we must know how many persons with hearing problems there are and the severity of their handicaps. The first step in knowing these is to devide hearing impairent into categories of handicap. Historically, since Beasley (1940) proposed progressive stages of deafness in terms of social disability, there was no well organized classification. of hearing handicap except related material from Huzing (1959) and Silverman (1960). In 1965, Goodman advocated a guide hearing threshold levels and degres of relating hearing impairment. During recent one year, on the bases of Goodman classification of hearing impairment and the report from Illinois Comission on children (1968), we have studied about hearing handicaps and speech life for the 180 cases, who visited to our otolaryngology department with hearing impairment. Now, we report the results of study with the referred references.

  • Despite the effort for affording hearing handicapped persons facility for living, the investigation of assistive devices which recognize the out of sight circumstance has been studied insignificantly. In this paper, a novel acoustic-aware system is suggested to forward the sudden noise occured by the appearance of a new context to a hearing-impaired persons.

  • DSP chip parameters of a digital hearing aid (HA) should be optimally selected or fitted for hearing impaired persons. The more precise parameter fitting guarantees the better compensation of the hearing loss (HL). Digital HAs adopt DSP chips for more precise fitting of various HL threshold curve patterns. A specific DSP chip such as Gennum GB3211 was designed and manufactured in order to match up to about 4.7 billion different possible HL cases with combination of 7 limited parameters. This paper deals with a digital HA fitting program which is developed for optimal fitting of GB3211 DSP chip parameters. The fitting program has completed features from audiogram input to DSP chip interface. The compensation effects of the microphone and the receiver are also included. The paper shows some application examples.

  • Welfare centers for disabled person which are typical facilities in Korea are classified into two catagories One is general welfare center for all type of disabled persons and the other is special welfare centers for special disabilities such as visually handicapped persons, hearing-impaired persons and the physically disabled. In this study the movements of disabled persons in daily lifes were measured and many evacuation drills in welfare centers were conducted for the achievement of basic data such as velocities and evacuation patterns of disabled persons The evacuation patterns are characterized by different kinds of disabilities.

  • The objective of this study is to understand the influence of discrimination experience on life satisfaction of the employed hearing-impaired, and also to verify the mediating effects of self-esteem on relations between discrimination experience and life satisfaction. To achieve this objective, the data of the 8th Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled was used, and then the extracted data of 234 employed hearing-impaired persons was used for analysis. The results of this study are like below. First, discrimination experience showed negative(-) relations with self-esteem and life satisfaction while self-esteem showed positive(+) relations with life satisfaction. Second, when the perception of discrimination experience was low, the life satisfaction was high. Third, the mediating effects of self-esteem were verified on relations between discrimination experience and life satisfaction. Marital status, health, social-economical position has effected on life satisfaction. Based on such results of the study, suggestions were made to increase life satisfaction of the hearing-impaired.
