Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the effect of inbalance of autonomic nerve system on peripheral facial palsy patients in comparison of Heart Rate Variability results of healthy control group with that of peripheral facial palsy group. Methods : The peripheral facial palsy patiens who visited the Dongguk university Bundang oriental medicine hospital from April to June in 2005 were tested Heart Rate Variability items which are Mean Heart Rate(MHRT), Standard Deviation of all the Normal RR intervals (SDNN), Root Mean Square of Successive Differences Between The Normal Heart Beats(RMSSD), Total Power(TP), Low Frequency, High Frequency, ratio between the Low Frequency and High Frequency power(LF/HF ratio). The Heart Rate Variability test results of peripheral facial palsy group were compared with the HRV test results of healthy control group who didn't have nervous disease, musculoskeletal disease, heart problem and pain for the past 6 months. Results : 1. MHRT was not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=0.18). 2. SDNN was not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=0.41). 3. RMSSD was not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=0.93). 4. TP was not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=094). 5. LF and HF were not significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group((P=0.34, 0.30). 6. LF/HF ratio was significantly different between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group(P=0.04). Conclusion : LF/HF ratio is generally used as autonomic nerve system evaluation and there was significantly statistical difference between peripheral facial palsy group and healthy control group.
The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is directed to arresting the progression of the disease, and regenerating the fibrous attachment. In order to achieve such treatment aim, the plaque and calculus must be eliminated and the physiological conditions of the root surface must be changed to facilitate the attachment and migration of the new fibroblasts, The method of changing the proper root surface conditions to promote the healing of periodontal tissue involves mechanical procedures, such as scaling and root planing, and chemical procedures such as tetracycline-HCl. However, the formation of a long junctional epithelium was most frequently observed type of healing. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine in vitro the influence of surface conditioning of dentin by TC-HCl on human gingival epithelial cell attachment. Human gingival epithelial cells were obtained from healthy retromolar pad area(under the age 23 years). Seventy two teeth extracted from severe periodontitis were used as study material. To evaluate the epithelial cell attachment to dentin, the prepared specimen was divided to four groups. For the control group, only scaling and root planing were carried out, and for the test group, 1 to 3, the concentration of the TC-HCl was 50, 125 and 250mg/ml respectively. After cell cultivation time of 1-, 3-. 24 hour, for the indirect quantitative assessment of gingival epithelial cell attached to dentin sample, the absorbance of epithelial cell unattached to dentin was measured. The results were as follows; 1. There was no statistically significant difference between scaling and root planing group and TC-HCl 50mg/ml 125mg/ml and 250mg/ml group about absorbance of unattached epithelial cell to dentin sample(p>0.5). 2. As time passes, the absorbance of unattached gingival epithelial cell to dentin sample was decreased statistically significant(p<0.05). 3. There was no statistically significant difference among the TC-HCl group(p>0.05) We concluded that there was similar effect on gingival epithelial cell attachment between TC-HCl conditioning on root surface and only scaling and root planing treatment

Field experiments were conducted to investigate the yield and paeoniflorin content between healthy peony and blight plot of top part with every year during 3 years at June, July, August, September, separately. Stem length and diameter, No. of stem in the blight plot of peony were decreased in early in blight time compared with those in no blight growth. No. of flower buds per plant was 5.2, 4.6 in 3 year- grown and 4year-grown plots at late June blight compared with 11.5, 16.2 in no blight. No. of axillary flower was also similar to as above. Main root length and root diameter was most decreased in the plot of late June blight compared with healthy peony. No. of root more than 10mm of root diameter was small in order of blight time, namely Late June, July, August and September. The root dry yield of 4 year healthy peony was most high in 1,603kg per 10a, but it was lowed in 1,007kg in the plot lasted blight during 3years at late June. Paeoniflorin content was no different between 3year-grown and 4year-grown, but it was high in late June blight plot increased with the early in blight time.
Background: Rhizobacteria play an important role in plant defense and could be promising sources of biocontrol agents. This study aimed to screen antagonistic bacteria and develop a biocontrol system for root rot complex of Panax notoginseng. Methods: Pure-culture methods were used to isolate bacteria from the rhizosphere soil of notoginseng plants. The identification of isolates was based on the analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequences. Results: A total of 279 bacteria were obtained from rhizosphere soils of healthy and root-rot notoginseng plants, and uncultivated soil. Among all the isolates, 88 showed antagonistic activity to at least one of three phytopathogenic fungi, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, and Phoma herbarum mainly causing root rot disease of P. notoginseng. Based on the 16S rRNA sequencing, the antagonistic bacteria were characterized into four clusters, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetesi. The genus Bacillus was the most frequently isolated, and Bacillus siamensis (Hs02), Bacillus atrophaeus (Hs09) showed strong antagonistic activity to the three pathogens. The distribution pattern differed in soil types, genera Achromobacter, Acidovorax, Brevibacterium, Brevundimonas, Flavimonas, and Streptomyces were only found in rhizosphere of healthy plants, while Delftia, Leclercia, Brevibacillus, Microbacterium, Pantoea, Rhizobium, and Stenotrophomonas only exist in soil of diseased plant, and Acinetobacter only exist in uncultivated soil. Conclusion: The results suggest that diverse bacteria exist in the P. notoginseng rhizosphere soil, with differences in community in the same field, and antagonistic isolates may be good potential biological control agent for the notoginseng root-rot diseases caused by F. oxysporum, Fusarium solani, and Panax herbarum.
This study was conducted to determine the optimum intensity of root pruning and the initial seedling size of 1-year-old Quercus serrata for producing 2-year-old healthy seedlings. Large( > 26 cm hight) and small size ( < 24 cm hight) seedlings were pruned their root by the length of 5, 10, and 15cm and then transplanted on nursery. Stem height, root-collar diameter(RCD), height to RCD ratio(H/D ratio), shoot dry weight(DW) and root development were measured during first growing season after transplanting. Seedling size and pruning intensity influenced on shoot growth such as height, RCD, H/D ratio and DW after transplanting. In addition, the development of lateral roots such as number, length, DW and diameter were affected by the seedling size. Taproot pruned by 15cm was shown excellent above-ground growth in large seedling group, but pruned by 10 and 15cm showed respectively better shoot growth in small seedling group. Large seedlings increased their above-ground growth, taproot regrowth, and number of lateral roots more than those of the small seedlings. But the length and DW of lateral roots were increased in the small seedlings. In conclusion, in order to produce high quality 2-year-old seedlings, it is important to produce large size of Q. serrata seedlings. Also root pruning length of 1-year-old Q. serrata was reasonable on 15 cm in taller than 26 cm or 10cm in less than the height.

Ginseng is an important medicinal plant cultivated in East Asia for thousands of years. It is typically cultivated in the same field for 4 to 6 years and is exposed to a variety of pathogens. Among them, ginseng root rot is the main reason that leads to the most severe losses. In this study, endophytic bacteria were isolated from healthy ginseng, and endophytes with antagonistic effect against ginseng root rot pathogens were screened out. Among the 17 strains, three carried antagonistic effect, and were resistant to radicicol that is a mycotoxin produced by ginseng root rot pathogens. Finally, Bacillus velezensis CH-15 was selected due to excellent antagonistic effect and radicicol resistance. When CH-15 was inoculated on ginseng root, it not only inhibited the mycelial growth of the pathogen, but also inhibited the progression of disease. CH-15 also carried biosynthetic genes for bacillomycin D, iturin A, bacilysin, and surfactin. In addition, CH-15 culture filtrate significantly inhibited the growth and conidial germination of pathogens. This study shows that endophytic bacterium CH-15 had antagonistic effect on ginseng root rot pathogens and inhibited the progression of ginseng root rot. We expected that this strain can be a microbial agent to suppress ginseng root rot.

Purpose: This study compared the total antioxidant status (TAS) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the saliva of periodontally compromised patients before and after scaling and root planing (SRP) to assess their diagnostic utility. Methods: Severe chronic periodontitis patient (test group) and subjects with no attachment loss, sites showing a 3 mm or more probing depth and a sulcus bleeding index < 10% (control group) were enrolled in this study. Saliva sampling and clinical examination were performed at one week, one month and 3 months after SRP. The TAS and SOD activity in each patient's saliva was measured for the comparative analysis between the groups. Results: In the test group, the TAS decreased directly after SRP. With time, it increased slightly and was relatively unchanged compared to the baseline. In the control group, the TAS also decreased immediately after SRP but increased gradually with time until 3 months. The SOD activity in the test and control subjects decreased immediately after SRP until 1 month. At 3 months, the SOD activity had increased. Both groups had a similar profile of SOD activity. However, the SOD activity of the control group was significantly higher than that of the test group at each point in time (P < 0.05). Conclusions: There was a significant difference in the total salivary antioxidant level between the periodontitis and healthy or gingivitis (control) group during the experiment period. The total antioxidant level in the saliva was higher in the patients with severe chronic periodontitis than the healthy or gingivitis control before SRP. The SOD activity of the periodontitis patients was lower than the control at each time point. These findings conclusively reveal the possible use of saliva as a diagnostic tool for periodontal health.

This article is for understanding relations between the classifications of gastritis and syndrome differentiation types of Korean Medicine through research on syndrome differentiations of clinically applied gastritis and literature of Korean Medicine. Clinical papers were searched in China Academic Journals(CAJ) of China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) from 1995 to 2015. Conclusions are as follows. First, disease mechanism of chronic gastritis are qi stagnation, damp stagnation, heat obstruction, blood stasis obstruction, yin damage, damage to collaterals with healthy qi deficiency and pathogenic qi. And qi movement stagnation is shown through the status of chronic gastritis. Second, chronic superficial gastritis belongs to qi aspect syndrome and mainly pathogen excess syndrome. And the key mechanisms are congestion and disharmony of stomach qi sometimes combined with liver depression, food accumulation and dampness-heat. Third, chronic atrophic gastritis belongs to qi-blood syndrome and deficiency-excess complex syndrome with the root of spleen qi deficiency and stomach yin deficiency and the tip of blood stasis, qi stagnation. And key mechanism is damage to collaterals with healthy qi deficiency and toxin-blood stasis. Forth, pathogen excess syndromes are shown at the early stage of chronic gastritis and healthy qi deficiency syndromes after the middle stage. Qi deficiency is shown at the beginning of the disease and yin deficiency at the late stage. And qi deficiency is related with superficial gastritis and yin deficiency with atrophic gastritis.
The present study was conducted to establish the suppression condition of lateral root development for producing high-quality peanut sprouts. The result of Chamsiru or 6BA treatment on peanut sprouts 'Jopyeong' and 'Vietnam' showed that the higher concentration of the solutions showed the better effect for suppressing lateral root development, regardless of the kinds of lateral root inhibitor. Compared to Chamsiru, 6BA showed better effect for suppressing lateral root development, and the effect was more obvious for 'Jopyeong' than 'Vietnam'. The alternant irrigation of Chamsiru and 6BA solution could produce high-quality peanut sprouts by inhibiting bacteria activity in solution and promoting of hypocotyl and root growth, while suppressing the lateral root development. The treatment of mixture solution of $GA_3$ and Chamsiru improved the overall growth of peanut sprouts, and the effect was the highest in the treatment of '$GA_3\;50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ + Chamsiru $8.40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$'.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the clinical anatomy of lower premolar roots in a Spanish population by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), correlating findings with patient gender and tooth type. Materials and Methods: Using 70 CBCT images, we evaluated 126 healthy, untreated, well-developed lower premolars. The number and morphology of roots and root canals, and the foramina number were assessed. Results for gender and tooth type were compared using the chi-squared and ANOVA tests. Results: The average length of teeth and roots was significantly higher in men (p=0.00). All 126 premolars had a single root. One canal was found in 83.3% of the premolars, with no gender or tooth type differences; Vertucci configuration types I and V were the most prevalent. The first premolars showed significantly greater variability than the second premolars (p=0.03). A single apical foramen was found in 89.7% of the premolars, with no differences by tooth type. Women had a significantly higher prevalence of two apical foramina than men (p=0.04). Some degree of curvature was observed in 65% of the premolars, with no differences by gender or tooth type. A root angle of more than $20^{\circ}$ was found in 12.98% of the premolars, without any differences by gender or tooth. Conclusion: All premolars were single-rooted. One canal had the most prevalent morphology. More variability in canal anatomy was found in the first premolars. Curvatures greater than $20^{\circ}$ were found at less than 5 mm from the apex.
