High School Girls' Interest in Beauty and Its Association to Eating Behaviors and Dietary Quality during the COVID-19 Pandemic (코로나-19 확산 시기 여고생의 외모 관심도와 식행동 및 식사의 질과의 관련성)

  • This study assessed the beauty care behavior and the dietary attitudes, eating behaviors, and dietary quality related to beauty care in accordance with the level of interest in beauty care by examining 558 female high school subjects in the Incheon area. The study aimed to identify the interest in beauty care on the part of adolescent girls that impacts their dietary life and provide basic data for nutrition education forming desirable dietary habits. The interest in beauty care on the part of female high school students is relevant to dietary life and dietary attitude, with the high-level interest group attempting to use diet foods more frequently and attempting weight control because of their low satisfaction with their body type. On the other hand, a high level of interest in appearance failed to lead to the practice of a varied and balanced dietary life. Therefore, nutritional education is necessary to avoid a high level of interest in beauty care, leading to an incorrect perception of body shape and excessive weight control. Furthermore, nutrition education is necessary to link interest in appearance to the beauty of a healthy body based on nutritional balance by connecting the interest in appearance to a varied and balanced dietary life that goes beyond the category of practice.

Risk Factors for Troubled Skin Focused on Eating Habits and Food Preferences of College Women (여대생의 식습관과 식품기호도를 중심으로 한 문제성 피부의 위험요인)

  • This study was undertaken to find out how much influence eating habits and food preferences have on basic skin types, namely dry skin, normal skin, oily skin, and combination skin, as well as troubled skin, such as acne skin, sensitive skin, pigment disorder skin and unbalanced oil and moisture skin. The aim of this study was to help establish good eating habits and to reform food preferences in order to maintain healthy skin. For this study, a suey on the eating habits and food preferences of 206 college women in the metropolitan area was conducted. Statistics Program SPSS (ver130.0) was used to analyze the results of the material obtained from the survey. The survey revealed that participants with basic skin types ate a variety of foods, enjoy soft drinks, juice and supplementary food, while those with troubled skin types had daily breakfast and substitute snacks for meals. The survey also showed that alcohol is the dangerous factor for the cause of both sensitive skin and pigment disorder skin. And it showed that various nutrition intake is the main factor for unbalanced oil and moisture skin.

Functional cosmetic properties and antimicrobial activity of extracts from Saururus chinensis by elicitor treatment (Elicitor 처리에 의한 삼백초 추출물(Saururus chinensis)의 미용식품활성 및 피부상재균 억제효과)

  • In this study, the functional cosmetic activity of water and ethanol extracts from Saururus chinensis by elicitor treatment are examined. Anti-oxidative activity 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and antioxidant protection factor of elicitor treated S. chinensis extract increased in concentration dependent manner as concentration increased from 1.5 mg elicitor/leaf 1 g (group A) to 3.0 mg elicitor/leaf 1 g (group B). Also, 70% ethanol extract showed higher anti-oxidative activity than water extract. Elicitor treated S. chinensis extract showed similar inhibitory effect on elastase activity and whitening effect indicating low effect of elicitor on elastase inhibition and whitening effect. However, it showed high anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity compared to control group. Both group A and B showed high anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity then control group indicating that elicitor treatment is suitable for biomass method used for industrializing useful compounds. Therefore, elicitor treatment during S. chinensis cultivation will increase bioactivity in the plant source which will yield high quality for industrialization.

Functional properties of newly bred Picnic apple (Malus pumila Mill.) (신육성 품종인 피크닉 (Picnic; Malus pumila Mill.) 사과의 기능성)

  • The newly bred Picnic apple was extracted using water and ethanol for extracting solvent. Each water and ethanol extract showed relatively high phenolic compound of 3.69 and 5.55 mg/g. Each water and ethanol extract of Picnic apple showed 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl of 88.10 and 88.07%, 2,2'-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) of 98.79 and 97.25%, antioxidant protection factor of 2.07 and 2.00 PF and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances showed anti-oxidation effect of 9.69 and 19.83% all at $100{\mu}g/mL$ phenolics concentration. Therefore extract of Picnic apple can be considered as anti-oxidant for anti-aging. The anti-inflammatory effect (hyaluronidase inhibition) of extract of Picnic apple were 4.62% with water extract and 4.39% with ethanol extract both at $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolics concentration. Both water and ethanol extract showed low ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibition effect but each showed 67.37 and 79.16% of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition effect at $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolics concentration. In anti-wrinkle effect, water extract showed each 23.70 and 66.29% in elastase inhibition and collagenase inhibition and ethanol extract showed 64.83 and 65.70% each. These result show high potential for functional food and cosmetic source. Picnic apple was identified to have various functions of anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-wrinkle effect, and anti-diabetic effect. Therefore, Picnic apple is qualified as a source for new functional cosmetics and functional foods.
