  • Building materials have a great impact on the health of a building's occupants. Thus, it is imperative that their health-related properties be taken into during the course of construction project. Unfortunately, no current database system exists that can provide information on the health performance of building materials at each stage of construction project management, from planning and design to building and maintenance. therefore, an inordinate amount of time and effort is required to choose the right health-friendly materials(DBHM). To solve this problem, this study aims at building a database management system for health-friendly building materials. It analyzes the health-related properties and performance of various materials, and proposes a database structure and operation algorithm. The system proposed in this study is expected to contribute to the objective evaluation of health-friendly building materials through the accumulation of relevant data.

Interview items about environmentally-friendly hospital management were selected from ISO 14001, Korean Green Management Certification Scheme, Green Guide Operation Version 2.2 of GGHC, Eco-ChecklistTM, Self-Assessment Tool of "Practice Greenhealth" and some accreditation credits of LEED, BREEAM, GreenStar. • The increasing interest in environment-friendly products brought the new so-called 'health furnitures. 'Recently health-friendly-furnitures have gained a larger share in the furniture market, but the method of making health furnitures is still stuck in the primitive stage. For example, a bed with a stone or ceramic plate is one of the most famous health furniture to date. It needs a design fairly different from an ordinary bed that uses a mattress, but there has been little development on how different it would be. Therefore the purpose of this study is to develop a new design for a newly designed stone bed to make it n)ore competitive in the market. Its basic concept is to make an high-tech but human friendly bed. It should be natural and minimal, and it should have a royal grace on it. We worked on how to maximize every requirement and applied on it. Lastly, we had an eco-friendly final touch on our new bed with environment-friendly natural lacquer, so it could discharge volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde as little as possible.

  • Although breastfeeding is recognized to be vital to the health and well-being of children and women, the rate of breastsfeeding among Korean women has continuously decreased. One barrier to breastfeeding has been identified to be associated with health care providers. Health care professionals do not give sufficient advice and encouragement, next do hospitals provide supportive environments for breastfeeding by separating infants from mothers or providing formula. The purpose of this study was to investigate prenatal breastfeeding education and infant feeding practices in public health centers and baby-friendly hospitals. A telephone survey was carried out on 57 public health centers located in the Seoul and Chungcheong areas and 13 baby-freindly hospitals from February to April in 2000. Among the public health centers, 43.8% offered periodic prenatal education for pregnant women who visited the centers. Most of them used leaflets or pamphlets developed by the Ministry of Health and Welfare or UNICEF. Twenty six percent of the public health centers developed their own educational materials. All of the 13 baby-friendly hospitals gave additional fluids to infants, did not allow mothers and infants to stay together 24 hours a day, and did not foster the establishment of breatfeeding support groups among the mothers. Most of the baby-friendly hospitals gave artificial teats, did not help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a half-hour of birth. Findings indicate that current practices even in the baby-friendly hospitals are not consistent with the '10 steps to success breastfeeding'. Therefore, deliberate efforts should be made to incorporate adequate breastfeeding education into prenatal program in both public health centers and hospitals, and create environments to support breastfeeding in hospitals, even in baby-friendly hospitals.
