Affecting Factors on Food Habits related Health Behavior Activities of Adolescents (청소년의 식습관이 건강행위실천에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Although adolescents' obesity prevalence increases recently in Korea due to Westernized dietary life, according to social and economic development, and physical activity decline, distorted body image and improper dietary habits are prevalent, because of excessive obsession with weight control, deriving from psychological impacts including appearance supremacy. This study conducted a survey on health oriented awareness and attitude related with dietary habits targeting adolescents, such as high school students and college students, younger than 24, from May 11 to May 29, 2015. In this study, 280 questionnaire copies were collected out of 300 distributed questionnaire copies, and used 269 copies as analysis data, except 11 copies of which responses were inadequate. The results of this study are as follows: First, the high school students showed higher dietary regularity than the college students. Especially, 95.5% of the college students showed very high irregularity of lunch, compared with just 4.5% of the high school students. Second, the adolescents showed distorted perceived body image in comparison with body mass index (BMI). As a result of examining BMI relationship, according to one's own perception on body type, 28.6% of the respondents perceived themselves fat, despite normal BMI, and 40.4% of the respondents perceived themselves normal, despite low BMI. Third, health behavior activities level was higher, as the regularity of breakfast (B=1.093), lunch, (B=0.650), and dinner (B=0.765) was higher. The variable affecting the most ( ${\beta}=0.372$) was the regularity of breakfast. As interest in weight control was higher, health behavior activities was lower. Because over-interest in weight control may be linked with improper dietary habits or weight control, a caution is needed. The results of this study are expected to be utilized as the basic data for the policy and health-oriented program development to improve adolescents' health behavior practice.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the body weight perception of adolescents and to investigate the difference between mental health and weight control behavior according to body weight perception. Methods: Study data on 12-18 years old adolescents with normal BMI was obtained from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015). Rao-Scott Chi-square test and ANOVA were used for the analysis. Results: The percentage of adolescents with a misperception of body weight was 43.3%, and their subjective health status (p=.013), stress perception (p=.001), and depression (p=.001) were worse than for adolescents who had the correct perception of their body weight. The percentage of adolescents who were trying to lose weight while perceiving their body weight as normal was 36.9%. Body weight control behavior had significant differences according to dietary intake (frequency of eating dinner (p=.015)), energy intake (p=.004), and carbohydrate intake (p<.001), but there was no significant difference according to exercise. Conclusion: Parents, school teachers, and nurses should make efforts to ensure that Korean adolescents perceive their body weight correctly, and prevent unhealthy weight control behaviors.

A Study of Factors Influencing Health Promoting Behavior and Quality of Life in the Elderly (노인의 건강증진 행위 및 삶의 질에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing health promoting behavior and quality of life in the elderly, to provide the basic data for health promoting intervention in order to improve quality of life. The subjects of this study were 571 elderly person over the age of 65, living in Seoul, Korea, during the period from November, 1997 to January, 1998. The instruments for this study were the health promoting behavior scale developed by Walker et (1987), the quality of life scale by 노유자(1988), the health concept scale by Laffrey(1986), the perceived health states scale by Lawston et al. (1982), the health value scale by Wallston et al. (1978), the self esteem scale by Rogenberg(1965) and the self efficacy scale by Sherer(1982). The instruments for this study were pretested on the elderly for reliability and validity. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients ANOVA and stepwise multiple regression. The results of this study are as follows ; 1. The health promoting behavior showed significant positive correlation with health concept, perception of health status, self esteem, internal health locus of control, self efficacy and quality of life in the elderly. 2. The quality of life showed significant positive correlation with health concept, perception of health status, self esteem, internal health locus of control, self efficacy in the elderly, 3. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of health promoting behavior was quality of life. A combination of quality of life, health concept, perceived health status, self esteem, internal health locus of control, and self efficacy accounted for 46% of the variance in health promoting behavior in the elderly. 4. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of quality of life in the elderly was self esteem. A combination of self esteem. From the results of the study, the following recommendations are presented as follow : 1. Development of a health promoting program to improve quality of life in the elderly. 2. In developing the health promoting program, the above major influencing factors be considered. 3. It is suggested that an education specialist in practice in the community be included in the program development.

Effects of Menstrual Self-management Education Program on Knowledge and Behavior of Menstrual Self-management in High School Girls (여자고등학생의 월경기 자가관리 교육 프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: To examine the effect of menstrual self-management education program on knowledge and behavior of menstrual self-management in high school girls. Methods: With a randomized controlled trial, 100 high school girl students were randomly assigned into experimental group and control group. Menstruation self-management program was consisted of a total of four sessions of education program (1 hour of education per session). Control group only received the first class of education. Measurement tools were 20-item menstrual knowledge scale and 12-item women's genito-urinary hygiene scale. Pretest and post-test questionnaires were administered. Results: There were significant differences in menstrual knowledge as well as menstrual self-management behavior between the two groups. The experimental group showed significant improvement in both menstrual knowledge score (t=13.37, p<.001) and menstrual self-management behavior score (t=8.38, p<.001) than the control group. Conclusion: Results of this study suggest that the monthly self-management education program is effective in increasing the knowledge of menstruation of female high school students and enhancing their performance. This program needs to be implemented as a part of high school's standard sex education. Further study is needed to analyze follow-up effects of the program on self-management behavior of students after at least one menstrual cycle.

Correlation of Childcare Teachers' Knowledge of Infectious Diseases, Health Locus of Control, Self-Efficacy, and Practice of Disease Prevention during the COVID-19 Pandemic (코로나 19 팬데믹 상황에서 보육교사의 감염병 지식, 건강통제소재, 자기효능감과 감염병 예방행위 실천의 관계)

  • Objective: This study aims to provide empirical data on epidemic management measures and childcare teacher education in centers. It examines the relationship between infectious disease knowledge, health control knowledge, and self-efficacy in relation to the practice of preventive behaviors among infant and toddler teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The study involved 300 teachers from Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS 23.0. Results: The study found that there is a positive relationship between childcare teachers' knowledge of infectious diseases and their engagement in preventive behavior. Additionally, internal control among the health care factors of childcare teachers also showed a positive relationship. Furthermore, the study revealed that the self-efficacy of childcare teachers is positively associated with their practice of preventive behavior. Overall, infectious disease knowledge, internal control measures, and self-efficacy were all found to have positive relationships with preventive behavior. Conclusion/Implications: This study proposes a new direction for future teacher education by highlighting the effectiveness of psychological factors, specifically health control materials and self-efficacy, in addition to focusing on improving infectious disease knowledge.

A Survey on Health Promoting Behavior and its Related Factors for High School Students (고등학생의 건강증진행위와 관련요인 분석)

  • In order to identify the health promoting behavior and its related factors for high school students, a survey was performed from 4th to 8th of December 2000. Population were selected by stratified random sampling method and total 355 students replied to the self-administered questionnaire survey. Data analysis was done by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA. Pearson's Correlation, stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows: 1. The average score of health promoting behavior practices was 2.23(SD=.41) points by the 4 point scale, which was lower than that of adults. In the subcategories, the highest degree of performance was self-actualization (mean= 2.68, SD=.68), and the lowest degree was health responsibility (mean = 1.33, SD= .41). 2. According to gender(t=2.70, p=.00), school type(t=2.53, p=.01), father's educational level(F=4.16, p=.00), sleeping hours(F=3.80, p = .02), and number of hours at school (F=4.44, p=.01), there were a statistically significant differences in modifying factors. of health promoting behavior. 3. Health promoting behavior showed significant positive correlations with self- efficacy(r= .461. p= .000), internal health locus of control (r=.284, p=.000), perceived health status (r=.163, p=.002). 4. The combination of self-efficacy, internal health locus of control. school type, and gender explained 30% of the variance of health promoting behavior. Therefore, the findings of research can serve as the basis for developing health promoting programs, which enhance self-efficacy and performed in school and community.

The Effects of a PMS Nutritional Education Program for College Students (PMS 영양교육 프로그램의 효과 측정 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of a PMS nutritional education program for college nursing students. Method: Subjects consisted of nursing students(experimental group: 19, control group: 27). The experimental group participated in a PMS nutritional education program for 8 weeks (including group and individual involvement). Data was collected before and after the education, and measurement tools were premenstrual symptoms, PMS knowledge, and self health behavior. Results: After the intervention, the experimental group showed a significant increase in PMS knowledge(Z=6.32, p=.000) and self health behavior(t=3.00, p=.004) compared to the control group. After the intervention the experimental group showed a significant increase in PMS knowledge(Z=-4.64, p=.000) and self health behavior(t=-3.04, p=.005) than before the intervention. Conclusions: These results suggest that the short term effects of a PMS nutritional education program for nursing students was proven useful and the program should be applied to PMS nutrition education for PMS clients as well as health professionals.

Comparative Study on Self-care Behavior Related Factors for Good, Inadequate and Poor Glycemic Control Groups: Based on Variables from Theory of Planned Behavior, Habit, and Family support (혈당조절 양호군, 불충분군, 불량군간의 당뇨병 자가간호행위 관련요인 비교 - 계획된 행위이론, 습관, 가족지지를 중심으로)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to compare self-care behaviors and self-care behavior related factors for groups of patients with good, inadequate and poor glycemic control. The study was based on variables of the Theory of Planned Behavior by Ajzen, habit and family support. (1991). Methods: Participants were 134 patients with type 2 diabetes (good glycemic control group: 57, inadequate glycemic control group: 40, poor glycemic control group: 37). Self-care behaviors, intention to self-care behavior and self-care behavior related variables (attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavior control, habits and family support) were measured. Data were collected from August 12 to September 25, 2014 and were analyzed using $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, ANCOVA, and logistic regression with SPSS/WIN 21.0. Results: Among the three glycemic groups, there were significant differences in self-care behavior, subjective norms, perceived behavior control, family support, and habits. Multinomial logistic regression showed that poor blood glucose probability was associated with duration of diabetes mellitus, method of DM therapy, perceived behavior control and habits. Conclusion: The study findings reveal the important role of self-care behavior, subjective norms, perceived behavior control, family support, and habits in blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Oral health behavior and oral health education experience among Korean adolescents: The ninth(2013) web-based survey of Korean youth risk behavior (한국 청소년의 구강건강행태와 구강보건교육 경험의 실태)

  • Objectives: The objective of the study is to investigate oral health behavior and oral health education experience in Korean adolescents from the ninth(2013) web-based survey of Korean youth risk behavior. Methods: The subjects were 72,435 students through the ninth 2013 web-based survey of Korean youth risk behavior conducted by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Korea Centers for Disease Control. The questionnaire consisted of socio-demographical characteristics of the subjects, oral health behavior, and oral health education experience. Data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. Results: Oral health education had much influence on tooth brushing after lunch, oral cavity disease prevention, sealants, fluoride application, scaling experience, and consumption of vegetables, milk, carbonated soft drinks, noodles, and snacks. The oral health education had a great impact on those who took good oral health behavior into action. Conclusions: It is very important and necessary to develop the continuing effective oral health education program for the adolescents and make them tale into action.

Effects of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Education on College Women's Knowledge, Health Belief, and Preventive Behavior Intention (여대생에게 실시한 인유두종 바이러스 예방접종 교육의 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to evaluated the effects of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination education on college women's knowledge of HPV, health beliefs (perceived severity and perceived susceptibility), and preventive behavior intention. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design with repeated measures was used. Participants were 125 female college students in one university, assigned to an experimental group (72 students) and control group (53 students). Results: Two weeks after the intervention, the experimental group reported higher scores of knowledge, perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, and preventive behavior intention than the control group. All follow-up scores except intention measured at 5 weeks after the intervention from the experimental group remained still higher than those from the control group. Conclusion: The results suggest that the variable of preventive behavior intention which is believed to be the closest predictor of real vaccination rate could be affected by the education, but did not remain at the same level at 5 weeks. Therefore, additional interventions may need to be provided before the educational effect on preventive behavior intention is greatly diminished.
