The instrument used for this study was a self-report questionnaire to identify maternal health variables including child rearing burden and social support. Results: Parent's education level, marital status, and primary caregiver were significantly different according to socioeconomic status. Poverty stricken groups showed poor rates for prenatal checkups, lower Fe supplementation, and more artificial abortions and history of cesarean section. Continuing breast feeding as planned was significantly lower for mothers with low economic status. Present health problems of the mother, child-rearing burden, and social support were not significantly different among the three groups. Conclusion: These findings suggest that special attention and interventions for the poverty stricken groups is important to improve maternal and child health status.

Statistical software was used for SPSS (SPSS 23.0 for Windows, SPSS Inc, USA). Significance level was considered as 0.05. Results: A multisample logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between systemic diseases and denture wear status. The results showed that the dentured state had a significant effect on dyslipidemia and diabetes. Conclusion: Dyslipidemia and diabetes, which are related to denture wearing condition, need to be prevented and treated with regular checkups. In addition, based on the results of the study, it is thought that the elderly need denture prosthetic treatment after tooth extraction. • This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the Marriage Checkup (MC) in community settings. Participants (N=57) were recruited from family centers and participated in the MC, which consisted of assessment and feedback visits. Participants completed marital satisfaction assessments before and after the MC. Overall, the participants reported significant improvements in terms of marital satisfaction with a large effect size (d=0.87). Specifically, 77.2% of participants demonstrated an increase in marriage satisfaction. Among them, 30.6% experienced a clinically significant change (from a clinical state to a non-clinical state). The reliable change index (RCI) identified 15.8% of participants as showing reliable improvement. Changes in marital satisfaction were larger for men and participants who experienced more positive changes during the MC in terms of intimacy and understanding of how to improve their marital relationships. This study supports the MC as an evidence-based approach for improving relationship health in community settings.

  • With South Korea entering aging society, the problem of the elderly living alone is aggravating due to increasing health risks associated with social isolation. This should be counteracted by providing them with supports conducive to the recovery of social relationship and effective management of daily activities, such as health checkups, homecare services, chore services, and contents building for information service. This paper presents a human care system implementing miniaturization and portability for the elderly and other care recipients by integrating various contents into recipients' situation perception, direct experience, and sensor modules as a smartphone application in Internet of Things environment to facilitate their health status monitoring.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to identify the level of health literacy and to investigate the relationship between the health literacy and preventive health care use in middle-aged adults in Korea. Methods: A total of 315 adults aged 40 to 64 years living in Seoul participated in the study. Data were collected from December 15-24, 2010 from outpatient hospitals, clinics, workplaces and other locations in the community. Health literacy was measured using the Functional Health Literacy and Self-rated Health Literacy Questionnaires. Preventive health service use was defined as receiving screening (general health checkups, gastric and colorectal cancer, mammogram, and pap smear) and influenza vaccination. Descriptive analysis, t-test, and ANOVA were used. Results: The mean of functional health literacy was 3.87 (score range 0-6) and the self-rated health literacy was 60.08 (score range 16-80). The most difficult items of the self-rated questionnaires were patient educational materials provided by health care providers and medical forms. The most difficult items of functional health literacy were information-based, including nutritional facts and clinical schedules. Association between health literacy and preventive health service use was not found. Conclusions: Further study is necessary with larger samples and with considerations for their education level, age, and preventive health care use.

Study variables were induced from Pender's Health Promotion Model. The subjects were 160 persons who had a check-up at the health promotion center in a university hospital in Tae-Gu, between September 8 and 22, 1998. The following instruments were used in the study : Lee Tae Wha's Health Promoting Life-style Profile, Park Chai soon's Self-efficacy Instrument and Moon Jeong Soon's Perceived Benefit and Barrier Instrument. Data was collected by self-reporting questionnaire. Analysis of the data was done by SAS program, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson-Correlation Coefficient. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The average score for the health-promotion behavior was 104.64. In the subcategories, self-actualization showed the highest degree of performance and physical exercise showed the lowest degree of performance. 2. In the relation of general characteristics of subjects to the level of health-promoting behavior, the male, the married, the group with several symptoms showed a high level of health-promoting behavior. 3. The relationship between the degree of performance in health-promotion behavior and its correlates were as follows: Self-efficacy was positively correlated to health promotion behavior, while the perceived barrier was correlated negatively. But the perceived benefit did not show a significant correlation with health promotion behavior. Results suggest that the development of programs with strategies to strengthen doing physical exercise and concerning health, increase self-efficacy and exclude the barriers to health promotion is recommended to individuals seeking a comprehensive health check-up.

  • With the burden of chronic diseases mounting among the population as a result of its aging, the importance of health examination is being stressed in order to identify and manage diseases in the early stage. Health examination in Korea is divided largely into periodic health examination provided as a national health screening program and individual physical checkups. The advantages of the former include little economic burden on the examined and those of the latter include the freedom of the individual to select various examination headings depending on the individual's characteristics and preferences. With both examinations now being expanded, empirical analyses from various standpoints are needed. This study proposes to analyze traits of the examined and non-examined as shown in the facts and figures of the 1st and 2nd Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA), thereby make the determinant factors clear leading to the acceptance of the examinations, and analyze the effects of the examinations upon maintaining or moving to healthy lifestyle. It was confirmed that demographic features such as gender and age, socioeconomic features such as the level of education, place of residence and household income, physical and mental state of health such as chronic disease and dementia, and daily living habits are significantly related with whether to accept physical examination. It is also confirmed that physical examination leads to non-smoking, regular physical exercises and regular dietary habits. It is suggested that, to enhance effects of health examinations, follow-up management programs making use of results of health examinations be further expanded, and the national health screening program be more actively put into operation for the bracket lying in the blind spot of the program.
