This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of harvesting time of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam; IRG) in spring on dry matter (DM) yield. IRG cultivars 'Kowinearly' and 'Greenfarm' were seeded at 50 kg/ha and grown on rice paddy fields. There was no difference in growth characteristics between both varieties before winter. However, cold tolerance of Kowinearly was higher than that of Greenfarm, as demonstrated by post-wintering growth characteristics. The heading date of both varieties was affected by the spring weather. The IRG was harvested three times at 5-day intervals beginning from 9 May. The DM yield of Greenfarm was 6,306; 7,335; and 8,109 kg/ha, and that of Kowinearly was 7,498; 9,196; and 10,449 kg/ha at the three consecutive harvests. The delay of the harvesting time for 5 and 10 days increased the DM yield of Greenfarm by 16% and 29% and that of Kowinearly by 23% and 39%, respectively, compared to the yield at first harvest (p < 0.05). Therefore, IRG harvest later than early to mid-May is expected to increase productivity. The feed values of Greenfarm were: 12.2% of crude protein (CP), 34.5% of acid detergent fiber (ADF), 57.7% of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 61.6% of total digestible nutrients (TDN), and 72.3% of in vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD). For Kowinearly, these values were 16.4% of CP, 30.4% of ADF, 52.7% of NDF, 64.9% of TDN and 79.0% of IVDMD.
In order to compare the forage value and to promote the growth without the hindrance of rice transplanting period for several forage crops as prior crops of paddy field, this experiment was conducted. Three kinds of foliar application, such solution as Urea, Gibb. and Gibb. +Urea were applied to promote the growth. The results gained are summarized as follows; 1. According to the forage crops, there were large difference of yields. The rankings of yield were shown as follows; Fresh weightㆍDry weight : Oats. Italian rye grass. White clover. Corn. Soybean. Crude protein content: Soybean. White clover. Corn. Italian rye grass. Oats. Crude protein Yield: White clover. Italian rye grass. Oats. Corn. Soybean. 2. The ranking of suitable forage crops as prior crops of paddy field were Oats, Italian rye grass, White clover, but Corn and Soybean were unsuited. 3. In general, length of stem, length and width of leaf were enlarged such rank as foliar application of Urea, Gibb. and Gibb. + Urea solution. There were apt to be increased fresh and dry weight by growth of stem length, these trend were shown among all crops and between foliar applications of same crops. 4. All crops were shown not only promoted growth but also increased yield by every treatments. The order of application effects were as follows; Fresh weigthㆍDry weigth: Gibb., Gibb. +Urea, Urea. Crude protein content and yield: Urea, Gibb, Gibb. + Urea. 5. In Oats, heading date was more accelerated 1, 2 and 3 days than control by foliar application of Urea, Gibb. and Gibb. + Urea respectively.
Growth performance of dry seeded paddy rice was studied at four N levels (10, 15, 20, and 25 kg/l0a) in tillage and no-tillage systems. Althougth the number of seedlings and maximum tillers tended to be higher and heading date was delayed by 2 days in tillage compared with those in no-tillage system, grainyield, yield components, lodging related characteristics, and N uptake were similar between two tillage ,systems. As N level increased, grain yield increased due to increased panicle number althougth the number of spikelets per panicle and percent ripended grains were similar and I, 000 grain weight decreased slightly. {Lodging index increased with increased N level due to higher plant height and decreased breaking strength and (culm base weigth, but lodging was not occurred in the field. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents of culm base were similar among N levels. Concentration and uptake of N increased as N level increased.
Flowering time is determined by florigens. These genes include, Heading date 3a (Hd3a) and Rice FT 1 (RFT1) in rice, which are specifically expressed in the vascular tissues of leaves at the floral transition stage. To study the cis-regulatory elements present in the promoter region of Hd3a, we generated transgenic plants carrying the 1.75-kb promoter fragment of Hd3a that was fused to the ${\beta}$-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene. Plants expressing this construct conferred a vascular cell-specific expression pattern for the reporter gene. However, GUS was expressed in leaves at all developmental stages, including the early seedling stage when Hd3a was not detected. Furthermore, the reporter was expressed in roots at all stages. This suggests that the 1.75-kb region lackings cis-elements that regulate leaf-specific expression at the appropriate developmental stages. Deletion analyses of the promoter region indicated that regulatory elements determining vascular cell-specific expression are present in the 200-bp region between -245 bp and -45 bp from the transcription initiation site. By transforming the Hd3a-GUS construct to rice cultivar 'Taichung 65' which is defective in Ehd1, we observed that Ehd1 is the major regulatory element that controls Hd3a promoter activity.
This study was conducted to determine the agronomic characteristics of low amylose lines which were derived from induced mutants by T-DNA insertion. The agronomic and physicochemical properties of the low amylose mutants were analyzed and compared with a donor cultivar 'Dongjin' and a low amylose cultivar 'Baekjinju'. The heading date of the low amylose mutants was similar to the donor cultivar 'Dongjin' and yield index of the mutants was 78~92% compared with 'Dongjin'. The amylose content of four mutants in brown rice was ranged from 16.1 to 16.7%. Among low amylose mutants, 'P50-4-4-5' was lower 3.6%(13.3%) than those of 'Dongjin'(16.9%) in amylose content of milled rice. The grain length of 'P50-4-4-5' was similar to the donor cultivar, however, thousand grain weight(18.9g) was lighter than those of 'Dongjin'. The score of alkali digestion in brown rice of 'P50-4-4-5'(5.5) was lower than that of 'Dongjin'(6.8) and similar to 'Baekjinju'(5.8). The gel consistency of 'P50-4-4-5'(84mm) in milled rice exhibited that was longer than 'Dongjin'(76mm) and 'Baekjinju'(81mm). The result of eating quality showed that 'P50-4-4-5'(78.8) was higher than those of 'Dongjin'(60.3) and 'Baekjinju'(67.2). Thus our data suggest that 'P50-4-4-5' will facilitate the development of a new cultivar with low amylose rice.

It was unusual crop weather for 1998 and 1999 compared with normal in Korea. The consecutive days of the optimum ripening period for rice plant that had daily mean temperature 21-23C for 40 days after heading, increased with long anomalies in 1998-99. The air temperature during ripening period was much higher than the optimum temperature and lower sunshine hour than normal in the local adaptability tests of newly developed rice lines during those years. In response of rice cultivation to warming and cloudy weather during crop season, the yield shall be decreased. Most scientists agree that the rate of heating is accelerating and temperature change could become increasingly disruptive. Weather patterns should also become more erratic. Agrometeorologists could be analyzed yearly variations of temperature, sunshine hour and rainfall pattern focused on transient agroclimate change for last a decade. Rice agronomists could be established taking advantage of real time agricultural meteorology information system for fertilization, irrigation, pest control and harvest. Also they could be analyzed the characteristics of flowering response of the recommended and newly bred rice cultivars for suitable cropping plan such as cultural patterns and sowing or transplanting date. Rice breeders should be deeply considered introducing the characteristics of basic vegetative type of flowering response like Tonsil rices as prospective rice cultivars corresponding to global warming because of the rices needed higher temperature at ripening stage than Japonica rices, photoperiod sensitive and thermo-sensitive ecotypes
In rice-barley cropping systems, efficient utilization of barley straw is essential, both to improve the soil fertility and to conserve the environment. In order to identify the effects of barley straw mulch rates in rice cultivation, a rice cultivar, 'Gancheogbyeo', was directly seeded on a no-tillage field synchronized with barley harvesting with five barley straw mulch rates, i.e., 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 ton h $a^{-1}$ and agronomic characters of rice and soil nitrogen were determined. The increasing of barley straw mulch rates. Dominant weed species, chestnut, occurred in large amounts in no mulching or lower mulch rates than in higher mulch rates. The content of N $H_4$$_{+}$-N in soil applied with high barley straw mulch rates was lower during the month after seeding, and then it was higher at heading date, compared with lower mulch rates or no mulch plot. As the barley straw rate increased, maximum tillering stage was delayed, and plant height was reduced. Although the lodging of rice plants was seldom observed in all plots, the breaking strength of the culm was significantly higher in the mulch rate of 10.0 ton h $a^{-1}$ . With an increase of barley straw mulch rate, the effective tillering rate and spikelet number $m^{-2}$ decreased while ripened grain ratio increased. The rice grain yield was slightly decreased with an increase of barley straw mulch rate, although significant differences were not found all barley straw mulch rates. These results suggest that there is no significant yield loss although the total barley straw production, approximately 5.0 ton h $a^{-l}$ in the present study, apply in the paddy for the following rice cultivation by no-tillage direct seeding.ect seeding.
To assess the risk of genetically modified (GM) rice on the agricultural ecosystem, agronomic characteristics, pollen longevity and outcrossing rate between GM (Iksan 483 and Milyang 204) and non-GM (their wild types and female parents) varieties were investigated using the bar gene as a tracer marker in paddy field. The agronomic characteristics of two GM rice were similar to their female-parents (non-GM rice) except heading date and 1,000 grain weight of Iksan 483, and they did not show a difference by the introgression of the bar gene as the genetic traits of rice varieties. Pollen viability was more than 90% just after shedding, and it was rapidly decreased below 50% at 5 minutes after shedding both GM and non-GM varieties. The Pollen longevity was lost after 30 minutes of anthesis. When the distance of gene flow from GM to non-GM rice detected to 6 m from the edge of GM rice plant, the maximum distance of pollen dispersal was 4.5m and 3.9m in Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, respectively, and that was increased in order of west, south, east, and north to the dominant wind direction, west-south. Mean outcrossing rate was very low as 0.003 and 0.001% within 1.5 m from the edge of Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, and the GM hybrids by the pollen dispersal did not detected over 4.5 m from the edge of GM rice plant. The results may help to establish the strategy which reduce the risk of pollen-mediated gene flow between GM and non-GM rice.

No-tillage practices are expected to provide several benefits such as increasing soil organic matter, reducing labor time and saving energy cost compared with conventional tillage practices. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of no-tillage dry-seeding on rice growth and soil properties in comparison with other rice cultivation methods, machine transplanting and wet-hill-seeding on puddled paddy. Rice seedling establishment was slightly higher in no-tillage dry-seeding treatment ($145seedling\;m^{-2}$) than wet-hill-seeding on puddled paddy treatment ($111seedling\;m^{-2}$), but the seedling establishment in both treatments fell within the optimum range for direct seeding rice cultivation. Plant height, number of tillers and chlorophyll content (SPAD value) of rice in no-tillage dry-seeding treatment were higher than those of the other treatments. However, no significant differences in grain yield was observed among three cultivation methods, and the yield ranged 5.8 to $5.9ton\;ha^{-1}$. The heading date from seeding under no-tillage dry-seeding treatment was on average 109 days, which was similar to that under machine transplanting treatment (112 days), but 10 days later than that under wet-hill-seeding on puddled paddy treatment (99 days). Grain quality characteristics grown in no-tillage dry-seeding were similar to those grown in the other cultivation methods. These results indicate that no-tillage dry-seeding practice is comparable to conventional tillage system in terms of seedling establishment, growth, yields and grain quality.

We received 73 wheat resources from CIMMYT for analysis of agricultural characteristics and qualities of them. We sowed 73 lines and 4 Korean varieties in fall and spring to compare differences of wheat traits between fall and spring seeding. The heading and maturity date of fall seeding lines has coming faster average 18 days than spring seeding lines. Fall seeding lines have more number of spike per $m^2$ and grain number of spike. Spike and awn length of spring seeding lines were shorter than fall seeding lines and stem length was variable to varieties in both condition. Protein contents of five of 73 lines, Jokyoung and Jopoom varieties decreased but the others increased. The sedimentation values of 34 lines include Jokyoung and falling number (F/N) of 44 lines include two varieties, Keumkang and Jokyoung, decreased but the others increased, respectively. Particle size was presented that most spring seeding lines were bigger. However, when it sowed in fall, the lightness (L) of wheat flour was lighter. Consequently, we confirmed when it was sowed in spring, agricultural traits and qualities of wheat got weak.
