  • Planting date shift is one of the means of adapting to climate change in Kimchi Cabbage growers in major production areas in Korea. This study suggests a method to estimate the potential yield of Kimchi Cabbage based on daily temperature accumulation during the growth period from planting to maturity which is determined by a plant phenology model tuned to Kimchi Cabbage. The phenology model converts any changes in the thermal condition caused by the planting date shift into the heat unit accumulation during the growth period, which can be calculated from daily temperatures. The physiological maturity is estimated by applying this model to a variable development rate function depending either on growth or heading stage. The cabbage yield prediction model (Ahn et al., 2014) calculates the potential yield of summer cabbage by accumulating daily heat units for the growth period. We combined these two models and applied to the 1km resolution climate scenario (2000-2100) based on RCP8.5 for South Korea. Potential yields in the current normal year (2001-2010) and the future normal year (2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100) were estimated for each grid cell with the planting dates of July 1, August 1, September 1, and October 1. Based on the results, we divided the whole South Korea into 810 watersheds, and devised a three - dimensional evaluation chart of the time - space - yield that enables the user to easily find the optimal planting date for a given watershed. This method is expected to be useful not only for exploring future new cultivation sites but also for developing cropping systems capable of adaptation to climate change without changing varieties in existing production areas.

  • This experiment was conducted to find out an optimum direct seeding date for rice in the southern alpine area of Korea as direct seeding method being considered as the most labor-saving method. A cultivar which was sprouted, Keumobyeo, was sown on the surface of flooded paddy from April 25 to May 15 with 5-day interval. The growth characters such plant height, tiller numbers, yield and its components as well as air temperatures were observed. Earlier sowing showed longer plant height and greater tillers than later sowing. Accumulated temperatures in the different growth stages varied from 1,010 to 1,052$^{\circ}C$ during the period from seeding date to maximum tillering stage, and from 1,785 to 1,846$^{\circ}C$ during the period from seeding to heading dates. The growth of rice sown up to May 5 showed comparatively good when compared to that of machine-transplanted rice, even though the grain yield was not competitive to that of machine-transplanted rice. Highly negative correlation coefficients were found between accumulated temperature during the period of first 30 days after seeding dates and the number of panicles, the number of spikelets per square meter, and grain yield. Regression equation between direct seeding date(X) and yield(Y;MT /ha) was $\hat{Y}$ =3.80990+0.06207X-0.00174 $X^2$($R^2$=0.704), from which optimum seeding date for direct seeding method in alpine area was estimated to be on April 25 to May 1.

  • This study was conducted to determine the influence of seeding date on growth, characteristic yield and chemical composition of Italian millet (Setaria italica) from April 20 to May 30, 2003(April 20, May 1, May 20 and May 30) in Jeju. A local variety was seeded on days to heading were lessened as seeding date was delayed. The plant height was longest when seeded on 1 May(131cm) than at the other seeding dates. Stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf length and leaf width had the similar trend with plant height. SPDA reading values were greater at earlier seedings. Fresh forage yield was greatest (43.28MT/ha) at 1 May seeding and decreased gradually before or after this seeding date. Dry matter yield, crude protein yield and total digestible nutrient (TDN) yield had nearly the same tendency with fresh forage yield. Crude protein, crude fat, NFE and TDN contents were greatest at 30 May seeding and then decreased earlier seedings. Crude ash and crude fiber content tended to decreased as seeding was delayed. Based on the these findings, optimum seeding date for forage production of Italian millet seems to be early May in Jeju island.

  • For a measure against late transplanting, this experiment was conducted to investigate a reasonable seeding rate in nursery bed and a proper nursery size. The treatments applied to this experiment are as follows a) seeding rates: 0.2ι, 0.4ι and 0.6ι per 3.3$m^2$ b) nursery sizes. for 10a-field area: 39.6$m^2$, 49.5$m^2$ and 59.4$m^2$ c) transplanting dates: June 5, June 25 and July 15. The seeding date was April 26 and planting density was determined by the number of sound seedlings based on the combination of seeding rate and nursery size. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. In seedlings both increased nursery period and decreased seeding rate showed a remarkable-increase in plant height, number of leaves, dry matter weight and the ratio of dry weight to plant height. But their number of tillers and live leaves did not show such tendency. 2. Delayed transplanting date shortened culm length and panicle length as well as number of days from transplating to heading and it also delayed heading date. On the other hand the transplanting of 80-day seedlings resulted in premature heading. 3. As a result late transplanting reduced number of spikelets per panicle, maturing rate and 1000-grain weight. In the last analysis it linearly reduced grain yield. The decreasing rate of yield by late transplanting was 15.6% in June 25 plot and 41. 3% in July 15 plot, compared with the yield in June 5 plot. Such a remarkable decrease in yield of the extremely late transplanted plot was mainly due to markedly decreasing number of spikelets per panicle and 1000-grain weight. 4. Both increased seeding rate and nursery size gave a rise in number of tillers per unit area as well as number of transplanting hills but gave a fall in culm length and panicle length. 5. Accordingly, though thick seeded - dense planted plot increased number of panicles per unit area, decrease in number of spikelets per panicle and 1000-grain weight made no differences in yield between thick seeded - dense planted plot and thin seeded - sparse planted one. However, the yield in the thick seeded - dense planted plot transplanted on July 15 was reduced owing to the remarkable decrease in maturing rate and 1000-grain weight. 6. We came to the conclusion that as a measure against the extremely late transplanting the suitable seeding rate was 0.4ι per 3.3$m^2$ and the proper nursery size was 59.4$m^2$ for 10a-field area.

  • Koshihikari has been one of the most popular rice cultivars with good eating quality since the 1960s despite its susceptibility to blast disease and lodging. To map the genes controlling blast resistance and to develop promising blast-resistant breeding lines inheriting Koshihikari's high eating quality, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population was developed from a cross between Koshihikari and a blast resistance donor with early maturity, Baegilmi. A total of 394 Koshihikari × Baegilmi RILs (KBRIL), and the two parents, were evaluated for blast resistance and major agronomic traits including heading date, culm length, panicle length, and tiller number. A linkage map encompassing 1,272.7 cM was constructed from a subset of the KBRIL (n = 142) using 130 single nucleotide polymorphisms. Two quantitative trait loci (QTL) for blast resistance, qBL1.1 harboring Pish/Pi35 and qBL2.1 harboring Pib, were mapped onto chromosomes 1 and 2, respectively. qBL1.1 was detected in both of the experimental sites, Namwon and Jeonju, while qBL2.1 was only detected in Namwon. qBL1.1 and qBL2.1 did not affect agronomic traits, including heading date, culm length, panicle length, and tiller number. From the 394 KBRILs, lines that were phenotypically similar to Koshihikari were selected according to heading date and culm length and were further divided into the following two groups based on blast resistance: Koshishikari-type blast resistant lines (KR, n = 15) and Koshishikari-type blast susceptible lines (KS, n = 15). Although no significant differences were observed in the major agronomic traits between the two groups, the KR group produced a greater mean head rice ratio than the KS group. The present study provides useful materials for developing blast-resistant cultivars that inherit both Koshihikari's high eating quality and Baegilmi's blast resistance.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of rice double cropping in Korea by assessing the growth and yield performance of rice cultivars transplanted at the extremely-early date. When the transplanted rice seedling was exposed to low temperature below 0℃, the survival rate decreased drastically. However, short exposure to below 0℃ one or two times did not damage transplanted rice seedling so severely. Thus, the earliest transplanting in spring would be possible when minimum temperature rises above 0℃. Compared with the conventional seedling nursery tray (CSNT), seedling rearing with the potted nursery tray was more effective for increasing leaf age and seedling dry weight during nursery period. In the first rice cropping, rice cultivation with seedlings reared in PSNT showed shorter growth duration and cumulative temperature from transplanting to heading than that with seedlings reared in CSNT. The earliest heading date on July 4 in Jinbuolbyeo was earlier by two to three days than that of Dunaebyeo. If rice has not exposed to cold damage, the earliest heading date of Jinbujolbyeo can advance to June 30 or July 1. In this case, rice harvest would be possible on August 5, enabling the rice transplanting of the second rice cropping before August 10. At transplanting time with low temperature damage rice yield were less than 400 kg/10a while rice yield exceeded 400 kg/10a at transplanting time without low temperature damage.

  • This experiment was conducted to understand the response on sowing rates at furrow sowing of rice in paddy field. As sowing rates was increased, the number of seedling stand per$m^2$ was icreased, while panicie number per plant was decreased slightly. Leaf area at heading stage and effective tiller ratio were decreased with increasing of sowing rates, but heading date was not defferent among sowing rates. According to sowing rates was increased, culm length, panicle length, breaking strength, culm diameter were decreased, while lodging index was increased. Also, field lodging was observed in the higer sowing rates over 5kg/l0a. Althougth the panicle number per $m^2$ was increased with increasing of sowing rates, spike let per panicle and percent of filled spikelet were decreased. According to the result from the path coefficient analysis, percent of filled spikelets well identified to be the most influential variables on the variability in rice yield, so that improving percent of filled spikelets by inhibition of field lodging was the important matter to increase the yield. The optimal sowing rate and the number of seedling stand were estimated to be 4.5kg/l0a and 105 per $m^2$ respectively.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the forage yield and quality and the possibility to provide Festulolium bmunii(Festuca pratensis $Huds{\times}Lolium$ mult~jlotum Lam.) as forage source in Korea. The Festuloliurn braunii were harvested at boot, heading and anthesis stage, respectively. The field trials were performed 6om 1994 to 1996 at the forage experimental field, College of agriculture, Chunpam National University. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The date of boot, heading and anthesis stage of Festulolium bmunii observed in Taejon were May 12, May 23 and June 1 in 1995, and June 1, June 4 and June 9 in 1996, respectively. Winter survival percentage of Festulolium bmunii war ranged 6om 96% to 98% and summer survival percentage were 75-86%. It would suggest that Festulolium brawlii persisted well in the aspect of overwintering, while it wasn' t widely adapted to drought and high temperature in Taejon regions. 2. The CP content and DMD of Festulolium bmunii tended to decline as the growth stage advanced. The CP content and DMD of Festulolium bmunii were high at the boot stage and those at the anthesis stage were low. But fiber contents at the boot stage were lower than those at anthesis stage(P< 0.05). The yields of the DM and DDM with advancing the growing stage tended to increase, while there was no difference in the CPDM yields among stages. On the otherhand, the yields of DM and DDM at the anthesis stage were the highest (P< 0.05), but there was no difference in CPDM yield among stages. Based on the results mentioned above, it is suggested that Festulolium b m n i i has a possibility to use until the anthesis stage under the cutting regimes and that it has a potentiality to provide one of a good forage sources. %'ifqqiZ 43q *(College of Agriculture, Chungnam National Un~versity, Taejon 305-764, Korea)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of Festulolium braunii(Festuca pratensis Huds. $\times$ Loliurn mulrijZorum Lam.)as forge sources. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with four replications from Feb. 1995. to Jan. 1996 at Hohenheim university. Main plots consisted of three forage species, Festulolirtrn braunii(Paulita), Lolium multiJomm(Lemtla), and Secale cereale(Halo) and subplots consisted of three maturity, boot, heading, and anthesis. The growth characteristics, DM yields, nutritive value, N and energy balance were observed. The heading date of Festulolium braunii was about two days earlier than that of Loliunz mrtltiflorum, farthermore Fesrulolium braunii retained higher leaf weight ratio(LWR) than other species. Festulolium brarrnii failed to show any significant differences in grass length, number of tillers, LAI, CGR, and DM accumulation when harvested at the same stage of maturity as compare with Loliurn mulriiflorutn or Setale cerede, bur the content of CP, OMD, and mineral elements and NEL value of Festulolium braunii compare to othes were slightly increased(P<0.05), while the content of NDF, ADF, and lignin decreased(P<0.05). The yield of CP was greater for Festulolium braunii than for Lolium multfimm and yields of DOM and NEL per unit area(ha) for Festulolium braunii were greater than for other species(P<0.05). The equivalent or higher DM production and nutritive value are obtained when Festulolium braunii are cut during the period from boot to anthesis stages, therefor DM intake, preference, and N and energy balance were also higher for Festulolirtm braunii compare to for other species. It could be suggested that Lolium multrfirum would be a more suitable substitute to Festuloliron braunii without decreasing forage production and quality, but the substitutive effect of Secale cereale would be difficult because of the maor differences in growth type and period compare to Fesrulolium braunii. From above the results of this experiment it appears that Festulolium braunii have a potential to provide forage sources. but funher research is needed to ascertain their potential under the climate of Korea.

  • In an attempt to obtain a basic information to develop methods of an effective chemical control and disease forecasting of panicle blast of rice, effects of conidial number of the causal fungus, Pyricularia oryzae, collected in different periods and the rate of leaf blast occurrence on the occurrence of panicle blast were investigated. Conidial number the fungus collected in 5 days before and after heading date were closely related with panicle blast occurrence. But no relationship was obtained between the occurrence rate of leaf blast and that of panicle blast. Considering the incubation period of the disease, we presume that the most effective application periods of chemicals are 5-10 days and 10-15 days before heading, when immediate effective chemicals and slow effective chemicals are applied, respectively.
