  • The purpose of this study was to investigate possible age differences in the attenuation of acceleration in the upper body (from pelvis through shoulder to head) during fast walking. Thirty young and 29 elderly subjects participated in this study. Wireless acceleration sensors were attached on head, shoulder, and pelvis. Subjects performed two trials of fast walking on a treadmill, where the fast speed was defined as 1.5 times of the comfortable speed. Root-mean-squared (RMS) accelerations of each axis were compared with age group and sensor position as independent factors. In the AP direction, the pelvis acceleration was greater in the young and the shoulder-to-head attenuation was also greater in the young (p<0.001), so that the head acceleration was comparable between age groups (p=0.581). In the ML direction, the pelvis acceleration was greater in the young and also the pelvis-to-shoulder attenuation was greater in the young (p<0.001), so that the head acceleration was greater in the elderly group (p<0.001). Insufficient attenuation ML acceleration in the elderly resulting in the greater acceleration in the head may deteriorate the balance control which utilize feedback signals from the sensory organs in head, e.g., vestibular and visual systems.

  • In order to investigate the change of contact force of pantograph pan head due to the change of aerodynamic force, three dimensional flow around the pan head were calculated. For this, the aerodynamic modeling of pan head of CX pantograph was performed and the standard deviation of the contact force of the simulation results were compared with those of the experimental results of wind tunnel tests. From the comparison, it was confirmed that the current grid system and the numerical methodologies can be utilized to calculate the aerodynamic characteristics of the pantograph pan head. By using these grid system and the methodologies, the standard deviations of the contact force of pan head were calculated with velocities as 200, 250, 300, 350, and 400 km/h. The maximum standard deviation of the aerodynamic contact force of pan head was 92 N at 400 km/h and statistical minimum contact force was more than 0 N. Therefore, it was confirmed that and the pan head of CX pantograph was statistically contacted with the catenary system with the train speed of 350 km/h though the aerodynamic contact force was changed.

  • This study aimed to find the optimum instrumental test conditions for the Texture Profile Analysis (TPA) of cooked rice in order to predict the sensory texture attributes (hardness, adhesiveness, chewiness). Sensory evaluation was performed for three kinds of instant cooked rice with university students in their twenties and the results of the sensory evaluation were compared to instrumental TPA patterns. Using partial least squares regression, the instrumental TPA results at a cross-head speed of 1.0 mm/sec and a compression ratio of 70% proved to be an excellent predictor of the sensory attributes of hardness ($R^2=0.99$) and chewiness ($R^2=0.99$). The results at a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/sec and compression ratio of 30% provided an excellent model for the prediction of sensory adhesiveness ($R^2=0.83$). In this experimental range, sensory hardness and chewiness showed a high correlation with instrumental TPA parameters (hardness, cohesiveness, adhesiveness, springiness, chewiness) with a high cross-head speed and compression ratio, while sensory adhesiveness showed a high correlation with the TPA parameters with a low cross-head speed and compression ratio.

  • The swirl ratio of a charge in the cylinder was estimated by calculating the ratio of the rotary speed of charge which could be simulated from the rotary speed of paddle in the swirl measurement apparatus, to the engine speed which could be calculated by measuring intake air flow rate. The automation of the swirl ratio measurement for cylinder head was achieved by controling both valve lift in cylinder head and a suction pressure of surge tank using two step-motors. The number of measurement position for calculating mean swirl ratio was varied by adjusting the interval of valve lift. The mean swirl ratio with varying the number of measurement position showed nearly constant value. Two measurement methods for measuring the swirl ratio were compared, one was to control the suction pressure of the surge tank with PID (proportional, integral, differential) mode with by-pass valve controlled by the step motor and the other did not control the surge tank pressure by fixing the by-pass valve. The difference of the mean swirl ratio between the two measurement methods showed nearly constant value with varying the number of measurement position. This means that the w/o PID control method could be preferred to the PID control method which has been used, due to the simpleness of the swirl measurement.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the biomechanical determination factor for improving club head speed during the driver swing in male golf players. Method: Twenty-seven golf players were participated in this study. Eight motion capture cameras (250 Hz) and two force plates (2,000 Hz) were used to collect peak angular velocity and ground reaction force data. It was performed stepwise multiple linear regression analysis and alpha set at .05. Results: The peak plantar flexion angular velocity of the left ankle joint and the peak adduction angular velocity of the right shoulder joint were statistically significant. The peak plantar flexion angular velocity of the left ankle joint and the peak adduction angular velocity of the right shoulder during downswing. Conclusion: It is suggested that applying body conditioning training aimed at improving related body functions to increase maximum plantar flexion angular velocity in the left ankle joint will be effective in improving club head speed.

  • Whiplash is the most frequent injury among occupants in low speed rear-end car collision. The aim of this paper is to analyze thecorrelation between influence parameters of head restraints and whiplash injury criteria. In this paper, DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) method is used for optimum design of head restrains. Four control factors of head restraints have selected by function matrix method. The effects of the control factors have been experimentally evaluated by using a sled pulse from 16km/h relative velocity which is suggested by KNCAP (Korean New Car Assessment Program). In order to reduce the noise factors of dynamic tests, whiplash tests were repeated twice. By using DFSS, the correlation between control factors and injury criteria has been comprehended.

  • This paper presents a general description of single and dual contact tooling systems, finite element analysis, and discussions on the application of the system to the 5-head router machine which is in particular for aerospace components. This study has been performed as part of the development of the new generation 5-head router machine which is designed for high productivity. Such high productivity in essence requires high speed rotation and multiple spindles in one machine. The high speed rotation may exceed a range in a conventional single contact tooling system. The conventional tooling system is reevaluated in comparison with the dual-contact system. Finite element analysis using simplified spindle models compares major differences in the two systems. Some problems in the application to the 5-head router machine are discussed.

  • This research demonstrates the shock response analysis of a head disk assembly subjected to a half-sine shock pulse in the axial direction. In case of disk analysis, the numerical method presented by Barasch and Chen is used. Galerkin method is used with mode shape by numerical method. Head-suspension system is modeled as the cantilever in order to get simulation results. Simulation results of HDA are calculated by Runge-Kutta method. Finally, shock responses of head and disk are analyzed according to the change of the rotating speed of the disk.

  • This study describes the conduction of heat in the discharge head of air compressor. It also gives a base for a finite elements analysis of two dimenional steady -state heat conduction in the cylinder head of air cooled type reciprocating compressor. Using a single cylinder compressor operated at a given speed, tests were made observing outside temperature, final pressure and discharge temperature of air in cylinder head. As a result, the following were obtained : (1) The rate oi heat flow from the inner surface of discharge head to outside wall reach 46. 328 kcal /h at a speed of 796rpm under the constant temperature of inlet air. (2) The compression work of air increase in accordance with temperature rise of inlet air.
