Hazardous wastes released into the general environment are of concern to the public and to public health authorities. In response to this concern, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, as amended (commonly called Superfund), was enacted in 1980 to provide a framework for environmental, public health, and legal actions concerning uncontrolled releases of hazardous substances. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) was created by Superfund to address the public health issues of hazardous wastes in the community environment. Two key Agency programs, Public Health Assessments and Toxicological Profiles, are designed to assess the risk to human health of exposures to hazardous substances that migrate from waste sites or through emergency releases (e.g., chemical spills). The Agency's public health assessment is a structured process that permits ATSDR to identify which waste sites or other point sources require traditional public health actions (e.g.. human exposure studies, health studies, registries, health surveillance, health advisories). The ATSDR qualitative public health assessment complements the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's quantitative risk assessment. For Superfund purposes, both assessments are sitespecific. ATSDR's toxicological profiles are prepared for priority hazardous substances found most frequently at Superfund sites. Each profile presents the current toxicologic and human health effects information about the substance being profiled. Each profile also contains Minimal Risk Levels (MRLs), a type of risk assessment value. This paper covers ATSDR's experience in conducting public health assessments and developing MRLs, and it relates this experience to recommendations on how to improve chemical risk assessments.

In general, computer industry is known as clean sector, but computer is a complicated assembly which is highly hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury, Hexavalent chromium, plastics etc. This paper was presented the quantity of hazardous substances in the personal computer and the problem of its disposition-incinerating, landfilling, recycling. Also EPR which is the solution of e-waste was introduced.
In order to evaluate NMR spectrometer as the analytical tool for identification of individual adjuvant in crop protection products, the standard sample of individual adjuvant was analyzed by NMR spectrometer and then the formulation of crop protection products was also analyzed. Almost polymer system of surfactant was a co-polymer and there was an excess of ethylene. The most intense signal comes from long polyethylene blocks, 70.5 ppm. The carbonyl groups of ester group resonate at 173.5 ppm. Analytical sample was prepared in NMR tube without extraction, cleanup, concentration, or chromatographic separation. Identification of individual adjuvant in crop protection products was conducted by comparison of sample and reference spectra. NMR spectrometer was useful to analyze adjuvant in crop protection products without preparation process.
We developed analytical methods using high performance chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for the simultaneous determination of 80 unapproved compounds in dietary supplements. The target compounds for analysis were unapproved ingredients (e.g., pharmaceuticals) that have potential adverse effects on consumers owing to accidental misuse, overuse, and interaction with other medication in dietary supplement. Two analytical methods were tested to identify the optimal validation results according to AOAC guideline. As a result, limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.14-0.5 ㎍ mL-1; linearity (r2) was ≥ 0.99; accuracy (expressed as recovery) was 78.9-114%; precision (relative standard deviation) was ≤ 4.28% in the HPLC method. In the LC-MS/MS method, LOQ was 0.01-2 ng mL-1, linearity (r2) was ≥0.98, accuracy was 71.7-119%; precision was ≤ 12.5%. The developed methods were applied to 51 dietary supplements collected from 2019 to 2021 through MFDS alert system. Based on our previous monitoring study, major compounds were icariin, sibutramine, yohimbine, sildenafil, tadalafil, sennosides (A, B), cascarosides (A, B, C, D), and phenolphthalein. In this study, we re-analyzed samples of detected compounds, and evaluated the statistical difference using Bland-Altman analysis to compare two analytical approaches between HPLC and LC-MS/MS. These results showed a good agreement between two methods that can be used to monitor the unapproved ingredients in dietary supplements. The developed two methods are complementarily suitable for monitoring the adulteration of 80 unapproved compounds in dietary supplements.
The reduction rate of pesticide residues on spinach(bifenthrin, metalaxyl, procymidone), chard(bifenthrin, imidacloprid) and mallow(bifenthrin, chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid) were tested on each step of washing and boiling(spinach: 1, 3, 5min., chard: 3, 6, 9min., mallow: 10, 20, 30min.). The reduction rates of bifenthrin and procymidone by washing were $58{\sim}64%$ and 82%, and these were not changed significantly after boiling. In case of imidacloprid, the rates showed 43% on chard and 12% on mallow by washing, and these were highly increased to 94% after boiling. And the reduction rate of metalaxyl and chloropyrifos were 69% and 11% by washing, and $96{\sim}98%$ and $77{\sim}79%$ by boiling. Specifically we monitored the pesticide residues on both boiled vegetable and its water because there are used to cook as soup in Korea. The total residual amounts of imidacloprid and chloropyrifos were effectively removed on both boiled mallow and its water ($12%{\rightarrow}34{\sim}40%$, $11%{\rightarrow}76{\sim}79%$), however, the other tested pesticides were not changed on pesticide residues when calculated with total amounts on boiled vegetable and its water. These explained the other pesticides were just moved vegetable to water by boiling.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes among the nine kinds of reduction chemical substances in Korea over the period of 2008-2017. We will define basic data for improving the management methods for reducing chemical substances. Methods: A survey of hazardous pollutant emissions for 2008-2017 was conducted through the pollutant Release and Transfer Register homepage. Nine kinds of designated reduction chemical substances (Benzene, Vinyl chloride, Trichloro ethylene, 1,3-butadiene, Dichloro methane, Tetrachloro ethylene, N,N-dimethylformamide, Acrylo nitrile, and Chloroform) provided the study subjects. The emission of hazardous chemicals and health effects used the National Health Statistics and Integrated Chemicals Information System (ICIS) as a reference. Results: Hazardous pollutant emissions increased by 1.2 times over the past decade, and nine types of reduction chemical substances increased by 1.6 times. By region, the emissions of reduction chemical substances over the last 10 years were in the order of Chungbuk, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongbuk. Emissions of Dichloro methane was the highest in Chungbuk and Gyeongbuk. N,N-dimethylformamide was the highest in Gyeonggi. Carcinogen pollutant emissions showed a tendency to increase continuously. In addition, group 1 carcinogen emissions showed a tendency to decrease. Conclusion: In the last decade, the amount of hazardous chemical emissions has been continuously increasing. Hazardous chemical emissions require facility improvement for continuous emissions reduction. More research on reduction of emissions is needed.

Objectives: This study was performed in order to establish reliable and relative selection criteria for hazardous substances requiring management(HSRM) in the Occupational Safety and Health Act in Korea. Methods: To determine the relative criteria and weight of evidence for HSRM, we analyzed the difference between the selection method of priority substances in studies by KOSHA(Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency) and the European Union Risk Ranking Method(EURAM). In addition, 597 hazardous substances with exposure limit valueswereanalyzed and the posted health hazards classification by MOEL(Ministry of Employee and Labor), MOE(Ministry of Environment), and EU CLP(Classification, Labelling and Packaging regulation) were compared based on GHS(Globally Harmonized System of classification and labelling of chemicals) criteria. The existing HSRM(167 substances) were evaluated for suitability by the proposed criteria in this study. Results: As a result of this study, the criteria and procedures for selecting HSRM in the Occupational Safety and Health Act were arranged utilizing GHS health hazard classification results, occupational disease cases and domestic use situations. Conclusions: The applicability of the proposed criteria was proved via the evaluation of existing HSRM(167 substances). Most HSRM (161 substances) were found to correspond to a significant health effect or substantial health effect. The question of whether to include the six substances that have been found to have general health effects as HSRM would be require further research.
In this study, we investigated the applicability of the photostimulated luminescence (PSL), thermoluminescence (TL), electron spin resonance (ESR) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods for 5 seeds which are not allowed to be irradiated in Korea. All 5 seeds including evening primrose seed, safflower seed, rape seed, sunflower seed and flax seed were analyzed. Samples were irradiated at 1~10 kGy using a $^{60}Co$ gamma-ray irradiator. In PSL study, the photon counts of all the unirradiated samples showed negative (lower than 700). The photon counts of irradiated (1, 5, 10 kGy) samples showed positive (higher than 5,000). In TL analysis, results showed that it is possible to apply TL method to all foods containing minerals. In ESR measurements, the ESR signal (single-line) intensity of irradiated foods was higher than non-irradiated foods. The hydrocarbons 1,7-hexadecadiene ($C_{16:2}$) and 8-heptadecene ($C_{17:1}$) from oleic acid were detected only in the irradiated samples before and after the treatment at doses ${\geq}$ 1 kGy, but they were not detected in non-irradiated samples before and after treatment. These two hydrocarbons could be used as markers to identify irradiated safflower seed, rape seed, Sunflower seed and flax seed. And then, the hydrocarbons 1,7,10-hexadecatriene ($C_{16:3}$) and 6,9-heptadecadiene ($C_{17:2}$) from linoleic acid were detected in the evening primrose seed, safflower seed and sunflower seed. According to the results, PSL, TL and GC/MS methods were successfully applied to detect the irradiated foods. It is concluded that PSL, TL and GC/MS methods are suitable for detection of irradiated samples and a combined method is recommendable for enhancing the reliability of detection results.
The detection characteristics of irradiated spices were investigated depending on radiation sources and doses by photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and Thermoluminescence (TL). 6 kinds of spices (turmeric, onion powder, red pepper, basil, parsley, black pepper) were irradiated at 0 to 10 kGy under ambient conditions by both a $^{60}Co$ gamma irradiator and an electron beam (EB) accelerator, respectively. The PSL analysis showed negative results for non-irradiated spices, while irradiated spices gave intermediate and positive value, which presented the limited potential of PSL technique. In TL measurement, TL glow curves on non-irradiated samples appeared at about $300^{\circ}C$ with low intensity. All irradiated samples were easily distinguishable through radiation-specific strong TL glow curves with maximum peak in range of $150{\sim}200^{\circ}C$. TL ratio ($TL_1/TL_2$) obtained by a re-irradiation step could verify the detection result of $TL_1$ glow curves, showing ratios lower than 0.1 in the non-irradiated sample and higher than 0.1 in irradiated ones. Therefore, in PSL measurement, the identification of irradiated spices showed more clear results in electron beam irradiated samples. TL analysis showed obvious difference between non-irradiated and irradiated samples in gamma ray and electron beam irradiated samples.
