This work was conducted to evaluate the hatching and growing performance of Korean native chicken (KNC) 3 strains crossbred. A total of 360 female pullets were produced from $\times$ (A), CL $\times$ C (B), CG $\times$ C (C) and CW $\times$ C (D) crossbred kept in National Institute of Animal Science, Korea. Hatchability of A, B, C and D were 69.8, 70.7, 75.5 and 77.4%, respectively. Livability were not significantly different by 20 weeks among 4 strains. Body weight B was high compared to other strains at 20 weeks. The feed conversion ratio of 4 strains was no significantly different among strains at 20 weeks. These results suggested the basic data that needed to develope the new strains.
For development of all male seed production at hatchery scale, a comparative study was made on the seed production traits of supermale (IT - t) and superfemale (IT - L1 ~) Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Supermales were crossed with normal females (XX- f) and the superfemales with normal males (XY - t ) or sex reversed males (XX- L1 t); progeny survival of these crossings and sex ratio were evaluated. Hatching success of the eggs, fertilized by the supermale was significantly lower than that by the normal male. Over 95-99 % progenies sired by crossing supermales with normal females were males, while 52-55 % progenies alone were males with the cross of normal males and normal females. Hatching success and survival of alevins were significantly higher for the progenies of the crosses between superfemales and sex reversed males than those resulting from the crosses between superfemales and normal males. However, there was no significant difference in the sex ratio among the progenies of these crosses. Therefore, crossings of superfemales with sex reversed males provide the highest percentage of survival and male progenies.
This study was carried out to investigate the life cycle of Cephonodes hylas (Linne), that is damaging to Gardenia jasminoides Ellis in the seedbed at Namhae during 1984 and 1985. Results are summarized as follows. The eggs were laid in mass on the leaf surface of the host plants. The oviposition period lasts for 26 days after late-May. The average number of eggs and average hatching rate were 20.36 and 97.61% , respectively. It takes 14-16 days until hatching. The egg shape was oval which its size was 1.01 mm in diameter and 1.48 mm in length. The body length of each larval instar from the 1st to the 5th were $3.52\pm$1.01, $6.46\pm$0.45, $13.19\pm$4.27, $24.08\pm$2.22 and $43.71\pm$5.62 mm, respectively. The average weight of each larval instar were $13.34\pm$2.41, $29.83\pm$6.88, $76.64\pm$31.31, $292.09\pm$107.70 and 2,$144.84\pm$760.70 mm, respectively. The larval period was observed from July to October, and total duration of larval stage was 116 days in which duration of each larval instar from the 1st to the 5th were 12, 36, 32, 16 and 20 days, respectively. During larval stage, a larvae feed on 17~18 seedlings. The 5th instar larvae built its place in soil for overwinter and became pupa. The body length of pupa was 33.6 mm and average weight was 2,032 mg Adult was emerged from overwintened pupa from mid through late-May in the followings year. The sex ratio of female was 42.82% and the color ratio of brown was 89.93%.

This study was conducted to compare the growth performances of three groups of commercial Korean native chickens (KNCs) including two strains of crossbreeds and H3 (Hanhyeop 3) from hatch to twelve weeks of age. (1A, 2A, and H3). A total of 468 one-day-old chicks were allocated in a completely randomized design with 15 replicates per treatment for the crossbreeds and 9 replicates per treatment for H3 (12 birds per cage). Commercial broiler diets (i.e., Week 0 - 5 crude protein [CP] 22.0%, metabolizable energy [ME] 3,025 kcal·kg-1; week 5 - 8 CP 20.0%, ME 3,100 kcal·kg-1; week 8 - 12 CP 19.0%, ME 3,150 kcal·kg-1) were provided according to the Korean Feeding Standard for Poultry on an ad-libitum basis with fresh clean water during the twelve-week period. Body weight gain and shank length (SL) were measured weekly until week 6 and bi-weekly during week 6 to 12. Compared to H3, the two crossbreed groups had a higher body weight (BW) on weeks 3 to 8; however, the bodyweight of H3 on week 10 was significantly higher than the other groups (p < 0.05). Moreover, the average daily feed intake (ADFI) of H3 was higher than that of the two crossbreed groups from hatching to 84 days except for week 3, and H3 showed a lower average daily gain (ADG) on weeks 3 and 10 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, H3 had a higher feed conversion ratio compared to another crossbreed chicken on weeks 1 to 8 and the last week after hatching. Among all the groups, there was no significant difference for shank length during the experimental period.
The investigated of survival rate, sex ratio, condition index, gonad development frequency, gonad index, fertilization rate, hatching rate and time required development of D shape larvae of the ark shell, Scapharca subcrenata. Survival rate was lower in heating group compared with control group (P < 0.05). Sex ratio (female:male) observed 1:0.97 in control group, 1:0.62 in heating group. Condition index was significantly higher in heating group than control group (P < 0.05) and higher increased more than water temperature $17^{\circ}C$ of heating group. Gonad development observed slow in control group but more than ripe stage 80% in heating group (21-28 day, $20^{\circ}C$). Gonad index was higher in heating group compared with control group (P < 0.05). Fertilization rate and hatching rate of the ark shell was observed $82.17{\pm}3.55%$ and $63.57{\pm}2.36%$, respectively. The time required development of D shape larvae of the ark shell was observed 15 hour after fertilization. The suggested that results of the ark shell by heating were effective sex maturation and normal egg development.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of bulking agents including cow manure, saw dust and rice straw in the ripening of leather sludge for vermistabilization. The changes of the waste properties for ripening time for 50 days were observed according to the various mixture ratios of leather sludge and bulking agents. The pH values of the mixture wastes were decreased from 7.5-8.0 to 6.4-7.3 with the ripening time for 50 days, and it was indifferent of the mixture ratio and type of the bulking agent. The initial value of oxidation-reduction potential(Eh) of the mixture waste was a negative(-)value indicating an unfavorable condition for earthworm life, but the values of Eh were increased with the ripening time. The increase rate of Eh value was proportional to the mixture ratio of bulking agents, but the increase rate for saw dust was higher than that of the cow manure and the rice straw. The value of alkalinity was also changed into the favorable range for earthworm after 50 days except for 10% of the mixture ratio of the bulking agents. When the mixture ratios of the bulking agents were increased from 10% to 40%, the growth characteristics of earthworms were increased from 31.7% to 95% for the survival rate, 103% to 225% for the liveweight increase rate and 32% to 91% for hatching rate of the cocoons. It can be concluded that the proper content of the bulking agents in the leather sludge to ensure effective vermistabilization was over 30%, when the mixture was ripened during 50 days. The contents of heavy metals in the ripened sludge were lower than the other regulatory standards for compost.

The aim of this study was to assess whether size-rank at the juvenile stage is associated with growth performance and sex ratio in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Juveniles (mean body weight, $8.8{\pm}0.9\;g$) were selected from two age groups, with the high size-rank group (HSRG) fish in the upper 19.3-67.3% of 104 days post-hatching (dph) age group and the low size-rank group (LSRG) fish in the lower 9.0-55.7% of 116 dph age group. Triplicate groups of 100 fish were reared over 32 weeks. A heavier final body weight was observed in the HSRG ($360{\pm}12\;g$) compared to the LSRG ($315{\pm}9\;g$, P<0.05), whereas no differences in feed intake, feeding efficiency, and mortality were seen between the experimental groups. The percentage of females was significantly higher in the HSRG (51.7%) than in the LSRG (30.8%, P<0.05). In addition, a remarkable increase in growth was recorded in females, indicating that the relative frequency of females increased with a body weight increase. The results suggest that high size-rank juvenile olive flounder have better growth performance and a higher percentage of females, because females start growing faster than males before size grading occurs.

An attempt was made to identify superior bivoltine silkworm hybrid suitable for monsoon and spring season of Uttar Pradesh. Breeds with superior cocoon characters and their more popularity in an area were major parameters on basis of which breeds from different regions were selected. Six bivoltine hybrids of silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) of different geographical regions were reared in monsoon (three hybrids) and spring season (three hybrids) during 2000-2002 i.e., for three years at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow. Their performances were analyzed statistically for nine characters. The analysis made on a number of traits viz., hatching percentage, larval duration, pupation rate, yield /10000 larvae (by no.), yield /10000 larvae (by weight), cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio, showed the superiority of one bivoltine hybrid out of the three bivoltine hybrids studied in each season. $SH6{\times}{NB_4}{D_2}$ was found to be superior in major cocoon parameters in both the seasons i.e., monsoon and spring season of Uttar Pradesh.
Effect of topical application with 5, 10 and 15${\mu}$g/ml thyroxine on the pre-cocoon, cocoon, postcocoon and silk improvement were studied in bivoltine silkworm NB18 breed of B. mori L. Thyroxine was applied independently on alternate days to silkworm of IV and V instar larvae. The treatment of all different concentrations resulted in a significant increase in commercial characters like larval weight, silkgland weight, cocooning percentage, female cocoon weight and its shell weight and male cocoon shell weight and its ratio, cocoon dimension, length of the filament and its weight and oviposition. However, there was no significant change in larvel weight in 5${\mu}$g/ml treated group and larval duration was significantly decrease. But moth emergence percentage and hatching percentage did not show any significant change when compared with that of carrier control.
The life history and development of Tetrastichus sp. parasitizing fallwebworm pupa in Korea were studied. The mean lifetime fecundity was 94.7 with a maximum of 125, and the portion of female progeny averaged 90.3%. A male and a female lived for an average of 19.8${\pm}$4.5 and 21.7${\pm}$4.2 days, respectively. The duration of development for each stage was as follows: egg, 2 d; the 1st instar larva, 2${\pm}$1 d; the 2nd instar larva, 2${\pm}$1 d: the 3rd instar larva, 3${\pm}$1 d; the 4th instar larva, 6${\pm}$2 d; and pupa, 8${\pm}$2 d. Total developmental duration from hatching of the larva to adult emergence required 21.1${\pm}$3.7 d, and females took 1-2 days more than males in the incubator (28$^{\circ}C$, 70% RH, and 16:8 LD).
