  • We analysised the effect of harmonics on electric machines of substation power system barred on quantitatively measured harmonics and proposed the methods for prevention of harmonics through checking on transformer, rectifier and cable's capacities against harmonics with reference to KEPCO's electricity service standard. In order to analysis harmoninics of silicon rectifier that is power source in DC substation, computer simulations for a substation with TR of high voltage distribution switchboard are performed. Simulation results show that the total harmonic distortion factor becomes smaller for TR primary and receiving points in order rather than silicon rectifier which is harmonic generation source so that the harmonics generated frets each rectifier are outflowed to power supply and high voltage distribution switchboard The result of higher distortion factors of voltage and current for rectifier with 100% load than those with 50 % and 30% indicates that the waveform of voltage and current for the real substation power system at the office-going and the closing hours with heavy loads might be more distorted. As proposed methods for harmonic reduction, the conventional 6 pulse-type for substation is required to be replaced by 12 pulse-type for reduction of 5th and 7th harmonics. The active filter rather than the passive filter is more effective due to severe variance of rectifier loads, but the high cost is price to be paid. In view of installation area and costs, the use of 12 pulse-type transformer is desirable and then the parallel transformer and the rectifier within the substation must be replaced at the same time. Other substations with parallel feeder can use 6 pulse-type transformer.

  • Heavy chemical industries have nonlinear loads including electrolyzers. The electrolysis consists of AC-BC converters which generate harmonic currents and create distortions on the sinusoidal voltage of the power system. This paper provides in depth an analysis on harmonics field measurement for the electrolyzer loads, adding a single-tuned filter at the customer bus for reducing harmonic distortion and harmonic assessment by the international harmonic standards IEC 61000-3-6 and IEEE Std. 519. The EDSA program was used as a simulation tool for the case study.

  • In this paper, LC output filters are designed to reduce output harmonics and harmonic analysis are peformed. Generally, multilevel inverters are used in high power application and operates with low switching frequency, which, in turn, generates large output harmonics. Output filters we used to reduce output harmonics. The design approach to reduce output harmonics of the 31eve1 multilevel inverter is discussed and DSP(TMS320C31) is used for the digital control of the system. The design example is given. The designed system is verified by simulation and experiment.

  • The utility and many customers employ capacitor banks(STATCON so called at the utility) to help control the power factor(customers) or voltage(the utility) by supplying reactive power to inductive loads. This paper presents analysis of transient overvoltages and harmonics due to utility STATCON switching. One simple and inexpensive means of limiting the voltage magnification transient and reducing harmonics is to switch the capacitor banks on a few minutes after the STATCON has been switched. Simulation results used the EDSA software package show the effects of decreased the transient voltage and harmonic reduction at the customer. And also harmonic limits based on the well-known international harmonic standards IEEE 519 and IEC 1000 are evaluated for the customer.

  • A new modified command voltage of the third harmonics injected PWM inverter is proposed to control the inverter in overmodulation mode. The third harmonics injected PWM has a extended linear region compared with the sine PWM. But it still has a maximum voltage about 90% compared with the six step inverter. By analyzing the relationship between the modulation index and the peak of the fundamental component of the modified reference voltage, we can settle the problem in over modulation mode without iteration. Then we can increase the maximum fundamental component of the third harmonics injected PWM inverter comparative to six-step inverter continuously in over modulation mode. The simulation results of the inverter-induction motor system shows the validity of this method.

  • In order to meet the harmonics standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 the output quality of a grid connected inverter should satisfy a certain level of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) value. However, the output quality of an inverter gets degraded due to the grid voltage harmonics, the dead time effects and the nonlinearity of the switches, which all contributes to a higher THD value of the output. In order to meet the required THD value for the inverter output under the distorted grid condition the use of harmonic controller is essential. In this paper a novel feedforward harmonic compensation method is proposed in order to effectively eliminate the low order harmonics in the inverter current to the grid. In the proposed method, unlike the conventional harmonic control methods, the hamonic components are directly compensated by the feedforward terms generated by the PR controller with the grid current in the stationary frame. The proposed method is simple in implementation but powerful in eliminating the harmonics from the output. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified through the PSIM simulation and the experiments with a 5kW single phase grid connected inverter.

  • This paper proposes a controller design of a distributed source inverter in stand-alone mode or grid-connected mode to compensate the current or voltage harmonics caused by local nonlinear load. The PR-based multi loop controller has been used to improve the dynamic performance of the system and to compensate the output voltage or grid current harmonics. The multi-loop controller consists of an outer current controller and an inner voltage controller for the output voltage control in stand-alone mode. In grid-connected mode, an outer current controller is added to the output voltage controller for the grid current control. The design performance of each controller is described through the Root locus and Bode plot of the transfer functions. The validity of the proposed control algorithm and design parameters has been verified through the PSiM simulation and experimental results.

  • Most power system loads and delivery apparatus are inductive in nature and therefore operate at a lagging power factor. Applying capacitor banks to a customer will result in a power factor correction and other benefits such as VAR support, increased voltage, reduced power losses, and reduced billing charges. Also there can be power quality problems as a result of adding capacitor banks. The most common are harmonics. This paper provides an in depth analysis on the power factor correction and harmonics reduction of capacitor bank installed at a customer. The EDSA program was used as a simulation tool for the case study.

  • The prevalence of electronic devices in our modern life is accompanied with the generation of harmonics caused by the nonlinear characteristic load. Especially, the employment of LED have brought the rapid use of SMPS. SMPS is used for supplying the constant DC electric power to the LED display board, but it has a big problem which gives birth of harmonics causing by its high-speed switching. measurement HIOKI 3196 equipment to solve these harmonics were measured. In this study, we are LED Display Board Load Measuring the impedance response with $X_L$ changes for removing harmonics in the measured. And we adopted the suitable passive filter by the impedance response characteristic obtained in the $X_L$ variation experiments. We are trying to deeply the application of passive harmonic filter characteristics that generation in the LED Display Board through EDSA LED simulation.

  • The output current of the Grid Connected Inverter (GCI) can be polluted with harmonics mainly due to i) dead time in switches, ii) non-linearity of switches, iii) grid harmonics, and iv) DC link fluctuation. Therefore, it is essential to design the robust Harmonic Compensation (HC) technique for the improvement of output current quality and fulfill the IEEE 1547 Total harmonics Distortion (THD) limit i.e. <5%. The conventional harmonic techniques often are complex in implementation due to their i) additional hardware needs, ii) complex structure, iii) difficulty in tuning of parameters, iv) current controller compatibility issues, and v) higher computational burden. In this paper, to eliminate the harmonics from the GCI output current, a novel Digital Lock-In Amplifier (DLA) based harmonic detection is proposed. The advantage of DLA is that it extracts the harmonic information accurately, which is further compensated by means of PI controller in feed forward manner. Moreover, the proposed HC method does not require additional hardware and it works with any current controller reference frame. To show the effectiveness of the proposed HC method a 5kW GCI prototype built in laboratory. The output current THD is achieved less than 5% even with 10% load, which is verified by simulation and experiment.
