  • Recently, multilevel H-bridge inverters have become popular in medium to high power ac drive applications. One of significant advantages of them is low harmonic contents in their input line currents thanks to the transformer with multiple phase-shifted secondary windings. This paper attempts to provide basic guidelines for the design of the phase shifting transformer windings and theoretical analysis of input line current harmonics of H-bridge inverters. The part II is devoted to the analysis of the harmonic characteristics of the input line current, providing mathematical background for the equidistant phase-shifting angle distribution policy for harmonic elimination.

  • The demands of minimizing the reactive power and reducing. the current harmonics are increasing nowadays. The inverter airconditioner needs high power and it operates with wide load range. Conventionally, ah huge LC passive filter is used in airconditioner to improve the P.F and to reduce current harmonics which doesn't gives good results. In this paper, a design of active power factor correction(PFC) circuit for inverter air conditioner is described. To improve the P.F and to reduce the THD, an average current controlled active PFC is designed and tested. Experimental results show that the developed system achieves almost unity P.F and low THD for all load range.

  • This paper deals with PWM patterns for harmonic reduction in inverter fed traction motors and the gear changing techniques for the variable speed drive of traction motor. GTOs are used as switching device of inverter because traction motor is a large load. To derive PWM rattern which can minimize the harmonics with the limited switching frequency, the output current and torque characteristic of SPWM and SHE PWM was analyzed. GTO inverter used for traction motor drive includes harmonics in the output current and torque by the limitation of switching frequency. However, the hybrid PWM method that adopt SPWM in the range of low frequency and SHE PWM in upper frequency range can achieve less harmonic characteristics in GTO inverters. If the traction motor is driven in variable speed by the proposed PWM pattern, 7 times of gear changing is needed. At the instant of the mode change, magnetic flux and torque may be altered and the large current flow. To reduce such an undesirable transient behavior, it is also presented the technique for the gear changing of inverter fed traction motor drive operated with the hybrid PWM. The results are verified by simulations and experiments.

  • This paper deals with a new wave shaping technique for cost effective harmonic mitigation in ac-dc converter feeding Vector Controlled Induction Motor Drives(VCIMD's) for improving power quality at the point of common coupling(PCC). The proposed harmonic mitigator consists of a polygon connected autotransformer based twelve-pulse ac-dc converter and a small rating passive shunt filter tuned for $11^{th}$ harmonic frequency. This ac-dc converter eliminates the most dominant $5^{th},\;7^{th},\;and\;11^{th}$ harmonics and imposes the reduction of other higher order harmonics from the ac main current, thereby improving the power quality at ac mains. The design of autotransformer is carried out for the proposed ac-dc converter to make it suitable for retrofit applications, where presently a 6-pulse ac-dc converter is used. The effect of load variation on VCIMD is also studied to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ac-dc converter in a wide operating range of the drive. Experimental results obtained on the developed laboratory prototype of the proposed harmonic mitigator are used to validate the model and design of the ac-dc converter.

  • This paper analyses the mathematical model and control strategies of a Hybrid Active Power Filter with Injection Circuit (IHAPF). The control strategy based on the load harmonic current detection is selected. A novel control method for a IHAPF, which is based on the analyzed control mathematical model, is proposed. It consists of two closed-control loops. The upper closed-control loop consists of a single fuzzy logic controller and the IHAPF model, while the lower closed-control loop is composed of an Adaptive Network based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) controller, a Neural Generalized Predictive (NGP) regulator and the IHAPF model. The purpose of the lower closed-control loop is to improve the performance of the upper closed-control loop. When compared to other control methods, the simulation and experimental results show that the proposed control method has the advantages of a shorter response time, good online control and very effective harmonics reduction.

  • This paper proposes a novel scheme for the current controller for the grid-side converter (GSC) of permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind turbines to eliminate the high-order harmonics in the grid currents under grid voltage disturbances. The voltage unbalance and harmonics in three-phase systems cause grid current distortions. In order to mitigate the input current distortions, multi-loop current controllers are applied, where the positive-sequence component is regulated by proportional-integral (PI) controllers, and the negative-sequence and high-order harmonic components are regulated by proportional-resonance (PR) controllers. For extracting the positive/negative-sequence and harmonic components of the grid voltages and currents without a phase delay or magnitude reduction, composite observers are applied, which give faster and more precise estimation results. In addition, an active damping method using PR controllers to damp the grid current component of the resonant frequency is employed to improve the operating stability of VSCs with inductor-capacitor-inductor (LCL) filters. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm to generate a reference signal for an active power filter using a sliding-window FFT operation to improve the steady-state performance of the active power filter. In the proposed algorithm the sliding-window FFT operation is applied to the load current to generate the reference value for the compensating current. The magnitude and phase-angle for each order of harmonics are respectively averaged for 14 periods. Furthermore, the phase-angle delay for each order of harmonics passing through the controller is corrected in advance to improve the compensation performance. The steady-state and transient performance of the proposed algorithm was verified through computer simulations and experimental work with a hardware prototype. A single-phase active power filter with the proposed algorithm can offer a reduction in THD from 75% to 4% when it is applied to a non-linear load composed of a diode bridge and a RC circuit. The active power filter with the proposed reference generation method shows accurate harmonic compensation performance compared with previously developed methods, in which the THD of source current is higher than 5%.

  • This paper proposes a new THD reduction algorithm for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) with offset voltage injection operated in nearest level modulation (NLM). High voltage direct current (HVDC) is actively introduced to the grid connection of offshore wind powers, and this paper deals with a voltage generation technique with an MMC for wind power generation. In the proposed method, third harmonic voltage is added for reducing the THD. The third harmonic voltage is adjusted so that each of the pole voltage magnitudes maintains a constant value with a maximum number of (N+1) levels, where N is the number of sub-modules per arm. By using the proposed method, the THD of the output voltage is mitigated without increasing the switching frequency. In addition, the proposed method has advantageous characteristics such as simple implementation. As a part of this study, this paper compares the THD results of the conventional method and the proposed method with offset voltage injection to reduce the THD. In this paper, simulations have been carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, and the proposed method is implemented by a HILS (Hardware in the Loop Simulation) system. The obtained results show agreement with the simulation results. It is confirmed that the new scheme achieved the maximum level output voltage and improved the THD quality.

  • Computer Loads can be found in all of modern society. The switching mode power supplies used in personal computers are major sources of harmonic currents. Harmonic currents can cause lots of harmonic problems such as disruption in computer performance. A series resonant filter is very effective in harmonic reduction for personal computer loads. Voltage sags are short duration reductions in rms voltage. The main causes of voltage sags at faults, motor starting, and transformer energizing. Personal computers are another example of devices sensitive to voltage sags. A serious voltage sag at the terminals way lead mis-operation of the equipment. This paper presents an in depth analysis to evaluate the effect of harmonics reduction based on the IEC 61000-3-2 and the effect of voltage sag using ITI curve by applying a series resonant filter for personal computer loads.

  • This paper presents a Interleaved Buck Converter(IBC) system with Random PWM to reduce electromagnetic noise by harmonics. Swithced mode power supply generally controlled by high switching frequency have a electromagnetic interference(EMI) issue due to the high-voltage/high-current switching to regulate the voltage in buck converter. To solve the problem. we present a novel IBC system with PRBS. IBC system has two active switches with 180 phase difference that controll the cicuit with two PWM signal. IBC system may be disadventageous for the cost due to the addtion of one set of switch, but it has adventages of power distribution, current ripple cancellation, fast transient response, and passive component size reduction. To verify the validity of study, simulation program has been bulit using PSIM and the experimental results of IBC system using RPWM was compared with the conventinal PWM and randomized PWM.
