  • A study was performed to investigate the properties of base metal and weldment for two HSLA steels and one HY-100 steel. Tensile, yield strength and elongation of HSLA-A steel were superior to those of HY-100 steel and yield ratios in HSLA-A and HSLA-B steels were higher than HY-100 steel owing to the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase. The impact energy of HSLA-A steel was greater at all aging temperatures than that of HY-100 steel. HSLA-A and HY-100 steels had low impact transition temperature of about -l$25^{\circ}C$ and high upper shelf energy, The peak hardness of weldment in HSLA-A, HSLA-B and HY-100 steels were Hv 299, Hv 275 and Hv 441, respectively. The hardenability of HY-100 steel was largest due to the higher amount of carbon. The y-groove test showed that HSLA steels had superior resistance to cold cracking. Toughness of weld joint at the F. L. and F. L. +1mm in HSLA-A was almost the same as HY-100, but those at F. L.+3mm and F. L.+5mm was greater in HSLA-A steel.

  • To ensure driver safety, high-strength steel pipes are utilized in the chassis and internal structures design of automobiles. ERW(electric resistance welding) pipes, fabricated through welding at joints using electrical resistance, form a Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) during the welding process. Due to characteristics such as increased hardness and reduced ductility compared to the base material, HAZ poses challenges in finite element analysis (FEA) for pipe shapes. In this study, for FEA considering HAZ properties, mechanical properties were measured through uniaxial tensile testing and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques after specimen fabrication. These measurements were validated using reverse engineering methods. Furthermore, hardness measurements and gaussian functions were employed to ascertain the hardness distribution within the HAZ, serving as a basis for subdividing the HAZ and modeling the pipe shape. To validate the effectiveness of the HAZ modeling approach, models were interpreted incorporating only base material properties and models incorporating average-calculated HAZ properties. Comparative analysis was performed, revealing that the model subdividing the HAZ based on hardness measurements closely approximated experimental values. This validation offered a methodology for HAZ modeling in FEA.

  • Stellite 12 alloy-powders were overlaid on 410 stainless steel valve seat using plasma transferred arc(PTA) process. Variation of the microstructure, hardness, wear and corrosion of overlaid deposit with current change was investigated. The deposit showed hypoeutectic microstructure, which was consisted of primary cobalt dendrite and networked $M_7C_3$ type eutectic carbides. As current increased, the amount of eutectic carbide decreased and its dendritic secondary arm spacing increased. Hardness of the deposit was decreased with increase of current. Stress relief heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ for two hours resulted in slight increase of hardness in the deposit and showed uniform hardness distribution in base metal without any hardened layer in HAZ. Specific wear decreased with increase of sliding distance. The deposit of high hardness with a lot of eutectic carbide showed relatively low specific wear. Initial corrosion current density of the deposit in 0.1N sulfuric acid was lower than those of 410 stainless steel, and showed a little variation with PTA current.

  • In this study, the steel material for shipbuilding(LR-A class) was used, and FCAW was taken advantage of 3G attitude and they are welded by different welding ways. As a result of analyzing wave with welding monitoring system, the stable values are obtained which are the first floor(electronic current 164~182 A, voltage 24 V), the second floor(electronic current 174~190 A, voltage 22~25 V), the third floor(electronic current 158~188 A, voltage 22~25 V), and fourth floor(electronic current 172~184 A, voltage 22~25 V), at this time, the stable wave standard deviation and changing coefficient could be obtained. When the welding testing through nondestructive inspection was analyzed know defect of welding, there was no defect of welding in A, D, E, but some porosities in B, and slag conclusion near the surface in C, because the length of arc was not accurate, and the electronic current and voltage was not stable. After observing the change of heat affect zone through micro testing, each organization of floor formed as Grain Refinement, so welding part was fine, the distance of heat affect zone is getting wider up to change the values of the electronic current and voltage. As a result of degree of hardness testing, the hardness orders were the heat affect zone(HAZ), Welding Zone(WZ), and Base Metal(BM). When the distribution of degree of hardness is observed. B is the highest degree of hardness The reason why heat effect zone is higher than welding zone and base metal, welding zone is boiled over melting point($1539^{\circ}C$) and it starts to melt after the result of analysis through metal microscope, so we can know that delicate tissue is created at the welding zone. Therefore, in order to get the optimal conditions of the welding, the proper current of the welding and voltage is needed. Furthermore the precise work of welding is required.

  • This paper deals with the various mechanical properties and fatigue strength in the FRW1 (friction welded interface) of high speed steel (HSS-Co) to SM55C through the tensile test, hardness test and fatigue test. The data of FRW specimens are also compared with those of the base materials (HSS-Co and SM55C steel). Three kinds of specimens used in this study are the friction welded joints, HSS-Co and SM55C carbon steel with circumferential notch, saw notch and smooth, respectively. It is confirmed that the applied welding conditions are optimum methods in order to minimize the heat affected zone (HAZ) and hardness distribution at the HAZ. The fatigue strengths at N = 10$^{6}$ cycles of smooth, circumferential notch and saw notch specimens in the FRW joints are about 299.2 MPa, 123.8 MPa and 247.5 MPA, respectively. The fatigue strength of the friction welded joints is almost equal to that of the SM55C carbon steel in the optimum welding conditions. The fatigue cracks initiated at the welded zone are propagated along the side of SM55C steel.

  • This study considers how the fatigue behavior and probabilistic properties of SAE1055 steel are related to its hardness level. SAE1055 steel was heat-treated using induction hardening. Five types of specimens were prepared (A: base material, B: through hardened material with HV390, C: through hardened material with HV510, D: through hardened material with HV700, and E: surface hardened material with HV700). Fatigue tests were performed under a stress ratio of R = -1 using a 4-point rotary bending fatigue tester. The fatigue behaviors were greatly influenced by the hardness, but the fatigue limit did not increase over a hardness of HV510. In addition, the effect of the hardness level on the failure mechanism was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope. The probabilistic properties of the fatigue life were investigated using a probabilistic S-N approach, and the effect of the hardness level on these properties was evaluated using a residue analysis.

  • The fatigue test was carried out to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of fire resistance steel for frame structure and heat affected zone (HAZ) by the one side Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). In this paper, the fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated with the compact tension specimen of base metal and the HAZ according to chemical composition and rolling end temperature, respectively. And the acoustic emission signals obtained from the fatigue test were analyzed by the time-frequency analysis method as a nondestructive evaluation. Main results obtained are summarized as follows; The hardness was appeared softening phenomenon that weld metal and HAZ are lower than that of base metal. Fatigue life of welded specimen was longer than that of base metal. m was 3~4.5 in base metal and 3.8~5.8 in HAZ. The main frequency range of acoustic emission signal analyzed from time-frequency method is different with the range by noise and crack. Also, it could be classified that it was also generated by fracture mechanics of dimple, inclusion etc.

  • The effect of Post Weld Heat Treatment(PWHT) of RE36 steel for marine structure was investigated with parameters such as micro-vickers hardness, corrosion potential and corrosion current density of weld metal(WM), base metal(BM) and heat affected zone(HAZ), and both Al alloy anode generating current and Al alloy anode weight loss quantity etc. Hardness of post-weld heat treated BM, WM and HAZ is lower than that of As-welded condition of each region. However, hardness of HAZ was the highest among those three parts regardless of PWHT temperature and corrosion potential of WM was the highest among those three parts without regard to temperature and corrosion potential of WM was the highest among those three parts without regard to PWHT temperature. The amplitude of corrosion potential difference of each other three parts at PWHT temperature $550^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$ are smaller than that of three parts by As-welded condition and corrosion current density obtained by PWHT was also smaller than that of As-welded condition. Eventually, it was known that corrosion resistance was increased by PWHT. However both Al anode generating current and anode weight loss quantity were also decreased by PWHT compare to As-welded condition when RE36 steel is cathodically protected by Al anode. Therefore, it is suggested that the optimum PWHT temperature with increasing corrosion resistance and cathodic protection effect is $550^{\circ}C$.
