  • This study examined the relationship between the level of hardiness and self-care agency of persons with a colostomy. The purpose of the study was to explore the effect of hardiness on self-care agency of persons with a colostomy and to identity factors influencing on. The ultimate goal was to help nurses improve the person's self-care agency and to contribute theoretical base for the planning of supportive nursing interventions to increase the level of self care. The subjects for the study consisted of 43 persons aged above eighteen below seventy had had Miles operation and permanent colostomy. The data were collected from July, 1998 to September 15, 1998. The instruments used for this study were the Health-Related Hardiness (Pollock, 1984) and the Self-carer As Inventory Scale(Genden & Taylor, 1988). The Self-Carer As Inventory translated by So Hyang-sook and was modified by author of this study. The data were analysed by using SAS computerlized program and included number, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. Hardiness was significantly related to Self-care agency(r=-0.531. p=0.0002). That is, the higher the hardiness, the higher the level of Self-care agency. 2. In the relationship between general characteristics and traits of persons with a colostomy and hardiness were significant difference in monthly income (F=2.79, p=0.03), problem in stoma management (F=3.29, p=0.01). 3. In the relationship between general characteristics and traits of persons with a colostomy and Self-care agency were significant difference in monthly income (F=2.93, p=0.03), problem in stoma management(F=2.93, p=0.01). Therefore, in order to increase the level of Self-care agency of ostomate Nurses should be helpful to provide them with hardiness training to strengthen their control, commitment and challenge(subconcepts of hardiness).

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to meta-analyze the effects of hardiness on health-related variables. Method: After review of 19 studies performed by Korean nurses, research variables, statistical data(r or F), and other methodological data were extracted and coded. Research variables were categorized under 5 groups such as health-related behavior, well-being, adaptation, stress, and support according to conceptual similarity. Using SAS program, 20 research variables and 34 effect sizes were calculated after eliminating heterogeneous data by Q-test, Results: Effects of hardiness on whole research variables was .512 and ranged from .322 to .643 by categories. The greatest effect was obtained from well-being category, whereas the smallest effect from stress category. All effect sizes were statistically significant. But fail-safe numbers were small and failed to achieve reasonable tolerance level. Conclusion: Results of meta-analysis indicated that hardiness has a moderate effect on health-related variables. But for improving the reliability of the results by minimizing publication bias, the more hardiness studies should be done.

  • The problem addressed by this study were to explore the effect of hardiness on psychosocial adjustment of persons with a colostomy and to identify factors which influence that psychosocial adjustment. The purpose was to suggest a theoretical base for the planning of supportive nursing interventions to increase the level of adjustment. Among members of the Korea Ostomy Association, 34 subjects who had undergone colostomy from March, 1990 to March, 1991 were selected as the sample. Data were collected from April 8 to May 8, 1991 using a mailed questionnaire. The instruments used for this study were the Health -Related Hardiness Scale(Pollock, 1984) and the Psychosocial Adjustment to illness Scale (Derogatis, 1975). ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and Stepswise Multiple Regression were used for data analysis. The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. Hardiness was significantly related to psychosocial adjustment(p=0.009). That is, the higher the hardiness, the higher the level of psychosocial adjustment. 2. Among the demographic variables, only economic level was significantly related to the level of psychosocial adjustment. (p=0.005). 3. The important factors influencing the level of psychosocial adjustment of persons with a colostomy were economic level, commitment, challenge (subconcepts of hardiness). Therefore, in order to increase the level of the psychosocial adjustment, it might be helpful to provide them with hardiness training to strengthen their commitment and their challenge.

  • Purpose: This correlation study was designed to examine the relationships among reported violence experience, hardiness, and job satisfaction of nurses in an emergency department and to identify the factors that predict their job satisfaction. Methods: The study was conducted using a convenience sample of one hundred and fifteen nurses from nine hospitals. Data were collected using structured questionnaires including Assault Response Questionnaire (Jung, 2008), Dispositional Resilience Scale-15 (Bartone, 1995) and job satisfaction Questionnaire (Yun, 2004). Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Results: Hardiness and job satisfaction were statistically significant positive correlation (r=.44, p<.001). Further, there was a negative correlation between response to violence experiences and job satisfaction (r=-.33, p<.001) and between hardiness and response to violence experiences (r=-.41, p<.001). Emotional response and physiological responses of violence experience and hardiness were significant predictors of job satisfaction, and explained 29.6% of the total variance. Conclusion: Previous experiences with violence were an important factor which contribute to lower job satisfaction as reported by emergency department nurses. However it was also noted that hardiness was an important factor that could be used to improve job satisfaction of emergency department nurses.

  • Purpose: This study aims to examine the effects of occupational stress, coping flexibility, and hardiness on burnout in nurses and the factors influencing these relationships. Methods: Convenience sampling was used in this study to engage a total of 122 nurses from two general hospitals. A structured questionnaire was used to assess the nurses' occupational stress, coping flexibility, hardiness, and burnout. The collected data were analyzed with regard to descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression by using the SPSS program. Results: There were differences in the extent of burnout in nurses depending on their age, marital status, educational level, and religion. Burnout and occupational stress were positively correlated, whereas there was a negative correlation between burnout and hardiness. For the factors influencing nurses' burnout, occupational stress was identified to be most influential, followed by hardiness, total clinical career, religion, and working unit. Conclusion: To decrease burnout in nurses, there is a need for developing and deploying programs which can reduce their occupational stress and enhance hardiness.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the factors that influence parenting stress, including hardiness, parent-child interactions, and social support, to provide basic data for developing a program to reduce parenting stress in North Korean refugee mothers. Methods: A descriptive study design was used. Data were collected between September and December 2021, and 123 North Korean refugee mothers participated. Results: The mean scores were 69.42 out of 135 for hardiness, 48.45 out of 144 for interactions, 47.32 out of 90 for social support, and 51.84 out of 90 for parenting stress. The parental distress score was higher than that of child-related stress. Hardiness was significantly related to North Korean refugee mothers' parenting stress. Multiple regression analysis indicated that the explanatory power for hardiness and the number of supporters was approximately 19% for parenting stress (F=6.84, p<.001). As such, the factors with a relatively strong influence on parenting stress were hardiness (β=-.40, p<.001) and having four or more supporters (β=-.27, p=.027). Conclusion: This study's findings suggest the need to identify ways to increase North Korean refugee mothers' psychological hardiness and encourage them to extend their sources of social support and enhance their style of parenting.
