  • Laser surface hardening process is the method of hardening surface by inducing rapid self quenching of laser injected area through transfer of surface heat to inside after rapid heating of laser injected area only by high density energy heat source. This surface treatment method does not involve virtually any thermal deformation by heat treatment nor accompanies any other process after surface hardening treatment. In addition, allowing local machining, this method is a surface treatment method suitable for die with complicated shape. In this study, die material cast iron was surface-treated by using high power diode laser with beam profile suitable for heat treatment. Since the shapes of die differ by press die process, specimens were heat-treated separately on plane and corner depending on the applied parts. At this time, corner heat treatment was done with optic head inclined at $10^{\circ}$. As a result, corner heat treatment easily involves concentration of heat input due to limitation of heat transfer route by the shapes compared with plane part, so the treatment accomplished hardening at faster conveying speed than plane heat treatment.

  • In recent years, industrial demands for superior mechanical properties of powder metallurgy steel components with low cost are rapidly growing. Sinter hardening that combines sintering and heat treatment in continuous one step is cost-effective. The cooling rate during the sinter hardening process dominates material microstructures, which finally determine the mechanical properties of the parts. This research establishes a numerical model of the relation between various cooling rates and microstructures in a sinter hardenable material. The evolution of a martensitic phase in the treated microstructure during end quench tests using various cooling media of water, oil, and air is predicted from the cooling rate, which is influenced by cooling conditions, using the finite element method simulations. The effects of the cooling condition on the microstructure of the sinter hardening material are found. The obtained limiting size of the sinter hardening part is helpful to design complicate shaped components.

  • The hardening and the constitutive equation based on the crystal plasticity are introduced for the numerical simulation of hemispherical sheet metal forming. For calculating the deformation and the stress of the crystal, Taylor's model of the crystalline aggregate is employed. The hardening is evaluated by using the Taylor factor, the critical resolved shear stress of the slip system, and the sum of the crystallographic shears. During the hemispherical forming process, the texture of the sheet metal is evolved by the plastic deformation of the crystal. By observing the texture evolution of the BCC sheet, the texture evolution of the sheet is traced during the forming process. Deformation texture of the BCC sheet is represented by using the pole figure. The comparison of the strain distribution and punch force in the hemispherical forming process between crystal plasticity and experiment shows the verification of the crystal-based formulation and the accuracy of the hardening and constitutive equation obtained from the crystal plasticity.

  • In general, Light-hardening polymer was used UV nanoimprint technology. A light-hardening polymer was had the problem of poor hardness, durability. In order to overcome the problem of polymer, inter change optical glass. However glass is very manufacture and a lowering of standars transmittance. In order to glass recover was necessary polishing process. The process is magnetorheological fluids polishing. MR polishing has been developed as a new precision finishing technique to obtain a fine surface. Hence, Magnetorheological fluids has been used for micro polishing to get micro parts. This polishing process guarantees high polishing quality by controlling the fluid density electrically. The applied material in experiments is fused silica glass. Fused silica glass is widely used in the optical field because of high degree of purity. For MR polishing experiments, MR fluid was composed with DI-water, carbonyl iron and nano slurry ceria. The wheel speed and electric current were chosen as the variables for analyzing the characteristics of MR polishing process. Outstanding surface roughness of Ra=1.58nm was obtained on the fused silica glass specimen. And originally glass transmittance was recover on the fused silica glass.

  • Induction hardening process of tubular drive shaft for automobile is simulated by combining the thermal, mechanical, electro-magnetic and metallurgical analysis models. Various material properties for each analysis model are obtained in a consistent way via material properties calculation software, JMatPro®. To consider the scanning process of induction heating, boundary element method is adopted for electro-magnetic field calculation. The distribution of temperature, stress and phase volume fraction are tracked out through the whole process and the effect of scanning velocity is reviewed. The analysis result shows that the critical principal stress is developed at the phase boundary where martensite is formed.

  • In a plastically deformed body the formation of a shear band is widely observed in the engineering materials during rapidly forming process for a thermally rate-sensitive material. The localized shear bond stems from evolution of a narrow region in which intensive plastic flow occurs. The shear band often plays as a precursor of the ductile fracture during a forming process. The objectives of this study are to investigate the localization behaivor by using numerical method thus predict the failure. In this work the implicit finite difference scheme is preformed due to the ease of covergence and the numerical stability. This study is based on an analysised material with hardening as well as thermally softening behavior which includes isotropy strain hardening. Furthermore this paper suggests that an anticipated and suggested a kinematic hardening constitutive equation be requried to predicte a more accurate strain level wherein a shear band occurs.

  • This paper presents the experimental study on hardening process of high-strength and high-flowable concrete. The experiments were performed to investigate any unfavorable construction situations since the actual concrete placement has been scheduled in cold weather period, so that the high quality concrete construction is convinced to be successfully carried out. The tests were conducted using 600nm and 1000nm height of steel tube to simulate the practical concrete filled steel tube columns according to the following variables as: the categories of chemical admixtures, curing temperatures and curing schemes. The test results were analyzed in terms of hardening speed, internal heat of hydration and history of strength gain. This paper emphasizes the importance of curing schemes on durability and the use of hardening accelerators on strength gain.

  • To apply induction hardening method to a press die having 3-D free surface, the induction hardening tool moves on a press die above 1~2mm gap with constant velocity. Since the induction hardening process requires its own hardening path for each die, a direct teaching method which generates working path directly guided by operators is more suitable than an offline method using CAD/CAM data.   • In laser heat treatment process of steels, the thin layer of substrate is rapidly heated to the austenitizing temperature and subsequently cooled at a very fast rate due to the self-quenching effect. Consequently, it is transformed to martensitic structure which has low magnetic permeability. This observation facilitates the use of a sensor measuring the change of electromagnetic field induced by the hardening layer. In this paper, the eddy-current electromagnetic field is analyzed by a finite element method. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate how the electrical impedance of the sensor's sensing coil varies with the change in permeability. To achieve this, a numerical model is formulated, taking into consideration the hardening depth, distance of the sensor from the hardened surface and the frequency driving the sensor. The results obtained by numerical simulation show that the eddy-current measurement method can feasibly be used to measure the changing hardening depth within the frequency range from 10 kHz to 50 kHz.

  • Bake hardening steels have to resist strain aging to prevent the yield strength increment and stretcher strain during press process and to enhance the bake hardenability during baking process after painting. The bake hardening steels need to control the solute carbon and the solute nitrogen to improve the bake hardenability. Ti and/or Nb alloying for nitride and carbide precipitation and low carbon content below 0.003% are used to solve strain aging and formability problem for automotive materials. However, in the present study, the effect of micro-precipitation of copper sulfide on the bake hardenability and fatigue properties of extremely low carbon steel has been investigated. The bake hardenability of Cu-alloyed bake hardening (Cu-BH) steel was slightly higher (5 MPa) than that of Nb-alloyed bake hardening (Nb-BH) steel, but the fatigue limit of Cu-BH steel was far higher (45 MPa) than that of Nb-BH steel. All samples showed the ductile fracture behavior and some samples revealed distinct fatigue stages, such as crack initiation, stable crack growth and unstable crack growth.
