  • Carbon/carbon composites were developed using PAN based carbon fibres and phenolic resin as matrix in different volume fractions and heat treated to temperatures between $1000^{\circ}C$ to $2500^{\circ}C$. Although both the starting precursors are nongraphitizing hard carbons individually, their composites lead to very interesting properties e.g. x-ray diffractograms show the development of graphitic phase for composites having fibre volume fractions of 30~40%. Consequently the electrical resistivity of such composites reaches a value of $0.8\;m{\Omega}cm$, very close to highly graphitic material. However, it was found that by increasing the fibre volume fraction to 50~60%, the trend is reversed. Optical microscopy of the composites also reveals the development of strong columnar type microstructure at the fibre (matrix interface due to stress graphitization of the matrix. The study forcasts a unique possibility of producing high thermal conductivity carbon/carbon composites starting with carbon fibres in the chopped form only.

  • Titanium nitride (TiN) thin films are widely used for hard coatings due to their superior hardness, chemical stability, low friction and good adhesion properties. In this study, we investigated the effect of DC power on the characteristics of TiN thin films deposited on Si and glass substrates by DC magnetron sputtering using TiN target. We made TiN films of 300 nm thickness with various DC powers. The structural properties of films are investigated by x-ray diffractions (XRD) and tribological properties are measured by nano-indentation, nano-scratch tester. The rms roughness was measured by atomic forced microscopy (AFM). In the result, TiN films had the smooth surface and exhibited (111) directions with the increase of DC Power. Also, especially in case of 175 W DC power, TiN film exhibited the maximum hardness about 8 GPa, and the critical load near 25.

  • Titanium nitride (TiN) thin films are widely used for hard coatings due to their superior hardness. In this paper, we wanted see how the films properties are changed according to DC power. TiN thin films were deposited by direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering method using TiN compound target on silicon substrates. The films structural properties are examined by X-ray Diffractions (XRD) and tribological properties are measured by nano-indentation, nano-scratch tester, nano-stress tester. Especially in DC power of 150 W, the maximum hardness and the minimum residual stress of TiN film exhibited about 25 GPa and 1 GPa, respectively. And also, the critical load of TiN film prepared by magnetron sputtering method were measured over 30 N.

  • Ti(C,N) solid solutions in hot-pressed Ti($C_{x}N_{1-x}$) (x=0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0) and 40TiC-40TiN-20Ni (in wt.%) cermet were characterized in this study. For hot-pressed Ti(C,N)s, the lattice parameters and hardness values of Ti(C,N) were determined by using XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) and nanoindentation. The properties of hot-pressed Ti(C,N) samples changed linearly with their carbon or nitrogen contents. For the TiC-TiN-Ni cermet, the hardness of the hard phase and binder phase were determined by nanoindentation in conjunction with microstructural observation. The measured hardness values were ${\sim}8.7$ GPa for the binder phase and ${\sim}28.7$ GPa for the hard phase, which was close to the hardness of hot-pressed Ti($C_{0.7}N_{0.3}$).

  • To elucidate the applicability of the wide latitude X-ray film for radiographic diagnosis and treatment of diseases in small animals, the quality of the wide latitude film was compared with that of the standard latitude film which is commonly used in veterinary clinic. The images of head, neck, thorax, abdomen, extremities and joints were radiographed with the wide latitude and standard latitude film in fourteen dogs. In soft tissues such as abdominal organs, lung, skin, mammary glands, the clearer and higher contrast of the image was observed on the wide latitude film. And these advantages were more apparent in pneumoeritoneography. Therefore. it can be suggested that the wide latitude film is practically useful for the evaluation of the images of soft tissues, and also can be used on hard tissue radiography with the same quality as the standard latitude film.

  • The effects of $H_2S$ gas ratio, temperature and time on the case depth, hardness, and sulfide and nitride formation on the surface of sulfnitrided SCM440 steel have been studied by micro-pulse plasma technique. The thickness of compound layer of sulfide and nitride increased with the increase of time, temperautre and $H_2S$ gas ratio. But surface hardness decreased with the increase of soft sulfide layer because the hard nitride layer formed beneath the sulfide. The thickness of sulfide layer was about 10$\mu\textrm{m}$ abpve 0.0088% of $H_2S$ gas. The highest surface hardness of the compound layer was Hv835 at $530^{\circ}C$, 1hr and 0.06% of $H_2S$ gas. X-ray diffraction indicated that the surface products were $Fe_{1_x}S$, $Fe_{2.5}N$ and $Fe_4N$. It was confirmed by EPMA that sulfide only existed in the surface.

  • Niobium is a candidate base for new alloys devoted to applications at especially elevated temperatures. Elaborating and shaping niobium-based alloys by conventional foundry may lead to mechanically interesting microstructures. In this work a series of charges constituted of pure elements were subjected to high frequency induction melting in cold crucible to try obtaining cast highly refractory Nb-xCr and Nb-xCr-0.4 wt.%Calloys(x=27, 34 and 37 wt.%). Melting and solidification were successfully achieved. The as-cast microstructures of the obtained alloys were characterized by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction and their hardness were specified by Vickers macro-indentation. The obtained as-cast microstructures are composed of a body centered cubic (bcc) niobium dendritic matrix and of an interdendritic eutectic compound involving the bcc Nb phase and a $NbCr_2$ Laves phase. The obtained alloys are hard to cut and particularly brittle at room temperature. Hardness is of a high level (higher than 600Hv) and is directly driven by the chromium content or the amount of {bcc Nb - $NbCr_2$} eutectic compound. Adding 0.4 wt.% of carbon did not lead to carbides but tends to increase hardness.

  • A 30-kV plasma immersion ion implantation setup (P $I^3$) has been equipped with a self-developed 6'-magnetron to perform hard coatings with enhanced adhesion by P $I^3$D(P $I^3$ assisted deposition) process. Using ICP source with immersed Ti antenna and reactive magnetron sputtering of Ti target in $N_2$/Ar ambient gas mixture, the TiN films were prepared on Si substrates at different pulse bias and ion-to-atom arrival ratio ( $J_{i}$ $J_{Me}$ ). Prior to TiN film formation the nitrogen implantation was performed followed by deposition of Ti buffer layer under A $r^{+}$ irradiation. Films grown at $J_{i}$ $J_{Me}$ =0.003 and $V_{pulse}$=-20kV showed columnar grain morphology and (200) preferred orientation while those prepared at $J_{i}$ $J_{Me}$ =0.08 and $V_{pulse}$=-5 kV had dense and eqiaxed structure with (111) and (220) main peaks. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed some amount of $Ti_{x}$ $N_{y}$ in the films. The maximum microhardness of $H_{v}$ =35 GN/ $M^2$ was at the pulse bias of -5 kV. The P $I^3$D technique was applied to enhance wear properties of commercial tools of HSS (SKH51) and WC-Co alloy (P30). The specimens were 25-kV PII nitrogen implanted to the dose 4.10$^{17}$ c $m^{-2}$ and then coated with 4-$\mu\textrm{m}$ TiN film on $Ti_{x}$ $N_{y}$ buffer layer. Wear resistance was compared by measuring weight loss under sliding test (6-mm $Al_2$ $O_3$ counter ball, 500-gf applied load). After 30000 cycles at 500 rpm the untreated P30 specimen lost 3.10$^{-4}$ g, and HSS specimens lost 9.10$^{-4}$ g after 40000 cycles while quite zero losses were demonstrated by TiN coated specimens.s.

  • Ground Level Enhancements (GLEs) in cosmic ray intensity observed during the period of 1997-2012 have been studied with energetic solar features and disturbances in solar wind plasma parameters and it is seen that all the GLEs have been found to be associated with coronal mass ejections, hard X-ray solar flares and solar radio bursts. All the GLEs have also been found to be associated with sudden jumps in solar proton flux of energy of ${\geq}60Mev$. A positive correlation with correlation coefficient of 0.48 has been found between the maximum percentage intensity (Imax%) of Ground Level Enhancements and the peak value of solar proton flux of energy (${\geq}60Mev$). All the Ground Level Enhancements have been found to be associated with jumps in solar wind plasma velocity (JSWV) events. A positive correlation with correlation coefficient of 0.43 has been found between the maximum percentage intensity (Imax %) of Ground Level Enhancements and the peak value of solar wind plasma velocity of associated (JSWV) events. All the Ground Level Enhancements have been found to be associated with jumps in solar wind plasma pressure (JSWP) events. A positive correlation with correlation coefficient of 0.67 has been found between the maximum percentage intensity (Imax %) of Ground Level Enhancements and the peak value of solar wind plasma pressure of associated (JSWP) events and of 0.68 between the maximum percentage intensity (Imax %) of Ground Level Enhancements and the magnitude of the jump in solar wind plasma pressure of associated (JSWP) events.
