An Analytical Model of Co-oscillating Tide under Frictional Effect in the Yellow Sea

  • The response of the tidal waves to friction effect is investigated in terms of deformation of Kelvin and Poincare modes, The 1st Poincare mode does not exist over the low frequency region less than the critical frequency of omega ${\omega}$${\sqrt{2f}}$, with ${\gamma}$/f=0.0, but the mode comes to exist in the presence of friction. When friction exists and its magnitude increases, the wave number increases, indicating that the wave length of the Poincare mode becomes increasingly short with increasing friction. The damping coefficient gradually increases with increasing friction over the high frequency region, but the trend is reversed over the low frequency region. In case of Kelvin wave the present study substantiates the characters of Kelvin wave examined by Mofjeld (1980) and Lee (1988). Based on the examination of frictional effects on the tidal wave propagation, the co-oscillating tides in the Yellow Sea are examined by considering both the head opening and bottom friction effects. As friction is introduced and increased in addition to partial opening at bay head, the location of the amphidromic point near the Shantung Peninsula moves more southwestward. This southwestward movement of the amphidromic point is increasingly compatible with the observed location of Ogura's or Nishida's tidal chart of the M$_2$ tide.

  • The change of water level at Mokpo Harbour and its adjacent coastal area due to the construction of the Youngsan Estuary Barrage and the Third Land Reclamation Work of estuary barren had been roughly expected. Periodical floods, which occur 2 times per month, are also being observed at the low lying commercial areas near the Mokpo Old Harbor. Although it is said that the highest tidal current component among the tidal current records at the approaching channel to Mokpo Harbor is reduced to 6 kts, because of the esturary barrage, they do not give any precise statement or a deep analysis for the flooding and periodical water level change under certain environmental conditions. Moreover, they never tried the analysis of development plan considering the natural disaster such as typhoon or other extreme conditions. Thus, it is necessary to collect and analyze the data related to floodings, harbor oscillations, currents, and water quality , etc. because of the development considering the extreme condition. This study deals the problem of the water level change among the integrated analyses of the coastal area changes.   • The failure at the head section of rubble mound breakwaters is more important than other failure modes. because this initial failures will occur the failure of the trunk section and lead to the instability of the structure. The three-dimensional failure modes are discussed using the experimental data with multi-directional waves considering the failure modes. It was occurred by the topographical characteristics around the head of rubble mound breakwater. The spacial characteristics of failure mode around the rubble-mound structures can be summarized as follows: 1) It was clarified that the failure modes at the round head of a detached breakwater are classified as failure by plunging breaker on the slope, failure by direct incident wave force and failure at the rubble mound breakwaters. 2) The failure mode was found in the lower wave height than the design wave by the breaker depth effects and topography around structures. It is clarified that the structure was monitored safely designed for the design wave but the failure was occurred by the reason of breaker waves.

Collision Risk Analysis in Busan Harbour

  • This thesis, concentrates on marine collision risks of the area divided by cells. Using a gas molecular collision calculation model, a collision risk model is proposed. Collision risk is estimated by relative angle, relative speed, and ship's density in the cell. For one week, Automatic Identification System (AIS) data was collected and analyzed on the Busan North Port area. The results indicate a high-risk area at the sea route connection point in Busan North Port. It also shows that twilight is the time of day when most collisions occur. This means that the area is high risk due to the number of collisions and other dangerous factors related to twilight. Although there is still need to consider other risks such as grounding risks, the results of this study are useful to for plotting a risk map for the port.

  • Cockroaches are abundant in Nigeria and are seen to harbour an array of pathogens. Environmental and sanitary conditions associated with demographic/socio-economic settings of an area could contribute to the prevalence of disease pathogens in cockroaches. A total of 246 cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) in urban (Benin, n=91), semi-urban (Ekpoma, n=75) and rural (Emuhi, n=70) settings in Edo State, Nigeria were collected within and around households. The external body surfaces and alimentary canal of these cockroaches were screened for bacterial, fungal, and parasitological infections. Bacillus sp. and Escherichia coli were the most common bacteria in cockroaches. However, Enterococcus faecalis could not be isolated in cockroaches trapped from Ekpoma and Emuhi. Aspergillus niger was the most prevalent fungus in Benin and Ekpoma, while Mucor sp. was predominant in Emuhi. Parasitological investigations revealed the preponderance of Ascaris lumbricoides in Benin and Emuhi, while Trichuris trichura was the most predominant in Ekpoma. The prevalence and burden of infection in cockroaches is likely to be a reflection of the sanitary conditions of these areas. Also, cockroaches in these areas making incursions in homes may increase the risk of human infections with these disease agents.

  • These days the surroundings around harbours are rapidly changing. Particularly in the age of Pacific Rim it is rather clear that the competition among the harbours in Northeast Asia region where are so many of worldwidely famous harbours might be intense. From 1980s on the industrialization and urbanization in the area of Kwang Yand-Bay, thanks to the regional development program, have been speedily under way. And in the year of 1987 the 1st development program of Kwang Yang-Bay container quay was started and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 1997. As the completion of the program it is expected that in 1998 the newly-opening Kwang Yang-Bay container quay on one hand will play a role in relieving the awaiting-time of vessels in Pusan Port, and on the other hand it will contribute to the balanced development of the country. In this context this thesis conducted Its study on the effect of the specification and facilities of a harbour, and especially on the effect on the regional economy resulted by the development & developmental static of Kwang Yang-Bay container quay. And progressively in the thesis the plan to provide Kwang Yang-Bay container quay with competitiveness was suggested.

군산의 근대 창고건물 현황 및 산업유산으로서의 가치에 관한 연구 (A Study on Characteristics of the Modern Warehouse in Gunsan and Its Value as Industrial Heritage)

  • This research is to analyze the modern warehouses in Gunsan during the Japanese Colonial Period. They were the spatial and urban symbol of City of Rice, Gunsan. The main purpose of this study is to survey the modern warehouses in the original center of city, to find their architectural characteristics and to set up a possibility of reuse. 7 existing warehouse buildings are located at Jangmi-Dong and Jooksung-Dong, and they have been built between 1935 and 1940. The warehouse buildings have a module of 6m and they are generally 12m wide, 24~48m long and 8m high. Their structure is composed of reinforced concrete and wooden truss. All warehouse buildings have a rectangular form. Now the diverse commercial programs occupy the original space. Modern warehouse in Gunsan has the spatial and symbolic value as industrial heritage. Therefore, it is necessary to respect the original value of modern warehouse and to create a reusing space for the current generation. It is also essential to verify restoring possibility of three symbolic warehouse buildings in the harbour that were demolished.

  • A native species to the European ocean, the tunicate Ciona intestinalis now appears worldwide, from sub-Arctic to tropical regions. C. intestinalis generally occurs as an opportunistic fouling organism on artificial substrates in harbors or aquaculture. This study focused on estimating the early growth pattern of C. intestinalis under various temperature conditions. Adults were collected from the Guryungpo harbour in November 2016, and their artificially inseminated eggs were used for the study. The growth of the C. intestinalis was investigated at 8 constant temperatures, ranging from $12^{\circ}C$ to $26^{\circ}C$, at 30 psu. Results indicate that the growth of C. intestinalis increased with increasing temperature. The growth was sluggish at $12^{\circ}C$, and decreased at $26^{\circ}C$. The optimal temperature for growth of C. intestinalis was therefore estimated to be between $20^{\circ}C$ and $24^{\circ}C$.

완경사 방정식을 이용한 항내의 파고예측 (A Prediction Method of Wave Deformation in Harbors Using the Mild Slope Equation)

  • 해안에서 발생하는 재해의 큰 원인은 파랑작용에 기인되기 때문에 해양 기술자는 정확한 파랑변형을 예측하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 파랑변형의 주요인은 간수효과, 반사, 회석, 굴석, 산란, 방사등을 들 수 있다. 최근, 파랑변형에 대하여 수치모델이 이용되고 있다. 본 연구는 굴석과 회석을 동시에 고려할 수 있는 완경사방정식을 이용하여 유한요소법으로 수치모델을 수립했다. 이 방법은 복잡한 경계조건을 갖는 해안에 정확한 파랑예측을 할 수 있는 장점이 있지만 몇 가지의 개선해야할 문제점도 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 계산결과를 검정하기 위해 모형실험을 실시했다. 완경사 방정식을 유한요소법으로 계산한 계산값과 Lee의 방법(Helmholtz 방정식을 유한차분법으로 수치계산한 방법)으로 계산한 값, 그리고 실험값과 비교한 결과 타당성있는 일치를 얻었다.
