The first Korean case with Floating-Harbor syndrome with a novel SRCAP mutation diagnosed by targeted exome sequencing

  • Floating-Harbor syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder associated with SRCAP mutation. To date, approximately 50 cases of Floating-Harbor syndrome have been reported, but none have been reported in Korea yet. Floating-Harbor syndrome is characterized by delayed bony maturation, unique facial features, and language impairment. Here, we present a 6-year-old boy with a triangular face, deep-set protruding eyes, low-set ears, wide nose with narrow nasal bridge, short philtrum, long thin lips, clinodactyly, and developmental delay that was transferred to our pediatric clinic for genetic evaluation. He showed progressive delay in the area of language and cognition-adaption as he grew. He had previously undergone chromosomal analysis at another hospital due to his language delay, but his karyotype was normal. We performed targeted exome sequencing, considering several syndromes with similar phenotypes. Library preparation was performed with the TruSight One sequencing panel, which enriches the sample for about 4,800 genes of clinical relevance. Massively parallel sequencing was conducted with NextSeq. An identified variant was confirmed by Sanger sequencing of the patient and his parents. Finally, the patient was confirmed as the first Korean case of Floating-Harbor syndrome with a novel SRCAP (Snf2 related CREBBP activator protein) mutation (c.7732dupT, p.Ser2578Phefs*6), resulting in early termination of the protein; it was not found in either of his healthy parents or a control population. To our knowledge, this is the first study to describe a boy with Floating-Harbor syndrome with a novel SRCAP mutation diagnosed by targeted exome sequencing in Korea.

Benthic Polychaetous Community in Northern Kyeonggi Bay in December 1995 (1995년 12월 경기만 북부해역에서와 저서다모류 군집)

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the distribution and species composition of benthic polychaetous community in northern Kyeonggi Bay in September 1995. Mean density of benthic animals was 557 indiv./$m^2$. Benthic polychaetes were the most dominant faunal group, comprising 60 species with a mean density of 488 indiv./$m^2$. Benthic polychaetes were most abundant in Yumha Channel centering on Incheon Harbor, whereas relatively poor in the intertidal zones fringing Yongjong Island and Songdo area, and in the offshore main channel. The most dominant polychaete was Heteromastus filiformis (47.3% of polychaetous community), followed by Nephtys palybranchia, Tharyx sp., Sternaspis scutata and so on. Kyeonggi Bay could be divided into 4 regions from cluster analysis based on the dominant species composition: offsea/channel region, Incheon Harbor, intertidal zone of Yongjong Island, and intertidal zone of Songdo area. Highest species number and diversity index (H') were recorded at offsea/channel region, whereas highest faunal density at Incheon Harbor. Incheon Harbor was characterized by high abundance of H. filiformis. Compared with the previous studies carried out in Kyeonggi Bay, faunal density and species number have little changed for the recent 10 years. Dominant species was different between each study, but has been among opportunistic species of small-sized polychaetes belonging to capitellids, cirratulids or spionids. These results indicate that Kyeonggi Bay has been organically polluted steadily; specifically, this study reveals that Incheon Harbor has been the center of pollution and that the benthic community in the outer sea off Sihwa dike has become unstable.

Planning the Redesign of Inner Harbor by Comparative Analysis and Typological Approach (내항 입지의 비교분석과 유형화를 통한 재개발 방향 모색)

  • Due to changes in the distribution industry, inner harbors have been on a sharp decline in the recent past. However, through the application of the right development plans, such harbors can be revitalized into vibrant urban areas again. The importance of inner harbors has been recognized by the relevant authorities in Korea which are now pushing forward with redevelopment plans for its inner harbors. This study proposes a new approach to redevelopment plans based on the recognition that inner harbors have unique characteristics involving both inland areas and the ocean. In the study, representative inner harbors were selected and analyzed comparatively according to two distinct concepts of location: the Gateway Concept and the Central Place Concept. Based on these concepts, the conditions of the inner harbors were examined. Their location can be typed, and development directions were proposed according to their types and conditions. However, difficult points such as isolation and separation between an urban district and the harbor area, can be obstructions to their potential revival. An inner harbor needs to be considered as an intermediary, connecting place between the ocean and the city, not as another ordinary development area. In addition, a redevelopment plan should be accompanied by a strategic viewpoint to make the most of this feature.

Sensitivity Analysis on Hybrid Element Model for Harbor Oscillation (항만 공진에 대한 복합요소 수치모형의 민감도 분석)

  • In the present study, for fully-open rectangular harbors, sensitivity analyses are made for the major parameters which are relevant to the practical application of a hybrid element model widely used fur the analysis of harbor oscillation. The results show that it is desirable to extend the finite element region to the area in which depth change is not large and that it is appropriate to take the depth of the outer region for analytic solution as the average along the boundary between the two regions. It is expected that the number of Fourier components of the analytic solution may not be important for a constant-depth simple-shaped harbor but its significance may increase for harbors of varying depth and complex geometry. It is found that the effect of incident wave direction is not significant for the first resonance mode but its effect becomes important as the bottom slope increases, especially for the higher resonance modes.

Numerical Analysis of Flow Pattern by Outflow Gates with Manifold Channel (다기수로를 가진 수중 유출구에 의한 유동패턴에 관한 수치해석)

  • For the improvement of water quality in a harbor, several studies have been carried out on SEB (Seawater Exchange Breakwater) in recent years, but a problem has been shown whereby the water on the inside area far from the SEB cannot be easily exchanged. In order to solve the problem of the SEB, the Manifold channel, a new concept of the SEB, is introduced in this paper. By using the manifold channel, it is possible to exchange the water of the inside area for seawater from the outside. Here, to assess the outflow gates of the manifold channel governing flow behavior, a virtual manifold channel controlled the location, width and direction of outflow gates applied to the Jumunjin fishery port, where the SEB has been established. In addition, the desirable flow pattern of the port by utilizing the two layer current model is identified, and five general cases of the manifold channel are described in this paper. The model is verified by comparing with observation of the SEB model, and the results are in general agreement. From the results of the manifold channel, in the case of the Jumunjin fishery port, the small circulation of counter clockwise is necessary for the water exchange on the inside area, but it should be controlled by the outflow gates for other areas. Using the two layer current model, the desirable flow pattern of the port can be predicted, and the water exchange for the upper and lower layer can be examined. For the practical use of the manifold channel, further studies on the manifold channel will be necessary, and it may then be used broadly for the design of breakwater in the future.

Fine dust(PM10) emission calculated of Dong-Hae harbor around area using inverse modeling technique (역모델링 기법을 이용한 동해항 주변지역 미세먼지 배출량 산출)

  • Data obtained from the Calpuff inverse modeling estimate the emission amount of pollutants, and enable to establish the aim for reduction through the comparison of various cases. This study pursued to accumulate the fundamental data by the Calpuff inverse modeling for five areas in the vicinity of Donghae harbor, which focused on reduction of atmospheric fine dust. As a result of evaluation of the allowed emission amount for local sites, site-D required the most reduction, $4.95{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}S$, based on the atmospheric guideline, $50{\mu}g/m^3$. The theoretical mitigation could decrease the average concentration of PM10 to $42.6{\mu}g/m^3$ for the study field (Donghae waste water treatment plant). Modeling only for site-A emission showed the potential concentration around the residential area of Donghae harbor, $40{\sim}50{\mu}g/m^3$. However, it will rise over $50{\mu}g/m^3$ with the addition of background level. Therefore no more emission would be allowed. Site-B including commercial area and unpaved field required the reduction of $0.11{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}S$ due to vehicles and fugitive dust. Site-C and E did not emit additional pollutants.

  • The harbor back area is not a planned space, but rather a space created by harbor space development. For this reason, the residential environment in the area behind the port has been very poor from the past to the present. Recently, the redevelopment has been increasing in accordance with the function of the port space. However, the development of the domestic port space is limited to the port space, and there is still little preparation for improvement of the residential environment in the port area. In this study, the degree of decline of the port area was diagnosed and analyzed for the purpose of deriving urban regeneration scenarios to improve the residential environment of port - backed areas. The urban regeneration factor to improve the livability of the port - backed area, which has been declining since then, was derived, and the scenarios in which each factor was applied were constructed.

  • Recently, many ships such as fishing boats, cargo ships, high speed ferry boats are visiting Mokpo harbor. In particular, many marine accidents rave been occurred at this area because of the narrow channel, a thick fog, the existing of the shallow waters etc. However there is no suitable ships' routeing system which takes account of today's traffic situations in this area. This study aims at the settling of hazardous factors to mitigate the danger to vessels in mokpo harbor and to secure the safety qf maritime environment.

Assessment of Contamination of Harbor Dredged Materials for Beneficial Use (항만준설토사 유효활용을 위한 오염도 평가)

  • Contamination level assessment of harbor dredged materials is carried out for beneficial use, which generated annually due to port construction and maintenance of harbor channel. The basic purpose of environmental risk assessment was a scientific approach to susceptibility of hazard risk to human's health from different dredged materials. And this paper proposes a guideline of safely beneficial use of dredged materials at both industrial area and residental area, generated from major port execution throughout a sound investigation of their contamination levels. Newly proposed guidelines were in general higher levels compared to both current guidelines of treatment and use of dredged materials and soil environment protection levels. Finally, environmental assessment results of dredged material contamination generated in major ports of Korea for beneficial use based on pre-assessment environmental levels show that some port's dredged materials contain heavy metals such as Cd, As, Cr and Zn, more than base levels which requires more precise contamination investigation. Others were found to be very appropriate for beneficial use.

Effects of Tidal Flat Enlargement Induced by Tidal Amplification (조석확폭에 수반되는 조간대 영역 확대의 영향성)

  • A method has been developed, which can be handled easily and economically for inputting depth data of complex bathymetry and enourmous tidal flats such as Mokpo coastal zone. The method is applied to Chungkye Bay, and some hydrodynamic features related with tidal flat are analyzed. Tidal amplification by construction of the sea-dike and sea-walls had been detected not only near Mokpo Harbor but also at Chungkye Bay which is connected with Mokpo Harbor by a narrow channel. This brings about the increase of tidal flat area, which makes the ebb dominance at Chungkye Bay more seriously. This pronounced ebb dominance with the increase of tidal discharge at the channel between Chungkye Bay and Mokpo Harbor, which results in deepened ebb dominance near Mokpo Harbor as well.
