The purpose of this study, in which 573 students from 2 high schools in Kang Nung city participated was to identify the attitude and experience of sexual harassment. This information will provide useful data, and promote a more systematic sexual harassment education program. The subjects of this study were 278 male students and 295 female students. The data was collected from September 25 to October 6. 2000. The data was analyzed using the statistical Computer package. SPSS to manipulate the data along with frequency, percentage, and mean t-test. The results from this study were summarized as follows. 1. The results from this comparison between two groups were significant in their attitude on sexual harassment(t=-2.26. p=0.024). Female students had higher scores than male students. 2. As a cause of sexual harassment. 'A man's misjudgement regarding a women as sexual objects(n=130: 22.7%)'. 'Patriarchal system of unequal distribution of power and status between the sexes(n=105: 18.3%)'. 'The effect of sexual stimulatives. (pornography. pornovideo. TV program ect.)(n=89: 15.5%)'. 3. As a countermeasure for prevention, 'Punishment, law and regulation of the sexual harasser(n = 151; 26.4%)', 'A preventive education of sexual harassment in adolescence (n = 125: 21.8%)'. 'Reformation of gender inequality and sex discrimination in the socio-structure(n=76; 13.3%)'. 4. Out of 573 students who participated in this study, 209(36.5%) students reported experiencing an incident of sexual harassment. For 278 males who participated in this study, 88(31.7%) had experienced an incident of sexual harassment. For the 295 females who participated in this study, 121(41.0%) had experienced an incident of sexual harassment. The type of sexual harassment is reported physical sexual harassment(n = 248: 40.5%), verbal sexual harassment(n = 226; 36.7%), and visual sexual harassment(n=139: 22.6%). 5. Their age in which they had experienced harassment was usually 'after 16 years of age(n=122: 58.4%)'. The age of harassers were mostly teenagers(n=112; 53.6%). The relationship to the with sexual harasser was a stranger (n=85; 40.7%), or a friend(n=78: 37.3%). After the incident of sexual harassment occurred, some students informed friends (n=114: 54.5%), 63(30.1%) told no one. Male students' feelings after the experienced harassment ranged from: 'be interesting', 'be pleasant'. Female students' feelings after the experienced harassment ranged from; 'be surprised', 'get a shock', 'fear', 'shame'.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience and perception of sexual harassment during the clinical practice among nursing students and to identify the relationship between these variables and self-esteem. Methods: Participants included 191 senior nursing students who voluntarily participated. Sexual harassment experiences and perceptions were measured using the tools developed by the researcher. Self-esteem was measured using self-esteem inventory developed by Rogenberg. Results: 50.8% of the participants experienced sexual harassment. Physical harassment was the most common, followed by verbal, visual and gender-role related sexual harassment. 'Blocking the way' and 'Brushing one's body on purpose' were the most common behaviors. The perception of sexual harassment severity was 3.35 out of 5 points. There were negative correlation between sexual harassment experience and self-esteem (r=-.17, p=.013). The subjects who experienced sexual harassment showed lower self-esteem score than those who did not (t=-2.10, p=.037). The main offender was a male patient in 40s, and the psychiatric ward was the most vulnerable to sexual harassment. Conclusion: Results showed that sexual harassment in clinical practice among nursing students were serious. It is necessary to develop an educational program to prepare them for sexual harassment in clinical practice.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among parents' marital conflict perceived by school-aged children, children's aggression, and peer harassment six hundred thirty seven 5th and 6th graders (306 girls and 331 boys) participated in this study. Each participant completed a children's perception of parental conflict scale, a children's aggression scale, and a peer harassment scale. Major findings of this study are as follows: 1) In terms of physical harassment, boys were bullied and victimized more than girls. 2) Children's aggression was positively related to the physical and relational peer harassment. Parents' marital conflict was positively related to children's aggression. There was a statistically significant relationship between parents marital conflict and physical and relational peer harassment. 3) Parents' marital conflict and children's aggression influenced physical and relational harassment for both boys and girls.
The purposes of this research were to find the general trends of sexual harassment at work and to investigate the differences of related variables. The data were obtained through 321 employee living in Kwangju. The major findings were as follows : 1) 53.0% of respondents reported that they had experienced the offence of sexual harassment at work at least once. And 57.9% of respondents reported that they had experienced the victimization of sexual harassment at work at least once. 2) The most apparent response of victimization at work was ‘anger’. And the most frequent coping behavior was ‘smiling or joking’. 3) The offence style of sexual harassment was different by sex, men's marriage, and sex-role attitude. The victimization style of sexual harassment was different by sex, job, women rate in workplace, attitude toward sexual harassment, and sex-role attitude.
The objectives of this study are first, to investigate the significant differences in the perception and attitude for sexual role of workers, second, to identify the degree of the perception of women manpower in workplace, third, to identify the perception for sexual harassment in workplace and fourth to analyze the relative important factors that effect on conception for sexual harassment. The survey data were collected by questionnaires on May 2000, and the number of subjects was 300 workers. The SAS-PC program was used for the statistical analysis such as t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. Major results were follow as: 1. The performance rates of health education for sexual harassment was 66%, and 58.9% of the lecturer of sexual harassment education was occupational health nurse. The 45.2% of workers acquired the information for sexual harassment through massive education in workplace. 2. The perception and attitude of sexual role was relatively positive as 2.3(SD=0.69) of mean values. and the difference by sex, age, marital status. and working period was significant. 3. The perception of the women manpower in workplace was generally positive as 7.9(SD= 3.25) of mean values, and the working experience group of less 10 years and more 10 years old age group showed the significant difference in comparative to other group. 4. The perception of sexual harassment of workplace composed of legal basis, range of victim, place of sexual harassment, type of sexual harassment. misconception of sexual harassment, and coping methods of sexual harassment. Among of these perception. type and coping methods of sexual harassment were shown high perception level. The difference by sex between group for perception of sexual harassment was highly significant. 5. Factors that effect on the perception of sexual harassment was not high for the explanation power of regression, but the age, the type of task, the. perception for women manpower were important variables. Based on this results of study, we recommend that the education of sexual harassment in workplace should be strengthened and specified according to age, working period, type of working task. It also should provide various education and information to workplace. Finally and there should be continuous education opportunity systematically to occupational health nurses who are major lecturers for sexual harassment, therefore they can educate workers more effectively.
Purpose: This study examined the level of self-esteem and awareness of sexual harassment among college students majoring in physical therapy to discover the status of sexual harassment and the types of and responses to sexual harassment at clinical training sites. Methods: The study participants included 195 college students majoring in physical therapy in Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces, who responded fully to the survey questionnaire. The data were prepared through self-reporting on a structured questionnaire and collected from September to November 2018. Results: The difference in the mean value of self-esteem was evident between the two groups investigated. The most common types of sexual harassment were verbal, visual, and physical. The types of damage reported by the participants were emotional, physical, and social. The group of participants who experienced sexual harassment had a high rate of avoidance, while the group of participants who did not experience sexual harassment exhibited a high rate of coping. Conclusion: The incidence of verbal sexual harassment was reported to be significantly higher, and the emotional damage was the most serious. Students should be provided with more specific and realistic preventive education or countermeasures so they can respond more proactively to real situations.
This study is a descriptive research to investigate the actual conditions under which nurses working in long-term care hospitals are sexually harassed and situations in which sexual harassment occurs and to determine victims' coping methods after being sexually harassed. The period of data collection was from May 13, 2013 to June 14 and the research subjects were 113 nurses working in 10 long-term care hospitals in Busan assigned by convenience sampling. The results showed that sexual harassment of nurses mostly occurred as follows: visual harassment, which involved the perpetrators looking inappropriately at nurses; physical harassment, which involved intentional touching or leaning into the body; and verbal harassment, which involved making sexual jokes and remarks. The development of a prevention program for sexual harassment targeting patients and nurses in long-term care hospitals should be required to enable victims to perceive and efficiently cope with sexual harassment.
Purpose : Sexual abuse especially in younger group have been growing. This study was performed to propose the fundamental data for developing early education program to prevent damage from sexual harassment in elementary school students. Method : Questionnaire survey on cognitions and experiences about sexual harassment was done on 3125 elementary school students from seven elementary schools in Busan area from January to March, 2002. Data analysis was done with SPSS (ver 10.0). Results : Though 82% of the students have ever herd about sexual harassment previously, but self assessment of 'well-known' was only 5%. About 40% of them have ever experienced audio-visual sexual materials mainly through PC (18%), media (14%), etc. And, 60% of them have ever educated about sexual harassment. In cognitions, they agreed 'unwanted touch', 'intentional showing his (her) own body', 'send lewd mails and pictures', but disagreed 'ask massage from aged', 'gaudy joke' as one of sexual harassment. In attitudes, 'no response', 'defense with friends and family', 'express unpleasantness apparently' were desirable pattern, instead, 'his (her) own responsibility', 'problem only between person concerned', 'neglect is the best way' were undesirable. About 24% of them have ever experienced at least one of the fifteen types of sexual harassment with major types of lewd mails pictures (11%), hugging (5%), ask massage (4.7%) and unwanted touch (3.3%). The experience by gender was higher in girls (25.0%) than boys (22.4%) with no statistical significance. The mean level of cognition and attitude out of one hundred was $70.3{\pm}28.1$ and $73.5{\pm}15.9$, respectively. The mean frequency of experience was $0.4{\pm}1.1$ times. The level of cognition and attitude was higher in girls, 6th graders, and in ever educated group (p<0.001). Conclusions : The cognition level of elementary school students about sexual harassment assessed considerable. And, they also experienced several types of sexual harassment, though not too much. Therefore, compatible education program let them able to protect themselves from sexual harassment should be developed and applied even in early school age.
The purpose of this study is to examine the organizational culture of dental hospitals and clinics, as well as to assess members' perceptions and actual conditions related to sexual harassment. The research method involved conducting a cross-sectional survey of 149 dental hygienists using random sampling. The analysis utilized frequency analysis and descriptive statistical analysis. Regarding awareness of organizational culture within the workplace, 39.6% responded, "It is difficult to freely use maternity and childcare leave at our workplace". When asked about sexual harassment, 51.7% of respondents said they had received training on sexual harassment prevention. The highest level of sexual harassment experienced was "sexual analogy or evaluation of appearance", at 45.8%. The most common perpetrators of sexual harassment were agency heads and directors, at 37.5%. The most common behavior of the victim at the time was "changing the subject or avoiding the scene" (41.7%). 50.0% of victims of sexual harassment responded to the harm by "just putting up with it". The most common response to the direct and indirect impact of sexual harassment was "there was no specific impact". The most common response from the agency was "there were no suitable measures". Regarding the most necessary policy to prevent sexual harassment, "strict punishment for perpetrators (37.5%)" was the highest. There is a need for organizational and cultural changes to reduce sexual harassment in the workplace. Additionally, it is crucial for the country and society as a whole to actively participate in and improve the system.
This study investigated workplace harassment perceived by deluxe hotel employees, examined its effect on their turnover intent, and verified difference in workplace harassment perception according to demographics and job characteristics. Based on total 248 samples obtained from the empirical research, this study reviewed reliability and validity using SPSS program. The hypothesized relationships in the model were tested simultaneously by using regression analysis. The major findings are as follows. First, the disrespectful behavior(${\beta}=.362$), verbal aggression(${\beta}=.336$), and physical aggression(${\beta}=.135$) among workplace harassment have positive effect on turnover intent. Also, according to the result of examining differences in perception of workplace harassment in accordance with employees' demographics and job characteristics, the average values of those in their 20s and those whose working experience was five years or shorter were lowest and they were most exposed to workplace harassment. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.
