  • Gilles Deleuze presents his distinctive logic of sensation in "Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation" with his own approach to Bacon's paintings. What matters here is the sensation of 'haptic' that is 'one possibility of the eyes' but different from optical perception. The concept of 'haptic' has been translated into Korean variously, and Gilles Deleuze adopted this concept from Austrian art historian, Alois Riegl. Alois Riegl had used the concept of 'haptic' to mean proximate view (Nahsicht in German) as in seeing Egyptian bas-relief. Gilles Deleuze was in succession to Alois Riegl's way of thinking and used the concept of 'haptic' to discuss Bacon's paintings. By the way, Alois Riegl had adopted this concept anyway to read Egyptian bas-reliefs, but Gilles Deleuze applies this concept to paintings. Actually, this concept in Gilles Deleuze's theory of painting has more meanings than Alois Riegl'. That is to say, when we intend to understand "The Logic of Sensation" as a new logic of sensation to be represented more than just a discussion about Bacon's paintings, we would say that key word is the concept of 'haptic' being symbolic of Bacon's paintings. Yet, what kind of sensation is the 'haptic'? And, what is Deleuze's theory of sensation? I want to interpret "Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation" as a work being developed through his own theory of sensation, and further more I should like to draw special attention to the sensation of 'haptic' in order to make his theory of sensation with admirable clarity.

  • Objectives : Perceptual experiences have a causal relationship with reality. If there exists something corresponding to acupoints, there should be perceptual experiences for that something. The purpose of this study is to identify and to analyze the perceptual experiences for acupoints within 『LingShu·BenShu』. Methods : First, we briefly propose a perceptual anatomy in order to describe the perceived human body parts, and their perceived directions and places. Second, we analyze the ways of identifying acupoints in the original text of 『LingShu·BenShu』. Results : From 『LingShu·BenShu』, the procedures of identifying total 64 acupoints were recognized. It was clarified that they are by way of visual and haptic explorations in body regions and partial regions. Conclusions : Perceptual explorations for acupoints follow three major principles: of gradual narrowing down, of determination of direction or place, of relative distance. At the final stages, categories of form and location are encountered by observers. The forms have either concavities or convexities. They are determinate indicators of where acupoints are, while the locations are indetermanate. Haptic forms of acupoints are newly discovered from textual analysis with perceptual anatomy. These properties will shed new light both on study of acupoints and on study of meridians.

  • The purpose of this paper is to test the hypothesis that some early Chinese meridians were described by haptic exploration of the arterial pulse. The method is as follows: First, the relevant passages of the Mawangdui medical texts, the oldest meridian monographs, are translated based on perceptual anatomy. Second, the pulse is haptically searched for in the palm, lower arm, upper arm, armpit, and torso of the human body. Finally, their locations are compared with the translation. As a result, It was confirmed that the pulse locations detected on the body were mostly consistent with the routes of the meridians described in the texts. So meridians were haptically detectable pulse routes. What is known today as the flow direction of hand-yin meridians is actually the direction of searching the pulse. Our result runs counter to Huang Longxiang's claim that the route of the meridians are virtual routes set by speculation. Our findings also dispute Vivien Shaw's claim that the meridians of Mawangdui medical texts were discovered by anatomical dissection. They also refute the claim that meridians were discovered by the extrasensory perception of the inner sight (內觀) and the subjective experience of the meridian sensitive person. The hand-yin meridians of Mawangdui medical texts are well described so that anyone can find them by touching them with their fingers.

  • This paper presents an effective representation scheme for the shape analysis of the hippocampal structure and a stereoscopic-haptic environment to enhance sense of realism. The parametric model and the 3D skeleton represent various types of hippocampal shapes and they are stored in the Octree data structure. So they can be used for the interactive shape analysis. And the 3D skeleton-based pose normalization allows us to align a position and an orientation of the 3D hippocampal models constructed from multimodal medical imaging data. We also have trained Support Vector Machine (SVM) for classifying between the normal controls and epileptic patients. Results suggest that the presented representation scheme provides various level of shape representation and the SVM can be a useful classifier in analyzing the shape differences between two groups. A stereoscopic-haptic virtual environment combining an auto-stereoscopic display with a force-feedback (or haptic) device takes an advantage of 3D applications for medicine because it improves space and depth perception.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the gender-differences in vibrotactile responses(sensitivity and displeasure) of residual forearm simulated by vibration stimulation in upper limb(trans-radial) amputees. Background: Several studies have reported that vibration stimulation using the haptic vibrator is one the most effective methods for delivering sensation to an amputees. However, few studies have reported the perception to haptic vibratory stimulus, particularly sensitivity and displeasure. Method: We set up a custom-made vibration stimulation system that included 6 actuators(3 medial parts and 3 lateral parts) and a graphical user interface(GUI)-based acquisition system to investigate changes in residual somatosensory sensibility and displeasure in the forearm of upper limb(trans-radial) amputees. Vibration actuators were attached at the 25%-point on the proximal forearm. Stimulation with 32Hz, 64Hz, or 149Hz of frequency was used for the sensitivity tests and with 32~257Hz of frequency was used for the discomfort experiments. The subjective responses were evaluated on a 10 point scale. Results: The results showed that vibrotactile sensory perception in male amputees were higher than that in female amputees. In male amputees, the response at lateral area of forearm was the most sensitive than medial area; but, female amputees showed similar sensitive areas. Subjects did not experience any discomfort during vibrotactile stimuli. Conclusion: Vibrotactile response in the amputees was dependent on gender as well as area stimulated by vibration. Application: The results might contribute to develop the vibrotactile feedback system for the amputees.

  • As virtual reality technology became popular, a high demand emerged for natural and efficient interaction with the virtual environment. Mid-air manipulation is one of the solutions to such needs, letting a user manipulate a virtual object in a 3D virtual space. In this paper, we focus on manipulating a remote virtual object while visually displaying the object and providing tactile information on the object's weight. We developed two types of wearable interfaces that can provide cutaneous or vibrotactile feedback on the virtual object weight to the user's fingertips. Human perception of the remote virtual object weight during manipulation was evaluated by conducting a psychophysics experiment. The results indicate a significant effect of haptic feedback on the perceived weight of the virtual object during manipulation.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the methods applied to educational facilities of Steven Holl's architecture, especially focusing on sensible elements in the public space. Steven Holl has realized distinct space by applying very specific and limited concept. such as perspective space, color, light and shadow, time duration and perception, haptic realm, and proportion & scale. Education facilities designed by Steven Holl, are influenced the sensible aspects of space, form, materials, patterns, and other various sensible elements. Beyond the limits of color and sculptural vocabulary, Steven Holl utilizes a variety of ways which shown in educational facilities design and is identified by the emotional phenomenology of perceptual experience. Various elements in the public space are reinforced through light and materials to make experiential space in the educational facilities. This study used a composition of space that combines various sensible elements, meanings, and senses to examine how Steven Holl's architecture can mediate and reproduce user' emotional experiences and discover the existential relationship between space and user in public space of educational facilities.
