  • A haptic steering system which reflects steering reaction torque has been developed for a fixed base vehicle simulator. The haptic steering system consists of a steering effort sensor, MR-clutch, AC servo motor and controller. In order to generate realistic steering torque feel to driver and at the same time to meet real-time simulation requirement, 3D torque map is constructed by experimental data and torque generation algorithm using the torque map has been also developed. 3D torque map is constructed using curve fitting and interpolation of the measured values of the steering angle, velocity and steering torque from actual slalom test on the proving ground. In order to carry out performance test of the developed haptic steering system, a fixed based vehicle simulator is constructed by integrating real time vehicle dynamics module, VR-video/audio module, and the haptic steering system. Steering torque and steering angle curves have been obtained from virtual testing in the vehicle simulator and performance of the haptic steering system has been evaluated.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of design parameters of vibrotactile signals on semantic association with transmitted information conveying different meanings. Background: As information communication relying on human visual channel becomes excessive, the utility of vibrotactile signals is being interested as a substitute measure of delivering information. Properly designed hapticons may relieve burden of visual communication by rendering distinct and meaningfully compatible haptic sensations. Method: A typical Kansei engineering approach was adopted in this study. Ten most distinctive hapticons were selected among those having different frequencies and amplitudes. Associations between the hapticons and twenty four pairs of adjectives used to describe the state of automobile in control were gathered from thirty subjects using semantic differential scales. Results: The selected pairs of adjectives were summarized by factor analysis into two semantic dimensions named 'Awareness' and 'Directionality'. The experimental hapticons matched with the semantic dimensions were presented as a haptic emotion map. Conclusion: The results from this study support that frequencies and amplitudes of haptic signals play important roles in arousing different human perceptions regarding the two haptic emotional dimensions. Application: Properly designed hapticons with respect to the contents of transmitted information will increase human operator's situation awareness as well as system performance. The result from this study can be used to develop standardized hapticons for active haptic communication.

  • Vector field has been commonly used to visualize the data set which is invisible or is hard to explain. For instance, it could be used to visualize scientific data such as the direction and amount of wind and water field, transfer of heat through thermally conductive materials, and electromagnetic field. In this paper, we present a technique to enable intuitive recognition of the data though haptic feedback along with visual feedback. To add tactile information to graphical vector field, we model a haptic vector field and then apply it to the haptic map to guide a user to destination and haptic simulation of water field on 2D images whish can be used ill everyday life. These systems allow one to recognize vector information intuitively through haptic interface. We expect that the haptic rendering technique of vector field can be applied to various applications such as education, training, and entertainment.

  • In this paper, we propose a haptic display system that can convert Braille and tactual map(braille map) to tactile information recognizable through sense of touch almost in real-time. The proposed system consists of a haptic display hardware device, which actually delivers tactile signal to visually impaired people, and a device control software program, which converts Braille and tactile information to tactile signal and transfers it to the hardware device. Experimental evaluations of the proposed system were performed with 10 visually impaired persons. Experimental results show that the proposed system can provide similar Braille recognition rate and speed to those of existing Braille information devices. In addition, the proposed system converts tactile information to tactile signal under maximum 1.1 seconds, so that it can provide graphic information in almost real-time which is not possible with existing tactile devices, such as Braille printer.
