  • Nanoscale task such as nanolithography and nanoindenting is a challenging work that is beyond the capabilities of human sensing and precision. Since surface forces and intermolecular forces dominate over gravitational and other more intuitive forces of the macro world at the nanoscale, a user is not familiar with these novel nanoforce effects. In order to overcome this scaling barrier, haptic interfaces that consist of visual and force feedback at the macro world have been used with an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) as a manipulator at the nanoscale. In this paper, a nanoscale virtual coupling (NSVC) concept is introduced and the relationship between performance and impedance scaling factors of velocity (or position) and force are explicitly represented. Experiments have been performed for nanoindenting and nanolithography with different materials in the nanoscale virtual surface. The interaction forces (non contact and contact nanoforces) between the AFM tip and the nano sample are transmitted to the operator through the haptic interface.

  • Teleoperation enables an operator to manipulate remote objects. One of the main goals in teleoperation researches is to provide the operator with the feeling of the telepresence, being present at the remote site. For these purposes, a master robot must be designed as a bilateral control system that can transmit position/force information to a slave robot and feedback the interaction force. A newly proposed impedance algorithm is applied for the control of a haptic interface that was developed as a master robot. With the movements of the haptic interface for position/for co commands, impedance parameters are varying always. When the impedance parameters between an operator and ...

  • Vector field has been commonly used to visualize the data set which is invisible or is hard to explain. For instance, it could be used to visualize scientific data such as the direction and amount of wind and water field, transfer of heat through thermally conductive materials, and electromagnetic field. In this paper, we present a technique to enable intuitive recognition of the data though haptic feedback along with visual feedback. To add tactile information to graphical vector field, we model a haptic vector field and then apply it to the haptic map to guide a user to destination and haptic simulation of water field on 2D images whish can be used ill everyday life. These systems allow one to recognize vector information intuitively through haptic interface. We expect that the haptic rendering technique of vector field can be applied to various applications such as education, training, and entertainment.

  • A haptic device is regarded as the human machine interface technology for easier, more accurate, and intuitive operation. The purpose of this paper is to study how to improve the cognitive ability of the existing vehicle haptic device used only tactile feedback. In this study, usability evaluation used the multi-sensory feedback which is adding auditory feedback to the existing tactile feedback. The emotional factor that drivers have on the haptic device is extracted by the sensibility analysis. The result of study provides some consideration and direction to need in implementation of a haptic device and it also confirms their possibility meaningfully. And it is possible to suggest the design direction that satisfies the driver.

  • During the last decade, several Electronic Orientation Aids devices have been proposed to solve the autonomy problems of visually impaired people. When hearing is considered the primary sense for Visually Impaired people (VI) and it is generally loaded with the environment, the use of tactile sense can be considered a solution to transmit directional information. This paper presents a new wearable haptic system based on four motors implemented in shoes, while six directions can be played. This study aims to introduce an interface design and investigate an appropriate means of spatial information delivery through haptic sense. The first experiment of the proposed system was performed with 15 users in an indoor environment. The results showed that the users were able to recognize, with high accuracy, the directions displayed on their feet. The second experiment was conducted in an outdoor environment with five blindfolded users who were guided along 120 meters. The users, guided only by the haptic system, successfully reached their destinations. The potential of tactile-foot stimulation to help VI understand Electronic Orientation Aids (EOA) instructions was discussed, and future challenges were defined.

  • Human Robot Interaction(HRI) through a haptic interface plays an important role in controlling robot systems remotely. The augmented usage of bio-signals in the haptic interface is an emerging research area. To consider operator's state in HRI, we used bio-signals such as ECG and blood pressure in our proposed force reflection interface. The variation of operator's state is checked from the information processing of bio-signals. The statistical standard variation in the R-R intervals and blood pressure were used to adaptively adjust force reflection which is generated from environmental condition. To change the pattern of force reflection according to the state of the human operator is our main idea. A set of experiments show the promising results on our concepts of human adaptive interface.

  • This paper proposes the electric stimulus tactile apparatus system(TESTAS) loaded on the hap-tic interface using ultrasonic motors(USMs). To touch the virtual object like wall in graphic, the 6 DOF haptic interface provides force feedback to users as if it is real. But the case of sharp virtual object like a puncture, it could not provided the sense of pain, but only the reaction-force. After the TESTAS had been loaded on this haptic interface. it could Provide not only the force but also the pain to users. To estimate the capability of TESTAS, we did experiments of three cases, one was very sharp, another was dull, the other is continuative contact.

  • Virtual reality (VR) opened the possibility of moving beyond the 2-D world of conventional desktop systems to an immersive, multi-sensory environment generated by computer graphics. Haptic feedback (Haptics) is now starting to get recognition and use in intensive applications for manipulation, while smell and taste feedback are at the stage of early research. This paper reviews some current works on increased haptic feedback augmentation in virtual reality applications.
