  • Acupuncture has been used as a clinical treatment in Oriental medicine for various diseases. In the present study was carried out to investigate the effects of acupuncture and electrical stimulation on the change neuronal nitric oxide synthase(nNOS) immunoreactive cells in the periaqueductal gray(PAG) area of the male SD rats. Enhanced expression of nNOS was detected in the dorsolateral-PAG(DL-PAG) area of rat with stress by fixed body, and acupuncture and needle electrode electrical stimulation groups at Hapgok like acupoint decreased the stress-induced enhancement in the expression of nNOS. The present results demonstrate that acupuncture and needle electrode electrical stimulation is effective in the modulation of expression of nNOS in the DL-PAG area under stress conditions.

Methods : We reviewed the 16 studies about acupuncture treatment of tic disorder which were published from 2005 through 2007. We selected those studies from CNKI(中國知識基礎設施工程 http://www.cnki.net). Results : Selected 16 studies were divided into 8 case reports and 8 control studies. CCMD(6 studies) and DSM(4 studies) were frequently used in the diagnosis of tic disorder. Acupuncture points frequently used were (Naegwan, $PC_6$) and so on. According to specific parts of symptom, some acupuncture points were added. Most of studies reported that acupuncture treatments of tic disorder were very effective. Conclusions : There have been reported many acupuncture treatment studies of tic disorder in traditional chinese medicine. We believe that these studies could be applied to the clinical practices in Korea.

  • Objective This study aimed to analyze randomized controlled trials of the effect of acupuncture on Tourette syndrome and to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment. Methods Based on the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Pubmed search with the key search terms of 'Tourette syndrome, acupuncture', dated from 2000 to 2021, ten randomized controlled trials were identified and analyzed for this study. Results 1. The most commonly used acupoints were Taechung (LR3), Sinmun (HT7), Hapgok (LI4), Pungji (GB20) and Backhoe (GV20). 2. The most commonly used meridians were Bladder Meridian, Stomach Meridian and Gallbladder Meridian. 3. Acupuncture treatment was found to be significantly more or equally effective than western medicine such as haloperidol and tiapride. Conclusions Based on the results of the randomized controlled trials analyzed in this study, acupuncture was found to be effective in the treatment of Tourette syndrome. However, more clinical studies are needed to prove the effectiveness of acupuncture in Tourette syndrome.

  • Objectives The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of applying acupuncture as intervention of peripheral facial paralysis in children. Methods We conducted searches on China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Data using the keywords "facial paralysis", "children", and "acupuncture". Results Six randomized controlled trials were included in the analysis. The acupoints most frequently utilized were Hapgok (LI4), Jichang (ST4), Yangbaek (GB14), Sabaek (ST2), Hyeopgeo (ST6), Yeonghyang (LI20), Yepung (TE17), and Taeyang (EX-HN5). The Stomach Meridian (ST) was the most targeted. Acupuncture treatment was found to be as effective as or more effective than Western medicine treatment in certain cases. Conclusions Acupuncture therapy shows promise for treating pediatric peripheral facial paralysis. However, further clinical randomized controlled trials are necessary to validate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture treatment.

The aim of this study is to compare the effects between directional supplementation and draining method and twirling supplementation and draining. Methods : Clinical experiment was performed with 21 students of oriental medical college of Daegu Haany university. Acupuncture was applied at left Hapgok (LI4) with directional supplementation and twirling supplementation respectively, and the thermographic change was checked using DITI (Digital Infrared Thermographic Image). Results and Conclusion : A significant thermographic change was observed at bilateral Igan (LI2), Yanggye (LI5), Gokji (LI11), and Yeonghyang (LI20) in directional supplementation. A significant thermographic change was observed at bilateral Igan (LI2), Yanggye (LI5), and Yeonghyang (LI20) in twirling supplementation. Based on the thermographic change, it could be demonstrated that directional supplementation is more effective that twirling supplementation.

  • Objectives : In this case, the knee joint inconvenience with deteriorating pain has been relieved by acupuncture treatment for a patient was 51-year-old male with a left medial meniscal posterior horn rupture in 2012. Methods : Twenty-four times of acupuncture treatments were performed for Twelve weeks from July 2016 to improve the disease. SP8(Jigi; 地機), BL63(Geummun; 金門), KI3(Taegye; 太谿), LI4(Hapgok; 合谷) were chosen for treatment by principles of Traditional Korean Medicine. Results : Numeric Rating Scales, which means subjective pain, decreased from 6 points to 3 points out of 10 points in total. Pressure Pain Threshold, which means sensitivity to pressure applied to the affected area, increased from 21N to 47N on the lateral-inferior side and from 19N to 50N on the lateral side. K-WOMAC, which indicates discomfort of knee-related activity, was 56 points out of 96 points in total before treatment and 4 points after treatment, 13 points after two years, and 15 points after four years. However, MRI tests conducted before and after treatment did not identify any significant changes. As a result, we confirmed that a total of 24 acupuncture treatments had resulted in the relief objective and subjective pain and functional recovery, especially in the case of the knee function, maintained until after four years later. There was no significant substrate recovery in meniscal rupture.
