The Influence of Environmental Characteristics on the Fatness of Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in Hansan-Koje Bay (한산${\cdot}$거제만의 환경특성이 양식 굴의 비만에 미치는 영향)

  • Long line suspended culture of oysters has been started commercially in Hansan-Koje Bay since 1969. However, its Annual production has been decreased and culturing periods extended in recent years. So, we investigated environmental parameters and food organisms to identity the causes of poor fatness of oysters in Hansan-Koje Bay from February to November, 1994. As the result, the Water quality of Hansan-Koje Bay was found to be good for culture. For example, the mean concentration of COD was $1.35mg/\ell$, phosphate phosphorus was $0.30{\mu}g-at/\ell$ and dissolved inorganic nitrogen was $4.68{\mu}g-at/\ell$. However, the Hwado island and the inner part of the Hansan-Koje Bay were found to be eutrophicated due to various contaminants transported by land-based activities. But in the central pan of the Hansan-Koje Bay where the oyster farms Have been developed densely, the level of nutrient concentration was very low. During the study period, the dominant species of phytoplankton was Chaetoceros spp. with the percentage of $72.6\%\~87.8\%$ and the mean values of Chlorophyll-a concentration and phytoplankton standing crops were $2.05mg/m^3\;and\;188ind./m\ell$, respectively. The distribution of these parameters also showed similar trends those of nutrients. Especially, chlorophyll-a contents was very low with the concentration of below $0.5mg/m^3$ at central part of the Bay, Juklimpo. The fatness of oysters and the eutrophic index in this area were $18.1\%$ and 0.54, respectively. These values were lower than those of other culturing farms in the southern coastal areas in Korea. Therefore, we estimated that the insufficient food supply due to the low level of nutritional status was the major factors affecting the poor fatness of the Pacific oysters in Hansan-Koje Bay.

Characteristics of the Sedimentary Environment in Yoja Bay in the Summer of 1998 (1998년 하계 여자만의 저질환경 특성)

  • As a part of basic investigation to Fishery Purge Project for the Special Administrative in Chollanamdo Province, the sedimentary environmental characteristics of Yoja Bay at 15 stations were studied. The analysis was carried out in July, 1998, through studies of Loss On Ignition (LOI) by depth, Total Sulfide (T-5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations and Grain-size distribution. The LOI value was found to be 6.20-12.20% (mean of 8.89%), with the neighboring Sunhakri and Haksanri areas showing slightly higher values. These values were similar to the LOI values observed in the Hansan-Koje Bay and Jinju Bay areas on the southern coast of Korea. T-S and COD concentrations were found to be, respectively, 0.060-0.104 mg/gㆍd (mean of 0.052 mg/gㆍd) and 5.53-29.71 mg/gㆍd(mean of 13.24 mg/gㆍd), not exceeding eutrophication limits. T-S concentration was especially high at stations close to the central areas of the bay and inland areas, which caused by organic matter input from the nearby agricultural areas. COD concentration was very high at stations nearby the bay entrance and Doonbyungdo, but the mean value was lower than that of Hansan-Koje Bay. This leads us to believe that the level of pollution in Yoja Bay is not significant. The prevailing sediment composition was mud, consisting of 61.38% silt and 34.87% clay. Primary Production in the Osyter Farming Bay (굴 양식장 수역의 기초생산 연구)

  • The primary production of phytoplankton in oyster farming bays were seasonally measured by $^{14}C$ method in Hansan-Koje Bay and Kamagyang Bay for one year period. In Hansan-Koje Bay, mean daily prima production was $0.52gC/m^2/day\;(0.22{\~}1.02gC/m^2/day)$, and it was relatively high in summer and low in winter. Annual primary production was estimated to be $189gC/m^2/yr.$. Mean chlorophyll a content was $1.70mg/m^3$, and it was relatively high in summer. In Kamagyang Bay, mean daily prima production was $0.91gC/m^2/day(0.11{\~}3.61gC/m^2/day)$. and it was maximum in summer and minimum in fall. Annual primary production was estimated to be $334gC/m^2/yr$. Mean chlorophyll a concentration was $2.34mg/m^3$, and it was maximum in summer and relatively high in winter. Considering the water area of the two osyter farming bays, annual carbon production by phytoplankton were 9,450 ton in Hansan-Koje Bay and 37,000 ton in Kamagyang Bay. In general pattern of primary production in these bays, high production occurs in summer with increasing trend since spring.
