  • In this paper, we measured the radiation dose of a fuel handling machine of the CANDU type Wolsong nuclear reactor directly during operation, in spite of the high radiation level. In this paper we will describe the sensor development, measurement techniques, and results of our study. For this study, we used specially developed semiconductor sensors and matching dosimetry techniques for the mixed radiation field. MOSFET dosimeters with a thin oxide, that are tuned to a high dose, were used to measure the ionizing radiation dose. Silicon diode dosimeters with an optimum area to thickness ratio were used for the radiation damage measurements. The sensors are able to distinguish neutrons from gamma/X-rays. To measure the radiation dose, electronic sensor modules were installed on two locations of the fuel handling machine. The measurements were performed throughout one reactor maintenance cycle. The resultant annual cumulative dose of gamma/X-rays on the two spots of the fuel handling machine were 18.47 Mrad and 76.50 Mrad, and those of the neutrons were 17.51 krad and 60.67 krad. The measured radiation level is high enough to degrade certain cable insulation materials that may result in electrical insulation failure.

  • This paper focuses on the stability and operability of a man-machine system considering a human operator. Some papers' main interest has been the stability only, but the operability such as fatigue is also the other main interest. In a man-machine system, feelings such as motional, visual, and kinesthetic are important since those enable operators to work easily or fatigue operators. A model of a man-machine system has been developed. Motional, visual, and kinesthetic feelings may be considered as feedbacked sensor signals. We also have quantified the degree of fatigue with respect to reference operation. This is a performance index to be optimized. Several methods are presented to optimize the degree of fatigue and the stability of the integrated system. Examples are presented to show that the usefulness of the proposed modeling method and fatigue mitigating algorithm.

  • In this paper, fault tolerant mechanisms are presented for a servo manipulator system designed to operate in a hot cell. A hot cell is a sealed and shielded room to handle radioactive materials, and it is dangerous for people to work in the hot cell. So, remote operations are necessary to handle radioactive materials in the hot cell. KAERI has developed a servo manipulator system to perform such remote operations. However, since electric components such as servo motors are weak to radiations, fault tolerant mechanisms have to be considered. For fault tolerance of the servo manipulator system, hardware and software redundancy have been considered. In case of hardware, radioactive resistant electric components such as cables and connectors have been adopted and motors driving a transport have been duplicated. In case of software, a reconfiguration algorithm accommodating one motor's failure has been developed. The algorithm uses redundant axis to recover the end effector's motion in spite of one motor's failure.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of safe handling education of antineoplastic drug on knowledge and performance of clinical nurses. Methods: This was a nonequivalent control-group pretest-posttest study. A total of 49 nurses (25 for the experimental group and 24 for the control group) who dealt with antineoplastic drug within the previous 1 week participated in the study. The guidelines for safe handling of antineoplastic drugs and antineoplastic drugs side effects were provided to the experimental groups whereas only antineoplastic drugs side effects was given to the control groups. Knowledge and performance in reference to antineoplastic drug handling were measured before and 8-week after interventions. Results: The knowledge scores between the pretest and posttest were not statistically significant in both groups. However, the performance scores in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. Conclusion: The given education of safe handling of antineoplastic drugs had an effect on improving clinical nurses' performance. Thus this education could be routinely administered in practice for those who deal with antineoplastic drugs in their everyday practice.

  • This paper develops a 7 DOF vehicle model to study the effects of the active suspension on ride. The model is used to derive a control law for the active suspension using a full state linear optimal control technique. A wheelbase preview type active suspension is also considered in the control law derivation. The time delay between wheelbases is approximated using Pade approximation technique. The ride model is extended to a 14 DOF handling model. The 14 DOF handling model includes lateral, longitudinal, yaw and four wheel spin motions in addition to the 7 DOF ride model. A control law which is derived considering only ride related parameters is used to study the effects of the active suspension on a vehicle handling. J-turn maneuver simulation results show that the active suspension has a slower response in lateral acceleration and yaw rate, a bigger steady state lateral acceleration and an oversteer tendency. Lane changing maneuver simulation results show that the active suspension has a little bigger lateral acceleration but a much smaller roll angle and roll motion. Braking maneuver simulation results show that the active suspension has a much smaller pitch angle and pitch motion.

  • The use of smartphones has grown rapidly over a short period of time, particularly for commuting news search, smart banking, and social networking services, and has had a significant impact on the pattern of contemporary life. Further, a wide range of applications are downloaded on to smartphones. This has also led a considerable number of complaints regarding these applications. In this study, we focus on the levels of dissatisfaction that users experience with smartphone applications and their effects on consumer complaint behavior along with the moderating effects of the complaint handling process and attribution. The aim of this study is to verify whether the following hypothesis--2 (low/high dissatisfaction level of smartphone applications)${\times}2$ (poor/excellent complaint handling process)${\times}2$ (internal/external consumer attribution)--is in accordance with the betweengroup design to build a factorial design experiment. The results of this study are as follows. First, the consumer's tendency to complain significantly influenced their dissatisfaction level. Second, consumer complaint behavior is modulated by the complaint handling process. Third, the external-attribution tendency of consumers was found to lead to more dissatisfaction than the tendency for internal attribution.

  • As collaborative computing technology goes widespread, interactions among concurrent users are very important, especially in education domain. But existing co-authoring mechanisms and CSCW technologies have limitations for conflict handling. In general, co-authoring tools provide solutions that one or certain users' views are influenced for conflict handling. These solutions have advantages to accomplish rapidly for conflict handling, but other authors' views cannot be affected sufficiently. In this paper, we define the courseware as network structure of instructional units. And we propose co-authoring model for courseware using collaborative conflict-handling mechanism. Using this mechanism, instructors can affect their own viewpoints to the unique courseware. As contents created in these forms have multiple structures. it can provide proper materials according to students' requirements. Therefore, it can provide students with individual learning facilities on online educational systems. Proposed model is useful for courseware based on structured form of document such as XML.

  • Context-aware systems provide proper services for the user according to current contexts. However, it is not actively deployed in our daily lives as expected, due to many concerns including occurrences of exceptions. C++/C#/JAVA provide exception handling facilities for desktop computing programs, but context-aware system developers might feel far more difficult to make use of such general facilities, because it is hard to decide the timing and position of exception handling with various devices engaged. In this paper, we propose an exception detection and handling mechanism using device semantics and AspectJ so that it can constantly detect a large number of devices to allow the programmers to detect and handle exceptions with less burden.

  • Until now, considerable progress has been made in the application of range finding techanique performing direct 3-D measurement from the object. However, ther are few use of the method in the area of the application of material handing. We present a range finding vision system consisting of static and dynamic range finders to automate a reclaimer used for material handling. A static range finder detects range data of the front part of the piles of material, and a height map is obtained from the proposed image processing algorithm. The height map is used to calculate the optimal job path as features for required information for material handling function. A dynamic range finder attached on the side of the arm of the reclaimer detects the change of the local properties of the material with the handling function, which is used for avoiding collision and detecting the ending point for changing direction. the developed vision systm was applied to a 1/20 simulator and the results of test show that it is appropriate to use for automating the material handling.
