  • The purpose of this study was to verify the most effective spinal stabilization exercises program by comparing the activities of muscles contributing to spinal stabilization during four types of exercises using a sling and a mat. Twenty healthy males were recruited and each subjects performed four types of exercises. Exercise 1 was performed in a quadruped position with the subjects lifting the left arm and the opposite leg on the mat. Exercise 2 was performed in a prone position while holding a sling with the right hand and the left knee was fully extended while lifting the left arm and right leg. Exercise 3 was performed in quadruped position while holding a sling with one the right hand and lifting the opposite arm and leg. In exercise 4, subjects were instructed to maintain a balance push-up position while holding slings with both hands in 10 cm forward reaching with extended elbows. Electromyographic(EMG) activities were recorded from the multifidus, external oblique, internal oblique, abdominal rectus, and erector spinalis muscles during the exercises. The EMG amplitude of each muscle was normalized to the amplitude in the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of each muscle. Repeated ANOVA and Bonferroni's tests were used to compare the differences in the muscle activity according to the types of exercise. The EMG amplitudes of all the muscles were significantly different according to the types of exercises (p<.05). The highest EMG activities of each muscle was as follow; multifidus was 73.38%MVIC in exercise 3, the erector spinalis was 40.03%MVIC in exercise 3, the external oblique was 135.88%MVIC in exercise 4, the internal oblique was 128.60%MVIC in exercise 4, and the rectus abdominalis was 95.24%MVIC in Exercise 4. The types of exercises showed a significant difference in composition rate of EMG amplitudes of each muscle (p<.05). EMG composition rate of the multifidus was high in exercise 1 and 3. However, EMG composition rates of the external oblique, internal oblique, and the rectus abdominals were high in exercise 2 and 4. These results showed differences in EMG activities of muscles contributing to trunk stabilization during different therapeutic exercises. Therefore, the type of exercise should be carefully selected to effectively strengthen a specific trunk stabilizer.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the acceleration of vibration by the powered hand tools used in the shipbuilding industry, and to develop the prospective prevalence model for the hand-arm vibration syndrome among the shipbuilding workers. The acceleration levels and frequencies of six types of grinder were measured using the ISO5349 method along with the time of exposure to the vibration from the powered hand tools. Medical examination for 114 workers were performed using the cold provocation test. Comparisons were made between the estimated prevalence of hand-arm vibration syndrome from ISO5349 and the observed values from the medical examinations. By multiple regression, we developed the prospective prevalence model of hand-arm vibration syndrome produced by the hand tools used in the shipbuilding industry. 4 hour-energy-equivalent frequency-weighted accelerations were $6.23m/s^2$ in the grinding job done after welding, and $13.39m/s^2$ in the grinding job done before painting. The mean exposure time while holding powered hand tools was 4.64 hours. Prevalence rates of Raynaud's Phenomenon were 12.04% in the grinding after soldering, and 42.9% in the grinding before painting measured using the ISO5349 method. After exposure to vibration for 10.79 years, about a half of the workers in the grinding after welding could developed Raynaud's Phenomenon. For the workers in the grinding before painting, the latency was 5.02 years. The ISO equation for dose response relationship was not significantly correlated with observed recovery rates of finger skin temperatures, blood flows and amplitudes of nerve conduction velocities. A multiple regression model for dose-response relationship was proposed from the results. Recovery rate of the skin temperatures = -0.668+ 0.337 ${\times}$ 4 hour energy equivalent frequency-weighted accelerations + 0.767 ${\times}$ duration of vibration exposure(years) The validity was proved by multiple regression analysis after correlation transformation and regression results based on model-building data and validation data.

  • The sintering and renitridation behaviors of ultrafine Si3N4 powder compacts, which were heavily oxidized and/or free-Si rich, were investigated with particular attentiion to microstructures. The specimens were heated without restoring to additives and pressure by controlling heating process attained a Xe image apparatus. The effect of particle size, free-Si contents, decomposition and renitridation, were investigated. When fired to 1$650^{\circ}C$ within 15 sec and then immediately held at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 10min N2 atmosphere, significant densification took place in the limited region, in addition to decreasing oxygen contents to less than 0.3wt%. On the other hand, specimens decomposed due to overheating at the initial stage were rapidly renitridated at the relatively lower temperature of the holding stage. And, then, the activation energy for the renitridation was calculated to be 49kcal/mole.

  • Agriculture in Swaziland is the most important sector of the economy from the stand point of export earning, rural employment and dependency for family food. But, inspite of 65.5 percent of the household being busy in food production for family consumption in Swaziland, the import bill of food and live animals is rising from E119.7268 million in 1987/90 (An.St.Bul.1988) . A typical farm size, based on holding's growing crops, is only 1.93 ha which may prohibit owning a four wheel tractor for farm operations. The traditional hand tools are just not efficient and comfortable to operate in order to exploit full potential of the land. There are over 120.000 draught animals which have potential to be utilized in farming. The two wheel-tractor is another energy source which can be used for many farm-operations.

  • In this paper, we find optimal policy for the (Q, r) inventory model under the lead time uncertainty. The (Q, r) inventory model is such that the fixed order quantity Q is placed whenever the level of on hand stock reaches the reorder point r. We first develop the single level inventory model as the basis for the analysis multi-level distribution systems. The functional problem is to determine when and how much to order in order to minimize the expected total cost per unit time, which includes the set up, inventory holding and inventory shortage cost. The model, then, is extended to the multi-level distribution system consisting of the factory, warehouses and retailers. In this case, we also find an optimal policy which minimizes the total cost of the contralized multi-level distribution system.

  • YBCO HTS thick films coated using powder, Y$_2$O$_3$+L, quenched over 1200$^{\circ}C$ was studied. Quenched powder was crushed and mixed well in order to obtain uniformly dispersed Y2ll. Also, the powder was prepared with various condition in other to acquire optimum micro structure. As a result, it was found that the quenched sample on 1300$^{\circ}C$, holding time of 30min, has a bettor characteristic than other sample. On the other hand, the effect of film thickness was investigated. We concluded that the initiate film thickness has to be over 150$\mu\textrm{m}$. Especially, it was found that the film coated over 3 times with 50$\mu\textrm{m}$ m was best quality.

  • In many areas of technology there are machines and systems controllable in up to six degrees of freedom. Helicopters and underwater vehicles, industrial robots are among the first representatives of this category. They need six degrees of freedom in order to move and orient within their workspace. An even broader and more explosively growing area is 3D computer graphics and virtual environment. In this work, functions of 3D input device are described and two types of commercial 3D input device are presented. Then, a preliminary experiment of a low cost 6 axis force/moment sensor is presented that can also be sued as a 3D input device. A low cost force/moment sensor and its application in robot teaching experiment is described. It computes the direction of 3 components of the force and 3 components of the moment applied by human holding the sensor by hand. The concept is shown by an experiment where the tool position and orientation of a robot in 3 dimensional space is controlled by the proposed sensor.

  • The main focus of this study is to investigate the performance of a clark-scarf type multi-echelon serial supply chain operating with a base-stock policy and to optimize the inventory levels in the supply chains so as to minimize the systemwide total inventory cost, comprising holding and backorder costs as all the nodes in the supply chain. The source of supply of raw materials to the most upstream node, namely supplier, is assumed to have an infinite raw material availability. Retailer faces random customer demand, which is assumed to be stationary and normally distributed. If the demand exceeds on-hand inventory, the excess demand is backlogged. Using the echelon stock and demand quantile concepts and an efficient simulation technique, we derive near optimal inventory policy. Additionally we discuss the derived results through the extensive experiments for different supply chain settings.

  • To examine how London energy controls the c-dimensions of phyllosilicates, London energy, as well as Coulomb and Pauli repulstion energy was calculated as a function of d(001) for 1M and d(002) for 2M 1 phyllosilicates. London and Pauli repulstion energy calcualtion use a direct interaction calculation method and Coulomb energy calculation adopts Fourier synthesis method. The energy calculations show that Coulmb and Pauli repulsion energy dominantly control the c-dimensions of phyllosilicates having the interlayer cationss, i.e., the layer charges. On the other hand, if phyllosilicates have no interlayer cations, London energy is solely responsible for holding the layers and maintain the c-dimensions. The significance of London energy in determining the c-dimensions of phyllosislicates de-creases as the layer charge increases. When the layer charge is lower than one equivalent on the basis of Oη(OH)2 formula, London energy plays an important role in determing the c-dimensions. however, if the layer charge is higher than one equivalent, London energy becomes insignifi-cant in determining the c-dimension.
