  • Background: A pressure ulcer is common in soft tissue over the greater trochanter (GT) in side-lying position, and sustained tissue deformation induced by the prolonged external force is a primary cause, which can be discussed with soft tissues' viscoelastic properties (i.e., stress relaxation, creep response). Objects: Using an automated hand-held indentation device, we measured the viscoelastic properties of soft tissue over the hip area, in order to examine how the properties are affected by site with respect to the GT. Methods: Twenty participants (15 males and 5 females) who aged from 21 to 32 were participated. An automated hand-held indentation device was used to measure the stress relaxation time and creep response. Trials were acquired for three different locations with respect to the GT (i.e., right over the GT, 6 cm anterior or posterior to the GT). For each location, five trials were acquired and averaged for data analyses. Results: Soft tissues' stress relaxation time and creep response were associated with site (F = 23.98, p < 0.005; F = 24.09, p < 0.005; respectively). The stress relaxation time was greatest at posterior gluteal region (19.22 ± 2.49 ms), and followed by anterior region (15.39 ± 2.47 ms) and right over the GT (14.40 ± 3.18 ms). Similarly, creep response was greatest at posterior gluteal region (1.16 ± 0.14), and followed by anterior region (0.95 ± 0.14) and right over the GT (0.89 ± 0.18). Conclusion: Our results showed that the stress relaxation and creep were greatest at the posterior gluteal region and least at right over the GT, indicating that the gluteal soft tissue is more protective to the prolonged external force, when compared to the trochanteric soft tissue. The results suggest that a risk of pressure ulcer over the GT may decrease with slightly posteriorly rotated side-lying position.

  • Purpose : We aimed to evaluate the impact of a exercise with kinect-based mixed reality device (KMR) on physical function, upper extremity disability, fatigue, and quality of life in breast cancer survivors. We hypothesized that this exercise program would improve physical function, physical activity, fatigue, and quality of life. Methods : Thirty-nine breast cancer survivors were randomized to either the KMR exercise group (KE) or the home stretch group (HS). The KE participated in 8 weeks of exercise, exercising 3 times per week, while the HS performed 8 weeks of stretching exercises, also 3 times per week. Before and after the intervention period, participants underwent assessments of physical function, including body composition, chester step test (CST), and hand grip strength (HGS). Additionally, participants completed questionnaires including the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ), disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) questionnaire, and functional assessment of cancer therapy-breast (FACT-B) questionnaire to measure their physical activity levels, upper extremity disability, and quality of life, respectively. Results : Overall, significant improvements were observed in several shoulder movements, body weight, and physical activity, with no significant interaction effects between groups and time. Furthermore, there was a significant group by time interaction for body weight, left flexion, right flexion, right abduction, and left adduction, as well as for upper extremity disability (K-DASH) and quality of life (FACT-B). Conclusion : In conclusion, the KMR exercise program was found to be effective at improving physical function, upper extremity disability, quality of life, and overall well-being in breast cancer survivors. The significant improvements observed in multiple measures and the significant group by time interactions for various outcomes highlight the potential benefits of this KMR exercise program in promoting a better quality of life for breast cancer survivors.

  • The natural user interface/experience (NUI/NUX) is used for the natural motion interface without using device or tool such as mice, keyboards, pens and markers. Up to now, typical motion recognition methods used markers to receive coordinate input values of each marker as relative data and to store each coordinate value into the database. But, to recognize accurate motion, more markers are needed and much time is taken in attaching makers and processing the data. Also, as NUI/NUX framework being developed except for the most important intuition, problems for use arise and are forced for users to learn many NUI/NUX framework usages. To compensate for this problem in this paper, we didn't use markers and implemented for anyone to handle it. Also, we designed multi-modal NUI/NUX framework controlling voice, body motion, and facial expression simultaneously, and proposed a new algorithm of mouse operation by recognizing intuitive hand gesture and mapping it on the monitor. We implement it for user to handle the "hand mouse" operation easily and intuitively.

  • Recently, a system that supports efficient interaction, a human machine interface (HMI), has become a hot topic. In this paper, we propose a new real time low-cost hand gesture control system as one of vehicle interaction methods. In order to reduce computation time, depth information was acquired using a time-of-flight (TOF) camera because it requires a large amount of computation when detecting hand regions using an RGB camera. In addition, fourier descriptor were used to reduce the learning model. Since the Fourier descriptor uses only a small number of points in the whole image, it is possible to miniaturize the learning model. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed technique, we compared the speeds of desktop and raspberry pi2. Experimental results show that performance difference between small embedded and desktop is not significant. In the gesture recognition experiment, the recognition rate of 95.16% is confirmed.

  • With Brain Computer Interface (BCI) system, a person with disabled limb could use this direct brain signal like electroencephalography (EEG) to control a device such as the artifact arm. The precise force control for the artifact arm is necessary for this artificial limb system. To understand the relationship between control EEG signal and the gripping force of hands, We proposed a study by measuring EEG changes of three grades (25%, 50%, 75%) of hand grip MVC (Maximal Voluntary Contract). The acquired EEG signal was filtered to obtain power of three wave bands (alpha, beta, gamma) by using fast fourier transformation (FFT) and computed power spectrum. Then the power spectrum of three bands (alpha, beta and gamma) of three classes (MVC 25%, 50%, 75%) was classified by using PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis). The result showed that the power spectrum of EEG is increased at MVC 75% more than MVC 25%, and the correct classification rate was 52.03% for left hand and 77.7% for right hand.

  • Netflix Original movies have distinctive characteristics in that it is screened online only and viewers have to watch movies using their personal devices. By analyzing the haptic characteristics of Netflix platform from remediation perspective, we examine how Netflix hypermediacy haptic characteristics associated with clicking or touching expand to immediacy haptic characteristics, and compare the differences between Netflix original movie (2020) and film movie (1940). Through this, it points out the connection between the sense of the hand that requires clicking or touching and the description of the hand in Netflix original movie . As the individual interface of the personal device has been adjusted to make it possible to watch movies, the position of the hand becomes important in watching movies, and the hand plays an essential role in the beginning, middle, and end of the movie. Therefore, this study, which focuses on the haptic characteristics of Netflix original movie , is meaningful in that it studied the characteristics of the OTT original movie that was not previously covered and that the haptic characteristic plays an important role in the way of watching OTT contents.

  • Recyclable wastes coming into material recovery facilities(MRFs) is mostly packed by plastic bag or sack bag. Bag rupturing device is essential to improve capacity and efficiency of MRFs. Bag opening works of MRFs is mostly done by numerous workers and shredder-type bag rupturing device. It often makes a problems; decreased capacity, shredded recyclables, worker safety by explosion and broken glasses, etc. In the present work, bag rupturing device with octagonal rotating blade drums has been developed to solve the existing problems and environment assessment is also performed during operation of the device. Capacity of the device was about 5.6 ton/hr at 8.2 rpm of drum revolution speed and 1.25 m/min of belt conveyor speed. It satisfied initial designed capacity(5.0 ton/hr) and max. capacity 8.8 ton/hr was achieved at 12.5 rpm of drum revolution speed and 1.50m/min of belt conveyor speed. Bag rupturing efficiencies on outer and inner bag were obtained at 100% and about 95.6% as average, respectively and original form of glass bottles in the bag was maintained without broken by about 96.5%. This result shows that the safety in hand sorting by the workers could be improved. As result of environmental assessment on the noise, vibration and particulates, the measured levels on noise, vibration and particulates show the below standard regulatory limits. It could be concluded that the problems of existing devices in MRFs could be solved by adopting the bag rupturing device with octagonal rotating blade drums in on-site operation.

  • The mortise view radiography procedure is an ankle joint examination and observes the presence of trauma, sprain, or dislocation suspected in the ankle joint. The auxiliary equipment used during the mortise view radiography procedure can generate artifacts in the radiograph images and is not diverse enough to be custom-made for each patient; not cost-efficient. The purpose of this study is to create a custom assistive device to support mortise view radiography procedure. This study utilized 3D printing technology to create the mortise view radiography procedure assistive device (ShinHan Device; SHD). The lengths of the tibiotalar joint (TTJ), talar calcaneal joint (TCJ), and medial joint (MJ) were measured and evaluated by five researchers using both SHD and the prototype Hologic tool. The mean ranges were found to be 39.42-39.47 mm for TTJ, 31.41-31.57 mm for TCJ, and 21.21-21.23 mm for MJ while using SHD device. On the other hand, the measurements showed mean ranges of 39.73-39.79 mm for TTJ, 31.46-31.50 mm for TCJ, and 21.31-21.35 mm for MJ while using the Hologic tool. Based on this study results, the error ranges at all positions decreased by 24% for TTJ, 17% for TCJ, and 36% for MJ when using SHD device compared to the Hologic tool. Moreover, when SHD was used, it allowed for a highly reproducible examination posture (ICC = 0.99), and it enabled the acquisition of radiograph images without artifacts, which were present in the Hologic tool.

  • A magneto-rheological(MR) fluid based rotary loading and braking device is developed. The loading and braking forces of the device are accurately adjustable by controlling the yield stress of MR fluid, so that the vibration control, the precision position control and the speed control of rotating machines equipped with the device can be achieved. As an engineering application, constant rotational speed regulation is conducted using the device manufactured in laboratory, introducing PI control action not only with varying torque due to gravitation, with initial angular speed, but also with constant external torque made by hand. To do this, first, mathematical model was obtained via experiments. And then, simulation was carried out, based on the experimentally identified model. Its result was confirmed through experiment. It is identified by simulation and experimental results that PI action leads to satisfactory control performance in both cases that varying torque due to gravitation, with initial angular speed, and constant external torque are applied.

  • Most of the seeds of cucurbitaceous rootstock species used for grafting were mainly sown by hand. This study was carried out to develop an on-line discriminating algorithm of seed direction using machine vision and an automatic seeding system. The seeding system was composed of a supplying device, feeding device, machine vision system, reversing device, seeding device and system control section. Machine vision was composed of a color CCD camera, frame grabber, image inspection chamber, lighting and personal computer. The seed image was segmented into a region of seed part and background part using thresholding technique in which H value of HSI color coordinate system. A seed direction was discriminated by comparing position between the center of circumscribed rectangle to a seed and the center of seed image. It took about 49ms to identify and redirect seed. Line-up status of seed was good the more than 95% of a sowed seed. Seeding capacity of this system was shown to be 10,140 grains per hour, which is three times faster than that of a typical worker.
