This study was to investigate phytoplankton communities and to evaluate the effects of hydrological and physical-chemical environmental factors in major five dam reservoirs in the Han River water system. Annual average of chlorophyll a concentration in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam was higher than that of Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong. The opposite seasonal variation patterns of phytoplankton growth were observed in dam reservoirs; the highest biomass in spring of dry season in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong which are the river-type reservoirs and Lake Doam where turbidity was high throughout the year, and in summer and autumn of rainy season in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which are the lake-type reservoirs, indicating that the seasonal pattern for growth of phytoplankton in on-river reservoirs is mainly determined by hydrologic characteristics. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam, where the concentration of nutrients was relatively high, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima in Lake Paldang and Lake Cyeongpyeong and Nitzschia spp. in Lake Doam throughout all season. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which showed the oligo-mesotrophic state, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Cyclotella pseudostelligera in spring and winter, but Cyanophyceae such as Microcystis spp. in summer.

In order to understand the relationship of depositional environment between fluvial and estuarine-embayment in Han River system, including depositional change in main Han River, more than 250 bottom sediment and 70 suspended sediment were analyzed with hydrologic data. Based on the previous data, the study area can be divided into two environment(fluvial and estuarine-embayment) by Singok underwater dam. The gravelly facies occurs in the South and North Han Rivers and sandy and silty facies occupies in the main Han River. Depositional environment of main Han River changed mainly because of limited sediment transport and hydrological condition. In the estuarine-embayment environment, coarse-grained sediments are dominant in tidal channel and of shore whereas fine and poorly sorted sediments are observed in coastal area. During moderate period, relationship between fluvial-estuarine-embayment system is discontinuou s because of flow restriction by artificial construction such as dam and underwater dam, so that each river system characterizes the individual environment. Fluvial and estuarine system is influenced by tide and, thus, transition zone of estuarine- embayment system moves landward. During flooding period, however, each river system is integrated as continuous depositional system by high discharge and, thus, transition zone of fluvial-estuarine-embayment system moves seaward. For further detailed systems about the lower Singok under-water dam, joint research of South-North Korea should be necessary.
Scale is formed when hard water is heated or cooled in heat transfer equipments such as heat exchangers, condensers, evaporators, cooling towers, boilers, and pipe walls. When scale deposits in a heat exchanger surface, it is traditionally called fouling. The objective of the present study is to investigate the formation of fouling in a heat exchanging system. A lab-scale heat exchanging system is built-up to observe and measure the formation of fouling experimentally. Water analyses are conducted to obtain the properties of HAN river water. In the present study a microscopic observation is conducted to visualize the process of scale formation. Hardness of HAN-river water is higher than that of tap water in Seoul.
The Han river flowing the southern boundary of Hangyang city wall was known for scenic remote villa spot. This research is about a study on the historical and cultural landscape value of Apgujung built on hills of the Han river by Han Myeong Hoe in the mid-15th century. The results are as follows. First, the Han river has been a cultural poetical place. Second, the pavilion of west river was built as thatched roof at 1454-1456, while that of east river was erected as grand villa at 1469-1473. Third, there are characteristics of periodical landscape and origin was included on historical and cultural landscape, therefore, Apgujuing-dong has been recognized with the story. Han river where Apgujung was built has beautiful water landscape in spite of the landscape of modem downtown. Fourth, there are placeness and Han river of main landscape text streams nearby Apgujung site. Historical and cultural landscape of Apgujung should be changed, but, the landscape value could be progressed with the application as cultural contents while the Han river flows. It could be cultivated on the application of various culture contents and story of Apgujung when the historical landscape of water system be restored in Han river.

Tan-Sui River Basin covers Taipei metropolitan area of 2,726 square kilometers with more than six million residents. Since 1988, Taiwan government started to plan and construct an integrated sewerage system, consisted by both separated and concentrated trunk sewers, wastewater treatment plants and ocean outfalls. This presentation will introduce the master plan and major facilities of Tan-Sui River Basin sewerage system. Other measures to protect general water quality and the environment of adjacent river basin area of Tan-Sui River and her tributaries by Taiwan EPA will be presented as well.
Odor compounds (geosmin, 2-MIB) have been causing problems in the Bukhan River system, but the causative organisms have not been clearly identified. To evaluate the relationship between dynamics of microbial community and odor compounds, two times monthly monitoring of water quality and microbial community from the three serial lakes (Lake Uiam, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Paldang) in the Bukhan River system were conducted from April to October 2017. The odor compounds were analyzed by HS-SPME analysis method using GC/MS. Bacteria communities were identified at the class level by NGS analysis. Actinobacteria and Betaproteobacteria were dominant taxon in bacteria community of three serial lakes. In the case of phytoplankton communities showed that seasonal changes by Bacillariophyceae and Cryptophyceae in spring, Cyanobacteria in summer, and Bacillariophyceae and Cryptophyceae in autumn. Dominant species was Dolichospermum (=Anabaena), Microcystis and Pseudanabaena in Bukhan River system in all study period. At the same time the odors geosmin and 2-MIB were also detected at high concentration. There is a significant positive correlation between proportion of Actinobaceria and 2-MIB concentration (r=0.491, p<0.01). In addition, proportion of cyanobacteria showed a significant correlation of geosmin (r=0.381, p<0.05) and 2-MIB (r=0.386, p<0.05) concentration. In this study, odor compounds in the Bukhan River system are considered to be a direct relationship between with Actinobacteria and cyanobacteria.
The performance of a heat pump using river water as a heat source was compared with that of a conventional air-conditioner for cooling and a boiler system for heating. The heat pump system using river water considered the 1-stage cycle for cooling and the 2-stage cycle for heating. The COPs of the river water source heat pump were $0.5{\sim}1.1$ higher than those of the conventional system in the cooling season. The LCC of the river water source heat pump system was lower 13.5% and 32.4% than that of the conventional system I and II. In addition, when the initial cost ratios of the river water source heat pump system to the conventional system I and II were less than 1.2 and 1.4, respectively, an acceptable payback was found to be less than 5 years.
To facilitate the carriage of goods and products, an improvement of the transportation system is greatly needed in Korea. The construction of the Kyung Bu canal that can traverse over the wide area of southern Korea os proposed to be one of the most favorable choices to resolve this need. To fulfill this plan, we investigated the possibility of connecting the Han River (in the midwest) with the Nak-tong River (in the southeast) via the Cho-ryeong tunnel (20.5 km long and 125 m high). According to topographic and geological mapping analysis, we are capable of selecting the optimal locations for the tunnels and locking systems. The water requirement for high locking systems can be satisfied by constructing additional dams above the Choong-ju area or by introducing water saving lock system. The results of our investigation support the idea such a canal system, if constructed, could lead to a revolution of the Korea's transportation system.
A monthly Ensemble Streamflow Prediction (ESP) system was developed by applying a daily rainfall-runoff model known as the Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation (SSARR) model to the Han, Nakdong, and Seomjin River basins in Korea. This study first assesses the accuracy of the averaged monthly runoffs simulated by SSARR for the 3 basins and proposes some improvements. The study found that the SSARR modeling of the Han and Nakdong River basins tended to significantly underestimate the actual runoff levels and the modeling of the Seomjin River basinshowed a large error variance. However, by implementing optimal linear correction (OLC), the accuracy of the SSARR model was considerably improved in predicting averaged monthly runoffs of the Han and Nakdong River basins. This improvement was not seen in the modeling of the Seomjin River basin. In addition, the ESP system was applied to forecast probabilistic runoff forecasts one month in advance for the 3 river basins from 1998 to 2003. Considerably improvement was also achieved with OLC in probabilistic forecasting accuracy for the Han and Nakdong River basins, but not in that of the Seomjin River basin.
This study was to develop a tow-dimensional model system for the hydrodynamic analysis and to apply the system on the downstream of Han River. it is performed to design a GIS-based hydrodynamic system for the scientific shallow water profile analysis, and to compare hydrodraulic modeling is the Petrov-Galerkin's finite element method for flow prediction model. This study was to construct a GIS-based river flow system, and it is useful for supporting user's decision making for the on-line status through various analysis. We expect that the results from this study can be used as one of the guidelines for river analysis and management system in order rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries.
