  • The water quality simulation was carried out to predict water quality in Tan stream of the Han river using water quality model, QUAL2E. In the end, the future variations in water quality of Tan stream were simulated and the prediction of the impacts of Tan stream on water quality in the Han river was carried out by applying the Tan stream simulation results into the model. The results are as follows. The predicted results of future water quality of Tan stream suggested that the concentrations of BOD, T-N and T-P at Chungdam bridge would increase to 0.68~0.77 mg/$\ell$, 1.33~1.62 mg/$\ell$ and 0.05~0.06 mg/$\ell$, respectively in 2006 and 2011 and that with the implementation of advanced treatment in Sungnam and Tanchun sewage treatment plants, the concentration of T-N would be reduced more as the amount of treated sewage increase, while the concentration of T-P would stay 0.49 mg/$\ell$. The results obtained from simulation of the impacts of future Tan stream water quality improvement on the main stream of the Han river showed that with implementation of advanced treatment in both Sungnam and Tanchun sewage treatment plants, the concentration of T-N, T-P and chlorophyll-a at Hangang bridge and Heangju bridge would be reduced by 11.6%, 7.7% and 20.9%, respectively in 2..6 and by 13.6%, 9.4% and 22.2%, respectively in 2011, which indicates that the effect on the reduction of T-N and T-P would be relatively significant while the effect on the decrease of algae would be slight.

  • Stream and groundwater qualities of two rural watershes in the upper North Han river basin were monitored for 14months. Six to eight stream sampling sites and two to there groundwater monitoring wells were chosen and water samples were regularyl collected and analyzed with respect to total nitrogen(T-N), total phosphorus(T-P) and total suspended solids(TSS). Monitoring data were graphically analyzed with respect to time.Rainfall amout and intensity seemed to have an impact on stream T-N and T-P concentration changes. TSS concentrations were generally lower than the first class stream water quality standared, Both stream and groundwater qualities near livesstock feetlot areas were degraded indicating the feedlots have an impact on water quality.

  • The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is an apex predator of the riparian ecosystem. It is a keystone and an indicator species; consequently, its presence suggests a sustainable water environment. Otter is a keystone species as a predator at the top of the food web in the aquatic environment and an indicator species representing the health of the aquatic environment. Although Eurasian otters disappeared from the Han River urban water system because of anthropogenic activities like habitat destruction, poaching, and environmental pollution in the 1980s, the species were sighted in the Cheonggye Stream, Jungrang Stream, and Seongnae Stream, which are urban sections of the Han River, in 2016 and 2021. Therefore, it is pertinent to assess the habitat potential in the area for conservation and management measures to ensure its permanent presence. However, existing studies on otter habitats focused on natural rivers and reservoirs, and there is a limit to applying them to habitats artificially confined habitats in narrow spaces such as tributaries in urban areas of the Han River. This study selected the Cheonggye Stream, an artificially restored urban stream, to evaluate its potential as a habitat for Eurasian otters in urban water environments using the habitat suitability index (HSI). The HSI was calculated with selected environment attributes, such as the cover, food, and threat, that best describe the L. lutra habitat. According to the results, the confluence area of Seongbuk Stream and Cheonggye Stream and the confluence area of Cheonggye Stream and Jungnang Stream were suitable otter habitats, requiring appropriate conservation efforts. The HSI model suggests a valuable method to assess the habitat quality of Eurasian otters in urban water environments. The study is crucial as it can help rehabilitate the species' populations by identifying and managing potential Eurasian otter habitats in highly urbanized areas of the Han River basin and its tributaries.

  • Currently, melamine is being used variously in our lives such as resins, flame retardants, adhesive, laminate etc. And understandably sewer of stream of wastewater containing Melamine has also increased. GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) of EU safety guidelines says that it can cause cancer. Still, study on toxicity of Melamine is going on. In this research, melamine contamination level of the Han River and River Basin was analyzed by HPLC/UV. And the experiments of GAC adsorption were conducted and the model was studied. We collected the 3 same samples at the suburbs of Paldang Dam located in the relative upstream in Han River and Ttukseom amusement park, the downstream region and collected samples equally at the Hongreung stream, Wangsuk stream, Cheonggye stream among streams flowing into Han River and then measured Melamine concentration after purification. As a result, melamine was not detected at the suburbs of Paldang Dam and it was detected at Ttukseom amusement park, the downstream of it, in the concentration of $0.312{\mu}g/L$. The Wangsuk stream with $0.578{\mu}g/L$ highest Cheonggye stream and Hongreung stream was detected with each $0.197{\mu}g/L$ and $0.325{\mu}g/L$. Although the concentration was low in general, melamine detection could be checked at most point. In 1970, the world capacity of Melamine was estimated at 200,000 ton, with current production estimated to be 1,400,000 ton. Melamine of Han River and rivers flowing into Han River is present at low concentration but pollution will increase in the future due to increase of use. Depending on the size of activated carbon in the experiment were slightly different. But the breakthrough model is almost identical.

  • The Anyang stream is one of the Han river in Seoul Metropolitan area. It is 35.1km long, has a basin area of $282.26km^2$ and touches seven cities of Kyounggido and some of Seoul Metropolitan area. The situations of Anyang stream have resulted in severe stream water pollution problems. The purpose of this study were to measure the hydraulic characteristics and water quality, to make the countermeasures to achieve the stream water quality, to suggest the future conditions to improve water quality trough the Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Modal(WASP4). As the result of Anyang stream water quality forecsat, they are follows. Sewerage systems in the watershed of the Anyang stream have to be amended for wrong systemn and constructed in the upstream area of Anyang. The discharge of industrial wastewater has to be throughly controlled from the upstream area of the Anyang stream. Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Model(WASP4) for this study revealed the future water quality of the Anyang stream by computer simulation.

  • This study reviewed the applicability of the existing flood discharge calculation method on Jeju Island Han Stream and compared this method with observation results by improving the mediating variables for the Han Stream. The results were as follows. First, when the rain-discharge status of the Han Stream was analyzed using the flood discharge calculation method of the existing design (2012), the result was smaller than the observed flood discharge and the flood hydrograph differed. The result of the flood discharge calculation corrected for the curve number based on the terrain gradient showed an improvement of 1.47 - 6.47% from the existing flood discharge, and flood discharge was improved by 4.39 - 16.67% after applying the new reached time. In addition, the sub-basin was set separately to calculate the flood discharge, which yielded an improvement of 9.92 - 32.96% from the existing method. In particular, the steepness and rainfall-discharge characteristics of Han Stream were considered in the reaching time, and the sub-basin was separated to calculate the flood discharge, which resulted in an error rate of -8.77 to 8.71%, showing a large improvement of 7.31 - 28.79% from the existing method. The flood hydrograph also showed a similar tendency.

  • The TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) has been used to determine the water quality target. LDC (Load Duration Curve) based on hydrology has been used to support water quality assessments and development of TMDL. Also FDC (Flow Duration Curve) analysis can be used as a general indicator of hydrologic condition. The LDC is developed by multiplying FDC with the numeric water quality target of the factor for the pollutant of concern. Therefore, this study was to create LDC using the stream flow data and numeric water quality target of BOD and T-P in order to evaluate the pollutant load characterization by flow conditions in Heukcheon stream. When it is to be a high-flows condition, BOD and T-P are necessary to manage. BOD and T-P did not satisfy the numeric water quality target for both seasons (spring and summer). In order to meet the numeric water quality target in Heukcheon stream, management of non point source pollutant is much more important than that of point source pollutant control.

  • Anyang Stream including its main branch is the biggest branch stream of Han River in Korea. The geological and geomorphological characteristics were investigated to the affected area of Anyang Stream, in which rainfall characteristic was analyzed. The water quality surveyed that the analysis of water pollution used to biotic index and biological water pollution. The rainfall pattern in this area was like to that of typical Korea, but the rate of trigger and runoff during summer season(June~August) is more higher than mean of Korea. Before 2003, a dried stream is severe status, which was due to abundant runoff, but this status are improved. After 1997, water quality of stream is recovering status such as water pollution of stream steeply decreased. Especially after 2003, this trend is more quickly improved. Although, owing to the increasing of a T-N and SS at upstream wastewater were due to bad collection of industrial factories, livestock's and mans living, the water quality worsted at upstream. Water quality in total section of main stream was severely contaminated that water-quality limit is 5 with polysaprobic by water self-purification. That of main branch was 1~3limits with ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic in Anyang city area, But water quality in all area about another branch of Anyang stream except Anyang city area was almost under of 3 grades. Though trying of Anyang city for recover movement(completion of 2nd Sewage Treatment Plant and Water supply pipe system) on Anyang stream, water pollution states of upper branch in Anyang stream was not better than its of 2002 because it may be difference of control area on other cities.

  • The objective of this planning proposal is to rehabilitate the urban stream which has been ecologically disturbed in the urban process. The experimental stream, Su-am stream located in Anyang City is typical urban stream in adjacent land use and the spatial condition. The stream in the watershed context, is the second tributary of Han River, in the Anyangcheon watershed. The Characteristics of the stream reach were analyzed by the river corridor survey. In the conceptual phase, Rehabilitation Programs were established based on the hydrological, ecological and spatial characteristics of the stream. Spatial zoning concept according to the characteristics of the stream and adjacent land use, was suggested 4 types of zoning; ecological preservation zone, natural landscape zone, neighborhood water-friendly zone and CBD water-friendly zone. Implementation Practices can be summarized as follow: For The longitudinal river continuum, some In-stream practices were suggested and implemented; such as channel alignment, step & pool, pool & riffle and low-flow channel bank. For latitudinal continuum and intimate spatial relationship between Sam-duk Park & Su-am stream, gentle sloped bank was planned and implemented. After stream improvement & ecological Implementation, follow-up monitoring and adaptive management programs will be a meaningful process for ecological rehabilitation.
