The significance of Han medicine (韓醫學), the Korean traditional medicine, that has lasted throughout the past couple millenniums relies upon Han Philosophy distinguished by its uniqueness. In brief, the specificity of Han medicine is characterized by unity of spirit and body, part and whole. According to this theory, when curing a frozen shoulder, it is usually cured by acupuncturing the area around the part that aches, but also doing so on the area that is totally different from the aching part such as the opposite part of the body. In fact, this can be pursued only through aspects that enable one to realize the unity of part and whole, and a ground for this possibility bases upon the crux of Eastern Philosophy, I-ching(역), such as theory of Five Elements (음양오행) and Three Pillars(삼재). In Western set theory, the issues of Class(부류) and elements(요원), whole and part were independently discussed in the area of mereology, and the question of part and whole was encountered with aporia and paradox since Greek ancient philosophy. At the turn of this century, many philosophers endeavored to pursue academic inquiry to resolve this paradox, especially by Russell and Whitehead through ${\ll}$Principia Mathematica${\gg}$ at the beginning of this century. in the process, there came out a phrase 'Russell's Paradox'. Russell himself proposed a typological resolution as an answer to the inquiry. However, 'Russell's Paradox' still remains as an aporia even till present days. During medieval period, this inquiry was even considered as 'insolubia'. Throughout this paper, 1 attempt to provide an analytic aspect on 'Russell's Paradox' from an unique thinking method and perspective of Han medicine that embodies the concept of 'unity of part and whole'. To do so, 1 suggest a physiological model in the first place depicted by diagrams of Circle 원, Quadrangle 방, Triangle 각(CQT) that portray the logic of Hado or Hotu 하도 which is 'the pattern from the river Ho'. That is to suggest that CQT원방각 of Hado can De a logical foundation that explains the notions of spirit (정신,뇌), internal organs(장부), and meridian system which functions as a solution to the question of 'Russell's Paradox'. There are precedent academic works examining the issue from philosophical aspect such as Sangil Kim's ${\ulcorner}$Han medicine과 러셀역설 해의${\lrcorner}$ Han Medicine and Resolution of Russell's Paradox(2005), and this analysis will further attempt to critically examine such works from a perspective of Han medicine.
Objectives : A 55-year-old male patient whose symptoms were not improved by western drugs(including steroids) was hospitalized in Korean medical hospital for 22 days. Methods : This patient was diagnosed as Han-po-yeol(寒包熱) and treated with herbal decoctions, acupuncture, and moxibustion. And he answered the quality of life questionnaire for adult Korean asthmatics (QLQAKA) at 1st, 15th, and 22th day of hospitalization. Results : After 2 weeks herbal medical treatment, score of QLQAKA was increased by 0.53 point. Conclusion : This result suggest that Korean medical treatment has the potential for asthma patients who did not responded to western drugs.

In East-South Asia it has been known that Korean ginseng(Panax ginseng) increases blood pressure, whereas American ginseng(Panax quinquefolius) doesn't. This study was designed to find out if Korean ginseng really could increase blood pressure comparing with American ginseng. Double-blind randomized controlled trials on blood pressure and pulse rate of Korean ginseng and American ginseng in Koreans and Chineses was performed. There was no significant difference on blood pressure and pulse rate between Korean ginseng and American ginseng in both Koreans and Chineses by repeated-measures ANOVA. It was revealed that Korean ginseng does not increase blood pressure. Maybe the concept that Korean ginseng increases blood pressure is concerned with commercial interests dealing with American Ginseng.
Objective: In oriental medicine, development of new formulations has been demanded. But, there are few reports about the improvement of formulations of herbal medicine in Korea. Nowadays soft Ex has been exploited and used comparing with retort pouch. This study was designed to study on preference on TongBiEum(通痺飮)/GunYoEum(健腰飮) and to investigate which OMD(oriental medical doctor) and non-OMD prefer soft Ex or retort pouch. Methods: As pilot study we administerd TongBiEum(通痺飮) once to 30 persons who serviced Gumi Oriental Medical hospital, Daegu Haany University from April 1, 2003 to April 10, 2003. And then we administerd GunYoEum(健腰飮) once to final test group(73 persons) who serviced Daegu, Gumi, Pohang Oriental Medical hospital, Daegu Haany University from April 20, 2003 to May 10, 2003. We made up questionaires about feeling during and after taking medicine, convenience and preference ect. Results: Convenience and preference of soft Ex is significantly different between OMD and non-OMD and in age bracket, but there is no significance between men and women group. Portable state of soft Ex is very convenient, dose of soft Ex is a little amount, color of soft Ex is regular in OMD & non-OMD, men & Women and an age bracket. Conclusions: From above study it was revealed that preference of herbal medicine formulations was significantly different between OMD and non-OMD. So development of new herbal medicine formulations is needed for consumers such as non-OMD.
Effects of ginsenosides on nitric oxide (NO) production induced by lipopolysaccharide plus TNF-$\alpha$ (LNT) were examined in C6 rat glioma cells. Among several ginsenosides, ginsenoside Rd showed a complete inhibition against LNT-induced NO production. Ginsenoside Rd attenuated LNT-induced increased phosphorylation of ERK. Among several immediate early gene products, only Jun Band Fra-1 protein levels were increased by LNT, and ginsenoside Rd attenuated Jun Band Fra-1 protein levels induced by LNT. Furthermore, LNT increased AP-1 DNA binding activities, which were partially inhibited by ginsenoside Rd. Our results suggest that ginsenoside Rd exerts an inhibitory action against NO production via blocking phosphorylation of ERK, in turn, suppressing immediate early gene products such as Jun Band Fra-1 in C6 glioma cells.
The figures listed under the title of 'Photo Insert' in 『HanBangEuiYakGye』 No.2 are all those who were engaged in East Asian medicine, but they can be divided into several groups depending on the areas in which they were more focused. First, he served as a royal physician at the end of the Joseon Dynasty, or was an oriental medical doctor with outstanding medical skills during the family service. Second, he is an East Asian medicine doctor who established a school for Korean medicine education or conducted various academic activities. Third, he is an East Asian medical doctor who worked hard to lead a group of East Asian medical doctors by organizing Korean medical doctors. Looking at the reality of the oppression of ethnic medicine committed by the Japanese colonial government, they continued to seek a way to live in national medicine, which played a major role in continuing the existence of Korean medicine without destroying it. In this paper, we analyzed the 13 Korean medical doctors introduced in the "Photo Insertion" and examined the activities of modern and contemporary East Asian medical doctors.

This study examined from "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" how medical exchange between doctors of Joseon and Japan affected medical science of Japan. "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" is a record that organized the written conversation between doctors and scholars of the Joseon and Edo period when the delegation so-called Joseon Tongsinsa visited Japan in 1719. Even though "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" was written by Japanese, but it was comprised of Joseon's advanced medical ideology, especially "DongEuiBogam" that has occupied an important part of the Joseon medical ideology. As a matter of fact, "SangHanChang HwaHunJiJip" contains general theme and medical subject. But until now, it has been hardly studied by medical historians. Many studies were generally made related to Joseon Tongsinsa, a governmental delegation, focused on literary and cultural exchange between Joseon and Japan by historians. "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" is no exception to this trend. We can find that doctors of the Joseon and Edo period entered into colloquium, a form of group discussion, about the clinical theme in "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip". Concretely, the conversation between doctors of Joseon and Japan was about infant disease, infectious disease, folk remedies, medical herbs, moxa cautery, acupuncture, the study of nature, the study of medical books, etc. For example, when doctors of Japan ask a confirmed disease, doctors of Joseon explained it particularly. They had a great effect on in every cultural aspect of Japan, especially its medical field. Through this study of the medical questions and answers in "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip", I came to know that the doctors of GiHae envoys gave great influence to the medical knowledge of Japan and the GiHae inherited and developed the medical tradition of SinMyo envoys. Through the examination of this study, I could deduct that "JeongJeongDongEuiBogam" which was published by the government of the Edo period is due to not only the contents of DongEuiBogam's advanced medical thought, but also the doctors of GiHae envoy. Also, "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" gives us an idea that doctors of GiHae envoys have medical trend of the OnBoHakFa and a group of Japanese doctors has medical trend of the study of nature. I am confident that the improvement of medical science and natural history of the Edo period is due to influence of medical exchange between Joseon and Japan. "SangHanChangHwaHunJiJip" confirms that medical exchange between two countries affected doctors and scholars of the Edo period.
"HanBangEuiHakGangSupSeo" is a total medical book written by Sung Joo Bong and published in 1935, to be used in a Korean medical school in Daejon. It was published to raise generation and reconstruct Korean medicine and get the authors medical expriences across to lots of people and get it more useful. "HanBangEuiHakGangSupSeo" strengthen the study of classics of Korean medicine and it shows various efforts to reconstruct Korean medicine done those days.
Objective : This study was designed to investigate causes, symptoms and treatments for the Chronic rhinorrhea of children with oriental medical literatures. Methods : We surveyed the oriental and western medical books from to recent published books that have articles on Chronic rhinorrhea. Results and Conclusions : The Chronic rhinorrhea are classified to Bigu and Biruan(鼻淵). Bigu is similar to Allergic Rhinitis and Biyan(鼻淵) is similar to Chronic Sinusitis. The external cause of disease is the invasion of Poong han(風寒) etc a wrong air and the internal causes of disease are the deficiency of the spleen, lung and kidney and inner heat caused by stress. Treatment in Oriental medicine consists of herbal-therapy, acupuncture and moxa. The methods of treatment are expelling of Poong han(風寒) in the early stage and helping the vital energy in the late stage.
