The community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates in the Madongho Wetland protected area and inflow river located in Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, was investigated in 2022 and 2023. We collected and identified 3,582 individuals belonging to 7 classes, 23 orders, 51 families, and 78 species over the 2 years from six sites. Gnorimosphaeroma naktongense was the dominant species with a ratio of 20%, and Caridina denticulata denticulata was the subdominant species with a ratio of 13.32%. Predators and gathering collectors were the most abundant in the functional feeding group, while sprawlers were the most diverse and numerous in the habitual dwelling group. Diversity, richness, dominance, and evenness were calculated as the biological indices. In addition, various biological water quality indices were calculated. Most insects in the inflow rivers belonged to group I in evaluating relative resistance and resilience, showing high colony stability. The results of analyzing the correlation between salinity and substrate particle size with brackish water species showed that Gnorimosphaeroma naktongense and Hediste japonica had a significant positive correlation with salinity, while Assiminea lutea and Neomysis awatschensis had a significant positive correlation with substrate particle size. Additionally, Sinelobus kisui was found to be a new record of Korean Tanaididae in this study.
Domestic water pollution accidents and response management were analysed on the basis of collected data from the latest 5 years. Although average 66.7 number of accidents were happened every year, no damages of human life were reported yet. According to the data collected, the accidents were occurred at Han river, Nakdong river, Keum river, Youngsang river and other rivers, where the percentages were 25.4%, 20.3%, 12%, 8% and 29.7%, respectively. Main reasons were blamed for negligent management, mixed influences, natural phenomenon and traffic accident. Response activities were performed in the case of the oil leak, the fish death caused by water environment, the spill of chemicals. From the diagnosis of water pollution accidents, it is recommended that the legistration of all control centers for their roles and duties was made in case of the big accidents as well as the small/middle accidents.
The tap water supply in Korea mainly depends on the surface water. However, the advanced water purification process becomes a necessity due to the deterioration of surface water quality and the risk of accidental spill. High cost of water treatment and public concerns make the decision makers turn to riverbank filtration as an alternative to the surface water. Riverbank filtration has been employed for water supply in many developed countries for more than 150 years. In Korea, riverbank filtration has drawn attention since 1990s as a supply source having potential to stably meet the ever-increasing water demand. Some cities located in the Nakdong River Basin are currently supplying water through riverbank filtration. This work studies the site suitability analysis for riverbank filtration using game theory. Theory of games, which is a branch of applied mathematics used in social sciences (most notably economics), biology, engineering and computer science, was applied to candidate locations for the selection of riverbank filtration site. We proposed a policy game model as a new method adopting a probabilistic approach. The model developed turned out to be an effective tool for site selection.
A stochastic model using FOEA(First-Order Error-Analysis) and Monte Carlo Method is developed to predict water quality variation in a river. A sensitivity analysis using influential matrix is performed to determine the significant reaction coefficients. Also the BFGS (Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) optimization method is applied to estimate the optimal values of the major reaction coefficients. The developed stochastic model is applied to the real study reach and the results are agreed well with those of deterministic analysis. The process for analyzing the uncertainties of the discharge, water quality and reaction coefficients of headwater and tributaries is included in the model to estimate the influence on the water quality variation at downstream. The extents of contribution of the uncertainties influencing on the total uncertainty can be evaluated from the results of the model.

The various types of fishways are installed at the multi-functional weirs in the four major rivers to minimize the negative effect due to the construction of the transverse structures. The movable weir was installed at the upstream of the ice-harbor type artificial fishway of the Dalseong weir in the Nakdong river, which can control the fishway flowrate regardless of the river flowrate. The incoming flowrate to the artificial fishway is closely related with the hydraulic characteristics that dominate the fish passage efficiency. Thus, it is crucial to find out the weir operation rule for properly sustaining efficient fish-passage, such as the optimized flowrate. In this study, the FLOW-3D was used to analyze and compare the various hydraulic characteristics associated with the passage efficiency, based upon the given different flowrate, and subsequently provide the optimized flowrate for the fishway movable weir to maintain the best efficient flow condition for the fish-passage.

This paper deals with the historical geography of land-use and agriculture along the Lower Nam-River floodplains. The reclamation process of the river floodplains, the cultivation methods on the reclaimed lands, and the land-use patterns and processes are investigated. The Nam River, one of the major tributaries of the Nakdong River, flows through the boundary between Ham-An and Eu-Ryong Guns. Larger floodplains are located in Ham-An Gun. The floodplains of Ham-An Gun have been surveyed intensively in this study. In South Korea, the alluvial plains, mostly located along the river valleys, have been reclaimed to provide fertile agricultural lands. Those along the upper river valleys were reclaimed before those along the lower river valleys. The flood-plains of Han-An Gun were reclaimed to be the largest agricultural lands of the Gun. The natural levees along the Lower Nam-River Valley were identified before the reclamation processes but now hardly identified. Relatively larger floodplains are located along the tributary streams of the Nam River. Often there are low-lying back swamps between the natural levees and the hills/mountains that rise above the floodplains. The back swamps, called 'natural bog lands' in this region, have been reduced in size and in number through reclamation for the purpose of agricultural and industrial land-uses. Now about ten 'natural bog lands' are found in the Ham-An floodplains, and some of them are being reclaimed for the industrial land-use. This study suggests the emergent need of conservation for the remaining 'natural bog lands' in terms of ecology. Seven agricultural fields of large size, originated from the Nam-River floodplains, are identified in this study: Kun(큰들), Chung-Am(정암들), Chang-chi(장지들), Baek-San(백산들), Ha-Ki(하기들), Gu-Hae(구혜들), and Chang-Po(장포들) fields. The Kun field was reclaimed during the Japanese control and the Gu-Hae, in the 1950s. All of those except the above two fields were reclaimed after the mid-1960s. The Nam-River Dam in Chinju, completed in 1969, contributed the reclamation processes along the Lower Nam-River floodplains. The rice acreage of the region has been reduced slowly since 1970 but the rice production of the region has been relatively stable (Table 4). Rice culture had been the most important agriculture on the reclaimed lands for decades before the greenhouse vegetable cultivation became more important in the 1980s. Among the vegetables cultivated in the greenhouse, the watermelon is the dominantly leading one. Watermelons are usually harvested two or three times in a year though it is possible to harvest four times in one year. The rotation of watermelons and rice is common in the region. It is known the physical conditions of the Nam-River floodplains in Ham-An Gun is the most suitable for watermelon cultivation in South Korea.

In this study, we estimated the applicability of length-weight relationship-based biomass calculations by comparison of body length of genus Polyarthra collected from different habitats. Through the comparison, we also tested availability of representative species-specific biomass value of Polyarthra which is often used without length measurement. Polyarthra samples were collected from rivers (Han River and Nakdong River) and reservoir (Paldang Reservoir), and the body length was measured for statistical comparison among habitats and biomass calculations using different equations suggested previously. According to the results, the body length of Polyarthra spp. was significantly different among sampling sites, and the necessity of body length measurement for rotifer species in each situation has been suggested rather than using the representative biomass values which is fixed without considering time and space. Comparison of suggested biomass calculations based on our measured Polyarthra body length, the equation suggested by McCauley showed more reasonable range of biomass values than that suggested by EPA. In addition, in order to calculate more accurate biomass, it is necessary to measure the body length of rotifers, at least more than 44 individuals to reduce error probability to less than 5% with 99% probability. However, since direct measurement of rotifers biomass is limited, it is considered that further analyses are required for more precise application of rotifer biomass of which has high variability due to complex morphologies and species-specific cyclomorphosis often induced by biotic and abiotic factors in the habitats.
