The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of step-curing mode on polymerization shrinkage and contraction of composite resin restoration. Class I cavities were prepared on the extracted human premolars. The cavities were ailed with Filtek $Z-250^{TM}$ (hybrid resin, 3M ESPE, USA) and Filtek $flow^{TM}$ (flowable resin, 3M ESPE, USA) and cured with one of the following irradiation modes; Halogen 40sec with continuous curing, LED 10sec with continuous curing, and LED 13sec with step-curing. Contraction stress was measured with strain gauge which was connected to TML $Datalogger^{TM}$ (TDS-102, SOKKI, Japan) and resin-dentin interfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope. The results of present study can be summarized as follows : 1. Composite resin restoration showed transient expansion just after irradiation of curing light. Contraction stress was increased rapidly at the early phase of polymerization and reduced slowly as time elapsed (P<0.05) 2. $Filtek\;flow^{TM}$ showed lower contraction stress than Filtek $Z-250^{TM}$ regardless of curing modes. 3. LED step-curing mode showed lowest contraction stress in Filtek $Z-250^{TM}$ compared with other curing modes(P<0.05). 4. LED step-curing mode showed lowest contraction stress in $Filtek\;flow^{TM}$ compared with other curing modes(P<0.05), but difference in contraction stress was not so greate as in $Filtek\;Z-250^{TM}$. 5. Polymerization of composite resin by LED light with step-curing mode and halogen light with continuous ode resulted in better marginal sealing than LED light with continuous mode.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the light emitting diode(LED) units for composite curing. To compare its effectiveness with conventional quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) light curing unit. the microhardness of 2mm composite. Z250, which had been light cured by the LEDs (Ultralume LED2, FreeLight, Developing product Dl) or QTH (XL 3000) were compared on the upper and lower surface. One way ANOVA with Tukey and Paired t-test was used at 95% levels of confidence. In addition. the amount of linear polymerization shrinkage was compared between composites which were light cured by QTH or LEDs using a custom-made linometer in 10s and 60s of light curing, and the amount of linear polymerization shrinkage was compared by one way ANOVA with Tukey. The amount of polymerization shrinkage at 10s was XL3000 > Ultralume 2. 40. 60 > FreeLight, D1 (P<0.05) The amount of polymerization shrinkage at 60s was XL3000 > Ultralume 2, 60> Ultralume 2.40 > FreeLight, D1 (P<0.05) The microhardness on the upper and lower surface was as follows ; (equation omitted) It was concluded that the LEDs produced lower polymerization shrinkage in 10s and 60s compared with QTH unit. In addition. the microhardness of samples which had been cured with LEDs was lower on the lower surfaces than the upper surfaces whereas there was no difference in QTH cured samples.
In these days, as the patients requirements on ethetics are getting greater, so the restorative materials which match well with natural teeth colors are being developed. One of those materials is the composite resin. When we fill the composite resin into the prepared cavity, it makes some clinical problems because it shrinks during the polymerization. To resolve these problems, first we must have sufficient understandings on the polymerization of composite resin.(omitted)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the polymerization contraction of composite resin(Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$, Ivoclar Vivadent Liechtenstein) according to various liners(Tetric $flow^{(R)}$, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein/$Ionosit^{(R)}$, DMG, German/ $Vitrebond,^{TM}$ 3M-ESPE, USA). The strain gauge method was used for measurement of polymerization shrinkage strain. Specimens were divided by 8 groups according to curing units and liners. Group A, E: Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ bulk filing, Group B, F: Tetric $flow^{(R)}$ lining, Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ filling, Group C, G: $Ionosit^{(R)}$ lining, Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ filling, Group D, H: $Vitrebond^{TM}$ lining, Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ filling. Group A, B, C and D were cured using the conventional halogen light($XL3000^{TM}$ 3M ESPE, USA) for 40 seconds at $400mW/cm^2$. Group E, F G and H were cured using light emitted diode(LED) light(Elipar Freelight $2^{TM}$, 3M-ESPE, USA) for 15 seconds at 800 $mW/cm^2$. Strain gauge attached to each sample was connected to a strainmeter. Measurements were recorded at each second for the total of 750 seconds including the periods of light application. Obtained data were analyzed statistically using Repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey test. The results of this were as follows : 1. Contraction stresses in flowable resin and glass ionomer lining group were lower than that in compomer lining group(p<0.05). 2, Contraction stresses in LED curing light groups were higher than that in halogen curing light groups, but there was no significant difference (p>0.05).

The purpose of present study was to determine whether different kinds of curing lights can alter microtensile bond strength(MTBS) of class I cavity pulpal and axial wall specimens in primary molar. Thirty clean mandibular 2nd primary molar's occlusal enamel were removed and class I cavity, size of $2{\times}4{\times}2mm$ was prepared. Dentin bonding agent was applied according to manufacturer's manual. Each group was cured with Halogen Curing Unit, Plasma Curing Unit and LED Curing Unit. Composite resin was bulk filled and photo cured with same curing unit. MTBS specimens which size is $0.7{\times}0.7{\times}4mm$ were prepared with low speed saw. Specimens were coded by their curing lights and wall positions (Halogen - Axial wall group, Halogen - Pulpal wall group, Plasma - Axial wall group, Plasma - Pulpal wall group, LED - Axial wall group, LED - Pulpal walt group). MTBS were tested at 1 mm/min cross Head speed by Universal Testing Machine. Fractured surface and bonding surface was observed with SEM. T-test between axial and pulpal specimens in each curing lights, one-way ANOVA among different curing light specimens in each wall positions were done. Weibull distribution analysis was done. The results were as follows : Mean MTBS of pulpal wall specimens were significantly greater than that of axial wall specimens at each curing units(p<.05). There was no significant difference in the MTBS among three curing units at axial wall and pulpal wall. In Weibull distribution, pulpal wall specimens were more homogeneous than axial wall specimens.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of plasma arc curing (PAC) unit for composite and compomer curing. To compare its effectiveness with conventional quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) light curing unit, the polymerization shrinkage rates and amounts of three composites (Z100, Z250, Synergy Duo Shade) and one compomer, that had been light cured by PAC unit or QTH unit, was compared using a custome made linometer. The measurement of polymerization shrinkage was peformed after polymerization with either QTH unit or PAC unit. In case of curing with the PAC unit, the composite was light cured with Apollo 95E for 6s, the power density of which was recorded as 1350 mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$ by Coltolux Light Meter. For light curing with QTH unit, the composite was light cured for 30s with the XL2500, the power density of which was recorded as 800 mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$ by Coltolux Light Meter. The amount of linear polymerization shrinkage was recorded in the computer every 0.5s for 60s. Ten measurements were made for each material. The amount of linear polymerization shrinkage for each material in 10s and 60s which were cured with PAC or QTH unit were compared with t test. The amount of polymerization shrinkage in the tested materials were compared with 1way ANOVA with Duncan's multiple range test. As for the amounts of polymerization shrinkage in 60s, there was no difference between PAC unit and QTH unit in Z250 and Synergy Duo Shade. In Z100 and Dyract AP, it was lower when it was cured with PAC unit than when it was cured with QTH unit (p<0.05). As for the amounts of polymerization shrinkage in 10s, there was no difference between PAC unit and QTH unit in Z100 and Dyract AP. The amounts of polymerization shrinkage was significantly higher when it was cured with PAC unit in Z250 and Synergy Duo Shade (p<0.05). The amounts of polymerization shrinkage in the tested materials when they were cured with QTH unit were Z250 (6.6um) < Z100 (9.3um), Dyract AP (9.7um) < Synergy Duo Shade (11.2um) (p<0.05). The amount of polymerization shrinkage when the materials were cured with PAC unit were Dyract AP (5.6um) < Z100 (8.1um), Z250(7.0um) < Synergy Duo Shade (11.2um) (p<0.05).
Purpose of this research is estimating polymerization depth of different source of light. XL 3000 for halo-gen light, Apollo 95E for plasma arc light and Easy cure for LED light source were used in this study. Different shade (B1 & A3) resin composites (Esthet-X, Dentsply, U.S.A.) were used to measure depth of cure. 1, 2, and 3 mm thick samples were light cured for three seconds, six seconds or 10 seconds with Apollo 95E and they were light cured with XL-3000 and Easy cure for 10 seconds, 20 seconds, or 40 seconds. Vicker's hardness test carried out after store samples for 24 hours in distilled water. Results were as following. 1. Curing time increases from al1 source of lights, oui$.$ing depth increased(p<0.05). 2. Depth (that except 1mm group and 2mm group which lighten to halogen source of light) deepens in all groups, Vickers hardness decreased(p<0.05). 3. Vicker's hardness of A3 shade composite was lower in all depths more than B1 shade composites in group that do polymerization for 10 seconds and 20 seconds using halogen source of light(p<0.05), but group that do polymerization lot 40 seconds did not show difference(p>0.05). 4. Groups that do polymerization using Plasma arc and LED source of light did not show Vicker's hardness difference according to color at surface and 1mm depth(p>0.05), but showed difference according to color at 2mm and 3mm depth(p<0.05). The results showed that Apollo 95E need more polymerization times than manufacturer's recommendation (3 seconds), and Easy cure need polymerization time of XL-3000 at least.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the phototoxic effects of blue light exposure on periodontal pathogens in both planktonic and biofilm cultures. Methods: Strains of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, in planktonic or biofilm states, were exposed to visible light at wavelengths of 400.520 nm. A quartz-tungsten-halogen lamp at a power density of $500mW/cm^2$ was used for the light source. Each sample was exposed to 15, 30, 60, 90, or 120 seconds of each bacterial strain in the planktonic or biofilm state. Confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) was used to observe the distribution of live/dead bacterial cells in biofilms. After light exposure, the bacterial killing rates were calculated from colony forming unit (CFU) counts. Results: CLSM images that were obtained from biofilms showed a mixture of dead and live bacterial cells extending to a depth of $30-45{\mu}m$. Obvious differences in the live-to-dead bacterial cell ratio were found in P. gingivalis biofilm according to light exposure time. In the planktonic state, almost all bacteria were killed with 60 seconds of light exposure to F. nucleatum (99.1%) and with 15 seconds to P. gingivalis (100%). In the biofilm state, however, only the CFU of P. gingivalis demonstrated a decreasing tendency with increasing light exposure time, and there was a lower efficacy of phototoxicity to P. gingivalis as biofilm than in the planktonic state. Conclusions: Blue light exposure using a dental halogen curing unit is effective in reducing periodontal pathogens in the planktonic state. It is recommended that an adjunctive exogenous photosensitizer be used and that pathogens be exposed to visible light for clinical antimicrobial periodontal therapy.

This study was to evaluate the effects of several light curing units on the microleakage of composite resin restorations in primary teeth. The types of curing units were traditional low intensity halogen light(Optilux 360), plasma arc light(Filpo) low heat plasma arc light(Aurys) and high intensity LED(Freelight 2). After preparing cavities on sound primary teeth, cavities were filled with composite resin(Z100) using the same resin bond agent(Scotchbond Multi-Purpose) and were cured with each curing light system. After storing each specimen in sterile water for 24 hours, thermal circulation was done 1,000 times followed by pigmentation using 2% methylene blue solution. Each specimen was sliced and the degree of pigmentation was graded. When microleakage is graded, the average of Aurys was 0.95 which was the lowest and Freelight 2(1.05), Filpo(1.25), Optilux 360(1.30) followed. But values were not shown statistically significant difference (P>0.05). The results suggest that the newly developed curing units which has advantage in children by decreasing discomfort and procedure time can increase the microleakage of the composite resin.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to measure the power density of light curing units transmitted through resin inlays fabricated with direct composite (Filtek Z350, Filtek Supreme XT) and indirect composite (Sinfony). Materials and Methods: A3 shade of Z350, A3B and A3E shades of Supreme XT, and A3, E3, and T1 shades of Sinfony were used to fabricate the resin inlays in 1.5 mm thickness. The power density of a halogen light curing unit (Optilux 360) and an LED light curing unit (Elipar S10) through the fabricated resin inlays was measured with a hand held dental radiometer (Cure Rite). To investigate the effect of each composite layer consisting the resin inlays on light transmission, resin specimens of each shade were fabricated in 0.5 mm thickness and power density was measured through the resin specimens. Results: The power density through the resin inlays was lowest with the Z350 A3, followed by Supreme XT A3B and A3E. The power density was highest with Sinfony A3, E3, and T1 (p < 0.05). The power density through 0.5 mm thick resin specimens was lowest with dentin shades, Sinfony A3, Z350 A3, Supreme XT A3B, followed by enamel shades, Supreme XT A3E and Sinfony E3. The power density was highest with translucent shade, Sinfony T1 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Using indirect lab composites with dentin, enamel, and translucent shades rather than direct composites with one or two shades could be advantageous in transmitting curing lights through resin inlays.
