  • Haewon-sangsaeng is a key idea of Daesoon Jinrihoe, which, as Professor Bae Kyuhan points out, "… has broad applications." Haewon-sangsaeng is not only congenial to Chinese Harmonism, but it also enriches this concept. However, many scholars understand Haewon-sangsaeng in a relatively narrow scope. For them, Haewon-sangsaeng is confined to pertaining only to human relationships. For example, Don Baker, the author of Korean Spirituality, states that "Haewon means relieving the resentment human beings past and present have felt because they were treated unfairly". Sangsaeng refers to "a spirit of mutual aid and cooperation" rather than "the spirit of competition and conflict that has dominated the human community up to the present day". This article argues that Haewon-sangsaeng not only has religio-ethical implications, but ecological implications as well. Specifically, it has relevance for the goal of creating an ecological civilization that aims at the harmony of humans and nature. In other words, Haewon-sangsaeng can be both "expanded for the global peace and the harmony of all humanity" and can be expanded for healing the relationship between humans and nature, including human beings and viruses. In order not to risk being "the first Earth species knowingly to choose self-extinction", an Ecological Civilization is urgently needed before it's too late. Alone with Chinese Harmonism, Haewon-sangsaeng can make great contributions to the cause of ecological civilization by transcending anthropocentrism, individualism, and the worship of competition as root causes of the predicaments faced by modern civilization.

  • There are three purposes to this study: first, to understand comprehensively the meaning of Haewon-sangsaeng (Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficence) Thought, which can be taken as representative thought regarding peace in Korean new religions. Next, Haewon-sangsaeng Thought and the works for Haewon (resolving grievances) will be examined as principles and practical mechanisms for building the paradise of the Later World and understanding the structure of this system of thought. Lastly, logical inferences will be made regarding the future of humanity and the world through the ideological characteristics implied by Haewon-sangsaeng Thought. Haewon-sangsaeng Thought contains the complicated concepts of Haewon and Sangsaeng. Haewon is the resolution of the enmity and grievances that have accumulated in the realms of humanity and deities. Sangsaeng indicates the action of mutually benefiting one another or a state wherein people live in prosperity and peace. In Daesoon Jinrihoe, the concept of Haewon-sangsaeng is expressed explicitly and has broad applications. It can be expanded for the global peace and the harmony of all humanity. As the result of an integrated analysis of previous studies, it can be stated that Haewon-sangsaeng has values and meanings in terms of principles, laws, ethics, and ideology all of which are commonly connected to Injon (Human Nobility), Sangsaeng, peace, harmony, the Later World, and paradise. This indicates that its valuable for the future of humanity and world is deeper and wider than its mere etymological meaning. The common factor among paired ideas such as human nobility and Sangsaeng, peace and harmony, and Later World and paradise is the realization of humanity's greatest wish. This is the reason why the value and meaning of Haewon-sangsaeng can be expanded globally. The works of Haewon were a religious act of Kang Jeungsan who resolved the grievances of the Former World which was under the rule of mutual conflict and built a Later World that will operate according to mutual beneficence. Therefore, the principle of Haewon-sangsaeng has a motivative power, through the Reordering Works of the Universe, which can transform the future of humanity and the world. In this study, it can be inferred that as Haewon-sangsaeng 'fulfills human desires' and forms a 'harmonious relations of Sangsaeng' between humans and world, humans will be transformed into Injon (Human Nobility) while the world turns into a paradise, and the future turns into period of peace. Therefore, Haewon-sangsaeng Thought works as a principle that changes society, the world, and the universe. The social actualization of Haewon-sangsaeng is tantamount to bringing the future of Injon, paradise, and peace into objective reality. Previous studies on Haewon-sangsaeng Thought had been carried out under difficult circumstances by a small number of scholars. For all the above reasons, I anticipate that there will be more and more studies made on the topic of Haewon-sangsaeng Thought, which seeks the realization of Haewon (the Resolution of Grievances), Sangsaeng (Mutual Beneficence), human nobility, paradise, and peace. I hope it will emerge as a main subject in global religious thought.

  • In this paper, this author studied the realization of Daesoonjinri's Haewon Sangsaeng(解冤相生) in this world, for instance discussed the meaning of Daesoonjinri's Haewon Sangsaeng, a world construction with Haewon Sangsaeng, its practical action for the realization of Haewon Sangsaeng, and so forth. A description of the contents is as follows. Daesoonjinri's Haewon Sangsaeng eliminates the resentment of human destiny, and provides the grounds that we peoples can live with, going to help each other. And then the realization of Daesoonjinri's Haewon Sangsaeng in this world will require us to this society. Really Sangje(上帝) wanted to perform it in this world, and has performed it with a reorganizing in the order of heaven and the earth(天地公事). In response to the deeper sublimest will of Sangje, we humans can not help but do as follows: When Sangje has done a reorganizing in the order of heaven and the earth, we humans should participate in it. This is our response to the will of Sangje who wants to build an ideal society in this world. And in oder to participate in a reorganizing in the order of heaven and the earth, we humans should look up Sangje with Sincerity(誠), Reverence(敬), and should practice the words of Sangje with Faith(信). This kind of thing is a route that we should avoid Jeokwon Sanggeuk(積怨相克) and should perform Haewon Sangsaeng. This Haewon Sangsaeng can be achieved with no Chuck(無慼), an altruistic, no greed(無慾), an execution of asceticism(修道), and the practice of Podeok (布德)·Rehabilitation(敎化). No making of a Chuck, doing an altruistic, no greed, an execution of asceticism would not deceive others, would not murder others, would not blame the transgressions of others, would not discriminate, would not harm others. And Podeok·Rehabilitation should be performed well in practice. When performing Podeok and Rehabilitation, we should not nullify them as unjust words or undue actions, and we must be a true. Because we must make the words of Sangje inform a world wide well, and must convince the words of Sangje to peoples so that they can adhere to them with a faith. That's the way that we humans should participate in a reorganizing in the order of heaven and the earth in this current world, and the way that we should contribute to building the ideal society in the world.

  • Korean reunification would be one of the greatest heaven-earth works by Gucheon Sangje in terms of the lasting paradise of the Later World. The Oseonwigi-gongsa describes what it will be around the Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, Haewon Sangsaeng is the very practical means in unifying the two Koreas. What are the effectiveness of Haewon Sangsaeng, regarding Korean reunification in dealing with the social science? This researcher has found out three main impacts as follows: (1) it deals deeply with the cause of the social conflicts, and it could provide the solutions towards the Later World, (2) it highlights the great values and the potential abilities of human, and (3) it widens the research areas up to the heave-earth-human Samgye. Dealing with Haewon Sangsaeng in the social science, researchers must consider the limit of the research, which are (1) the tenacity of researcher's goal and the extremity of the research, (2) the possibility of a fallacy in doing the social science, and (3) the paradox of knowledge. In conclusion, Haewon Sangsaeng has many fundamental and practical values when it comes to Korean reunification. First, it should be a very important virtue for the unification leadership and the Korean people. Second, it could heal the serious illness, rooted in the Korean War, and many internal conflicts between the right and the left ideologically. Finally, it also recover North Korean people's severe pain and grief under the long-term dictatorship, and the heterogeneity between the South and North Korean people for 60 years.

  • In spite of the ethics of sangsaeng is based on Daesoon thoughts, we can regard it as a moral theory independent on religion. Like other reasonable moral theories, It has three levels, moral standard, moral rules and moral acts or judgements. Sangsaeng is moral standard in the ethics of sangsaeng. moral rules are derived from it and could justify many particular moral judgements and acts. The ethics of sangsaeng belongs to metaphysical ethics and holistic ethics because it is derived holistic, sangsaeng's world view of Daesoon thoughts. The ethics of sangsaeng, first of all, extends the realm of moral community to all beings of world. Therefore it might works well on as a solution for environmental problem recently issued. Secondly, because beings are fundamentally all equal in holistic world, the principle of equality is basic principle in the ethics of sangsaeng. Finally, in relation to the principle of equality, the ethics of sangsaeng needs 'Haewon' as the first moral rule because it is a practical method for solution to various social inequality - racism, sexism, regionalism and so on.

  • This paper deals with figurative meanings of Haewon-sangsaeng. It is an investigation which is both semantic and diachronic. In the first part, important implications of sangsaeng (or xiangsheng in Chinese) in the context of correlative cosmology are extensively explored. Among others, saeng (in Chinese sheng) as a powerful metaphor and its related Chinese compounds are broadly discussed. In the second part, the evolution of ideas of yuan (or won in Korean) in Chinese history is explicated. Above all, in the traditional Chinese cultural milieu, wrongful treatments which make victims feel themselves aggrieved are socio-politically orientated. The Scripture on Great Peace (Taiping Jing) is used as reference point to elucidate the essential points of yuan and its knots. However, the advent of Buddhism in East Asia adds a new dimension to the understanding of yuan (won). Accumulated yuan as karmic bond thus gives a new identity of yuan as predetermined animosity. Widely recognized idioms like "adverse relatives and karmic debtors" and indigenous Chinese Buddhist rituals like Repentance Ritual of the Emperor Liang bear witness to this transformation of the meaning of yuan in East Asia. The fruitful yet correlated meanings of yuan also make the endeavor of untying yuan deeply significant and important to human society. Haewon-sangsaeng, as a religio-ethical ideal, brings out an amicable and harmonious relationship among myriad beings in the cosmos.

The Ontological Basis of 'Sangsaeng' in 'HaewonSangsaeng': 'Geviert-Welt,' 'Gelassenheit,' and 'Wohnen' ('해원상생'에서 '상생'의 존재론적 근거 - '사방-세계'와 '초연한 내맡김', 그리고 '거주하기' -)

  • In this article, I reveal the ontological basis or grounds of 'Sangsaeng' through the Heideggerian Thought by focusing on 'HaewonSangsaeng' in Daesoon Thought and Daesoon Jinrihoe. 'Sangsaeng' means 'to live (well) with others.' 'Living' in this context means not only humans living among humans, but also all beings that exist and are able to live well with each other. At this time, we can find the basis for 'Sangsaeng' in Daesoon Thought or Daesoon Jinrihoe through Heidegger's 'Geviert-Welt,' 'Gelassenheit,' and 'Wohnen.' In other words, we can provide a basis for 'Sangsaeng' through 'Geviert-Welt' in which one of the 'four' of 'earth, sky, divine things, and those who will die' unfold in a mutually beneficent manner, and the human attitude of 'Gelassenheit' can enter 'Geviert-Welt.' Naturally, when limited to humans, this 'Sangsaeng' is achieved through 'Wohnen,' a way of being a human who enters the 'Gevirt-Welt' and lives while taking care of everything that exists. However, 'Wohnen' takes place in 'Geiert-Welt.' Therefore, in this article, I insist that the ethical ideology or guideline of Daesoon Thought or Daesoon Jinrihoe's 'Sangsaeng' is already ideologically achieved through an ontological horizon such as 'Gevier-Welt,' 'Gelassenheit,' and 'Wohnen.' And under these circumstances, it can be revealed that 'Haewon' is already being resolved.

  • Daesoonjinlihoe and Buddhism have found the cause of grudge and agony in the human mind. Fundamentally human being suffers grudge and agony which man in it self makes unless he acquire what he wants. So if human being recognizes the cause of that, the cause would disappear. And there are certainly needed regulation of 'dosu' in Daesoonjinlihoe. That implies the limitation of human effort. The worlds of heaven, earth, human being have to stand up in the same time, and there would appear paradise. In that case human being and the world of divinities are able to be relieved. Compared to that, Buddhism does not admit other Power without human effort and cultivation on oneself. Epistemological awakening of the 'solution of grudge(haewon)' and mokṣa accompany the 'saving each other(sangsaeng)' and maitrī·karuṇā. 'Haewon' and 'sangsaeng' have causal relation, further more epistemological awakening of 'haewon' and practical virtue of 'sangsaeng' would not be detached.

  • This article's purpose is to overcome the inadequacy of deliberative democracy for communication on the basis of Haewonsangsaeng. The inadequacy of deliberative democracy for communication is presented as the following two. First, as deliberative democracy treats civic virtue as instrumental thing, deliberative democracy is still in moral solipsism. Second, as deliberative democracy doesn't consider 'the inequality of power' among diverse political positions, the project of deliberative democracy for communication ends up in the exposure of the inequality of power among diverse political positions. Sangsaeng in Haewonsangsaeng concerned with inter-relationship over individualism treats civic virtue as original motility. In this context, Sangsaeng in Haewonsangsaeng is the alternative notion to overcome the first inadequacy of deliberative democracy for communication. Haewon in Haewonsangsaengas is the condition for Sangsaeng. and Haewon's method is to exclude or to eliminate the structural frame of Sanggeuk meaning mutual conflict and antagonism. This article presents two structural frame of Sanggeuk. First, First structural obstacle as internal obstacle is suggested through analyzing pluralism on the basis of existential philosophy. The result of the analysis is the 'antagonism' between the hegemonical value and the peripheral value. Second structural obstacle as external obstacle is the extinction of public sphere caused by the growth of market and the expansion of bureaucracy.

  • This study aims to define the meaning of 'Sangsaeng (mutual beneficence)' within the context of 'Sangsaeng ecological theory,' a form of discourse of that has emerged from Daesoon Jinrihoe's perspective on ecology. Sangsaeng ecological theory applies the concept of interdependence to ecology in order to explain how Sangsaeng, which is commonly used as an ethical system for humans, can be applied to the realm of ecology such that it extends its scope of application to include non-human beings. Interdependence, when applied to ecology, is formed via relationships between individuals. Such relationships can be positive, negative, or neutral, and the type of interdependence that emerges can be competitive, predatory, parasitc, and symbiotic. Even if the relationship between individuals ends negatively, it can still exert a positive effect on the ecosystem. Consequently, all of these produce a type of 'dependence'. However, relationships that end negatively can generate grievances, and from the perspective of Sangsaeng ethics, this type of interdependence is to be avoided. Therefore, by way of contrast, ecological Sangsaeng may include both relationships of positive interdependence and relationships of predation, parasitism, and competition in so far as there no grievances. Ecological theory requires a perspective that enables an understand of the relationship between nature and humans in an integrated way that does not separate them. One view of universe, known as Cheonji-saengin-yongin (Heaven and Earth give produce humans make use of them) provides insights into the relationship between the universe and humans and nature and humans from an interdependent perspective. Heaven and Earth take humans as the basis of their existence, and only after humans discover the law of nature and the sacredness behind it can a deep interdependence between Heaven and Earth and humans and nature and humans be established. However, as modern humans emerge, the interdependence between Heaven and Earth and humans collapses as they destroy nature and lower the authority of Shindo (divine order). Haewon Sangsaeng (the resolution of grievances for mutual beneficence) and Boeun Sangsaeng (the reciprocation of favors for mutual beneficence) is the solution to reestablish the interdependence that has been disconnected between Heaven and Earth and humans and nature and humans. The practice of Haewon Sangsaeng through Gongbu rituals is the way to restore interdependence between nature and humans. The process of humans achieving Dotong (mastery of the Dao) through religious practices is the practice of Boeun Sangsaeng, and humans will be reborn into Injon (Human Nobility or 'divine humans') with ecological nature and enjoy an eternal interdependent relationship with nature. In summary, Sangsaeng in the context of Sangsaeng ecological theory is the idea and practice of allowing nature and humans to restore their interdependence and live on eternally.
