Influencing Factors on the Nurse's Shiftwork Tolerance (간호사의 교대근무내성 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting shiftwork tolerance among nurses and provide basic data, ultimately, in formulating a plan for improving their shiftwork tolerance. Methods: The participants were 317 nurses who were working at three general hospitals in Daejeon and Seoul. Data analyzed t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and regression analysis using SPSS 20.0 program. Results: As for the sub-areas of shiftwork tolerance for the respondents, more than a half of nurses working at shifts suffered from insomnia, felt drowsy, complained of chronic fatigue, and were at the anxious and depressed state. Shiftwork tolerance differed by the daily intake of coffee and exercise. Shiftwork tolerance was significantly positively correlated with sleep-wake habits, hardiness, and flexibility and negatively correlated with a languidity. Regression analysis revealed that shiftwork tolerance was affected by age, sleep-wake habits, languidity, flexibility, and hardiness. Conclusion: To put the results, nurses had shiftwork tolerance affected by sleep-wake habits, languidity, and hardiness. It is therefore necessary to make a scheme for allowing nurses to improve hardiness and flexibility and decrease the languidity with the objective of improving their shiftwork tolerance.

Feeding Habits of Syngnathus schlegeli in Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Bed in Kwangyang Bay (광양만 잘피밭에 서식하는 실고기 (Syngnathus schlegeli)의 식성)

  • Feeding habits of Syngnathus schlegeli were studied by using samples collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay, Korea from January 1994 to December 1994. Syngnathus schlegeli was a carnivore which mainly consumed copepods and epiphytal gammarid amphipods. Its diets included small quantities of caprellid amphipods, tanaids and mysids. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In its initial feeding stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, gammarid amphipods were heavily selected with the incretment of the fish size. Food availability in the eelgrass bed changed seasonally. Its main food items were changed according to variations of food availability. Copepods were mainly consumed in spring, and gammarid amphipods in summer and fall.

Association Between Health Literacy and Health Promoting Behavior (Eating Habits, Physical Activity, and Stress) of University Students (대학생의 건강정보이해능력과 건강증진행동(식습관, 신체활동과 스트레스)과의 관련성)

  • Objectives: This study attempted to examine the association between health literacy and health-promoting behavior, and identify the major variables that affect the health-promoting behavior of university students. Methods: This was a descriptive correlation study that identified the degree of health literacy and health-promoting behavior of 248 university students (119 male and 129 female) and examined the correlation between the two and factors influencing them. The questionnaire covering health literacy comprised 66 questions, and that for health-promoting behavior comprised 10 questions covering eating habits, 3 questions about physical activity, and 10 questions involving stress. Results: The score for health literacy was 41.56 ± 18.38 out of 66 points, and that for health-promoting behavior was 65.27 ± 11.21 points (27.61 ± 6.72 points for eating habits, 7.23 ± 2.56 points for physical activity, and 30.44 ± 5.61 points for stress). Health literacy and health-promoting behavior had a significant positive correlation (r = 0.175, P < 0.01). The perceived health status (β = 0.391, P < 0.001) was the most important variable in health-promoting behavior, followed by health literacy (β = 0.236, P < 0.001). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop a systematic educational strategy and implement educational programs to improve health literacy as well as encourage health-promoting behavior and thus increase the perceived health levels of university students.

Feeding Habits of Blotched Eelpout, Zoarces gilli Collected in the Coastal Water off Gadeok-do, Korea (한국 남해 가덕도 주변에서 채집된 등가시치 (Zoarces gilli)의 식성)

  • Feeding habits of Zoarces gilli collected in the coastal water off Gadeok-do, Korea from March 1998 to February 1999 were studied. Z. gilli was a carnivore and consumed mainly shrimps, gammarid amphipods, fishes, bivalves and cumaceans. Its diets also included small quantities of copepods, caprellid amphipods, ostracods, crabs, squids, gastropods, ophiuroids and polychaetes. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Individuals of small size (10~15 cmSL) fed mainly on small prey organisms such as gammarid amphipods, bivalves, cumaceans and ostracods. However, larger shrimps and fishes were heavily selected with increasing fish size.

Pholis nebulosa was a carnivore which mainly consumed epiphytal amphipods. Its diets included minor quantities of caridean shrimps, isopods, copepods, tanaids and polychaetes. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In an initial feeding stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, gammarid and caprellid amphipods were heavily selected with increasing fish size. Although gammarid and caprellid amphipods were major prey organisms for all seasons, the relative proportion of these two food items changed with season.

The Effect of Clothing Habits on Cold Acclimatization (의복착용 습관이 추위적응 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The subjects wearing cool clothing (C group) or warm clothing (W stoup) in daily life from September to February of the following year were tested to examine whether cold acclimatization takes place by clothing habits. Subjects rested at 25$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, then were exposed to 15$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, 50$\pm$5% R.H. for 90 min in September, November, December, and February. Rectal temperature (Tre) of C group after 90 min cold exposure did not drop below the Tre in $25^{\circ}C$ throughout the study. W group's Tre, however, dropped below the temperature in 25t from December. Shivering stopped after December in C group while W group continued to show it for the whole study. In resting, C group showed higher heat production than W group in February, and the rate of increase in heat production during cold exposure was smaller in C group than W group in February. C group showed less cold sensation than W group in the same coldness. These results suggest that the level of cold acclimatization may be improved by the habits wearing less clothes in daily life.

Effectiveness of Nutrition Education on Dietary Habits and Diet Quality in the Weight Loss and Weight Gain Groups in College Women (영양교육에 의한 체중감소군과 체중증가군의 식습관 및 식사의 질 평가 - 여대생을 대상으로 -)

  • This study attempted to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition education especially high nutrient density diet, which promotes low carbohydrate, high protein and fiber. Sixty nine college students participated in the 8 week weight management program with nutrition education. After the program, forty six experienced a small amount of weight loss (WL group, 1.3 kg), but twenty three did not (WG group). The WL group's dietary habits and diet quality improved significantly. The INQ of nutrients and MAR significantly increased only in the WL group. The total DQI-I score significantly increased from 71.1 to 75.3 in the WL group, but it did not in the WG group. The total dietary habit scores significantly increased in both groups, but the changes in the dietary habit scores were greater than the WG group in the WL group. After the program, total cholesterol and triglyceride level decreased significantly in the WL group (p < 0.05). These results show that nutrition education which focuses on a nutrient density diet could help improve dietary habits, diet quality, total cholesterol, and the triglyceride level in college women.

Lifestyle habits, Self-growth, and Happiness of Nursing University Students (간호대학생의 생활습관, 자기성장 및 행복감)

  • This study investigates the effects of happiness on lifestyle habits, self-growth for nursing students of the university. The research participants and data collection were conducted on 116 nursing students in A city from May 20 to June 15, 2023, and the research design is a descriptive correlation study. SPSS 27.0 version was used for statistical analysis. As a result, t the lifestyle of nursing students (r=.184, p<.05) Self-growth (r=.685, p<.001) There was a significant positive correlation with happiness, and the factors affecting happiness were self-growth (β=.626) It was in a healthy state (β=-.269), and its explanatory power was 53.2%.

A Cross-Sectional Study of Dietary Habits and Eating Behavior amongst Elementary, Middle and High School Students in Wonju City (강원도 원주지역 초,중,고등학생의 식습관 및 섭식행동에 관한 단면연구)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigated the dietary habits of students in order to identify risk groups according to their Body Mass Index (BMI), and to compare the eating behavior of students in the normal range (19${\le}$24) and those in risk groups (BMI${\le}$19, 24${\le}$27, BMI>27). Method : 1176 elementary school students, 850 middle school students and 672 high school students in Wonju City, were the participants The instrument for this study was a structured questionnaire that included demographic data as well as dietary habits, and the eating behavior instrument developed by Stunkard & Messick(1985) and revised by Kim & Kim (1997). Result : 1) As students moved up ingrade level their dietary habits became more irregular and the degree that students chewed food was reduced 2) As students moved up in grade level, a greater number of the student did not eat breakfast. The reasons given were that there were not enough time before classes started(40.4%) and a lack of appetite in the morning(10.6%) in high school students. 3) As for supper, from 67.8 to 81.9% of subjects reported having regular supper. However the rest of the subjects did not eat supper because of anorexia and fear of weight gain. 4) The results identified risk groups according to their BMI showed that for elementary school students, 55.9% were in the low weight group, 5.5% in the overweight group, and 0.9% in the obese group. For middle and high school students, 40.6% and 35.5% respectively were in the low weight group, 7.4% and 6.3% in the overweight group, and 4.1% and 2.5% the obese group. 5) Comparisons of the eating behavior of students in the normal weight group with that of those in the three risk groups showed that there significant differences in 'hunger' and cognitive restraint of eating' in elementary school students, and significant differences in 'cognitive restraint of eating' in middle and high school students. Conclusion : The results of this study show that management of diet in school health should be addressed from both the aspect of lack of nutrition and that of excess nutrition. In other words, good diet is as important for students in the low weight group as it is for those in the overweight and obese groups. The establishment of good dietary habits and eating behavior in students, by nurses and dieticians should be done by providing repeated diet education and involvement in diet counseling.

The Relationship between Life-style and Physical, Mental Health Status in College Students (일부 대학생들에 있어서 생활습관과 신체 및 정신건강도와의 관련성)

  • This study reports the relationship between life-style and physical, mental health status in college students. The questionnaire survey was carried out from September to October, 1991. The questionnaire included life-style, physical health condition centered on unhealthy habits and complaints about physical symptoms, and mental condition which was assessed by Zung's self-rating depression scale(SDS). Days absent from school during the last year in males(3.6) were significantly more than those in females (1.0). Days catching the common cold were more in females than in males. The amount of complaints and the SDS score were significantly higher in females than in males. In the relationship between physical and mental health status and individual health habits, abscence-days from school significantly correlated with regular life, snacking, physical exercise, smoking, drinking. The amount of complaints and the SDS score were significantly associated with regular life, regular meal-time, eating breakfast, nutritional balance and physical exercise. In the relationship between health practice index to health status, the group having good habits showed significantly less days catching the common cold, less complaints, less SDS score and less amount of stress. It was also shown that life-style correlated with physical and mental health status.
